This year seems like last year, kind of, as far as there not being any type of clear front-runner for the most hallowed of skateboard awards that is not distributed in buckets by the Maloof brothers. There’s no Daewon or Danny Way or Arto Saari no-brainer, and while there are several semi-brainers (useful for commentors such as myself), the politics and squishy qualifications and completely opaque voting process makes it all the more interesting and fun to pointlessly speculate. And so we jump in.

Leo Romero: I kind of feel like if that Skateboarder cover had been a Thrasher we wouldn’t even be bloviating on this, but the uphill path of the inscrutable Leonard is part of his appeal – jumping ship from Baker to Toy Machine years after several former bloodsuckers headed headed the owner way and left Ed & co. with their hands in their pockets, alongside a general negative attitude that many have compared to Emerican elder Heath Kirchart. Leo has a potentially ground-shifting video part in store with “Stay Gold,” and while it will not drop this year, Phelps and his buddies have been known to move pre-emptively, and who doesn’t like to look smart?

Heath Kirchart: The buzz is that the Thrasher camp may not have enough love for the brooding bro with the red-carpet disses and vending machine business, but I don’t know. It’s not like the dude goes around handing out cookie bouquets to the other mags, and to a certain degree you could imagine the Thrasher powers that be digging a devil-may-care mode of operation. It would sorta be a safer pick too, since Heath K brought a show-stopper video part in 09 and potentially another one next year. Cons, he hasn’t done much for Thrasher and he skated to Morrissey.

Sean Malto: The teen heartthrob who lives his own reality show, baffling security guards with nollie frontside feeble grinds and shredding the Pacific Northwest with Julien Stranger. Green but his Thrasher cover was among the year’s gnarliest and the non-stop skateboard mission seems to always have room for a stop or shoutout to his beloved Kansas City; a pro model shoe is not far off and he’s had enough footage drizzled out here and there to mold a passable follow-up to “And Now,” but Malto’s 09 slow burn has yet to fully flare, and I’m not sure the cover, rowdy as it is, would get him over.

Dennis Busenitz: The current Slap Board messiah would seem to have SOTY at long last sewn up, with an internet-smashing video part, talked-about contest runs, many good photos and a pro shoe to boot.* He’s a Nor-Cal gnarler who can schralp transition and/or spit out switch 360 flips, he’s with the right companies. If there’s a downside I guess it’s the lack of any super-handrail heroism or mega-ramp fireworks or some type of singularly groundbreaking trick, but then again, maybe that plays to his advantage. In ten years a Busenitz SOTY win would probably come to be seen along the same lines as Chris Senn, which is to say those who know would know, the rest would be wondering “why not P-Rod” and there’d be a certain amount of “you had to be there”

Lizard King Mike Plumb: Let’s put him on the list. The zaniest Wallenberger with a stupider tattoo/carving every month, and he’s a decent interview. Kind of a long shot maybe but one could argue he’s fairly representative of where skating is these days, which is to say, both trick- and movement-wise.

Anthony Van Engelen: The odds might be stacked against him but to my mind the case has never been stronger for an AVESOTY and the brow-furrowing AWS decks it would probably produce. He has a couple magazine covers, a blazing video part, a harrowing comeback story, a bunch of tattoos and he wears Vans. As one who birthed the current fascination with speed and successfully fused hesh grime with precision tech skating he’s for sure a contender from the career standpoint and probably a SOTY everybody could agree with on some level.

Torey Pudwill: Just throwing it out there, Jake Phelps knows who he is and he’s given it to fresh-faced pros before. But, the lack of follow-through on the Wallenberg nollie flip might cost him precious support in the Yay area.

Zered Basset: the King of Zoo York coulda won it the year he made the “Vicious Cycle” part as far as we’re concerned but he nearly hit that mark again in the “State of Mind” video (still thinking the MOP was totally brilliant) and he has been on the Thrasher radar for some time. The drawback might be that he’s been kind of below the radar compared to some of the charge-happy spotlight grabbers like teammate Brandon Westgate, but an elder statesman might be the one to usher the tradition into the next decade.

It seems like there should be some kinda transition dude in here so, I don’t know, Lance Mountain. Insane as Bob’s mega-ramping has been, our view is that he’s a little bit too TWS/Fuel TV these days for Thrasher’s taste. While on the topic it seems like Justin Brock has whatever “rookie of the year” awards wrapped, unless Grant Taylor gets em.

