Quite a high drama night, well, more tense than dramatic really, urging Lyon to keep a clean sheet, they looked like they didn’t care for most of the game, the two strikers were doing okay for the most part, but there was no support inviting Liverpool pressure all game.

A Liverpool opener was inevitable, and a great strike it was, from Ryan Babel, a player I quite like, but who’s not been consistent enough in England, I hope he stays over here though, as he’s strongly rumoured to be leaving in January, he’s got such a nice technique for striking the ball. Pretty much as soon as Liverpool went one up, Torres was substituted off, which I can’t understand, not that Liverpool wouldn’t have conceded if he’d been on, it just seems a bit weird for Benitez to invite the decision to be questioned if they did concede (which obviously they did).

Approaching the ninety minutes, the ball was aimed towards the Liverpool box, they forgot how to defend and Cris and Lisandro were approaching goal, Cris, the centre half wisely left it to clinical Lisandro who calmly placed it past Reina, and everyone went mental.

Le chaudron recoit Puel et ses hommes ce samedi soir sous les caméras d’ orange…( merci la ligue), et croyez moi…au bar du stade «  de la place bellecour », ce match ressemble à une balade de santé…ou plutôt à une journée «  nature » avec au programme : cueillette de champignons, chasse au trésor dans la forêt de Montbrison.et éventuellement…un entraînement pour mercredi soir avec pour objectif de flanquer deux ou trois ballons au fond des filets de mon ami Jeannot Lapin…sur un doublé de Lisandro…

Liverpool needs both Gerrard and Torres to come out all guns blazing if they want to qualify for last 16.

Lyon is in the driving seat of the Champions League Group E followed by both Fiorentina and Liverpool, three points behind them. Lyon travels to Anfield Road to face their first back to back match against Liverpool. The French will not be holding back on Tuesday night as they are looking to extend their lead at the top of the Group E.

Liverpool will have to work hard for their points in order to qualify for the Champions League last 16. The Reds will have to win against Lyon if they want maintain that race for the two spots available for the last 16. Coach Rafa Benitez will be hoping to see both Captain Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres return back to the starting line up after their weekend 1-0 defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Benitez also omitted Javier Mascherano from the starting line up but it is most likely the Argentinean will start against Lyon, while Albert Riera could replace Babel on Tuesday night.

Lyon are the current leaders in  group E of the Champions League. It will be the French team first time to playing in Anfield Road and the setting is set for an explosive match with Lyon looking to attack with Brazilian striker Lisandro up front. They beat both Fiorentina and Debreceni in their first two matches and could be on the verge to win the group if they beat Liverpool. Lyon lost 2-0 at home to Sochaux last weekend.

Two of the top sides in Europe will meet at ANfield for the first time and this one will be a tight affair. Liverpool will need Gerrard or Torres to return to the starting line up to be in a shout of a win at home. Lyon have nothing to lose and so they will do what they do best, attack. Bordeaux- Maccabi Haifa : Une simple formalité dirait-on pour des Bordelais  en pleine confiance, en championnat comme en coupe d’Europe. Après le bon point ramené contre la Juve, les Girondins ont enchaîné avec deux victoires en championnat contre Boulogne puis Rennes. Fatigués? Ah ça non quand on voit ce que sont capables de réaliser des joueurs comme Gourcuff ou Chamakh, des triples une deux ! Vous êtes sûr qu’on joue en France?

Real Madrid – Marseille: 3ème du Championnat avec déjà 7 points de retard sur le premier, Marseille n’est pas au mieux. L’arrivée de Deschamps et la “remasterisation” de l’équipe première ne se passe pas tout à fait comme prévu. Les Chocs des champions:

Manchester-Wolfsburg : Convainquant lors de la première journée, Wolfsburg s’attaque à un adversaire, un ton au dessus. Manchester United ! Celui qui reçoit semble s’être remis du départ de son ancien ballon d’or Ronaldo. Les visiteurs, champion d’Allemagne en lice, devront parer la nouvelle armada mise en place par Ferguson, composée sur les côtés de Nani et Valencia, et en pointe de Rooney et Berbatov ( ne surtout pas oublier les très bonne dernières performances de Giggs, l’homme inépuisable ) . M’enfin… Grafite ( buteur “Wolfsburgien”) aurait selon L’EQUIPE, une faim de loup! C’est con, c’est des Diables ce soir !

