un’altra partita di basilea che si è svolta è stata Ljubicic contro Wawrinka che è finita 7-6 3-6 4-6.

You know it is the end of the season when you are not getting nervous about matches anymore. Federer has cruised through his first two rounds in Basel, swiftly beating Seppi 3 and 3 today. That man gets the worst draws. Wawrinka overcame Ljubicic in a tough three setter, and is due to meet Marin Cilic next. Cilic has an outsider’s chance to get to the WTFs. He has to win Basel though. A field with both Roger and Novak. Mmm. Good luck with that one.

Tsonga retired against Youzhny this morning in Valencia. I guess this makes his WTF chances basically nil. Monfils also lost to Garcia-Lopez (embaressing). Verdaso cruised and Simon beat my man Berdych in three sets.

Over in Bali, the pretty Sabine Lisicki lost to Rezai. Wickmayer, Stosur, and Bartoli all won.

Can you just sense my enthusiasm for these end of year tournaments through my blogging? Yeah, though so. The men really should be playing the WTFs right now. Season. Too. Long.

Even Roger’s shirt is boring. Geez.

Speaking of shirts… Mandy Murray is ditching Fred Perry for adidas. Cannot WAIT to see what colourful creations they pop on him. Mandy in orange? Mandy in blue? Mandy in lime green? Very excited.

Nole is still rumoured to be going to K-Swiss (bad bad bad move).

Dinara è la diciannovesima n.1 del tennis femminile, ma anche la prima a condividere il primato con il fratello Marat. Al quale non concede meriti per la sua ascesa, che sostiene essere tutti di Krajan, il tecnico che le ha presentato Ljubicic. Ma al fratello amato, Dinara da un consiglio “Ora che ci sono io, puoi ritirarti”

“Devo offrire la cena a Ljubicic ma ancora non ci sono riuscita. Spero in uno dei prossimi tornei”. Questo è il modo con cui Dinara Safina vuole ringraziare chi ,indirettamente, l’ha aiutata a diventare la nuova numero uno del tennis femminile.
La diciannovesima di una serie cominciata il 3 novembre 1975 con Chris Evert.
Infatti è stato il croato Ljubicic ad aver messo in contatto la russa con Zeljko Krajan suo attuale coach. L’artefice della trasformazione di Dinara da eterna sorellina di Marat a Dinara top player. Da aprile a settembre 2008 è stata la giocatrice più ‘calda’ del circuito, vincendo 3 tornei (Berlino, Los Angeles e Montreal), arrivando in finale a Roland Garros e alle Olimpiadi ed in semifinale agli US Open. Inizia il 2008 con n.15 e finisce da n.2. E scusate se è poco. Tutto questo grazie sia a Krajan (“Lui ha sempre creduto che potevo farcela e se uno te lo ripete tutti i giorni, poi alla fine ci credi anche tu”), sia al preparatore atletico Dejan Vojnovic. “Ora sono più veloce e resistente. Ho perso peso e questo mi ha aiutato tantissimo. Prova a metterti addosso una cintura da 10 chili e a giocare. Poi capisci che differenza fa”. Dinara si allena ogni giorno per 6 ore, 4 di tennis e 2 di preparazione atletica. Più 5 ore a settimana in palestra.

La Famiglia Safin

Numero uno lui (il 20 novembre 2000), numero uno lei (a partire da lunedi 20 aprile) E’ la prima volta che accade…Per di più, Dinara è sempre stata considerata la sorellina che si muove nell’ombra di Marat. Non c’è volta che si parli di lei senza nominare il suo amato fratello. Figura ingombrante dal punto di vista tennistico “Ho sempre cercato di diventare qualcuno solo per me stessa. Quando ero più piccola mi sentivo addosso la pressione di dover far bene. Lui giocava alla grande mentre io non riuscivo ad ottenere dei buoni risultati. Non ho il suo talento, a lui viene tutto facile. Mi diceva: ma perché ti alleni così tanto? Perché non posso fare quello che fai tu. Sì, mi mettevo molta pressione addosso”. Ma da allora la ventitreenne Dinara è cresciuta e l’indipendenza nelle sue scelte l’ha sottolineata così a chi le chiedeva se qualcuno della famiglia le dava consigli su come giocare… “A nessuno è permesso darmi consigli di tennis. Solo il mio coach può dirmi come devo giocare”, per la serie piccole sorelle crescono… In fatto di personalità la russa non è seconda a nessuna, fu una delle prima a criticare il calendario 2009, durante la Kremilin Cup dello scorso ottobre parlò apertamente di boicottaggio delle giocatrici se non ci fossero stai dei cambiamenti. E qualcosa cambiò. Adesso le 4 semifinaliste di Roma e Tokyo hanno un bye nei tornei di Madrid e Pechino che si giocano subito dopo.

La grinta di Dinara

Anche il suo allenatore sa che è meglio non farla arrabbiare: a Sydney durante la finale (poi persa contro la connazionale Dementieva) chiamò il coach al cambio di campo per dirgli che mentre lei era lì a lottare, lui parlava e scherzava troppo con Vojnovic. “Ogni volta che mi giro vi vedo ridere. Cerca di guardarmi di più”. Le orecchie di Zeljko divennero rosse, lui si scusò e poi scoppiarono insieme a ridere. “La nostra collaborazione funziona perché lui è molto paziente”. Curiosamente, fino a 3 mesi fa, l’etichetta di ‘Numero Uno più debole di sempre’ era stata data alla Jankovic, rea di essere arrivata in cima alla classifica non solo non aver mai vinto uno Slam ma neppure giocato una finale (poi però ha giocato quella agli US Open, persa senza colpo ferire contro Serena Williams). La russa invece di finali ne ha già giocate 2 (a Parigi, battuta dalla Ivanovic e a Melbourne 2009, stracciata da Serena…”Avevo l’impressione di farle da raccattapalle”, disse), ma non basta: secondo i così detti esperti, è lei la più debole n.1 da quando esiste la WTA. Se Dinara Safina avesse avuto il carisma e la bellezza di Marat, ci sarebbero state tutte queste noiose lamentele per aver raggiunto la posizione di n.1? Chissà. Per il momento, oltre all’onore per il risultato raggiunto scherzando (forse) aggiunge “Adesso Marat si può anche ritirare tranquillo”.