I’ve always thought there was something vaguely sinister about dinner-time gossipfest, Loose Women. I had put this down to a general uneasiness at listening to endless conversations about how to enjoy sex after the age of 50. But I was wrong.

A recording of an episode was sent to the Sherby57 Laboratory Undertaking Televisual Science (SLUTS for short) for in depth analysis. Initial tests proved inconclusive, but SLUTS scientists persevered and a breakthrough finally came.

Apparently there was a second transmission embedded in the main Loose Women programme that was only subliminally accessible to the human mind. This second transmission contained shocking information. In it, an approximately 12-feet high lizard-man sat on an ornate gilded throne, wearing an elaborate crown and holding, what can only be described as, a metre long wooden cock. Around his feet lay two human slave girls, chained and dressed in bikinis, wearing Bill Clinton rubber face masks over their heads.

The lizard king sat majestically silent for fifteen minutes before repeating the word ‘beetroot’ for 10 minutes. Upon conclusion of this utterance he stood up and began to do the hand jive, very slowly, and with great intent.

What does this all mean? I’ve absolutely no idea to be honest. It’s simply a start to find this out, the explanation will come later. All I know is that I couldn’t live without SLUTS.

A suspect quesadilla prompted a longer-than-anticipated sit-down this afternoon, in which an errant copy of “Outside” magazine was flipped through, uncovering a pretty in-depth profile on hemp farmer and Mega Ramp LLC co-owner Bob Burnquist who is described at one point as “prone to stoner speechifying about ‘fluidic rhythms.’” (Aren’t we all.) It’s a pretty by-the-numbers rundown of the Bob’s life and times as an X-Games superhero, multiple family man and amateur pilot but at one point they’re cooling out at the rancho and things take a turn for the surreal* when a certain Utahn comes scritch-scritch-scratching at his rancho door:

While I’m at the rancho, Bob’s friend and fellow pro Pierre-Luc Gagnon, or PLG, pops by with some fresh meat: a street skater known as Lizard King (Mike Plumb to his relatives), who’s wiry and abundantly tattooed, with a rapsy smoker’s voice and the bug eyes of a man who gets amped for a living.

Minutes later, Lizard King comes back looking as if he’s seen a ghost. He can’t stop pacing. “I’m not even over there looking at it and I’m having a heart attack,” he says.

Bob plays the confident older brother, goosing the Lizard up, onto and eventually down the mega-slope.

Lizard King snatches a bag of pads from PLG’s Mercedes and comes back. “I’ve never been more intimidated by anything in my entire life,” he says, then exhales deeply.

“I wanna get you psyched,” Bob says. “I’ll go out there with you.”

Bob shows Plumb how to bail the jump and then does it sans pads.

Lizard King practically collapses. Here he is, terrified, and Bob has casually dropped in as if this were a backyard pool, wearing nothing but jeans and a T-shirt.

About an hour later, Bob’s phone buzzes. It’s a text from PLG: Lizard nailed it. “He’s got the right mentality,” Bob says. “Or the wrong one, depending how you look at it.”

Elsewhere there’s something of an “Xtremely Sorry” preview, which Bob Burnquist is apparently obsessing over “because (video parts) maintain his credibility in the skate world, which might otherwise regard him as a stunt guy who cashes in at the X Games once a year and then retreats to his ranch to roll around in flaxseed.”

In one sequence, he launches across the 50-foot gap, lands on the manual pad, kickflips his board 180 degrees while going 50 miles per hour, then drops in toward the quarterpipe – all without breaking rhythm.

So, what… manual backside flip? Frontside flip? Or just a “180 flip” into the landing from the manual pad? Meanwhile Bob’s organic restaurant has closed its doors, FYI.

*At least, surreal for those of us for whom Lizard King and “Outside” magazine exist in separate, non-overlapping worlds

It’s a wrap

Though it may not feel like it across most of the country, these allegedly are the dog days of the summer season, and the numerous and powerful corporate interests behind Boil the Ocean hope that you are enjoying them as such. With the high-contrast blare of “Debacle” faded a bit, the super-ams of Powell and Sk8Mafia entertaining new endorsement offers, Zoo York counting its Gatorade incentive cash (nice catch by YWS) and the Blind team again scattered to the four winds, we find ourselves in a lull before the next round of powerhouse productions from the likes of TWS, Zero, Flip and Emerica. Putting the pain of the Duffel/Howard BATB game out of mind, now is the season of bro-dom, in which we all ought to be out enjoying the summer weather* in the manner of your own choosing – skateboarding, shooting the breeze, learning tricks, taking slams and so on.