Qui méritent le détour :

FC Liverpool-Fiorentina : Gilardino suspendu suite à son carton rouge face à Lyon lors de la première journée, voilà une des plus grosses inquiètudes des Reds éloignée. Après avoir écrasé le week end dernier Hull City ( 6-1 ) , ces derniers remontent peu à peu la pente au classement de la Premier League, après un début de Championnat assez inquiétant. Malgré tout, si la performance de Frey est aussi bonne que contre Lyon, Anfield risque de ne pas beaucoup éclater ce soir. Ah puis aussi, Mutu revient…

FC Porto- Athletico Madrid  : Le duel choc du championnat Portugais remporté ( contre le Sporting ) , les joueurs de Porto sont bel et bien les favoris pour ce match. En effet, devant eux, se dressera une équipe dont les mots qui résument le début de saison ne sont que Ouille Ouille Ouille et Aie Aie Aie. Mais où sont Forlan et Aguero ? VALENCIA 2-0 SEVILLA

- A boring match. However, it was ‘intense’ enough to let us see some improvements in the home side and some flaws in the away team.

- The offensive midfielder issue: both Valencia and Sevilla had the same problem during the pre-season. They ran out of men who were able to play the Xabi Alonso or Pirlo role – you know, that one who links defenders with forwards, that guy who sets the team’s balance.

Emery found Ever Banega and he carried the ‘black bat’ on his shoulders. He did what he felt like in every single moment of the game.

On the other hand, Kanoute and Luis Fabiano looked like, as we say in Spain, two ‘lonely islands’ lost right there next to Alexis and Dealbert.

- There’s something which will never change: if Silva and Villa reach their highest level, Valencia can face Real Madrid and Barcelona and they can even win the title.

- I’d love to see English referees in La Liga.

- I’d love to see David Villa in the Premier League actually.

FRANCE, ENGLAND AND ITALY

- Olympique Marseille 0-0 Girondins Bordeaux: if Laurent Blanc weren’t such a scaredy cat, Girondins would become champions again – but they won’t. If OM weren’t so unlucky and if they had someone to go with Mathieu Valbuena and accompany him in the battle, they would be favorites for Le Championnat - unfortunately, I saw Nasri on the bench in yesterday’s match against Manchester United.

So this is my prediction for the French Ligue 1: Olympique Lyonnais will finish on top again, after last year’s sabbatical. And Lisandro will be the top scorer, that’s for sure.

- Manchester United 2-1 Arsenal: Rooney dived! Let’s face it guys, he did. Please, Man U fans, just admit it this time.

- Roma 1-3 Juventus: Diego is an artist, not a footballer. You should watch his goals against the giallorossoneri. I like it when a single player can win a match on his own, much more when he plays a pair of top-notch actions which decide the outcome of an important game.

The bad thing? Yes, there’s one. If Juve keeps on getting good results by depending on Diego’s play, they will get into trouble and they will look similar to that Moggigate squad from 4 years ago. This means: 2nd in Serie A (1st if you bribe some referees, like they used to do) and getting knocked out in Champions League by March or April.

Hoje, o Fc.Porto recebe o Nacional da Madeira, no estádio do Dragão, pelas 20H15. Jogo a contar para a 2ª Jornada da Liga Sagres.

O Fc.Porto vem de um empate da mata Real, num jogo fraco e onde se notou dificuldades em construção de jogadas de perigo. No reino do Dragão, falou-se mais de Hulk, arbitragem e milhões de euros do que propriamente do empate na mata real. Pode ser uma jogada de distracção, para fazer esquecer o empate frente ao Paços de Ferreira.  No jogo de Hoje , o FcPorto não pode contar com Hulk, devido a este ter sido expulso no ultimo jogo.

A novidade dos convocados em relação ao ultimo jogo é a entrada de Christian Rodriguez e a saída de Tomás Costa.

