The Weather – Due to its location, the weather in Greece is what most holiday-makers would consider ideal: the summers are warm but not terribly hot and the winters are very mild. The ocean acts as a great insulator and provides very pleasant breezes and the lack of great altitude ensures very little rain. The sun shines most of the time and the temperatures average out at around 25º-30ºC. You are unlikely to find bad weather there, but if you want to check to be sure you can go to sites such as Holiday Weather for more information – you will almost certainly be happy with what you find.

Antiquity – Greece has one of the oldest and most fascinating histories of any country on the planet. While there you should definitely check out some of the impressive world heritage sites. Getting There

The latter is almost always the cheapest option unless you are electing for a completely bare-bones package. Building your own package involves using cheap flight sites like Easyjet.com and then booking your accommodation separately. This does offer a lot of customizability and freedom although it often can turn into a major headache, which you really don’t want on your few days of freedom. The best idea is usually to elect for a package holiday, such as those offered by directline holidays, which will take care of everything for you. The best thing about these kinds of packages is just how easy they are – they are tried, true, and well supported. There will be people you can speak to in English and plenty of activities easily booked. Almost more importantly, the fact that these package holidays are well established usually makes them a lot cheaper than the alternative.

Other – The currency in Greece now is the Euro, which makes your life a lot easier. The Euro hovers at around £0.70 which is nice for you because it makes things a little cheaper. This is not the exact rate, but it should be pretty close. You can also quite easily take your credit/debit card instead of changing all that cash – there are plenty of ATMs and most merchants accept cards. You only really need cash for the myriad small trinket and food stores you will certainly find scattered around. Restraunts and food in Greece are generally much cheaper than they are back home – particularly if you go a little off the beaten track to find that authentic flavour. There are plenty of review sites available to you online – you just have to go looking. You really don’t need any shots or any major preparation to visit Greece – it is a very modern country – just make sure you get your travel insurance and you will be fine.

Oh my word.  When exactly did this happen?

My son, my tiny, tiny baby boy, is growing up.  Yesterday he chased after Eric, demanding a “big hug!”.  He can put the balls in the ball-run at the soft play centre like nobody’s business.  He plays with other children, and is so gentle and patient with those younger or smaller than him.  He’s taken a few steps, and when he’s got his walker he can run.  Last week we had to buy walking shoes, as his feet were squeezed by his cruisers.  We’re also going to have to buy some more 12-18 month clothes at some point: they seemed impossibly big when he was born.  Now, his newborn clothes reach his knees and his elbows, and he’s into the toddler ranges in most shops.  He’s the most loving, affectionate little boy I’ve ever met.  I love him so deeply it hurts.

This journey, it hasn’t been easy.  My pregnancy was wanted, but so unexpected.  We were fraught with worry all the way through; Joe and I had to learn to be a couple before this ticking time bomb exploded into our lives and made us a family.  There was confusion over my due date, with two and a half weeks between my dates and my midwife’s.  At twelve weeks, when I suffered bleeding, I was convinced we were going to lose him; that feeling stayed with me throughout the pregnancy.  He was born eight days before the midwife’s date, and a month before mine, perfect in every way.

Bonding with David took me a long time; longer, perhaps, than it took Joe.  There was this expectation that I’d be ecstatic to have my new baby, that I’d love every element of motherhood.  Who in their right mind loves cracked and bleeding nipples, sleepless nights, shitty nappies, and not being able to sit down on less than six layers of padding?  I was severely anaemic, and had to take iron tablets.  I was ill, and tired, and I hated breastfeeding with a passion, but I forced myself to continue until David was a month old, the time that I could express milk and introduce bottles.  I was adamant that I would NOT use formula, that I’d be a terrible mother if I did.  I remember sitting up and trying to feed David, and passing out while I was feeding him.  I remember sitting in a clients’ offices when David was ten days old, trying to feed him and failing, and feeling so miserable.

When he was about eight weeks old, I started the Pill.  It made me bleed heavily, and I became very anaemic again.  I couldn’t express nearly as much milk as before, and David would either go hungry, or start having formula.  He started on formula, and I knew that I was supposed to feel like a terrible mother.  In reality, I was relieved.

I’d had some mental health support from a community mental health nurse since David was four weeks old, and when he was about three months I was able to see a psychiatrist.  That psychiatrist prescribed a low dose of Sertraline, an antidepressant that is safe to take whilst breastfeeding.  I wish I could say that it provided an instant fix, because it didn’t.  I stopped feeling suicidal, yes.  In fact, I stopped feeling much at all.  My visits to see him consisted of “Yes, I’ve got side effects, no, I’m not suicidal, yes, therefore things must be much better, see you in six weeks.”  In June, when David was six months old, I could take the side effects no longer, and stopped taking the Sertraline.  I felt better almost as soon as I stopped taking it, well, as soon as the week of withdrawal symptoms had passed.  At the end of August I managed to get myself discharged from community mental health support, too, and I felt free.

