Hai had been through it all, it seemed. She lost both her parents and her grandmother. She had to juggle school and work. She had to take care of all the bills. And all this long before she became an adult. So when the time did come for her to enter adulthood, Hai knew she was well prepared. She had a feeling, as well, that things would begin to go more smoothly for her. It just had to, right? Karma and all…

Hai never ever thought of going out with anyone who wasn’t Stephan. But after being invited out by an old friend, she decided it couldn’t hurt. It was just a little get-together at the park, after all. He was a perfect gentleman, taking her bounderies into consideration. They talked about everything from art to literature to the rising gas prices. It was a nice way to spend the day. It sure beat cleaning the house.

But the good times never seemed to last for Hai. She had lost track of time and before long, rent was due. Unfortunately, she had the day off most of the week and hadn’t made enough money. She tried to reason with the landlord but he refused to listen. The man only cared about his money, regardless of what he’d like the public to know. Hai knew better.

But there were some people who understood, thankfully. Greta Flynn was a very kind, sweet woman and Hai was greatful for her companionship. It was like having a mother again.

Kate Langenburg/A&E Groove

Upon stumbling around the internet the other day, I came across a news story on a Chinese painter with some absolutely wonderful and fun art. His name is Liu Bolin, he is thirty five years old, and every picture he paints is a self portrait. How’s it done? He simply paints himself invisible….into each photograph, of course.

Completion of one painting may take up to ten hours. Many of his pieces are not done on canvas, but instead he paints on himself. He then strategically places himself around certain parts of his city and has a photographer shoot photos of him. People that pass by his artwork usually don’t even realize he is in the scenery until he moves an arm or a leg.

According to Oddity Central, Bolin’s art is a form of protest to the Chinese government, which has caused him to feel a loss of personal identiy and also shut down his art studio back in 2005. One of his main goals, it seems, is to be strange — he doesn’t want to fit into modern society. Who can blame him? (PS. By clicking on the oddity central link, you can view a few more of his paintings.)

Now that Hai was able to finally pay the rent, the landlord seemed much nicer. For a moment, she thought he would have a heart and comfort her in her time of need. But it seemed very few people gave her a break. He was no different. He only seemed to care when she had the money to pay him. Figured. Money was more important than people’s lives.

There was little comfort in her life now. The few moments of peace she had were used to escape. Hai loved painting. It always made her feel relaxed. Nothing could go wrong in painting. It simply morphed to fit whatever situation was present. She wish it was that easy for her. Adjusting to her situation was difficult. But she had to do it, if she hoped to keep her mind.

It was times like this when friends mattered most. Hai had very little time to spend hanging out with friends, so many bonds fell apart. But there were a few who held on, understanding her problems and helping her through them. For those friends, she was thankful. She couldn’t imagine doing everything completely alone.

Finally ready to let go of the past, Hai finally decided to have her grandmother buried. She knew it was time. She had to think about the future now. Somehow, though, she knew her grandmother felt it too. She carried the urn to the cemetery and gently put them in the ground. She felt a sense of relief as the urn left her hands. The house was now hers. Her life was now hers. It was all hers to mold now.

I’m not a DC fan. I’ve always been a Marvel fan most of my life. It must be because of the hard-to-follow characters that the DC universe is providing that you’ll always end up in dizzy proportions every time they show they’re multi-dimensional list of characters. But with the latest DC outings with the likes of Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: New Frontier, Batman: Gotham Knight, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern: First Flight you might just want to stop and take a look at some new stories from the same old characters.

An adaptation from the comic-book of the same name, the plot gives us Lex Luthor being the president of America and the country is back in its peaceful and boring life. Superman and Batman were considered the country’s enemy with some smart idea, by the president himself.

Then the story goes to a more interesting detail, most of the heroes work for the government and Superman was given a bounty of one billion dollars. Ergo, every hero is their “enemy”.

I always have a problem with comic film adaptations once when the storyline gets too wordy, I usually forget the film but this one is quite different. The storyline is easy to follow, the art is good, and you get to know a few heroes from the DC universe, if you’re not a DC or a comic fan.

So, if you are a comic book fan, whether it is Marvel, DC or other publishing houses, you have to watch this film. It is worth the 67 minutes of your time.

Once again, Stephen Heller — who writes the Visuals column for the New York Times Book Review and The Daily Heller blog for Print Magazine, — gives us shock-and-awe images. This time, he acquaints us with Liu Bolin, a 36-year-old performance artist from Beijing, whose art form is what Heller calls “camo art.” Check this out:

Can you find Liu Bolin??

Liu, known as the “Invisible Man,” steps into his images… literally. He has been known to spend upwards of 10 hours painting his body to nearly perfectly blend into his surroundings, turning an eventual photograph of him into a living, breathing trompe l’oeil image. In the photograph below, he is barely visible blending into an enormous American flag.

Performance artist Liu hiding in plain sight.

The YU Gallery in Paris has a month-long, one-man exhibition of Liu’s photographs which will close on October 31st. Nine large images from the YU Gallery exhibition can be viewed here on the website of the Herald Sun, a Melbourne, Australia newspaper.

