As stated in the former blog post about an interactive TV show: online TV is the future. So why not be apart of the future and create your own online TV channel?

With livestream.com you can broadcast yourself live, chat with other users or find people who stream about things you’re interested in. You can find live broadcasts from all sorts of categories like Art & Creativity, Science &Tech and Medicine & Health. When I checked the website (at 1 pm GMT+1) there were 183 live broadcastings, which is quite a few, but I have a feeling that the number might increase later on when the Americans wake up

 Imagine using live streaming as a part of an online campaign. You can create an audience and promote your broadcastings by posting tweets on Twitter when you’re live or you can rely on the livestream network that consists of more than 100,000 viewers.

What is “The Perfect Storm” ?    Well apart from being that phenomenon when conditions come together perfectly it was the title of the presentation “When Social Media meets Affiliate Marketing” from Triumphant Events.

I recently made a little video.

I am constantly impressed by the wide variety of activities the Union are involved in and was rummaging through my hard drive and looking at footage I’ve filmed or been sent this year so decided to condense it all down into 1 minute 40 seconds, I know this only shows a wee bit of what the Union does but I hope it brings back some fond memories.

Me in reply to Andy, 13/03/2009: Andy, I’m still listed as the Editor, as this is still a role that I take very seriously.

Just under a year ago I was elected by my peers to be the editor of Pugwash News. When I was elected I made a promise to the student body to edit the newspaper to the best of my ability, I believe that they don’t expect me to jump ship when a better offer comes along.

So in agreement with the Editor-in-Chief, the Returning Officer, The President and the editorial team of Pugwash News I have continued to act as the Editor.

We did this on an understanding of transparency, to ensure the utmost transparency and fairness, the following steps have been taken.

• I would not be involved in any way with Elections coverage.
• Journalists covering the elections would report directly to the MAPO
• The login details and access to the editorial email addresses have been made available to the Copy Editor and the MAPO.
• Regular reviews of this agreement are being made.
• All content is subject to approval by the MAPO, Communications Manager and Returning Officer before publication.

As editor I have continued to act with what is a part of my social and volunteering life, in the same way that a captain of sports team continues to compete side by side with his team even whilst campaigning for a position.

Abdul Q, 14/03/2009: You have so much experience in the written media, but a lot of people feel that with modern multimedia, the radio and TV stations need to have more weight put behind them. How would you propose todo this?

Thank you for your comment, I agree that I have a great deal of experience in written media, I also agree that multimedia content is incredibly important to communicating with students. It is for this reason that last year that me and Tom Worman created upsu.tv as an outlet for video content.

Looking forwards and how to develop our interactive and multi-media content we need together to ensure that the radio and tv is listened to more, the answer to this is not to broadcast differently, it is to push the quality of the content forward.

PureFM has moved leaps forward in recent years to being more than a radio broadcaster and being a multimedia outlet and this needs to continue. For PureFM to continue growing the answer lies in continuing to develop its own brand of radio, more live events, more local acts, more student news and views.
With UPSU.TV live broadcasting events is possible and should be available, not constant broadcasting but important events such as the Election Q&A sessions, sports matches and societies events but also the democratic side of the Union, why can’t student council be available to watch online? Distance students and those that can’t make the events will still be able to hold their democratically elected officials to account all through our multimedia content.

upsu.tv is currently not even a member of the National Association of Student Televison, a subscription that costs only about £60 and would offer the team so much more support, recognition and respect.

The simple answer on how to push PureFM and upsu.tv forward is more students, more promotion, more cross platform cooperation and more resources.

The Union has two broadcasters, based out of two completely separate parts of the Union. We need to pull all our Union’s media together to ensure that together we are all working together to grow and prosper.

Mogulus.com – Ustream.tv

With the ever so growing world of youtube.com, pod-casts, and blog’s there is a new type of web media developing.

Live Broadcasting or Live Video Streaming. We have had the use of web cams since 1991 when it was first developed at Cambridge University, it was used to just point at a coffee table. (WOW! let me tell you that is what i want to see when get online every day!) Today we do more than that | | the uses are endless, from wi-fi capable security cameras to blogging and podcasts.  YouTube.com took off in its recent years after being bought out by google.com and now it is  ranked #3 in most traffic on the web. They opened the doorway for sites such as Mogulous, Ustream, Kyte, and Stickam.

Mogulus.com launched it beta service in May of 2007 and has been working strong ever since. It’s priorities lie in channel branding and ease of usability for the user. Mogulus offers two types of services. It’s free service which has ad placements for mogulus and does not allow for HD streaming. Also, the channel is not fully brandable because of the mogulous ads. This is nothing to be sad about in the long. It has one of the web’s most sofisticated camera control system.

Control Room

Just a really clean interface and really easy to understand. One of the other great features of Mogulus is it allows multiple cameras and feeds to be sent into to the cue. Whether you are using another angle for a show or wanting to import from YouTube.com most is possible with this. Mogulus is not to hard to set up but can be a bit tricky in the beginning to get a hold of. I do want to say that Mogulus.com does have a PAY service now that allows more bandwidth, HD Streaming, and FULL channel branding along with other perks.

Ustream.tv is another big brand out there starting in 2006 it has been seen being used by artists for its embedding and chat room purpose. It allows users to embed the video player anywhere they wish while other users can view it without loggin in. The Camera Control Console is not as sophisticated as Mogulu.com’s but still works well and has some great features.

Ustream Console

Ustream.tv’s console does have some better options for video and audio quality. The text overlays are not very editable and useless if you are looking for a high quality.  They allow twitter posting during feeds and being able to create real time polls during your show. These are neat applications to have but what is the true reason for having your video channel? Ustream is a free service and is very easy to set up.

Both services are great it just depends on your use as to which service to use.

Some great uses of these are for Video Blogging. It allows you to create a following of user who feel as if they know you. Some of the hardship in blogging is it hard for people to feel like they really know you when they are only reading what you write and not seeing you. Live Broadcasting uses inflections and body language, it allows the user to really feel who they are reading from. A great idea would be to combine the 2. have a typed blog such as this and create a video podcast to go with each one that just covers each point so the user can see if they want to dig further into the subject. Also it does create more exposure having video and text based blogs. You are now on 2 sites GREAT SEO and you are catering to blind and deaf people. didn’t think about that one did you!

Some other sites that are similiar and deserve name are Kyte.tv – Stickam.com – YouTube.com/live