We’ve muddled along for the last few months, and things have slowly been improving.  I’m not sure at which point it was that I finally felt better, more at home with myself.  Maybe I’ve just settled into motherhood now, and maybe it’s just because David is just easier to look after, more enjoyable.

Because David is easy, these days.  He’s a toddler, he understands what I’m saying and responds to it.  He stops playing to give me a hug, then goes off and does his own independent little thing.  He’s mimicking what we say all the time (including “crap!” in the car the other day.)  Even his tantrums, although trying, are an interesting side of his personality that has only just started to show.  When I was in the darkness, I never thought I’d feel the kind of joy that I feel watching him grow and change and learn.  Now that I am here, I appreciate him even more.

If you are reading this, and you feel like I did, talk to somebody.  Tell them how you feel, and get some help and support.  It is not your fault, you are not a bad parent, and you will get better.  It’s worth all the hardship just to come through it and feel alive.

Lady Gaga had a CD signing last night at a Best Buy in Los Angeles, California. The pop star was scheduled to sign only 400 copies of her sophomore album “The Fame Monster,” but upon arriving at Best Buy she announced that she would sign everyone’s copy of her album. Gaga signed over 5,000 copies of her album and left about 2 hours after she was schedules to leave. Gaga says she loves her “little monsters” (fans) so much that she even purchased $1,000 worth of pizza at a local Papa John’s.

Sudah mencoba 3 paragraf pertama. Nah ternyata banyak ide yang muncul setelah 3 paragraf itu kan. Sekarang kita akan mulai pengembangan. Seringkali kita merasa kurang puas dengan 3 paragraf yang telah kita tuliskan. Ada beberapa informasi yang terlewatkan. Ide pengembangan ini dapat kita sisipkan diantara 3 paragraf itu, atau kita membuat sub bab baru, dibawah 3 paragraf yang telah kita tuliskan. Karena pada dasarnya tiga paragraf itu hanyalah pemancing dari ide yang ingin kita keluarkan.

Dan tanpa sadari kita akan membentuk sebuah kebiasaan menulis pendahuluan pada paragraf pertama, penjelasan pada paragraf kedua dan terakhir kesimpulan pada paragraf ketiga. Tiga paragraf ini cukup sederhana tetapi cukup mewakili. Untuk pengembangan kita bisa menggunakan rumus 4 W 1 H, atau rumusan-rumusan yang lainnya. Yang terpenting kita merasa nyaman dengan teknik yang kita gunakan. Ingat jangan terlalu terpaku pada teknik ya….

Setelah pengembangan selesai, kita tinggal melakukan langkah terakhir yaitu editing. Pada saat pengediatan kita bisa melakukan perbaikan sana-sini, penambahan dan pergeseran. Ada beberapa orang yang menikmati editing langsung. Yaitu setelah menulis langsung diedit. Teapi ada juga yang menyukai pengeditan setelah pengendapan. Biarkan dulu semalam biar terfermentasi. He…he…., esoknya saat kita melakukan pengeditan akan muncul ide-ide segar yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas tulisan kita. Selamat mencoba.

Ada banyak teknik yang bisa kita lakukan untuk mengawali menulis. Salah satunya adalah teknik freestyle. Dalam teknik ini, kita dibebaskan untuk menulis apapun yang ada di fikiran kita. Yang penting nulis, yang penting nyatet. Teknik ini memang cocok untuk warming up atau pemanasan. Tetapi pada saat dihadapkan pada sesuatu yang serius atau pada suatu target penulisan tertentu, teknik ini justru membuat pikiran saya macet.

Sebagai penulis pemula akhirnya saya mencoba-coba trik yang paling sesuai untuk menulis. Dan dari hasil percobaan saya teknik yang paling nyaman yang biasa saya gunakan dalam mengawali menulis adalah teknik 3 paragraf. Dengan teknik 3 paragraf ini akan memaksa saya untuk menghasilkan tulisan yang lebih fokus dan tidak bertele-tele. Teknik 3 pargraf juga membantu saya untuk dapat membuat penjelasan yang lebih detail apabila ide pemikiran saya itu ternyata terlalu pendek.

Teknik 3 paragraf juga membuat saya “terpaksa” mengakhiri tulisan saya. Karena ada sebuah kebiasaan buruk yang saya miliki dalam menulis adalah suka menjelaskan minim kesimpulan yang akhirnya justru membuat tulisan saya mandeg di tengah jalan. Karena terlalu banyak ide yang ingin dituangkan justru akhirnya kecapekan dan berhenti di tengah jalan. Dengan memaksa diri untuk menulis hanya 3 paragraf maka saya akan segera dapat menutup tulisan saya. Nah tulisan ini juga akan saya akhiri pada paragraf ketiga untuk ide yang sudah terlanjur muncul di otak saya akan saya lanjutkan pada 3 paragraf selanjutnya.