O Nacional da Madeira tem vindo a fazer um inicio de época bastante promissor, conseguiu um empate em Alvalade, na primeira jornada da liga Sagres, e na choupana ganhou ao Zenit em jogo a contar para a Liga Europa.

Motivação não deverá faltar ao Nacional da Madeira que vai jogar no Dragão sem pressão. É preciso ter especial atenção a dois jogadores do meio campo Madeirense, Salino, que no jogo contra ao Sporting fez um jogo muito bom e outro que já é mais conhecido, Ruben Micael.

Nos últimos  cinco encontros  efectuado no dragão,  entre estas duas equipas, o Porto ganhou três vezes e perdeu duas.

Logo, posso afirmar que não deverá ser um jogo fácil  para o Fc.Porto. Mesmo tento em conta a estatística e apesar do  Fc.Porto jogar sem 5 dos habituais titulares da época transacta( Cissoko,Lucho, Lisandro, Hulk e Rodriguez), joga em casa tem tudo para vencer o Nacional.

C’est un rite de gosse qui perdure depuis 21 ans… C’est ce moment où je lance officiellement la saison en grandes pompes. L’achat du Guide France Football Ligue 1…
Indispensable pour savoir où est né Gourcuff, la taille de Erding et mener la soustraction sans calculatrice pour trouver ce qui le sépare de Hoarau et surtout Diawara, vital pour cerner la profondeur de banc et émettre des doutes cette année. Doutes que je concentre à mon niveau cette année sur Boulogne, Lens et Grenoble.

Après une lecture assidue qui m’a obligé à un arrêt de travail d’une grosse demi heure (en première lecture), j’esquisse des tendances, je scanne les équipes type, je sens le premier entraineur viré (Claude Puel en novembre/décembre parce qu’il se vautre sur le combiné C1 à la lyonnaise et départ plus que poussif en championnat), je présens le meilleur buteur (j’arrive pas trop à le visualiser lui, mais je vois un grand grand Niang cette année…) Au passage, les journaleux de France Football mettent un tacle à hauteur des genoux à Heinze qui feraient passer Francis Llacer, Eric Di Meco, Franck Jurietti et Cyril Rool pour des enfants de cœur… Gros gros doute sur sa saison, alors que je le sens énorme… Par contre, Lisandro Gomis, je les sens pas, et puis depuis quand Claude Puel, dit la frileuse du Nord joue avec deux pointes???

Bref, je suis chaud comme une baraque à churros, la Ligue 1 reprend dans 4 jours. Au passage, on va essayer de se tenir un concours de pronostic Ligue 1, C1 sur le site, en mettant en place des stats.
Je sais pas trop comment je vais m’y prendre, mais bon, j’y réfléchis… Je me disais qu’on pouvait poser son prono en comm avant le début des matchs (on jouera surement sur la formule du 1N2 et du score)

If I was a Man Utd fan I’d be a little concerned about tonight’s game at Estadio do Dragao against Porto. Following a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Old Trafford, Fergie’s side have somewhat of an uphill battle tonight in my opinion. Consider the following:

• In eleven home games against English opposition Porto have never lost.
• Of their nine Champions League games this season Man Utd have only actually won three matches Aalborg away and Celtic and Inter at home. Only one of those teams are any good.
• If Porto score, United need two goals which given they are the joint lowest scorers of teams remaining might prove difficult.
• Ronaldo has one solitary goal in Europe this year, in the last round against Inter.

I’m not completely writing United off, there are plenty of stats that work in their favour too but essentially it’s win or bust as I don’t see a high scoring draw. Porto do have the worst defence of any quarter finalist, with just two clean sheets thus far against Arsenal and Atletico. Ferdinand will be back to play alongside Vidic at the back, thus greatly improving their chances of a clean sheet. Up front Ferguson will have both Rooney and Berbatov available, important given they both have four Champions League goals this season. Tevez will be available from the bench as well as Macheda who has won two consecutive league games. I reckon much will depend on Michael Carrick’s ability to control things from midfield. I’m a bit undecided about him truth be told. He seems like the kind of player who plays well when United win convincingly but is rarely the guy who drives them to a gritty victory away from home. I’m willing to stand corrected by any Man Utd fans, it’s just the impression I’ve got from watching him.

