Vodafone. I am sorry I do not understand

I felt the need to write this article after a few very stressful phone calls with Vodafone, and their so called “English” speaking employees.

I had a problem regarding my phone just before Christmas, and the service that I received from Vodafone was quite simplyunacceptable.

I won’t go in to the details but it was eventually resolved with me being refunded a substantial amount back in to my account, and two months free line rental (yes, they did admit to a very poor service, and this was a gesture of “good will”).

I had many phone calls back and forth with Vodafone while this situation was being investigated trying to find out what the hell was happening, but on one particular day I really wanted to speak to someone English.
I had been dealing with foreign speaking call operators a fair bit, and I was getting very frustrated!

In my opinion, of the four or five that I had spoken to, I found them to not explain themselves clearly, I found that they did not really understand what I was trying to explain to them and lastly, I found that they did not seem to care too much.

Now, maybe I was just unlucky with the ones that I had interactions with, but when I actually managed to speak to an Englishman, he could not do enough for me.

I found him to be very apologetic, very helpful, and we had a conversation that flowed freely without all the “what was that?“, “sorry, can you repeat what you are saying?” and “I don’t understand Sir” rubbish that I was getting with the foreigners every time I spoke to them!

Why do these companies in call centres insist on employing people that struggle to speak our English language? I find it to be an absolute disgrace!

On another occasion with Vodafone, I was adamant that someone English would assist me with my query’s.

I rang up and did the usual “press 2 for this option” and “press 4 for this option”etc. etc., and I was just praying that someone English would answer the phone.

Every time it connected, I had the unfortunate luck of a foreigner answering!…and every time I hung up on them.

It got me thinking : “Where the hell are the English people within Vodafone?”

I am particularly fussy when it comes to getting a new phone / contract, and I always go around a few of the mobile phone shops in my home town prior to me renewing my new contract to see what deals each company can offer me.

Over the past six years or so that I have done this, in each shop, the workers were majority English, with maybe one, or two at a push, of our foreign friends in there.

This time around, I did not see one white person working in either O2, Orange, Three, or Vodafone!

Vodafone used to have four English people selling their products, now they have four ethnics selling their products!

A similar situation has occurred in my canteen at work – it used to be predominantly English people working in there.

Suddenly, a Polish woman was employed as the manager, and now we have all her Polish friends working in there, and the English are out of work!  It is an absolute joke!

Luckily, my home town has not been colonised too badly (yet), but the surrounding towns are even worse ie Slough, and Reading.
It really is a case of spot the Englishman!

I am planning to write a letter of complaint to Vodafone, but I was also wondering if we have a right to ask to speak to an English person when phoning these call centres?

With the Vodafone situation, after getting very irate on the odd occasion, I asked to speak to a supervisor, but even then, I was put through to someone with a poor grasp of our English language!

Any advice on where we stand, and our rights to speak to someone who is English would be much appreciated!

Rabies case confirmed in London

A case of rabies has been confirmed in London, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said.

The potentially fatal disease was identified in a patient who was bitten by a dog in South Asia.

The patient, whose age and gender was not given, is being treated at London’s Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

A hospital spokeswoman: “We would like to reassure our patients, visitors and staff there is no risk to them as a result of this case.”

All relevant contacts with people the patient has had since being bitten have been followed up, the HPA said.

Rabies is usually transferred through saliva from the bite of an infected animal, with dogs being the most common transmitter of rabies to humans.

‘Negligible’ risk

Dr Brian McCloskey, director of the HPA for London, said: “Despite there being tens of thousands of rabies cases each year worldwide, there have been no documented laboratory confirmed cases of human-to-human spread.

Dr Brian McCloskey: “We have been very precautionary with some of the family and the health care workers but there’s no risk to the public”

“Therefore the risk to other humans or animals from a patient with rabies is considered negligible.”

More than 55,000 people are thought to die from rabies each year, with most cases occurring in South and South-East Asia.

Professor David Brown, a rabies expert at the HPA, said only four cases of human rabies acquired from dogs, all from abroad, had been identified in the UK since 2000.

Chief constable Peter Fahy (right) dismissed the comments made by Judge Gerald Clifton (left) Manchester’s top cop has dismissed comments from a judge who suggested the gang picked white girls because they were not of their ‘community or religion’. As he jailed the nine men Judge Gerald Clifton told them: “Some of you acted as you did to satiate your lust, some to make money. All of you treated them as though they were worthless and beyond all respect. “I believe one of the factors that led to that was that they were not of your community or religion.” But Chief Constable Peter Fahy said he had a different view to Judge Clifton, telling us the gang members targeted girls because they were vulnerable, not because they were white. One of the defendants is an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan but the other eight are of Pakistani heritage. Seven were born in Pakistan. All the men are Muslim. Mr Fahy said: “Overall, our feeling is that if these girls had been from Asian or black backgrounds, it wouldn’t have made much difference to these men. “I don’t want to undermine a whole community by saying ‘the Pakistani community has to sort this out’. It’s just as daft as saying white people have to sort out people who commit robberies. From our knowledge of sex offending, there’s a whole range of perpetrators coming from all sorts of backgrounds. “This is really about vulnerability and criminals who wanted to take advantage. The judge thinks what the judge thinks. It’s about men exploiting vulnerable girls.” Mr Fahy said he feared far right groups were out to create trouble. He said: “We are trying to maintain a very difficult situation with outside groups trying to stir up community tensions. The danger is that young people get involved with something they later regret.” He praised the team of detectives who pieced together the evidence which smashed the ring. He said: “It’s not simply a matter of finding the offender. Often the victim knows the offender. They are sometimes vulnerable damaged witnesses. “The officers in this case are very pleased they managed just to get the girls to court and withstand all the challenges in a very long trial court where their backgrounds are going to be focussed on and exploited by the defence.”