When asked why he does this, Liu explains that blending into his surroundings communicates social invisibility. “I experienced the dark side of society, without social relations, and had a feeling that no one cared about me, I felt myself unnecessary in this world, ” Liu told the London Telegraph. Liu considers his work a form of protest against the Chinese government, which he said, closed his art studio in 2005. This photo, one of his most political, is amazing (see right):

I got a forwarded email today with a bunch of pictures, these pictures featured a man who created the illusion of camouflage by painting himself to match his environment. This man is Liu Bolin, a 37-year-old from Shandong, China. Apparently his art is a protest against the actions of the Chinese government, who shut down his art studio in 2005 and also prosecute artists in China. He says his art represents the diminishing humanity in todays society. They also say that his work is so detailed that he remains unnoticed by passers-by. After observing some of this work I was quickly captivated, being an artist myself, I tend to appreciate complicated pieces, pieces that take a great attention to detail to execute. If you are interested in seeing more of his work visit artnet.com

Now that she was the only one to pay the bills and rent, Hai worked harder than before. She sold her grandmother’s furniture in an effort to gain some extra money and began working longer hours. She managed to collect enough money to pay the bills but the rent would be a bit more difficult. She could only hope the landlord was lenient. He understood the situation, right?

School and work left little leisure time for Hai but when she was home, she enjoyed playing the violin. Shortly before her death, her grandmother had bought her a violin to practice with. She wasn’t able to practice much, so her music left much to be desired. However, it was a good way to unwind after a long day.

Her young body was able to go long periods without much rest but it was still a human body. It still needed sleep. Before long, Hai found herself falling asleep standing up or sitting while eating. It was embarrassing, yes but a true testament to how hard she was working.

But no one seemed to care much. Her landlord had little sympathy for her when the rent was late. “But, sir…my grandmother just passed and I..”
“You’re on the lease too, Hai. You still have to pay.” He gave her a few more days to make the money and Hai sadly sold some of her favorite belongings to make enough money.

She was trying so hard! Didn’t anyone care!?

Hai had considered getting a job at the same aquarium as her grandmother. She always loved taking care of animals and fish were among her favorites. Lien was more han happy to offer some advice on how to get hired. “Just be yourself…and seem really into the rights of fish kind.” Hai knew she wouldn’t have any problems. She was a likable person, after all.

She supposed she inherited it from her grandmother. Lien was a very charismatic woman and made friends easily. Of course, she didn’t have many friends due to her picky nature. But the landlord was her kind of person and often, he would stop by to talk to her while tending to the needs of the other tenants.

Hai was doing excellent in school, much to her grandmother’s happiness. She recieved top marks on all her papers. At this rate, she would soon be eligable for private school. Hai didn’t really care much about going to private school, though. She liked the school she went to now.

That was mostly because Stefan was there. Stefan was her closest friend and she would be lying if she denied having feelings for him. He was just everything she wanted. He was kind, smart and very handsome. He had a very creative way about him and also took great care of his body. He always mananged to make her smile too.

Before retiring to bed, Lien decided to light a fire in the fireplace. The warmth often helped her fall asleep quickly. Little did she know that this time would be her last. During the night, a spark jumped out and spread onto the rug below. Before long, the entire bedroom was on fire. Lien had no way of escaping.

Though the firefighters came quickly to put the fire out, there was no saving Lien. Hai was inconsolable. First her father, then her mother and now her grandmother. She truly was all alone.

Stefan was very supportive after finding out Lien had passed. He visited more often, helping Hai out with all the chores she was now forced to do. He tried to keep a smile on her face, despite the terrible situation she was in. Hai really appreciated it.

It was difficult to adjust. The house was so empty now. Hai had to have her meals alone, go to sleep alone and come home to nothing. At times, she wished to join her family in heaven.

But she knew she couldn’t. She had to continue on. It was what her grandmother would have wanted. She didn’t want to disappoint her.

How do the tools, that you use for writing, influence what you write? Alan Liu researches this relat

How do the tools, that you use for writing, influence what you write? Alan Liu researches this relation between technology and writing. He argues that our reading and writing is part of “discourse network 2000”. We structure our knowledge more and more in XML (extended markup language) and databases and this, according to him, influences not only how we write, but also what we write.

The term “discourse network 2000” refers to Friedrich Kittler’s Aufschreibesystem 1800 en 1900. Kittler defines discourse network as follows: “(T)he network of technologies and institutions that allow a given culture to select, store, and process relevant data. Technologies like that of book printing and the institutions coupled to it, such as literature and the university, thus constituted a historically very powerful formation” He pointed out that in the current discourse network one should also take into account data storage, transmission, and calculation in technological media.” [2]

Liu explains how in our current society software-protocols of our publication software shape our communication. On a practical level this means that what we write is shaped by the requirements of XML and the databases in which they are stored. Liu argues that due to these databases and XML we now see a strict distinction between the structure of content and its presentation. What the document looks like and what it is are two different things. The information exists without its (material) visual presentation. Liu argues that due to this distinction between content and presentation “discourse network 2000″ can be understood as a belief. It reverses what literature scientists believe in. They see texts as material artifacts. The presentation of the text to them is sacramental. For “discourse network 2000 believers” the presentation is purely interfacial. They see text from an abstract point of view.

