The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other

The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more careful, prepared, and aware during the holiday season, or any season for that matter! Lloyd Pro Group wants to help keep your holidays joyous.

-When returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and be ready to unlock the door and enter as quickly as possible. As you approach your vehicle, scan the area, glance underneath the vehicle, and take a quick look inside before entering.

-While out and about, present an alert appearance!
Be aware of your surroundings; scan the area from time to time. Avoid concentrating so hard on shopping that you fail to keep track of your surroundings, others near you, or your personal property.

-Wear conservative, comfortable clothing.

-Grip carried items firmly and avoid leaving them unattended.

-Carry minimal cash and valuables, wear minimal jewelry.

-Shop with friends or relatives if possible; there IS safety in numbers. As you shop, be alert in crowded places. Among pickpockets’ favorites are revolving doors, jammed aisles, elevators, and public transportation stops and vehicles, especially at rush hour. Carry the day’s most expensive purchases closest to your body, and don’t carry so much you lose the ability to react quickly.

-If possible, leave your children with a baby-sitter while you are shopping. For holiday shopping, consider making arrangements with family or friends/neighbors, and take turns baby-sitting. If you take your children with you, keep a close eye on them while shopping.

-Teach your children to go to a store clerk or security guard if they ever get separated from you in a store/mall, and be sure they know their first and last name so they can tell someone who they are. It’s best to keep children under four (4) in a stroller. Children in shopping carts should be properly belted and seated in the child carrier area at all times —never let your child stand in or push a shopping cart.

-Return to your vehicle periodically to check on it and reduce the amount you are carrying and must keep track of. Store packages in the trunk or, if your vehicle doesn’t have one, out of plain view (on the floorboard, under a blanket or clothes, etc). When possible, have purchases delivered instead of taking them with you; many businesses offer free delivery during the holiday shopping season. Ask for an escort to your car if you feel nervous.

-Return to the mall or store for assistance if you spot suspicious activity near your vehicle. Stay alert while loading items into or out of the vehicle or arranging cargo stowage. If someone approaches, and you feel threatened, get in and lock up until they leave the area; if they loiter, drive away.

-Using debit or credit cards is much safer than carrying a lot of cash. If the vendors you will visit don’t take cards, consider obtaining traveler’s checks which, unlike cash, can be replaced if lost or stolen. Visit ATM’s only at well-lighted and populated locations; visit during daylight hours if possible.

-Using the drive-up is usually safer than walking up or into a banking facility. Remember to scan around you as you make your withdrawal. Many ATMs now have “fisheye” mirrors mounted above the keyboard to enable you to view the entire surrounding area while conducting business; try to patronize ATMs so-equipped, and use the mirror!

-If anyone is loitering, or you don’t like their looks, go to another ATM. Stand such that those behind you cannot see your PIN as you enter it; your PIN should NEVER be written down on or carried with your ATM card.

-Be observant. Avoid dark areas, short-cuts, cul-de-sacs, and suspicious persons. Stay near light and people.

-Be prepared to flee potential problems. If apprehensive about any location for any reason, leave. Consider carrying a whistle. Weapons are not recommended, and may be unlawful.

Happy Shopping!

Earlier this week Oliver Marks wrote an excellent post on his Collaboration 2.0 Blog: ‘The Purpose of a Business is to Create a Customer’ – Peter Drucker Centenary. Oliver celebrates the Nov 19, 2009 Centenary of Peter Drucker’s birth with two of his favorite Drucker bumper sticker quotes: ” ‘Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes‘ and ‘There is an enormous number of managers who have retired on the job‘, which somehow seem to fit together very well.” then uses these quotes as context to discuss the disturbing findings of the 2009 Shift Index report and followup analysis by John Hagel, John Seely Brown and Lang Davidson of the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation. Please read Oliver’s full post – you’ll like it. Oliver was also used kind words to build on my earlier Enterprise 2.0 Schism post. Here’s a slightly extended version of the comment I posted in reply, along with my two favorite Drucker bumper sticker quotes and several links to celebrate Drucker’s birth and life.

