Following the close of the Monastery night club in 2011, this ode to NYC warehouse clubbing moved in and quickly made a name for itself. A member of the drinks in jars movement, Oh Hello! is now established as a chic and hipster destination and attracts some great local and international live acts like Flight Facilities, His Majesty Andre, Flume, Surkin, Russ Chimes and more. You can even witness the odd fashion show.

Generally I dont like top 40 club/house or pop/dance music. That’s a lot of Dont Likes for a blog about what I like, I know… I mean Yes, I get down to a few of Lady Gaga’s tunes and YES, I may know the words to some Timbaland hits. Im just saying I will leave the club or bar immediately before that so called bass drops and the glow sticks come out.

That being said I want to talk about ANNA ROSE formally known as Menega,Miss. She has changed up her style and sound a bit and is back in action performing her brand of pop/dance tunes with some dub step/ house flair. “But Dawn..You just said…” Yes I know I said I dont like that stuff but I like this girl.

Anna Rose puts on a great show and has an amazing voice that needs no auto-tune despite it peeking through in a song or two. Her new tracks are perfect for a DJ to spin at any weekend night club while her live shows are more stripped down but still in keeping with her upbeat, body moving vibe.

She’s a friend who I have gotten drunk with, danced with and shared good times with. I also sang back ups for her when she was known as Menega,Miss. Her genuine approach to her craft inspired me and her songs made me dance like a happy idiot. When performing with her I was always surrounded by a diverse crew from eclectic stylists to hilarious and fierce transvestites. It was always a god damn pleasure. I took note at how hard she works to brand herself and surround herself with committed talent. It gave me new insight on the “pop world” I usually dismiss.

Though her new shows may not be as theatrical as her former alter ego the quality of her performance will speak for itself. Check her out Sunday June 9th at The Basment Tavern in Santa Monica. You will have a blast! and go to http://www.facebook.com/realannarose like that sexy bitches’ page!

Bottles of lambrini, out of time dancing, swing-dance mosh pits; Vukovi’s headliner at Flat 0/1

Bottles of lambrini, out of time dancing, swing-dance mosh pits; Vukovi’s headliner at Flat 0/1 on May 17th was not what would you would call a conventional gig.

Opened by Seams, fresh from the announcement earlier that day that they will be playing the T Break stage at T in the Park, this was the first time I (and many other members of the audience) had heard the five-piece. I was blown away by their catchy riffs, tight performance and outstanding vocals. My only niggle with this excellent support act was the lack of confidence from vocalist Katie Lynch. Her stunning voice was undermined by her apparent shyness – it seemed that she doesn’t know how good she truly is, and so her connection with the audience was hindered – utterly unecessary with such a supportive crowd behind her and such a huge talent.

In contrast, the stage presence of Vukovi singer Janine Shilstone was phenomenal. As the band came barrelling onto the stage, her immediate rapport with the audience – making everyone chuckle explaining their challenge to down a bottle of cherry lambirini before the set was up – broke the ice and got everyone to loosen up enough to dance about from the start. This was also aided by the lack of traditional raised platform stage; the band being on the same level as the crowd gave the performance a stripped-back, down to earth feel, making it feel like a party laughing with your pals, not a performance- no easy feat for a band, but one they pulled off easily through their impressive stage presence. This was lead by Janine’s ability to strut confidently out into the crowd, mesmerizing enough to ensure that not one eye left her during the entire set.

From start to finish the audience were captivated; the moody harmonies in the opening ‘Shattered Chances’ showed the expert musicianship of the whole group. A couple more songs in and it was clear this was not just another show – Vukovi appeared to be loving performing to us just as much as we were enjoying watching them. The enthusiastic revellers were even treated to new material, which was a mix of lighter, bouncier songs and a song so new it hasn’t been named yet being possibly the darkest heaviest material we’ve heard from Vukovi yet. The new tunes even included an amusing dance routine, with guitarist Hamish Reilly’s concentration face being a very entertaining sight and bassist Jason Trotter out of sync with everyone else, causing much chuckling throughout the crowd.