Will it be something akin to this?

Porto will do well to take heed from Chelsea’s performance last night. Though they don’t have a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg, the advantage is with them and they won’t want to sit back and invite United forward. A goal from Lisandro or Hulk would make things very difficult for Fergie, as I’m sure he’s looking to play for a 1-0 victory. This game goes one of two ways; either United produce one their memorable European nights and are defensively solid whilst nicking the goal they need OR they are frustrated by Porto who score early and control the game whilst riling Rooney and Ronaldo into bookings and tetchy performances. If C-Ron turns it on tonight against his former rivals than I think United will sneak it. But, given how he hasn’t really performed in Europe this season (big game bottler? ahem…) I think the Portugeezer will be beaten by the Portugeezers.

 Manu-Porto/Villareal-Arsenal. It was an easy choice for me today to decide which game I wanted to watch. I mean, Manu was clearly going to destroy Porto in a painful fashion (who wants to see that?). Being a Spanish/La Liga supporter and all, it was a nobrain-er. What a game at the Madrigal! Two of the underdogs left in the Champions league, but both of them playing attractive, fast paced, short passing and fluid football.

I rushed home from school and turned on the TV just in time to see Marcos Senna launch a missile past Almunia. What a fantastic goal. Villareal dominated the entire first half. As soon as the first half ended, I checked livescore to see this:

 Manchester U. 1 – 1 FC Porto

That moment was probably the highlight of my day. I still figured that Manu were going to eat them in the second half though, so back I went to the second half at the Madrigal.

In the second half, Arsenal finally decided to play some football. They started to build pressure, and with a great ball from Cesc, Adebayor scored a scissor kick of epic proportions. It was a beautiful goal. For the next few minutes, the yellow submarine was clearly rattled. The passes they so easily stringed together in the first half, seemed a thing of the past. Fortunately they got back into the game though. And my final assessment is that Arsenal are pretty lucky to escape with a draw; Villareal are down, but not out.

You know what’s awesome though? I switched to the Manu-Porto game just in time to see Mariano Gonzalez break Old Trafford’s hearts.

 90 minutes left to play in both legs. Let’s hope the good guys will prevail.

Preamble

When this draw was made a couple of weeks ago it seemed like Man Utd were clear favourites to progress against the Portuguese champions. Indeed that is still very much the case – you get 10/1 on a Porto win tomorrow night and 9/2 on Porto getting through full stop. Now I know United are a force to be reckoned with at home in Europe but 10/1 is an absolutely ridiculous price in a Champions League quarter final and is worth £2 of anyone’s money on Betfair. I think the bookies are underestimating Porto, especially in light of Man Utd’s somewhat dubious recent form.

Whilst domestic form doesn’t necessarily always translate into European form, Fergie will be wary of being over confident. Recent defeats to Liverpool and Fulham were followed by a less than convincing win over Aston Villa at the weekend. Considering six weeks ago this side looked like they could never concede, the defence is quite shaky at the moment. This is not helped when Ferguson decides in his infinite wisdom that it’s a good idea to play Gary Neville at centre back against John Carew. The mistake was rectified in game, but not before Neville was given a torrid half hour. Rio is still out so Evans will look to form a solid base with Vidic. A clean sheet would be much appreciated, given ten have been conceded in the last five games. Further forward you’re likely to see the usual suspects in midfield and attack with Tevez likely to partner Rooney up front while in midfield you could maybe expect Carrick, Scholes, Ronaldo and Park. 

Jose’s shadow

The last time Porto got this far, they went and won the whole tournament and the world was introduced to the Special One AKA Jose Mourinho. Indeed it was at this same stage in 2004 that they faced Man Utd and proceeded to knock them out with 1-1 draw at Old Trafford after winning the first leg. Cue Jose’s jig down the Old Trafford touchline.

Anyway, that’s all history now but Porto haven’t managed to reach the same heights since, despite winning the league three years running. They currently have a solid, counter-attacking team that has a pair of very effective strikers in Lisandro and Hulk. Both have the ability to cause the United defence some problems – Lisandro has six European goals already this campaign while Hulk is like a good version of Julio Baptista (not saying much I know). In midfield Rodriguez will pull the strings centrally and will be supported by Meireles and Gonzalez.