Thank you for the kind words and for pointing out the HBR Drucker Centenary issue. My “Enterprise 2.0 Schism” post was fun to write – with tongue firmly in cheek – as you note. But it also expresses some serious beliefs.

For me the key Drucker quote is: “The purpose of an organization is to enable ordinary humans beings to do extraordinary things.”

The scale shift that ubiquitous Web tech enables as well as bottom up participation in E2.0 initiatives are both necessary – but neither are sufficient to distinguish “Enterprise 2.0″ from the Web we see and use every day outside work. I believe the difference lies in the shared purpose which drives people to create or join an enterprise and work together over time, along with the need to manage use of scarce resources to a shared end.

By definition an enterprise is a purposeful undertaking that generally requires many hands, expertise and capital that aren’t easy for a non-purposeful group to gain and apply over time. This make the “social ecology” of an enterprise different from other groups.

In saying “2.0 modifies how the Enterprise works, not the technology,” I take the rhetorical position that the technology which underlies E2.0 – specifically the ubiquitous Web as a platform – is a necessary enabler which provides the first chance to practically apply many of the principals of open work, distributed work and effective collaboration over time that Drucker and Engelbart have advocated for the past fifty years.

I believe that emergent phenomena which Prof Andrew McAfee includes as a core part of his definition of Enterprise 2.0 are significant and different in kind and structure from anything seen before in any enterprise – based on the speed, scale, simplicity and ubiquity of the technology combined with expectations and experience grounded in the public Web. Speculating on how management could embrace but not squash these phenomena to “create more customers” is a good Druckerian question.

But I also believe that the most likely path to large scale adoption and use of this enabling technology will come from small to mid size groups within an organization who intentionally use it to improve their own ability to get work done – rather than in direct pursuit of emergent benefits. They can (and by mandate should) open the direct and indirect record of their work to others who then may become better aware of what their enterprise plans to do, is doing or has done – and who knows what. I really like Jon Udell’s term for this principal: Observable Work.

I believe this bottom up and pragmatic adoption model parallels lessons learned from bottom up Knowledge Management versus the failure of top down KM, and lessons learned from the history of the simple, practical Web itself versus failed dreams of more sophisticated universal hypertextuality.

The benefits that are new in kind are emergent, but the path to broad adoption and acceptance will be based on mutual consent, compelling benefits to those who do the work, leadership, and experimentation in activities that have a clear business purpose – designing, building, selling, maintaining products, providing services to clients, customers and partners.

It’s presumptuous to guess what Peter Drucker would say about the relationship between the technology, techniques and phenomena we call Enterprise 2.0 and its potential to change the patterns of work and management of an enterprise.

But I believe it’s fair to ask: “What sort of hard questions might Peter Drucker ask?” David Rendall (of the UK’s National Health Service, Orkney) tossed a nice Druckerian question to Carmen Medina during the followup discussion to her Enterprise 2.0 and the Context of Work keynote at TUG 2009 last month:

#tug2009 Question for Carmen: how do those collaborative networks balance with clear lines of responsibility e.g. in healthcare? 10:06 AM Oct 14th from TweetDeck @davidrendall

For example, the decision on course of treatment for a particular patient is yes or no and may be life and death. You want many people to be able to contribute to that decision – including the patient – but ultimately someone has to accept responsibility for that outcome. In all enterprises decisions between mutually exclusive courses of action need to be made – up to and including “bet the company” decisions.

See the video (time 68:20) for David’s question. Then follow Carmen’s response and a fascinating discussion that includes FAA experience in understanding and mandating training on cockpit resource management to make air crews aware of how to communicate effectively in high stress situations. Planes have literally flown into mountains when a junior officer was not willing or able to alert a senior pilot to a critical issue while the senior pilot was dealing with the same or an unrelated emergency.