Despite there being a somewhat eclectic mix of styles in the new songs, it went down a storm, with it being obvious that come the launch of the new mini album in the autumn, crowds will soon be as word perfect with Vukovi’s new material as they are with the best loved songs. Such fan dedication was shown by how intensely the audience belted out their (arguably) most popular songs – the huge sing-along reaction to ‘Target Practise’, ‘Schwagger’ and ‘Thick Skinned’ motivated the band to keep playing at an exceptionally high standard, despite being a little worse for wear due to their incessant lambirini chugging.

The entertaining breakdown of another new song (the working title of ‘Trashy Song’ gives you the right idea) into some contrasting gentle swing music as Janine encouraged some 1920′s style dancing was a welcome surprise, especially when it suddenly morphed into a mosh pit as the band switched into a heavy cover of Labrinth’s ‘Earthquake’. After many shouts for an encore, a rocked-up cover of Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ finished the evening.

With such a fun filled, party-esque set, Vukovi stripped themselves down to their core values, showing that they can truly deliver the only two things a band really needs; excellent musicianship and a true ability to perform like proffessionals, even in a more intimate gig.

In terms of enjoyment, this was arguably Vukovi’s strongest Glasgow show to date, easily proving why they’re one of Glasgow’s finest bands – and why they’re going to climb high.

Blogging seems to be a great way of getting noticed these days, we have had a few more twitter followers and facebook likes so thank you, however a few more wouldn’t go a miss if you have the time of course!

It’s amazing when you write a song, paint a picture, tell a story in anyway, shape or form how the meaning of what you wrote the song about, how the music inspired you or what made you paint that particular picture it always will bring a smile to your face. I listen to our album all the time (That may be big headed i don’t know! i just like the songs!) and it always makes me smile thinking about the recording process, or the buzz i got after we had finished a track or come up with an amazing riff or melody and i suppose if we don’t fill Wembley we will be proud of what we have done up to now, and what we will do

Anyhow, thats the sentimental part over! SPREAD THE LOVE

Who? BOY Where? The Great Hall (Toronto, ON) When? May 16, 2013 As popular as it is to complain abou

Who? BOY Where? The Great Hall (Toronto, ON) When? May 16, 2013

As popular as it is to complain about unpaid internships, I have to admit that mine comes with some pretty cool perks too – like free tickets, and being exposed to new music. This was the case with the duo Boy, whom I had never heard of until I was given the opportunity to see them last week. It’s a mission statement of mine to always be honest, but I hope you don’t perceive the above as a source of biased opinion because I really, truly, enjoyed myself at this show.

I tried to do some reconnaissance work beforehand to acquaint myself with their music, but it’s infuriatingly difficult to Google “boy band” and not be looking for pictures of New Kids On The Block. If you’re looking for some background behind them though, I recommend this piece by Ben Rayner of The Toronto Star.

If I had to describe the vocals of Boy it would be Sara Bareilles meets Kathleen Edwards, but with their own German/Swiss (yet perfectly fluent English lyrics) charm. Valeska Steiner (lead vocals) is clearly the star of the show, often interacting with the small audience and taking advantage of the intimate setting that I love The Great Hall for. Guitarist/backing vocalist Sonja Glass on the other hand opts to take the quiet and shy route to the point where you almost forget that she’s there until she finally says introduces a song about halfway through the set. She seems to be content with letting the blonde have more fun, and Valeska is fit for the task.

This was the first time I had heard a lot of their material, and the duo (along with a third backing guitarist) managed to hold my attention and not let go for the entirely acoustic set. Stand-outs included the delicate Drive Darling, Waitress (which explores the monotony of waiting for life to start in the service industry – god how I can relate), the sinister-sounding Boris, and Skin. Boy’s songwriting and delivery is so clear and relatable you almost forget that English isn’t their first language. Their flair for storytelling is what breathes life into the relatively calm and quiet songs.

