Every year since 1997, Spirit River Municipal Library has hosted an Art Show and Sale to showcase local artists and raise some money for the library. This year, at least 14 artists will fill the school gym with their work. Look for drawings, photography and watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings. There is always something beautiful, unique or unusual to encounter. It’s a pleasant way to spend a peaceful afternoon. Admission is free, and the homemade lunch is delicious!

There is still room for more artists. This is a friendly venue for beginners and professionals alike. Work must be framed and ready to hang. You may sell or just show, as you please. If interested in a spot, please contact Judy Brown at 780-864-3608.

When I looked out my window on Saturday I saw a grey cloudy day with a skiff of snow on the ground.

When I looked out my window on Saturday I saw a grey cloudy day with a skiff of snow on the ground. Not ideal weather, but that wouldn’t stop me from heading down to the community of Sunnyside to check out Wreck City.

“Wreck City: An epilogue for 809” is a group of local artists who have taken nine houses that are slated for demolition and turned them into temporary art, instillation, and performance spaces. 8 artist/curators and 100+ extremely creative individuals have worked very hard to bring this together and I was super excited to see the results!

“Enter at your own risk” is posted at the entrance of each house as well as the names of the artists who contributed to that space, but don’t be alarmed, everything inside is secure. Here’s a tip: for the optimum experience wear clothes you can move around in and stable shoes. Also forget the big purse or tote, it will only get in your way. The spaces are amazingly hands on and remind me of a real life snakes and ladders game. There are things to climb, crawl through, peek in and slide down, but only if you want to, and believe me you’ll want to! Thank goodness I was wearing thick tights!

This is truly an experience for all your senses whether it be sight, touch, smell, sound, or taste (fresh baked cookies anyone?). Each day also features different performances. Click Here for a schedule. I had a fantastic time immersing myself in these houses and chatting with the artists. The following photos are only a tiny sample of what you can expect from Wreck City. If your going to be in Calgary this week you would be missing out if you didn’t venture down to Sunnyside to check it out!

Wreck City is free and open to all ages, everyday until April 27th.

visit their website at www.wreckcityproject.wordpress.com to find out more!

Yes, that’s a slide and yes, that’s a railing. Safety first!

This is a great example of how when people come together, they can take something that one might deem worthless and transform it into something extraordinary. Have I piqued your interest yet?

Music is what fills my soul. Last night, I had the pleasure of going to a live performance at Bearno

Music is what fills my soul. Last night, I had the pleasure of going to a live performance at Bearno’s Pizza down on 2nd and Main St, next to the KFC Yum! Center.

My girlfriend Meredith and I had planned a date night to see the Louisville Riverbats play the Indianapolis Indians and after we were gonna meet up with friends to enjoy the music of Dev & Doug.

I was blown away by the level of musicianship displayed by both! Meredith said they were awesome and OMG … I want them to go on tour tomorrow. I want them to play at live lunch on 9.19 WFPK. I want to see them at waterfront Wednesday.

I have never in all my life seen a local artist that could play all the notes of a Jimmy Page guitar solo and then roll right into Panama by Van Halen. I have never heard a woman play the Devil went down to Georgia on a electric fiddle and I have never watch a duo modulate from Beat It, by Michael Jackson on guitar into The Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers. Glee had nothing on these two when it comes to mash ups and I love that show.

The show was amazing and they were willing to requests! You ask for Fleetwood Mac, you get it. Jefferson Airplane, no sweat. Hell Dev & Doug could play the freaking Backstreet Boys if they wanted to learn it.

Nothing but pure electric fire in the heart of the city. Jason Aldeen was playing at the Yum! Center, but the real show, the show people didn’t know they were going to see was right at Bearno’s off Main St.

Local music … It’s one of the things that puts the nation’s sumpteenth largest city, resting on the Banks of the Ohio river, on the map. It’s a weird place with pockets of awesome. So if you get a chance, go see Dev & Doug (They are playing tonight, 4/20/2013 at this same Bearno’s location).

Your face will be melted off. I know mine was.

The Avondale Arts Alliance invites you to our first ArtsMingle event on Wednesday, April 24th, 7 pm at Little Tree Art Studios. ArtsMingle was created to bring together those who support the arts, culture and culinary businesses and organizations in our community with the creatives behind it all.

Sounds amazing, right? Join us next Wednesday evening to meet the Avondale Arts Alliance Board and mingle with other creatives and arts advocates while enjoying a glass of wine, beer and tasty nibbles. Our plan is to host 3-4 of these events a year – we’d love to get your feedback and hear what you’d like to see at future events!

We also invite you to learn about upcoming Arts Alliance projects and how you can get be a part of them! We are always on the lookout for folks who are interested in supporting our mission to grow the arts in and around Avondale Estates. There will be information about how you can be involved in AutumnFest, our annual ArtsParty, future ArtsMingle events and other opportunities for businesses and individuals to support us. See our ArtsMingle Facebook event page to RSVP.