Drucker would hold management ultimately responsibility for the course of action and outcome. But how to make best use of the experience and judgement of a distributed, experienced and self-directed organization is not a simple question, particularly in a crisis such as the mortgage credit crisis (or South Sea Bubble) where madness rather than wisdom of crowds is part of the problem. In my opinion Drucker was often at his best when expressing and defending contrarian opinions that he considered morally right as well as intellectually correct. See Schumpeter Keynes which Drucker wrote on the Keynes Centenary.

Drucker makes the point that innovation in how an enterprise (profit or non-profit) works – how it provides motivation, support, leadership and resources to its members to “Create a Customer” – is as important as innovation in whatever else an enterprise delivers.

I hope we’ll see more good work (like John Hagel & John Seely Brown’s The Only Sustainable Edge) that focuses on E2.0 style business innovation based on Drucker’s understanding of what drives success.

PS – My second Peter Drucker bumper sticker quote for the day: “A manager’s task is to make the strengths of people effective and their weakness irrelevant–and that applies fully as much to the manager’s boss as it applies to the manager’s subordinates.”

The fact that so many people enjoy debating definitions, values, doctrinal principals – even the existence of Enterprise 2.0 – makes me think that E2.0 might best be framed as a religious debate. Without the enabling technology of the Web, plus search engines and other affordances based on Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s innovation, the Strict Proletarian would find it difficult to fit the inhabitants of McAfee’s inner, middle and outer rings into the same room, get them to participate in the same conference call, or exhibit their “emergent” behaviors using typewriters, copy machines, faxes and email. Speed, scale and connection patterns matter and the technology that spans these barriers is neither trivial nor insignificant to the phenomena Strict Proletarians value.

I believe that although both technology and broad bottom-up participation are necessary to achieve the Drukerian vision, neither element alone is sufficient to achieve the noble end of re-engineering how ordinary people work together to achieve the ends of enterprises they choose to affiliate with.

I nominate Peter Drucker and Douglas Engelbart as Patron Saints of Enterprise 2.0 (Strict Druckerian). If you don’t know who either of these gentlemen are, I suggest you click their Wikipedia links for two pretty good short biographies.

Peter Drucker constantly advised businesses to give employees direct control over their own work and environment, with teams of “knowledge workers” responsible for work toward goals stated as broad business objectives rather than prescriptive plans. Drucker stated that management could only achieve sustainable profits by treating people as an enterprise’s most valued resources, not as costs. In later years he described his role as “social ecologist” rather than management consultant.

“Marketing alone does not make a business enterprise. In a static economy there are no business enterprises. There are not even businesspeople. The middleman of a static society is a broker who receives his compensation in the form of a fee, or a spectator who creates no value.

A business enterprise can exist only in an expanding economy, or at least in one that considers change both natural and acceptable. And business is the specific organ of growth, expansion and change.

The second function of a business is, therefore innovation – the provision of different economic satisfactions. It is not enough for the business to provide just any economic good and services; it must provide better and more economic ones. It is not necessary for a business to grow bigger; but it is necessary that it constantly grow better…

Above all innovation is not invention. It is a term of economics rather than technology. Non technological innovations – social or economic innovations – are at least as important as technological ones.

In the organization of a business enterprise, innovation can no more be considered a separate function than marketing. It is not confined to engineering or research, but extends across all parts of the business, all functions, all activities.” Peter Drucker, Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices (1974)

At a 1934 Cambridge seminar by John Maynard Keynes, “I suddenly realized that Keynes and all the brilliant economic students in the room were interested in the behavior of commodities, while I was interested in the behavior of people.” Peter Drucker, The Ecological Vision, p. 75-76, (1993)

“A manager’s task is to make the strengths of people effective and their weakness irrelevant–and that applies fully as much to the manager’s boss as it applies to the manager’s subordinates.” Peter Drucker, Managing for the Future: The 1990’s and Beyond (1992)

In an equally distinguished career, Douglas Engelbart has been immensely influential in creating and inspiring the creation of technology we use today (far beyond his invention of the mouse), but Doug’s goals have always been expressed in terms of improving the abilities of groups to address complex, difficult and important problems:

“By ‘augmenting human intellect’ we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble. And by ‘complex situations’ we include the professional problems of diplomats, executives, social scientists, life scientists, physical scientists, attorneys, designers–whether the problem situation exists for twenty minutes or twenty years. We do not speak of isolated clever tricks that help in particular situations. We refer to a way of life in an integrated domain where hunches, cut-and-try, intangibles, and the human ‘feel for a situation’ usefully co-exist with powerful concepts, streamlined terminology and notation, sophisticated methods, and high-powered electronic aids.” Douglas Engelbart Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework, Introduction, (1962)

On the term “social software”, I believe it’s fair to blame it on Clay Shirky – who had the misfortune to introduce a term that’s perfectly respectable for a sociologist who studies how technology influences group behavior:

“It’s software that supports group interaction. I also want to emphasize, although that’s a fairly simple definition, how radical that pattern is. The Internet supports lots of communications patterns, principally point-to-point and two-way, one-to-many outbound, and many-to-many two-way.” − Clay Shirky, A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy O’Reilly Conference (April 2003)

If the term “social” must be deprecated, I hope its banishment takes with it all Social X marketing buzzwords, job titles, twitter tags, and the well-earned disco ball reputations of the so-called Social Media gurus.

On “Return on investment” debates, I believe that Taylorist time-and-motion studies would show gains that typically exceed the modest costs of introducing and using Enterprise 2.0 software, but studies for knowledge work where the value is not transactional (time to process a purchase order) are difficult to design and far too easy to fudge. Large scale experimental studies based on overall business success are even more problematic – except in hindsight.

“A very important surgeon delivered a talk on the large number of successful procedures for vascular reconstruction. At the end of the lecture, a young student at the back of the room timidly asked, ‘Do you have any controls?’ The great man hit the podium and said, ‘Do you mean, “Did I not operate on half the patients?”‘ … The hall grew very quiet and the voice at the back of the room very hesitantly replied, ‘Yes, that’s what I had in mind.’ The surgeon’s fist really came down as he thundered, ‘Of course not, that would have doomed half of them to their death!’…The room was then quiet, and one could scarcely hear the small voice ask, ‘Which half?’” – Dr. E. E. Peacock, Jr., University of Arizona College of Medicine; quoted in Medical World News, p. 45 (September 1, 1972) quoted by Edward Tufte in Beautiful Evidence (2006)

I believe the value of Enterprise 2.0 techniques comes from small to mid size groups within an organization who intentionally (not emergently) improve their own ability to get work done, while opening the direct and indirect record of their work to others who then may become better aware of what their enterprise plans to do, is doing or has done – and who knows what.

Finally – having demonstrated the unerring truth of the Strict Druckerian position regarding the nature of Enterprise 2.0, I declare both the Strict Technarian and Strict Proletarian interpretations to be false, heretical, and anathema. Living in our tolerant and civilized times, I found it difficult to imagine an appropriate way to separate those who obstinately cling to these heretical beliefs, until I ran across this nugget:

Nike does “email archeology” to decompose email thread to expose one part of a specific collaboration. :>) #e2conf @lehawselive (4:20pm Nov 4, 2009)

This was far to much fun to write. I hope I haven’t needlessly offended anyone, but I’m also happy to defend the essence of the Druckerian position in more serious terms; Enterprise 2.0 is a big tent and I hope it stays that way.

I also value the term Enterprise 2.0 for a reason over and above the Druckerian fantasy. Unlike terms invented to express a desire to sell software to managers (X Management – you do want to manage X don’t you?), Enterprise 2.0 expresses a simple, grounded wish:

“I wish the software I used every day at work allowed me to find what I want; discover what I need to know – along with surprises; and connect with people I don’t even know to get my job done, learn more, and work in an enjoyable place.” or much more narrowly: “Why can I find what I need with Google on the Web, but have to pull teeth to find anything useful when I go to work?”