There were a couple of dancing-in-my-chair moments though, such as their North American debut-single “Little Numbers” which is the best song about giving a boy your phone number since Carly Rae Jepson pwned the topic for an entire radio summer. A stripped-down cover of The Black Keys’s “Lonely Boy” closed their encore, which at first I kind of rolled my eyes at because you simply couldn’t go to a concert in 2012 without hearing a cover of that song. However, it ended up being a successful choice as it woke people up from the dreamy, not-really-dance-conducive set, and it was nice to be able to sing along to all of the words of at least one song. The cover left a nice spring in everyone’s step as we left the venue, and that’s what every new artist should aim for.

Boy is still in that endearing phase that most new bands of their genre goes through; their banter is a little weak but they’re trying, they laughingly admit to accidentally mixing up the setlist, they’re limited on what instruments and backing musicians they can bring with them overseas (there was a rather amusing Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist moment when Valeska had to whip out the drum machine), Sonja could use a bit more courage, and most of their audience consisted of industry people and German-Canadian teens that spend a lot of time on YouTube. But the creativity and the content is there, and with a little more time it will be a lot easier to find them online.

Play their album Mutual Friends before you go to sleep one night, it’s the prettiest lullaby I’ve heard in a while.

Fall Out Boy may have just returned from a three-year music hiatus, but it’s been four years since the band’s last visit to The LC Pavilion in 2009. A fast sell-out show, the packed house of new and old fans was ready to see the band “save Rock and Roll.”

Hollywood Holt, Chicago-based rapper, was the only opening act for our stop and hand-selected by the band to play. He isn’t very well known, but he brought an interesting hip-hop performance to ready the crowd for the band everyone came to see. It’s no surprise fans enjoyed the rapper because Fall Out Boy are no strangers to linking up with famous hip-hop artists on their songs, including Jay-Z and 2 Chainz. Hollywood Holt’s performance was fun but it was only the calm before the storm.

Fall Out Boy entered to “Thriller,” the opening track to their 2008 release Infinity on High, and from there the rush of nostalgia began. It was the gratification the entire crowd had been awaiting for these long four years. The band continued to From Under the Cork Tree cuts “I Slept With Someone From Fall Out Boy…” and a crowd provoking “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me.”

Patrick, still sporting a hat as always, hit his falsetto notes better than ever and seemed so grateful and excited to return to Ohio. Moving onto chant-friendly tracks “Disloyal Order of the Water Buffaloes” and “This Ain’t a Scene” the sold out crowd was in full participation echoing the lyrics back to the band and clapping along during the breakdowns of the songs.

Beginning to mix in songs such as riff-heavy cut “The Phoenix” and pop sounding tracks “Where Did the Party Go” and “Alone Together,” the crowd was surprisingly receptive to the band’s newer music. With the album just being released a month ago, the crowd singing the lyrics fully back to the band proved its success with the fans.

It wasn’t all new stuff though, as Fall Out Boy quickly reminded the crowd of the songs that got them hooked on the band in the first place. When Pete Wentz wasn’t swinging around his bass while performing, he was connecting with the audience during the intermissions. “We always enjoy coming through Ohio,” said Wentz. “Being from Chicago, anywhere in the Midwest really feels like home.” This transitioned into the band’s most widely known songs “Grand Theft Autumn” and “Sugar We’re Goin’ Down.”

Continuously jumping from old hits to new tracks, the band spread out a perfect set list to please everyone in the crowd. Their latest hit “Young Volcanoes” was a pavilion-wide sing-a-long that faded into the shriek-drawing bass line of “Dance, Dance.” They closed their set with powerful singles “I Don’t Care” and “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” which just made the sea of fans rowdy and wanting more. As a response to the chants of “F-O-B” and an amazing crowd-orchestrated call of the “Oh’s” from “My Song Knows What You Did…” Patrick returned to take a seat at a keyboard alongside the rest of the band.

“That was incredible!” Patrick stated, as he announced there were a couple of songs left to play. “This song is really the reason we are all here tonight,” he continued as he played the title track off their latest, Save Rock and Roll. From this slower ballad, the energy returned with “Thnks fr the Mmrs.” Taking a second to catch their breath, the band and crowd all knew what was next to come as the grand finale. As tradition to their live shows, the band performed “Saturday” and truly made it seem like nothing had changed at all since their hiatus. Wentz jumped into the crowd, ditching his bass during his vocals on the track and proved why they chose to always close with the track.