Victim: Alan Smith was stabbed in a ‘frenzied attack’ in a diner after asking if the alleged killer’s crying daughter was alright, a court heard

A father out celebrating his daughter’s birthday was brutally knifed to death in front of his horrified family just because he asked if a crying child was alright, a court was told yesterday.

Alan Smith, 63, was stabbed at least five times as he sat with his partner, daughter and son-in-law in a cafe in east London.

His alleged killer, Matthew Quesada, became enraged when Mr Smith approached him in the BB Cafe to ask if his young daughter, who was crying, was okay, the jury heard.

Quesada responded ‘What’s it to you? What’s it got to f****** do with you?’ before storming out of the cafe.

‘Humiliated and angered’ by what happened and ‘bent on exacting revenge’ Quesada, then aged 25, ran to his girlfriend’s home to drop off the girl and grab a weapon.

With a knife concealed up his sleeve,He then raced after the family as they entered a second diner – the Roma cafe – where they had gone to eat to avoid any further trouble.

It was there that Quesada allegedly launched a ‘frenzied and wordless’ attack, stabbing Mr Smith in the head and body.

As Estelle Jenkins tried to get between her father and his attacker, Mr Smith struggled up from the bolted down table before falling to the floor where he kicked out in a vain attempt to stop the onslaught, the court heard.

Quesada only fled when the victim’s son-in law Mark Jenkins threw a chair at him, halting the attack, as Mr Smith’s horrified partner Denise Facey looked on, the court was told.

As Mr Smith’s life ebbed away an air ambulance doctor had to perform emergency heart surgery on a cafe table that formed a ‘make-shift operating table.’

He was flown to hospital where he died from his wounds, three of which were fatal.

Quesada, now 26, denies murdering Mr Smith on March 26 last year.

Roger Smart, prosecuting, told the Old Bailey jury Quesada accepts he stabbed Mr Smith and the issue will be his state of mind at the time.

The court heard in the lead up to the alleged murder, Mr Smith was waiting for his family to arrive at the BB Cafe in London’s Leyton when Quesada entered with his crying daughter.

After a few minutes when the crying did not subside and while Quesada washed his daughter’s hands in the sink, Mr Smith approached to ask if everything was alright with the little girl, it was claimed.

However, the father-of-two reacted angrily and tried to push past a waiter to get into the kitchen but was blocked,

He then tried to use the cafe’s phone, but stormed off with his daughter after he wasn’t allowed.

The Old Bailey heard that as Quesada went next door to borrow a phone Mr Smith’s family arrived.

As Mr Smith told them they would eat elsewhere, Quesada was overheard saying ‘I need the piece’ over the phone as he stood glaring as Mr Smith and his family left the cafe.

As they walked off Quesada shouted out: ‘You see. You? I’ll see you.’

Mr Smart said: ‘A warning. A man in an aggressive state. A man humiliated, angered by what had happened inside the BB Cafe, bent on exacting revenge.’

The time between the call and the murder was just four minutes, it was said.

Minutes later he was seen running after Mr Smith and his family as they entered the Roma Cafe on the Lea Bridge Road where they had gone to eat instead.

Mr Smart said: ‘He entered only a minute or so after the deceased and his family had sat down in the cafe and approached the table at which they were all sitting.

‘Mark Jenkins was facing the door to the cafe and noticed Quesada when he approached their table. Mr Jenkins saw that the defendant had hidden a knife inside the cuff of his sleeve.

‘As he got to their table, the defendant leaned across and without uttering a word, lunged at Mr Smith.

‘The defendant attacked Mr Smith in a frenzied knife attack, making a plunging motion and hitting the deceased’s head and body.

‘At this point Mr Jenkins jumped up and stepped away from the table. The defendant repeatedly lunged at Mr Smith across the table hitting him at least five to six times.

‘Mr Smith tried to get out from the bolted down table. He managed to get to his feet and his daughter Estelle Jenkins tried to get between her father and the defendant.

‘Mr Smith fell to the floor and kicked out at Quesada, trying in vain to protect himself from the attack.’

Warded off by Mr Jenkins, Quesada was spotted jumping over the back gardens from his girlfriend’s flat before getting into a waiting car and speeding off.

A day later Quesada who had shaven off his distinct Afro style hair and changed his clothes was arrested along with his mother Victoria Passley-Quesada inside her car in south London.

He had on him his British passport, flight details for that day’s flights to Sao Paulo in Brazil, along with a holdall.

His mother Passley-Quesada, 54, of Purley, Surrey, is accused of hiding him from the police, looking up flights, and helping him in his bid to escape.

His girlfriend Maria Brigette, 26, of Hibbard Road, Leyton, east London, is accused of updating him on the police investigation. Both deny assisting an offender.

The trial, expected to last three weeks, continues.