Video-wise, this heartfelt sentiment is best captured by the bro-love section of the Baker-Deathwish tour video documenting, ah, last summer – if you have the DVD it begins around the 26:19 mark. Antwuan Dixon demonstrates that beneath a fearsome façade of face tattoos and battle-ready knuckles there lurks a helpful domesticate who just wants to see his drug-addled buddies sleep comfortably. There’s mother-and-child-reunion high-fives, haircut goofs and a round of match-the-trick before Mike “Jim Morrison” Plumb gets another helping hand from Slash in achieving a world record grind. It gets no better, bros.

*Note, if you’re reading this from the southern hemisphere where it’s winter currently, get a real hemisphere

The Dew tour dropped Cleveland as a stop this year but the Alli people added the Maloof Money Cup as a tour of its own.
The Maloof Money Cup was last weekend but it is scheduled to air on TV today on NBC sports from 2-3pm.

Just days after Michael Jackson died, rumors are flooding the Internet that he faked his own death. No way, I don’t believe it; but it seems that Michael Jackson is still alive and hiding with Elvis in North Dakota. This rumor sent millions of fans visiting websites to look at insane conspiracy theories that the singer is still alive. I think that Jim Morrison, Elvis and Michael are hiding at Jimmy Hendricks’s house but that’s just me. Just a side note for you Rock Star wannabees, don’t take sedatives with opiates. Kills you every time.

This is a strange thought… Of the three; Michael, Jim, and Elvis; Michael is the only one who was willing to do anything to stay in the spotlight.  For example, buying the elephant mans bones, having a chimp as a pet, wearing a surgical mask.  So, is it possible he’s still alive? YES. Is it probable? Well, about as probable as me having penis reduction surgery…

Another rumor says the singer has been planning this for sometime and is now in hiding in eastern Europe as a vampire. “There is a whole shitload of proof!“, reports a Bi-polar housewife in Queens, NY.

Another site has released a photo it claims is of Jackson, insisting that the man who died on Thursday was the singer’s body double with a terminal aversion to surgery, whose family now, will be eliminated.  Another source said, “ the pictures are actually a Thai transvestite named Puffy-Butt living in Los Angeles. I for one don’t believe this, no one is named “Puffy-Butt.”

If  Michael is still alive, and keeping up with his recent resurgence in popularity he may decide to Kill himself to maintain it, wouldn’t that be a true tragedy.

“Soon, Michael’s new music will be out. Under a different name… Puffy-Butt, perhaps… and “with a drastically altered face” claims a salesman in Juneau…(what’s new about that ?…) and with the introduction of Testosterone therapy he’ll sing as a true tenor instead of  his usual soprano. Remember, these are just rumors and, this in no way endorses the use of steroids, (like my last article), or drugs.  You’ll be sent for prison for it.  Drugs are Bad!

All three in their time were megastars, the likes of which the world has never seen. All three were the leading front man; not just singers but complete performers. All three change the world permanently, the world of music that is. This, in turn, changed culture whether we liked them or not. I am not a big fan of the lifestyles of these “Kings,” I only wanted to watch them perform and not look into their weird and repugnant personal lives.  There are two things which caused the ridiculousness of these stars to be exposed. First, the public’s obsession with these larger then life megastars and second, the scummy profiteering of their weaknesses. There seems to be two types of people with regards to these stars, ones who worshiped them and the ones who were joyous at their destruction. (And a small group who didn’t have an opinion)

Why did they destroy themselves or allowed others to help them do the job?  The answer is simple.  They were, from the beginning, crazy.  And they were emotionally unstable. The instability gave them the ability to express emotions more genuinely then their peers. This emotionality and talent separated them from the rest; it also made them fearless and reckless to a fault. In the end, almost all great entertainers go down in clouds of flaming indignity, their image permanently destroyed by their own crazy unstable talent. “Shine On you Crazy Diamond.” We’ll miss the show.

BATB2 Bracket

I’m going to explain my picks for the battle at the berrics for each game of skate.

Left Hand Bracket 1st Round

Chris Cole v. Mike V = Chris Cole. I’m picking Chris Cole for the fact that he won the 07 eS game of skate (the previous battle winner, mike mo, didn’t fair well) and the fact that Mike V won’t have use of his hands.

Jamie Thomas v. Dennis Busenitz = Jamie Thomas. In the 1st battle at the berrics he was apart of Chris Robert’s legion of doom. During one of the tricks, he is told to do it and that he can and Jamie replies “I’ve done two in my life”, and then makes it. He also is nicknamed “The Chief”, you don’t come by a title like that easily.