Finally we have made it to the players who have deserved to be going into 2nd week. RG is IMO the hardest of the 4 slams to get past the first 3 rounds. There are so many clay lover below top 100 who could take the advantage and get instant fame. Who am I talking about…hmm
Well, there’s Chardy!! That’s the only one who’s left, but there are always a few players who come from nothing and get big wins against big guys.

Let’s go to today’s action and find the man of the day… IVAN LJUBICIC!!!

Why, you say? Firstly he was down 2-0 against the 4th best clay player, the robotic Davydenko. Second, he has fallen down from top 3-4 to #30 very fast and with no good results to show in recent time. Third, he is one of the BIG guys with the big serve as main weapon. History shows that these guys succeed more on hard courts and grass. Fact of the matter is Ljubi played great tennis, few errors and made Davydenko come up with the good stuff. He wasn’t able anymore after the first two sets, and Ivan took over. Great match, great setting and a great result for the big guy from Croatia. Kinda the only surprise left, apart from Chardy in the last 16.

Gonzalez did the same thing today, but you would excpect him to play a lot better than what he showed during the first two sets. Gonzo is a rollercoaster of another dimension and needs stability to get a big title. Wawrinka playing his best is perhaps not as good as Gonzo playing his best. That’s why Gonzo won, I think.

Ok, here’s a breakdown of the remaining candidates:
Federer-Benneteau (Federer just torn Ancic apart, will do it to Benne as well)
Gonzo-Ginepri (is this for real?! If Gonzo loses this, shame on him!)
Ljubicic-Monfils (this could go either way, depending on mental strength+best tennis possible)
Stepanek-Ferrer (probably to of the biggest dark horses to win the entire thing, super match!)
Gulbis-Llodra (big chance for both of them, is Gulbis mature enough to take it? 50-50 IMO)
Mathieu-Djokovic (either Mathieu plays his best and has a chance, or plays poorly and gets humiliated at home)
Chardy-Almagro (bye bye Chardy, Almagro losing this would be a big upset! who knows?)
Verdasco-Nadal (bye bye Verdasco. never beaten him, never even close, except for once on grass..Nadal in 3 I’m afraid)

When you get 1-6, 2-6 against Ljubicic on clay, you really cannot hope to do very good in Roland Garros. The difference was Ljbubicic had firepower and weapons, while Kuerten couldn’t do much. Shame, but when you have your mind and one foot in the retired business, you have pretty much lost it.

Murray got through Lopez in 2, which didn’t sound easy, but Lopez might be one spaniard who probably doesn’t favor a clay court over a faster harder one. I think Volandri will pose a greater threat to Murray in the next round. Kohlschreiber took out Acasuso, Tipsy downed Mathieu in 3, Ancic set up Nadal clash, and Ferrero got Llodra after being in trouble with poor tennis for 1 set.

 Novak Djokovic SRB (3) – Kevin Anderson RSA (122)

I may be the only person to say this but I think a possible upset could be on the cards.  Djokovic will without a doubt not be 100 percent going into this match which gives every chance to the rising star from South Africa. As I say every week winners of tournaments the week before do not have sufficient recovery time and although Djokovic is of a different class to Anderson, fatigue could beat him here. Anderson was runner up in Las Vegas in early March playing seven matches to get there and eventually lost to Sam Querrey in three sets. This shows he has a bit of quality and stamina at the top level. Do not get me wrong, this match is not going to be 61 62 whitewash but Anderson may be able to steal a victory in three sets as Djokovic tires.

 Predicted Winner :: Anderson

 Richard Gasquet FRA (8) – Dmitry Tursunov RUS (35)

The head to head for this year stands at 1-1 and this match could go either way. The stylish Frenchman is one of my favourite players but he can suffer lapses of concentration and go into his shell when losing. Tursunov’s ‘go for broke’ power game is very unique on the tour and you never know quite what your going to get. Some matches he’ll make 100 errors and in others he’ll be unplayable. Both players have not been on the best form as of late and I fancy the well rested Tursunov to blast Gasquet off the court.

 Predicted Winner :: Tursunov

 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG (65) – Feliciano Lopez ESP (33)

I have come across a few people on the internet tipping Del Potro for this match and I think they are very wrong. I agree that Lopez can be unpredictable at times but when he plays well, he is virtually unstoppable. I really feel Lopez can reach a much higher level than Del Potro who actually leads the head to head 2-0. The last time they played was in October 2007  where Lopez was off form and lost in straight sets however he came into his own this year in Dubai where he showed just how good he can be only losing to Roddick in the final.

Predicted winner : Lopez

 Ivan Ljubicic CRO (24) – Fabrice Santoro FRA (49)

 Every match Ljubicic plays now I always think of a quote from a tennis commentator: “The Ljubicic star had faded.” He won a couple of matches last week against Cilic and Robredo but lost easily to Federer who was clearly not 100 percent. The pair played at this tournament last year when Ljubicic, ranked 7 prevailed in three sets. A year on and Ljubicic is not the player he was and I can see the tricky Frenchman who caused Djokovic a bit of trouble in Dubai chopping his way to victory here.