As the evening came to an end, Fall Out Boy left the crowd satisfied and made up for their shocking hiatus. Playing all the hits as well as seven songs from their latest album, they covered all of their bases. Seeing these songs performed live again made it seem like the band never left. Having seen the band twice before, this was definitely the best they have performed and sounded, as well as, the most excited they have been to play a show. With The LC at full capacity, it goes to show that you don’t really know what you have until it’s gone, and Fall Out Boy returning reminded fans why they fell in love with the pop-punk band in the first place.

Raevennan Husbandes, Oliver Rudge, Dan Foden, live at OST, Norwich, review I had considered catching

Raevennan Husbandes, Oliver Rudge, Dan Foden, live at OST, Norwich, review

I had considered catching an hour or so at Lights Out before this gig, but fatigue and what felt like the return of my cold meant it was a bit of a struggle even to make this 9pm start for OST but the lure of hearing and seeing Raevennan Husbandes again was too much to resist.

First on the bill though was Dan Foden, playing a solo set. Apparently Dan usually fronts Norwich band The Deadbeats, who I have yet to see perform. Tonight he was accompanied just by his piano. An interesting set, including a song or two from a project of songs with a run time of one minute. He has a good voice and my personal favourite was the song he closed the set with, which he introduced as a track he had only written and composed some four hours earlier.

dan foden

The next act was Oliver Rudge, from Wolverhampton. He started his set with some blistering guitar work and held the attention of all present. His singing style changed several times throughout, and I was less keen when it strayed into high Ed Sheeran territory and at those times I was more impressed with his guitar style than his vocals, but when he sang in his own style was much better. He seemed humble and unassuming, thanked the audience whom he described as the most attentive he had played to.

oliver rudge

Of course the night’s headliner was the unmistakable Raevennan Husbandes. She had actually been sat at the end of the same table as me all evening so I was aware of how much she was watching and supporting the other acts on the night, which was nice to see. She eased gently into a beautiful set, with her sumptuous voice, easy style and gorgeous guitar work. Every song was just a musical caress, and her manner of speaking between songs was just deliciously charming and pleasant, for that alone one would fall for her charms but with her amazing songs it is hard to see how she will not go onto greater things. She talked easily when introducing a song that was the first she wrote after a serious illness that had left her temporarily blind and deaf, which must have been unimaginably traumatic. At another stage she mentioned that the previous night she had played a private members’ club in London, and spotted in the audience Zoe Wannamaker, “The one in Harry Potter who teaches people how to drive brooms” As I said, deliciously charming and self-effacing, a cheerful and eminently likable personality, with big hair and an even bigger talent. If you get a chance to hear her play do not miss it, I noticed many local musicians in the audience tonight to witness this event. I was delighted when she announced she has a CD coming out this summer.

Second Street School competed in the Music In The Park at King’s Island this past weekend. Despite the thunderstorms that cut their trip short, they managed to bring back TWO 1st Place Trophies and a 2nd Place as well! Mrs Maria Bartholomew says, “the elementary and middle schoool percussion ensembles placed first with ratings of ‘excellent’. The elementary treble choir placed second with a rating of ‘excellent’. Sixteen chaperones accompanied 40-plus students”. She adds, “I owe them a huge ‘Thank You!’ because I could not have done this trip without them. Many parents provided breakfast and snack items for this trip. Terrific parents!”

She also says that “the students are already talking about next year. Severe thunderstorms made it necessary to come back about an hour and a half early. The kids didn’t seem to notice or care.”

Second Street School will hold their end of year concert on Thursday May 30 at 5:30 pm (in the school’s gymnasium). It is free and open to the public. The choir, band, and Orff ensembles will be performing. There is also an art show – featuring the work of our students under the instruction of Mrs. Jody Jaques. The Family Involvement Committee will be providing refreshments after the program. All are welcome!