This is a grounded wish since everyone in business has a direct basis for comparison – what they or their children see, use and enjoy on the public Web every day. This doesn’t mean that expectations, behavior, and (uh sociology) of the public Web and the internal/external web of connections used in an enterprise are the same – but they are comparable with respect to desired experience.

To the extent that corporate barriers dash expectations, read Peter Drucker on how to get rid of those barriers or find a better employer.

To the extent that enterprise technology differs with respect to needs for privacy, finding information in a link-deprived environment and sharing access to confidential sources or legacy applications, Enterprise 2.0 offers the opportunity for vendors and community projects to create products that respond to that simple, grounded wish and measure the difference.

Lloyd is the most recent contestant to be voted off of X Factor, I can’t believe that there are only four contestants left! I have to admit that I did enjoy Lloyd’s voice and his stage presence; I think that we will be seeing more of him in the future! With his departure it made me realize how young some of the contestants were on the show. That is only a few years away for my children and I just couldn’t even imagine being in the spotlight like that! I wonder what it must have been like to be discovered at such a young age and how different their lives will be. Must be all the Guitar Hero I played this weekend that made me realize the calibre of talent that the contestants have!

I preferred her when she battered people in dirty Newcastle toilets I watched The X-Factor tonight.

I preferred her when she battered people in dirty Newcastle toilets

I watched The X-Factor tonight. It wasn’t the first time I’ve sat through it, and it probably won’t be the last. But I still came away from it with exactly the same emotion overshadowing all others: frustration.

On this occasion, I did things a little differently and followed the Twitter feed #xfactor while the show was on. This meant that during the broadcast, I could read the opinions of fans or curious viewers in real time. Every minute, hundreds of people who use twitter would tell us their feelings on the show in 140 characters or less at a time. By the time the show had ended, all I could remember from the whole episode was the two performances by actual real singers, and the vote results at the end which knocked out the young Welshy, Lloyd. His mentor Cheryl Cole said it best: “It’s amazing that he got this far,” nicely insinuating that he was crap.

So for a show lasting an hour, all I could recall immediately afterwards was that Alicia Keys played a medley for around 4 minutes, and Rihanna performed an instantly forgettable song for another 4 minutes. I had already almost erased from my memory the X-Factor finalists miming to “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’”, originally performed by Scissor Sisters. Yes, they were miming. It was a brilliantly awful way to begin the show and a clearly dumb attempt to entice viewers. Hell, it wasn’t an attempt at all. I wanted to smack everyone on that stage. Funnily enough, pretty much every single person who was tweeting at the time (mostly all loyal fans, remember) slated the performance too. Apparently the group destroy tracks every Sunday night. So why do people continue to watch it?

The rest of the show was padded out with Dermot O’Leary saying things everybody already knows, adverts, and the obligatory sentimental video package of finalists mumbling something along the lines of, “If I get knocked out tonight, I might actually contract hepatitis. I NEED to stay in this competition – or I might just DIE ON STAGE.”

People who tweeted during the show tended to talk about appearances, such as the state of Rihanna’s hair (“Excuse the French but her hair is a fucking mess!” ), the chemical make-up of Danni Minogue’s breasts (“Dannii’s tits are insane.”), and debates on who or what Stacey most resembles in the facial region (“Is it just me or does Stacey Solomon look like Joe Bugner?”). When it came to the guys on the show, tweets were mainly about how hot (or not) they were. Which is fair enough – there’s little else to talk about.

Still, there’s only two weeks until the final. I tried to get involved and I took the show at face value, but when you look at it there was absolutely nothing there. If I was to become an X-Factor fan, I would treat the first 50 minutes as a rubbish version of Top of the Pops which only has two performances then treat the last 10 minutes as the actual X-Factor results show, much like we get short Lotto results shows. Or I would do what I know some “loyal” fans do - Sky+ the whole thing and skip to the end

I think I was just frustrated at myself for again sitting through a show and getting absolutely nothing out of it at all. Apart from a few new “friends” on Twitter who I’ll never meet and probably delete from my life soon anyway when I find they do nothing apart from tweet about the bloody X-Factor.

yay! Joe did not disappoint. just like normal then, I guess? ahhh i actually love his so much. the world needs more Joe’s.

