ARCADE FIRE – Funeral (Rough Trade)
It built a following slowly, largely by word of mouth, before the journo hype machine jumped on the bandwagon. A prime target for the hipster “I never really liked them anyway” brigade, but it still sounds terrific to me. Less said about the follow up the better, though.

BLUE NILE – High (Sanctuary)
They pop up every decade, stick out an album that still uses a palette of sound that could come from their eighties heyday and promptly burrow away back into hibernation. As a fully paid up fan, I guess we wouldn’t have it any other way. High is far from perfect, but when it does hit the spot, it does so in a way that no other band can. And I could listen to Mr Buchanan singing his grocery list quite happily. Time for a follow up Paul?

FENNESZ – Venice (Touch)
My personal favourite of Christian Fennesz’s records. The ten minute section of “Transit”, with David Sylvian, and “The Point Of It All” is about as close to perfection as any music I’ve heard.

LISA GERRARD & PATRICK CASSIDY – Immortal Memory (4AD)
It sounds like a requiem suite, with nods to Arvo Pärt and Gorecki. Slow, stately and stunningly beautiful.

MURCOF – Utopia (Leaf)
On paper, a slightly ragbag collection of remixes and three new tracks. But it hangs together as well as any of Corona’s studio albums and gets played round these parts as often.

PAN AMERICAN – Quiet City (Kranky)
Another missive from Mark Nelson of quiet wonder with David Max Crawford’s trumpet and flugelhorn adding a yearning element that reminds me of Miles’s Ascenseur Pour L’Échafaud.

PAN SONIC – Kesto (Blast First)
Nearly four hours of music that ranges from the ear-splitting to the ambient (the uncharacteristically reflective hour-long drone piece “Säteily”). It covers all bases of the duo’s sound, and some new ones too.

MAX RICHTER – The Blue Notebooks (130701)
The notebooks in question were written by Franz Kafka and the recording is peppered with extracts read by actress Tilda Swinton. Pianist Richter is accompanied by a string quartet on an album whose mood is as reflective and yet slightly disturbing as Kafka’s writings.

TOM WAITS – Real Gone (Anti)
Real Gone is unusual in ol’ Tom’s canon in that it’s largely an album recorded with a standard guitar, bass, drums rock ‘n’ roll line-up. The absence of pump organs and the like doesn’t make the music any more conventional. The surrealism is intact, but there is also a harsher side, with an uncharacteristically angry side of the laconic Waits coming through.

WILCO – A Ghost is Born (Nonesuch)
Just as good as its predecessor, with pop, country and experimental wig outs rubbing shoulders perfectly happily.

I can’t sleep. Freezing and melancholic, I can’t stop listening to Lisa Gerrard’s “The Sea Whisperer”. Her voice and music is so beautiful, sad and at the same time comforting. I know that in my current psychological condition I should not be listening to her music. But. But my previous attempts of forcing myself to enjoy more cheerful or energetic musical pieces just fell through. I heard the sounds but at the same time I was deaf to them.

If I could add a visual presentation of this particular piece and my longing of a peace of mind… it would be Arnold Bocklin’s “Villa by the Sea” or “The Island of the Dead”.

Villa by the Sea by Arnold Bocklin

These places appear in my dreams often…

Gods, I should take some rest. There’s a comfort in sleep which I had not known before. When You fall asleep, your mind switch off. There’s some consolation in that, yes..

It was primarily down to one lady, Lisa Gerrard, who’s new album more than tripled the hits of the second placed artist.

Last Sunday, I was in church (I know … shocking) and we were remembering our departed beloveds. Usually, my mum is there to carry up my grandmum’s name on the altar in rememberance, but since she couldn’t make it, I took it on myself to do the honours. I don’t know if it was the hymns or the resurge of the memory of this wonderful woman, my grandmum, but I had barely made it past the congregation before I broke into sobs on the stairs on the way to the balcony. For some reason, throughout the entire week I couldn’t shake Dead Can Dance’s Severance in my head. Such as sad song:

Severance,
The birds of leaving call to us,
yet here we stand
endowed with the fear of flight.
Overland
the winds of change consume the land,
while we remain
in the shadow of summers now past.
When all the leaves
have fallen and turned to dust,
will we remain
entrenched within our ways.
Indifference,
the plague that moves throughout this land
Omen signs
in the shapes of things to come.
Tomorrow’s child is the only child.

I love you Grandmum. Will always miss you.

Mr S and I were talking yesterday to our friend, composer Jeff Rona. Jeff is a remarkable musician

Mr S and I were talking yesterday to our friend, composer Jeff Rona. Jeff is a remarkable musician – he’s written music for everyone from Ridley Scott to Brian De Palma. One of our greatest nights ever was listening to Jeff conduct the Hollywood Bowl orchestra with Lisa Gerrard and ‘Dead Can Dance’.

Yesterday, Jeff recalled when he was a young flibbertigibbet of a composer, and thought about his music as ‘important’. He knew he was creating pieces of art, and this thought often made writing music difficult. Nothing was good enough – what would posterity think? Sometimes it wasn’t even fun. Then, one day he was in the studio trying some stuff out when he ran into a well known RnB artist. This guy was recording and having a great time, and he and Jeff got chatting. ‘The problem is,’ said RnB guy to Jeff, ‘You think of your music as fine china while I think of mine as paper plates.’