What does this mean for the act of writing and authoring?
Liu explains that:

“From the author’s viewpoint, therefore, a poem can now be written free of commitment to, or even knowledge of, the formal or material conventions for receiving the poem. Just as striking is the inverse of the double-blind relationship: an author can now create the formal or material conventions for receiving a poem free of any specific knowledge about what actual source content will be delivered into that frame.”

This distinction between content and presentation becomes apparent with the use of RSS feeds. You implement text from different places in one personal website. The texts are disconnected from a particular visual presentation. The author only selects and combines several sources. “He surrenders the act of writing to that of parameterization”.

If you look at blogs from this perspective you can question how the conventions of the blog software influence what we create. On one level there is the theme or style of your blog. This determines how your text will appear. You can make these decisions separate from the text that will be implemented. On another level the software of blogs asks you to enter a title, add tags, categories, etc. It forces you to handle/create your text in a particular way. It can give you the opportunity to implement an image. It can force you to outline the images to the right etc.

For example, if you look at the Masters of Media blog. The excerpt in the main page may contain not more than sixty characters. There are two ways how this excerpt is created. You have the possibility of writing a separate excerpt of 60 words that can be entered in a special box. Or, iIf you don’t use this possibility the first sixty words of your blog post will be automatically shown as the excerpt on the main page. The blog software forces you to write, or an excerpt of approximately sixty words, or to keep in mind that your first sixty words will be used as an excerpt. In my case, I try to write my first paragraph as a short introduction to the rest of the post. So here, the software protocols discipline me in how I structure my text and maybe even in what I write.

Liu takes this way of thinking a step further.
In line of Kittler he compares the databases that contain content, “the source” with the concept of “Nature” in 1800. In this romantic era, according to Kittler, the source of meaning was found in Nature. Language was seen as “a mere channel of translatability of the transcendental essence of Nature”. In the modernist era circa 1900, by contrast, mother nature was a faint echo. The true source of the signal, Kittler argues, was an apparently random, senseless, automatic, untranslatable noise inherent in the channel of transmission itself.

Liu points out that the distinctive signal of 2000 synthesizes 1800 and 1900. He explains that in 2000, the channel is just as seemingly senseless, random, and automatic as in 1900. “(Take a cross-section of a document transmission over the internet at ay moment, for example, and witness a dispersion of atomistic file packets and molar document elements)”. But unlike in 1900 the source is not equal to this senseless channel. In 2000 the source can be found in “a precursor act of sense making in the databases and XML repositories outside the direct control of the author”. So like in 1800 the author becomes a messenger of meaning or content that already exists, he is no longer the source of the content but he has a mediating position.

“in a curious reversion to 1800 – that content held in databases and XML now sets the very standard for an ultra-structured and ultra described rationality purer than any limiting instantiation of the Ding an Sich.”

So the databases contain structured information, knowledge, and meaning. The author has no direct influence on this. He can only guide what is already there. (This you can recognize with RSS feeds) The main question here is: are you still an author under these circumstances, can you still be creative?

Liu concludes his article with the question: “In our current age of knowledge work and total information, what experience of the structurally unknowable can still be conveyed in structured media of knowledge?” He proposes that we can only create share, and write things that can be structured. The technology does not only influence how we write, but also what we write or what we can write. I agree with Liu that the technology disciplines our writings and communications in a technical manner, as I illustrated with the excerpt example of the Masters of Media blog, but I don’t think that it disciplines in what we write or what we say.

Note–earlier, the headline incorrectly says “Gang-Related” stabbing. I have since discovered that is not the case. See more here.

One man was stabbed to death and two others injured during a gang fight in Sunset Park, according to Tuesday’s New York Post Police Blotter. On Sunday night at 61 Street and 7th Ave an unidentified victim was “slashed in the arm.” He was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Two others, also stabbed, were listed as stable.

The Post reported that Nelson Liu, 19, was picked up for murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Police have arrested a second person in connection with the crime, according to the blog Best View in Brooklyn.

Sunday’s fight marks the fifth murder in Sunset Park nearly as many weeks. Police arrested a 16-year-old for the shooting of two young men in connection with a double murder in the park itself on August 31st. A September 20th shooting on 40th and 4th Ave also left two dead. At last update, police had not arrested anyone in connection with the incident.

Though police did not think either of the previous killings were “gang-motivated,” they recognize that gangs, always present in the area, have begun to surface. And have brought violence. Commanding Officer Jesus Raul Pintos believes that at a minimum, the August murders had some root in local gang problems.

Until now (information on the most recent murder still pending) both the victims and alleged perpetrators of these crimes have been young man–generally between the ages of 16 and 21. The 72nd Precinct, in an attempt to address the recent surge in violence, will hold a gang-awareness forum geared towards neighborhood parents. The event will bring together police officials, clergy, and former gang members to educate parents about their children and gangs. Both Commanding Officer Pintos and Youth Officers will address attendees.

The forum will be held Thursday, October 15th at 6:30 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 545 60th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues).