Hey, I need a joe =D he’s just so perfect. a cute. and his voice just kinda, i don’t know, makes me stop breathing for the whole time he sings.

URGH! Danyl. Fucking hate the guts off of that man. he just pisses me off so much. I hate the way he sings, and, more than that, I just can’t stand the way he is. hes just seems realy pervy and creepy, and on top of that, he needs to get over himself.

And then theirs Olly. Meh. I don’t hate him, but I realy wouldn’t give a bottle of sour milk if he goes. he’s just meh. nothing more to say realy.

Ahhhh Lloyd. I kinda have this love/hate thing going on with him. He’s not bad looking, but theirs better out their, and his singing is OK, but nothing special. I prefer him over Danyl and Olly though, but theirs no reason why.

And then theirs the girl/horse/creature thing, Stacy. I absolutely can’t bear to hear anothing sound come from her face. seriously. please. make her stop. and then, when she talks. wow. thank god theirs never a knife in the room. one thing ive notices is when she says a word, her face doesnt express that word untill AFTER shes said it, its like shes has no idea whats going to come from her mouth and then when she says it her mind is like OH, I SAID SOMETHING!

urgh.

so, can’t wait for next week, Lady GaGa! YAY! C’MON!

Until… Tomorrow (thats for the X Faxtor post anyway, ill probs blog again later) Xx

Takin’ another route today … goin’ urban. Simply put, I’ll post. You listen.

Takin’ another route today … goin’ urban.

Simply put, I’ll post. You listen.

NEW KELIS!!! “Acapella” – Kelis is always opening herself up, musiclaly, to all things. She tries new beats, new chords, new visuals … it’s like a surprise party everytime another single of hers drops.

Keri Hilson – “I Like” – Besides the fact that Keri Hilson is absolutely GORGEOUS, she can sing, too. This song is a different sound for her in that it’s definitely more dance/pop compared to what we’ve been hearing from her, but you know what? It works.

Toni Braxton feat. Trey Songz – “So Yesterday” – I’m on the fence about this one still … maybe it’s one of those that needs to grow on me. I dunno, but I’m posting it anyway because it’s new music by Miss Braxton.

Rihanna feat. Justin Timberlake – “Hole In My Head” – Good track. On a side note: JT is sounding more and more like Timbaland everytime he shows voice these days. Rihanna is totally reminiscent of Nelly Furtado in this one, too. That’s all I wanted to point out. I’m not NOT gonna stop dancing to this one, though.

50 Cent feat. Ne-Yo – “Baby By Me” – oooooooooh Fitty! You so crayzaaaaay!

Dondria – “You’re The One” – If Rihanna’s vocal chords made love to Keri Hilson’s, Dondria’s is what they would sound like.

Janet Jackson – “Make Me” – Janet’s using what her brother taught her and’s totally bringin’ it again. The thing I love about this song is the old school kick!

Rihanna feat. Youg Jeezy – “Hard” – I like this song. I think it’s good and I think Rihanna’s coming out of her “shell” (the emo one) nicely. Some would say slutty, I say … ballsey. She’s trying to make up for her past-self these days … I’m still on the fence about how I feel about her … musically, though, I think she’s well on her new way.

Lloyd feat. J. Holiday and Nikki Minaj – “Take It Off” – Pretty much everything Lloyd has done, I’ve sincerely liked. My favs? “Southside” with Ashanti and “I Want You” (True Remix) feat. Nas and Andre 3000 … but here’s his newest:

Shakira feat. Lil Wayne – “Give It Up To Me” – I’m not a Weezy fan by any means what-so-ever … I AM, however, a big Shakira fan. In a nutshell, this song is HOT.