From that moment, Jeff resolved on only ever making paper plates. He sits in the studio and plays about, experiments, tries stuff out, has fun and doesn’t worry about the significance of his composition. And believe me, his music is amazing (it’s the staple of my playlist for Fred).

While Jeff is talking about composing music, I think the metaphor holds for writing fiction too. I write ‘literary fiction’ (didn’t know that until agent Stan told me…) but I don’t think of my writing as either important or significant. I like to have fun when I write. It’s not always enjoyable – some days it’s just hard and I feel that everything I do is nonsense. But, when I don’t worry and try stuff out, play with words and see what works and what doesn’t, good things happen. I can always cut the mistakes. Throw stuff away. After all, I only write on paper plates.

He grabs this months most viewed award with the review of his debut album and his interview afterwards. Lisa Gerrard also popped up the order with audio samples from forthcoming album Black Opal. Here’s the top 10 artists:

01) Christopher Tin (NE)

02) Lisa Gerrard (^)

03) Imogen Heap (v)

04) Lisa Germano (^)

05) Brendan Perry (v)

08) OverClocked ReMix (v)

09) Utada (v)

10) Vienna Teng (RE)

In the gaming front, Battl Tanks was the top read review this month and actually the second highest hit post this month too! We will be going really into game reviews from all old consoles from October and they will feature more prominantly, as the site will now be taking a much more active approach due to a change in circumstances of myself!

Title: Gladiator
Year: 2000
Director: Ridley Scott
Writers: David Franzoni, John Logan & William Nicholson
Starring: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen
Music: Lisa Gerrard, Hans Zimmer
Distinctions: Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Crowe), Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound; currently #117 on IMDb’s Top 250
Length: 155 minutes
Synopsis: a Roman general becomes a slave gladiator
How I saw it: on video a couple times, most recently (rented from Netflix) yesterday
Subjective Rating: 4/10
Objective Rating: 2/10 (gets points for concept and acting)

Much of the movie is boring. The first hour or so is slow but promising, but then out of nowhere the main character is captured by a slave trader and it’s like a completely different movie. The second movie would have made a great action movie – there’s some very fun, badass fight choreography, and the story is too absurdly simple to justify anything else – but whenever it tries to be more (which is most of the time), it gets extremely hackneyed. The plot is obvious and recycled, the dialog is painfully corny, and the characters (which could have been very strong with this story) feel like they’ve been re-written by committee.

Lisa Gerrard has updated her website with track-by-track samples of her new album “The Black Opal”. The track samples can be found here. The album appears to be based around the plight of dolphins and the albums cover art is as spooky as it is sad.

For the samples themselves, this is looking like a fantastic album! Each track appears to have a tune again and it seems much less ambience and much more heart and soul. The final track appears to be Hymn of the Fallen from the live cd’s too. Currently the album is on track for late September or early October but listen, enjoy and it looks like Lisa is very much back at the top of her (human) game again!

Z innych rzeczy – sporo muzyki dziwnej. Znowu pojawia się Miasma & The Carousel Of Headless Horses, która pochłaniała ostatnio część mojej uwagi.

Zbieranina najróżniejszych gatunków, klimatów i wykonawców, jaką udało mi się skolekcjonować w last.fm-owych statystykach w ciągu dwóch ostatnich tygodni rozbawiła mnie samego.

W 2005 roku wydano pierwszą płytę z kilkoma jazzowymi coverami, bodajże rok temu zarejestrowano materiał na drugą, niestety Wallace zmarł i wydanie materiału zostało odłożone.

Dzięki Giant Squid dotarłem do podobnej w brzmieniu formacji [zaprzyjaźnionej zresztą z kałamarnicą] o nazwie Grayceon.

Zaś zupełnie niedawno zabrzmiało u mnie trochę surowych brzmień w postaci stoner-rockowego Kyuss i prog metalowego Omega Massif, a także całkiem ciekawego, black-metalowego wynalazku – Aboriorth.

Krążek The Silver Tree, oczywiście polecam całą dyskografię, zwłaszcza efekty współpracy z Patrickiem Cassidy, Jeffem Roną, Hansem Zimmerem, jak i zupełnie osobny, założony przez Gerrard i Brendana Perry’ego, Dead Can Dance.

Slayer, zespół zaliczany do prekursorów thrash metalu. Płyty Reign In Blond, Undisputed Attitude i Christ Illusion.

TVset under repairm, ukraiński projekt muzyczny tworzący mieszankę elektroniki, downtempo i ambientu.

“Collected Remnants of Melbourne’s Inner City Rock Scene 1980-81.”

This compilation is mostly known for being the first recordings of Lisa Gerrard both solo and with the group Microfilm. Before Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard (aka Liza Gerrard on this comp) was semi-punk.

The Ears was the band that the film Dogs in Space, about the music scene in Melbourne in 1978 and starring Michael Hutchence (INXS), was loosely based on.

Trying to get an original copy of this comp on vinyl will cost you plenty. It has circulated for years online so whoever uploaded this back in the day deserves many thanks. Has a new wave, punk kind of sound; nice throwback to the early 80s.