Feral Mouth, Mari Joyce, Sefo Kanuteh at Spiegeltent grounds for NNF13, Sunday 19 May, 2013 review T

Feral Mouth, Mari Joyce, Sefo Kanuteh at Spiegeltent grounds for NNF13, Sunday 19 May, 2013 review

The weather for this festival has not been as kind as it could have been, but at least for this Sunday afternoon’s ‘Lights Out’ session at the Festival beer tent in Chapelfield Gardens it was a little warmer and a bit sunnier too. The informal line up included Feral Mouth, with Georgia Shackleton guesting on fiddle, Mari Joyce with her full band, and Sefo Kanuteh with Pedz from the Ferals jamming on percussion. Also in the line up were The James Frost Band, Koi Paraga, and Nous Parlons Scum but of these I only caught the last song of Koi Paraga.

sefo kanuteh and pedz

As the bands were all performing without PA it could easily have been missed, but while searching for the music I saw Pedz, and he was about to introduce the soothing sounds of Sefo Kanuteh. I have written about Sefo several times recently, and there is not much more I can add, other than to say that his gentle kora playing, even without PA, held the attentive audience transfixed and mesmerised throughout. Pedz, who had arranged this gig, was playing African drum alongside Sefo and it sounded beautiful. Read about Sefo at his permance in Olives the previous Friday here.

sefo and pedz

The beer tent is always so lovely at the Festival, with fine ales and decor by The Bicycle Shop and Frank’s Bar, it has a lovely, easy, boho ambience, with most of the listeners sat relaxed on the floor in front of the stage.

Following Sefo was another ‘unplugged’ set from Feral Mouth, with Georgia Shackleton guesting on violin. Georgia is extremely talented and I had been looking forward to this collaboration with much anticipation ever since I first heard about it, even having spoken with Jape earlier in the week who said “We’d better fit a rehearsal in at some point”! This looseness and informality is part of the Feral charm but also says much about all the musicians’ great talents, and the quiet confidence they have in themselves. They are much better musicians than they would have us believe. I was especially impressed with Georgia today, who really “gets” the band and I think she really adds to the overall sound. I have seen Feral Mouth several times with guest fiddle players – including the legendary jam with Sara Watkins, but aside from that occasion I have been unsure that it quite worked, with Georgia it most certainly does, and I do hope they will perform together again at some point.

georgia, gareth, lake

The set seemed to fly by, and with Jape having to get to a shift at work there was no chance of it being extended, though we were still treated to Darlin’ Corey, Diniler, Nelson, Tatters, and quite a few others. From the moment they started it felt like it was going to be a good one, and it was. They seemed to be having some great fun too, with Holly looking after John’s kids at the back of the stage, one of whom was intent on joining Pedz on drums, quite literally!

The final act that I was able to catch the full set of today was the lovely Mari Joyce and her band. The songs are delicate and the voice as I have mentioned before is fragile yet assured, and very beautiful. She is backed by a wonderful band who compliment her singing style extremely well.

mari joyce

I speak in a little more detail about Mari at her Birdcage gig earlier in the month.

mari joyce

All in all an extremely lovely, relaxed and informal afternoon of superb music. I feel the Festival Gardens have a little less going on this year, which is a shame but understandable in these times of cuts to funding, but these little musical corners are often the highlights and memories and therefore I was glad to have caught most of this session.

Feral Mouth will be headlining the afternoon session of the next Norwich Rocks at Gibraltar Gardens on Bank Holiday Sunday (May 26) at about 5pm, and The Cottage on Silver Road at about 8pm the same day.

Georgia Shackleton performs solo and also with the country/hillbilly band Rattleshack http://www.facebook.com/Rattleshack

This is from Show #2 which was preceded by “Another Girl” from the movie, “Help”, and transitions at the end into “You Won’t See Me”. We worked hard on getting the songs melded together in a coherent fashion. We would go through several ideas and then choose the best way to go from one song to another. Sometimes, when they were in different keys, we would create a musical bridge to get to the next song’s key. Other times we would try and tie words that were the same in both songs together.