Robin Thicke – “Sex Therapy” – Ok, Robin Thicke is goooooooood, man. When he first showed face on the music scene and his identity became known, I almost shit my pants. I mean, Alan Thicke’s son? REALLY?! But, the dude can sing and he’s got soul … and it’s good.

Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga – “Videophone” – I. Love. This. Song.

J-Lo “Louboutins” – I’ll tell you why I’m TOTALLY feelin’ this song. The Dream produced it. It’s smooth and not your usual-choppy-J-Lo-flatness that we’re used to with J-Lo. I love J-Lo, don’t get me wrong, but let’s all be honest and face the music: she ain’t a musical artist. BUT, with the right producer, anyone can be an artist. This is like the best and worst thing ever.

New Boyz feat. Ray J. – “Tie Me Down” – aight aight aight … I like this one! I don’t cuuuure what you say … you know you’re gonna groove to it, too.

A short story today. It’s another injury story, because people getting hurt can be funny!

A PA I was working with in Big Bear got hit by a car.

On the day he was hit by a car we were stuck in the worst blizzard Big Bear had seen in seven years trying to dig out the grip trucks so we could start our first day of shooting. We were already over five hours behind, which meant we were already starting to go over budget. At some point something had broke, and at numerous points people had nearly been injured. An event like someone getting hit by a car was bound to happen and, frankly, not the worst thing that happened that day.

Still, getting hit by a car isn’t a great experience.

He and I had been doing the same job since 7am in the morning; running back and forth helping whoever we could. I was getting fifty dollars a day (it was yet another Lloyd movie) to run through the snow in jeans to try and get a generator on a trailer out of a snow ditch and was seriously debating on asking for a raise. We might all have had frost bite, who knows. By 1pm in the afternoon I was soaked, cold, and tired and yet was still running back and forth across a parking lot trying to dig cars out of snow drifts and bring people warm coffee.

Anyone who lives in snow knows how tough getting cars out of the snow and ice can be, especially if the car has been stuck there for a long period of time. Basically, even after clearing away the snow, the car can still be stuck because snow underneath the it has frozen over, fusing the car into the ground. This means that when the car tries to move its tires spin uselessly while nothing happens. The main way to solve this problem is with brute force; a few people shove the car as hard as they can while the tires continue to spin. Eventually the car wins and comes free. Sometimes this action is especially violent, with the car popping free and flying whatever direction the wheels are spinning until the driver stomps on the breaks. This is always unexpected.

The PA was running through the frozen over parking lot when a jeep did just that.

There was a pop, a revving sound, and the jeep flew backward and rammed right into the PA that just happened to be running behind it at that very moment. The back of the jeep is tall and flat, meaning instead of falling under or over the car the PA was simply hit head on. The Driver immediately jammed on the breaks as this happened. The resulting collision caused the PA to fly back over ten feet and tumble end over end on the ground as the car screeched to a halt.

The Driver got out of the car at the same time the PA lifted himself off the ground. “Are you okay?!” the Driver asked, clearly worried for the PA’s health. The PA, in the meantime, was feeling over his body and shaking out his arm which had taken most the blow. He finally brushed himself off with a groan and looked around the parking lot.

“I don’t have time for this!” The PA said. Then he ran back to the hotel, his original destination.

            The Driver was very confused.

I later learned a few more things. The PA had thought he was more important moving and helping the crew than wondering about his arm. His job was important, and therefore since he could still run his job took precedence. He seemed fine, and therefore didn’t want to worry about it, especially since the car was undamaged. He did his job to the letter before sitting down and examining his body for any actual injuries. His arm, he found out, was bruised up badly and sore but otherwise fine. The rest of his body had some bruises and scrapes but was otherwise unharmed. With all the chaos happening that day, he had come away relatively unharmed. He was lucky and he knew it. Much much worse could have happened.

He got a free beer that night for marching on after being hit by a damn car, and then went on with his life with a cool story to tell.