Prediction

It will be interesting to see which Porto turn up, the one brushed aside 4-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates in the group stages or the one that classily won the return leg 2-0 (though against an understrength Gunners). In the last round Atletico were knocked out on away goals in a tight affair, but I remember from the highlights that Porto missed enough chances to have put the tie long beyond doubt. Man Utd will be hoping that following his double against Villa, Ronaldo has come into some form. He always makes sure he noticed in big games, but not always for the quality of his play. They will target the Porto keeper Helton who isn’t the most convincing and hope too that Rooney has one of his nights where everything comes off. I do think the price on Porto is too big but at the same United are justifiably favourites and will hope to take a clean sheet into the second leg, ideally topped off with two goals of their own.

This could be the second most exciting tie of the day.  Atletico will have to go for it as Porto has two away goals.  However, they don’t have to go for it till the second half.  Try telling that to such an attacking squad.  I love Aguero, Forlan, Simao and Maxi as a quad going forward.  They are as good as any of the top attacking foursomes in the world.  That said, Porto is tough and, in Lisandro and Lucho, have the ability to score with anyone.  The Dragao is a tough stadium to play in.

Keys:  If Aguero and Forlan play like they did against Real Madrid, they will get goals.  It’s all about the keeper – if Leo is on, they have a good chance of going through.

Surprise match winner:  Maxi.

Prediction: Atletico 2 Porto 1.  Atletico in an upset.

Muito equilíbrio. Já era esperado. Nas quatro partidas desta terça-feira pela Liga dos Campeões foram três empates, só o Arsenal venceu e tem vantagem no jogo da volta.

O jogo mais esperado era o duelo entre Inter de Milão e Manchester United, que aconteceu em Milão. O placar final foi 0×0, mas apesar do resultado pífio, o jogo foi bom e disputado. As duas equipes criaram chances de gol. No primeiro tempo, o domínio foi do Manchester e no segundo tempo quem dominou foi a Inter. O Atlético de Madri é obrigado a vencer ou empatar por três ou mais gols.

O único vencedor do dia foi o Arsenal que, jogando em casa, bateu a Roma por 1×0, gol de Van Persie que sofreu e converteu pênalti aos 37 minutos do primeiro tempo. No jogo de volta em Roma, o Arsenal pode empatar ou até perder, caso marque um gol, por um gol de diferença que conquista a vaga para as quartas. A prorrogação só acontece se a Roma ganhar por 1×0. Para se classificar, os italianos terão que vencer por dois gols de diferença.

Terão existido dois jogos?

Confesso que a leitura diária dos jornais me reconforta. É interessante perceber que a inveja continua a comprometer a seriedade e a cegueira a subverter os princípios da profissão. Será sempre assim no caso do FC Porto. É um excelente reflexo da nossa competência e não costuma justificar mais que um encolher de ombros. Esta segunda-feira, todavia, detive-me na primeira página da O Jogo. Fogo nela!

«Erro confirma líder». A manchete é suportada pela unanimidade do Tribunal de Árbitros, mas esquece que, aos 18 minutos, Reyes rasteirou Lucho González, como confirmam as opiniões dos três ex-juízes. Apesar de concordar com a decisão de Pedro Proença, António Rola diz que Lucho sofreu de facto um toque, mas deixa no ar a lógica da lei da vantagem. Não há lei da vantagem numa grande penalidade, caro Rola!

O Jogo fechou os olhos a duas evidências: uma grande penalidade e uma entrada violenta de Sidnei sobre Lucho González, que se enquadrava num cartão vermelho. Tudo isto ainda na primeira parte, com um empate sem golos. Não acham que mudaria por completo o clássico? Será sempre assim, já o disse. O fogo do Labaredas, porém, não pode ser reprimido. É que no preciso momento em que lia os jornais, passei os olhos pelo resumo da RTP. A mesma lógica, desta vez com uma agravante: nem uma referência ou imagem do penálti sobre Lucho González. Perfeito para agradar a quem manda! O F.C. Porto, de facto, serve-lhes para tudo.