I loved this song when it came out and STILL love it. Jon does a superb version of John Lennon on this tune which was never on a Beatles album and only released as a 45. Ken, Paul and I are on the three part backup harmonies. We spent a lot of time getting the instruments to sound like the record, and I think we succeeded. Taken from our Calgary set, it is my opinion that we captured how the Beatles would have done it “live”.

As a side note, I had been collecting Beatles 45 picture covers for years. I would go to the cutout bins and look for old Beatles 45s with covers like the one above and put them in my collection. It was very complete and probably worth a LOT of money. Unfortunately, during one of my moves, all my records got left behind and when I came back to retrieve them, they were gone. Hopefully the person who took them realized what he had and turned them over to a collector who would appreciate them. This was one of the cherished covers I owned.

A fantastic thought is to consider positioning a single dynamic mic useless-middle to a speaker and a different on the edge. You could also attempt placing mics across several speakers if you have a cabinet with far more than the solitary speaker. It is really also well worth tilting one particular of the mics a little off-axis, as this will give one more variation to the seem.

4. Blend shut and distant mics
If you possess a first rate condenser microphone this technique is perfect. Position the dynamic mic(s) shut to the amp as explained in the illustration above. With the more highly effective and delicate condenser, placement it everywhere from 6 inches to a handful of feet away. It will almost certainly acquire some experimentation to discover the very best consequence. With the independent indicators you can then select to mix them or maintain them on different tracks.

five. Entrance and Back again miking of open up-backed combo amps
Spot a dynamic near as explained in system one or two. Then location a condenser a little length at the rear of the amp as opposed to in front as explained in the previous illustration. It’s normal to mix the two seems, but maintain in head that this is an innovative technique, and it can introduce section issues which take some audio engineering skill to deal with.

When recording your guitar audio, it really is best to try to document as “dry” as attainable. The purpose for this is that the moment the guitar signal has been recorded with the outcome, it is really not possible to get rid of it. You could be in a scenario wherever the guitar keep track of is recorded with an outcome and then in the closing blend-down, the observe doesn’t suit in with the rest of the devices. Of training course this does believe that you have the outboard products and skill to insert quality outcomes to the last blend. But it is a fantastic principle to keep in intellect and most rudimentary recording established-ups element some kind of consequences mail channel. This generally indicates that you can plug your dry recorded guitar keep track of into an external stomp-box or outcomes device and re-file the consequence to a new observe. It offers you much additional regulate in excess of the finished product.

A guitar results pedal is a product that you hook up in in between the electrical guitar and the amplifier. Its objective is to incorporate a switchable audio outcome to your taking part in. It is most likely well worth receiving the terminology out of the way 1st: even though there are pedals that sweep forwards and backwards, like a wah-wah pedal or a quantity pedal, most consequences pedals are just on/off gadgets – they have a basic foot-change to either have interaction or bypass the effect. Finding out about piano chords may be beneficial as it´s generally less complicated to discover harmony with the piano somewhat than with the guitar.

It is also crucial to understand about unique capabilities that you will have to do by on your own, abilities like realizing stompbox how to adjust electric powered and acoustic guitar strings is a ought to for each guitar pupil.

Punk rock knows no boundaries! A night of good ol’ punk rock tore it up in Baldwin Park last F

Punk rock knows no boundaries! A night of good ol’ punk rock tore it up in Baldwin Park last Friday night, with D.I. headlining a show with Yeastie Boys, Destruction Made Simple, and more. In addition to the bands, a few merchandise vendors showed up to sell music-related paraphernalia, such as records or personal accessories. This all-ages show cost only $10, and unlike how I mentioned last week, the venue allowed ins-and-outs, meaning attendees could easily leave to buy food or drinks to bring back. Although they had a bar, they only served generic drinks, while a liquor store across the street sold a few craft beers that cost less than the venue relative to the drink portion. All of the night’s bands played a good hard set of punk rock, with no real surprises other than a good time rocking out to the night’s talent.