Lizard King v. Heath Kirchart = Heath Kirchart. Lizard doesn’t seem like the type to care too much for competition and Heath has been killin it for a minute. He also rides for Alien Workshop which just so happens to be in Dayton. I’m just saying…

Corey Duffel v. Rick Howard = Corey Duffel. I’m picking Corey to win this because he has been getting a fair share of coverage over the past couple of years and has a spot in the next transworld video and seems to be working towards a great part. I haven’t seen it yet, the link says it premiered this past weekend.

Chris Haslam v. Nick Dompierre David Gonzalez= Chris Haslam. Nick has also been getting good coverage but Cheese and Crackers is still in the back of my mind…

Torey Pudwill v. Jimmy Carlin = Jimmy Carlin. He might not be too familiar of a name but has Blackbox ever thrown us a dud?

Josiah Gatlyn v. Cairo Foster = Josiah Gatlyn. He’s got a cosign from the berrics, plus I don’t think he is pro yet so that might give him a little extra hunger.

Guy Mariano v. Cesar Fernandez = Guy Mariano. This was a tough one to pick but I will have to give it to Guy because he has been around for a minute and his part in Fully Flared was one of my favorites. Cesar might get him though.

Right Hand Bracket 1st Round

Cory Kennedy v. Josh Kalis = Cory Kennedy. He is another with the berrics cosign and is coming up. Josh Kalis shouldn’t be slept on though.

Lucas Puig v. Greg Lutzka = Greg Lutzka. The guy is a competition veteran. Plus, he won’t have to be distracted by Reda insulting his homeland.

Stefan Janoski v. Peter Ramondetta = Stefan Janoski. He skates switch better than most people skate in their dreams. I’m sure he will also be comfortable in his new pro shoe.

Mark Appleyard v. Ben Gore = Mark Appleyard. All of the coverage I have seen from Mark lately is a variety of tricks I have a limited comprehension of. Ben Gore is sponsored by Stereo, who is sponsoring the event, he might have a little more to live up to.

Paul Rodriguez v. Kelly Hart = Kelly Hart. Former eS skater P-Rod against present eS skater Kelly Hart… Paul is a vet but Kelly Hart has a mean set of tricks, don’t count him out.

Gilbert Crockett v. Kerry Getz = Kerry Getz. Gilbert is an up and comer from Blackbox but Kerry Getz has been holding it down for years over at Habitat (sibling company of AWS). And, his video parts aren’t too shabby.

Nick Trapasso v. Silas Baxter-Neal Danny Garcia = Silas. Coming seemingly out of nowhere and picking up Habitat and eS as sponsors, Silas is looking like a competitor. He also won Thrasher’s SOTY in 08. Nick isn’t a lame duck though, it will definitely be a good game.

Jerry Hsu v. Raymond Molinar Kenny Anderson= Raymond Molinar. His part in inhabitants was pretty strong.

Left Hand Bracket 2nd Round

Chris Cole v. Jamie Thomas = Chris Cole. This was a tough one to pick, Chris Cole is a game of skate champion and Jamie is a self-made mogul and still puts out video parts that make you jealous. Jamie did fine craft Chris Cole, so he may become Dr. Frankenstein and wish he never did.

Heath Kirchart v. Corey Duffel = Corey Duffel. This was another tough one, I’m picking Corey because he should be in good skating shape from all the filming for transworld. Heath is still a beast so don’t take him lightly

Chris Haslam v. Jimmy Carlin = Chris Haslam. Watch…

Josiah Gatlyn v. Guy Mariano = Guy Mariano. I originally has Josiah as the winner but I feel like Guy could pull a few tricks out of his sleeve that can leave this new guys in the dust. I could be wrong.

Cory Kennedy v. Greg Lutzka = Greg Lutzka. Have you watched this guy compete on tv?

Stefan Janoski v. Mark Appleyard = Mark Appleyard. This is the one that has taken me the longest to decide so far. Stefan can move both ways effortlessly and Mark can lay down bangers with ease. It’s a tough call but only the real game can decide.

Kelly Hart v. Kerry Getz = Kelly Hart. I have seen video of him putting down double flips as easy as I’ve seen Getz do them.

Silas Baxter-Neal v. Raymond Molinar = Silas. He was named SOTY…

Chris Cole v. Chris Haslam = Chris Cole. The guy has won plenty of competitions against heavy contenders, this is no different. Who could really predict anyways?
