Here’s Peter Tosh live at The Roxy in L.A. in 1979 plus Toots & The Maytals live just a few days before this 33 years ahead Midnight Dread aired its fierce radio show Mikey Dread Salute on KTIM, the natty North Bay noise, plus a cavalcade of seven inch Jamaican singles from Debonair’s “Across Trench Town” and The Heptones & Lee Perry’s “Sufferer’s Time/Dub” to The Mighty Diamonds’ “Release The Chains” single mix of “Gotta Get Away”. It’s the week Saturday Night Live did a skit on KTIM radio but in their version of the station it was ‘K-Time, All-Time, All The Time’ as every new minute is announced with glee & nuance. Meanwhile on the real KTIM Sunday night brings reggae music in droves minute by minute with the week’s Reggae Calendar promising a free Memorial Day “Last Blast On The Grass” in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park at Marx Meadows with Jah Love & Sweet Tommy in a benefit/signature gathering event for NORML & CMI-80. The absolute highlight of the program is Joe Higg’s heartfelt rendition of his amazing love song “My Devotion (Has A Definition)”. Definitely! One Love every One.

Last night, Meek Mill kicked off the Memorial Day Weekend celebrations by hitting up Room Service out in Miami. He then proceeded to treat the people to a performance of his latest track ‘Levels’, which will appear on his forthcoming project ‘Dreamchasers 3′.

I don’t know if you saw this… but The Band Perry’s performance was ahmazing at the Billboards.

Several years ago, JEMS acquired three reel-to-reel master tapes from the private collection of a recording engineer. All were 1/2-track, 15 IPS reels (this and one other 10″, the third 7″) which helped add to their credibility (most fans and collectors in the ’70s were not working with tapes in those professional standards), as did some of the other tapes we didn’t get which were clearly from studio sessions. This famous recording of Bob Marley and the Wailers at Max’s Kansas City was one of the three.

The entire contents of the reel are what has been classified for years by Marley collectors as “Set Three” or “Segment Three” of the trio of known recordings from the July ’73 run at Max’s. The exact recording dates of the three sets are unverified, but they are all drawn from the six night run in July. Previous torrents of this material suggest “there were two shows per night and three shows on the weekend,” all opening for, amazingly, Bruce Springsteen.

The track list of our copy varies slightly from the widely available version(s) of Set Three in that it is longer and includes “Stir It Up,” where most copies stop at “Kinky Reggae.” The version of “Stir It Up” is different from that of Set One or Set Two. It is an audience, not soundboard recording, but may well be an “open mic” recording, perhaps from mics mounted at the mixing desk and recorded with permission to document the performance.

Right, so predictions! Getting right into it because last night’s performances were, well- I don’t know. I want to say shocking, but I also want to say not surprising. I’m in a bit of an oxymoronic pickle here. I’m just going to come right out and tell you who I expect will be going home. 

My top 3 choices for who should/might be going home tonight:

L.O.V.E – When they rapped they were okay, when they sung my ears bled and they sang way too much than was necessary last night.

Tom Bachelor – His mediocre singing was offset against a creepy performance.

Fletcher – what was that? He sounded pained.

Those I believe should be given another chance:

Cassie: Daniel’s poor song choice really let her down last night. I doubt she’ll be sent home.

Those who did relatively well:

Anna – not so forgettable last night. However I think it was song choice that did it, her voice was perf for her song and it showed.

Maaka – I may have been a bit rough about him getting through over Grace, however he aced his performance last night. *Said grudgingly.* Although my sister noted that his outfit looked like something her female teacher has worn before.

Meh:

Eden – I was bored. This is a reflection of Daniel’s shite song choice, however.

Taye – Haven’t really got an opinion.

Moorhouse – Yeah I don’t even really care.

Benny – Underwhelming

Everyone else:

Gap 5 – Interesting, their harmonies went a bit south toward the end.

Whenua – He can do so much better. He’s my pick to win the competition. But idk, people are all ‘but we’ve already got a Stan Walker’ and those people might well go for other choices.

Jackie – I’m still on the fence about this one. She’s hasn’t got Lana Del Ray’s charisma.

Those who need to go home for a bit:

Daniel Bedingfield – Say it with me ‘BETTER SONG CHOICES’ or at least lay off the hot sauce buddy.

Ruby – Another judge whose song choice could have one of her contestants sent home.

Special Mentions:

- ‘Golden Thrush’ Hahahah Daniel, go home you’re drunk.

- Mel was speechless after Maaka’s performance mainly because she couldn’t speak much for fear of inhaling smoke fumes.

- Need more judge bitch fights. Can they just go at each other already?