Gritos Enfadosos opened the night with their set of punk rock all in Spanish. As a local band with little exposure, they played a typical street punk set, sounding like a high school garage band. Surprisingly, all members of the band shared equal time on the mic, including the “stage hand” that did not play any instruments. As a result, Gritos Enfadosos has no official lead vocalist, since all of them contribute equally. Halfway through their 20-minute set, a girl from the audience joined them on stage, and she provided vocals for a few of the songs. Just like the guys, she also screamed her head off singing into the mic. For these guys, adding some instrumental variety can help them go far in the music industry.

Hailing from the San Gabriel Valley came Blank Expressions playing second in the night. This female-fronted punk rock band garnered a lot of attention from the audience, which anyone would expect in a genre dominated by males. When you think about who listens to punk rock, without a doubt, guys outnumber the gals on this one. Whenever a female-fronted punk rock band does roll around, I make it a priority to attend their show. After a few songs into the Blank Expressions set, I started to pick up hints of other genres. Blank Expressions did not play traditional punk rock, but they added a hint of pop and a dash of folk music. Some could call their music nu-punk, since their sound does not resemble many other existing bands. Blank Expressions exhibited their experience in the music industry at this show, and they proved that they will not disappear any time soon, which means you can catch them performing again very soon, as soon as in a week and a half.

The last of the night’s openers, Hollywood Hate, started their set to an eager crowd. The audience could not wait to get down and dirty for their favorite underground punk rock band. Playing a strong 30-minute set, Hollywood Hate’s relentlessly fast punk rock music stirred up the crowd into a frenzy in the pit. Perhaps the crowd expended too much energy during the set, as the crowd started wide, then fizzled down to one or two guys when Hollywood Hate had about ten minutes left in their set to go. At this point, the children present got into it in the pit. With the bulk of the pit gone, the little ones could mess around to their hearts’ content within the bubble of their own pit. Hollywood Hate always plays a solid set wherever they go, and they delivered another killer performance to Baldwin Park on this night.

The first sub-headliner of the night, Destruction Made Simple, took to the stage next. In the photos below, you may notice guitarist Andy sitting down. The band had played an East LA backyard show the week prior, and at some point in the night, Andy sprained his ankle. Destruction Made Simple still delivered a badass show, and in fact, this may have improved Andy’s live performance, since this prevents him from bouncing around the entire time and roots him in place so he can focus 100% of his efforts on the guitar. The crowd may have taken notice too, as the pit raged on during the entire set and never let up. From start to finish, Destruction Made Simple’s street punk set pounded out hard and fast sounds, enough to resuscitate even zombies. They still bear the power and stamina that they possessed all the way back in 2000 when they first started in the San Gabriel Valley. Due to Andy’s injury, the band will not play any shows until late July, so keep an eye out for an announcement on their Facebook page when the time approaches.

Once the next sub-headliner, Yeastie Boys, entered the room, the party immediately started, despite the band still needing some tune-ups required to perform. This clown-themed punk rock band from Costa Mesa travels with clown get-ups, toys, dancers, and more as they rock out with their original songs plus various covers of songs throughout time. Once they got started, the crowd erupted into a room-wide pit, complete with all the toys the band members had thrown around earlier, such as beach balls, balloons, confetti, tape rollers, party poppers, inflatables, and more. While everyone in the pit enjoyed the festivities, the little ones had exhausted much of their energy by now, as some of them had fallen asleep on the side of the room. True to their core, the parents stayed in the room all night for their love of punk rock (and of the last band).

While the night’s headliner, D.I., continued to set up, vocalist Casey Royer delighted the crowd with his trademark random conversations on the mic. No one could really understand what he spoke about or why, but everyone went along with it anyways. The audience really should learn to manage their energy a lot better, as D.I. did not receive as large a pit as Yeastie Boys got. If you have attended a D.I. show within the past year, you would not miss much at this show. D.I. always plays a tremendous show of classic punk rock, but their set list has remained largely stagnant in many of their shows in the past year. Although predictable, everyone loved all the songs D.I. played, and sang along to almost every song. I ended up on the receiving end of a boot to my chest/rib after getting pushed down in the pit, and I saw another guy intentionally kick me too! He did not just run into me – he wound up his leg and swung right for me. With this, D.I. proves that punk rock never died.
