In yet another twist involving Verizon’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, contrary to our earlier report, Verizon will not provide a software update to unlock the encrypted bootloader. Several users obtained information from Verizon and Samsung customer service reps indicating the Galaxy S III would be unlocked “soon.” The misunderstanding appears to stem from information regarding an update from Verizon to unlock GSM roaming on the S III, not an update to unlock the bootloader.
For now, users interested in a Verizon Galaxy S III are back to looking at the Developer Edition to be made available through Samsung if they want to avoid the locked bootloader. The other option is to wait to see whether the bootloader bounty produces any results.

Motorola confirmed tonight, in a series of tweets, that the Atrix HD will indeed have a locked and signed bootloader. This means that altering the kernel on the Atrix HD will not be possible, limiting the customization possibilities of the phone. In other words, no custom ROMs. The phone, however, should still be rootable.

It’s not the end of the world, though, since Moto also tweeted the following:

“…our goal is still to provide a way to unlock the bootloaders on our devices to those who wish to do so, more details to come.“

So it seems that although the Atrix HD will launch with a locked bootloader, an unlock method may be coming in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

When we told you that Verizon was keeping their Galaxy S III tightly locked up, many folks were upset, considering the other carriers have user-onlockable bootloaders on their S III’s. Well fret no more, young hackers, for Samsung has just announced that they will be offering a developer edition S III that works on Verizon.

This hacker-friendly version will be sold directly from Samsung’s developer portal (developer.samsung.com) for $599. It’s unfortunate Verizon won’t sell it directly themselves since it won’t be subsidized, so if you want this phone for $199, you’re out of luck. But if you’re willing to spend the bucks or don’t want to be on-contract anyway, Samsung’s offer should be music to your ears. Of course, many of you who already purchased the Verizon S III are probably a little miffed. Time for a return?

All the usual warnings apply… unlocking, modding, flashing, etc. is all done at your own risk. Screw something up and you’ve got a very pretty and expensive brick. But we know you’ll be careful.

Hit the break to read Samsung’s mini-FAQ about this edition.

Samsung is pleased to announce the Galaxy S III Developer Edition for Verizon Wireless. The Developer Edition will be sold only through Samsung.com. This special edition device features a user-unlockable bootloader.

Who is this for?

Samsung and Verizon Wireless recognize that there are many enthusiasts and professional developers that are interested in customizing their device with third-party ROM software. Unlocking the bootloader can put the stability of the phone in jeopardy; therefore, only experienced developers should attempt to unlock the bootloader.

What about the other carriers?

Other versions of the Galaxy S III are sold with a user-unlockable bootloader as a standard feature. Those models are available directly from the respective carriers.

Where can I buy the Galaxy S III Developer Edition?

The Developer Edition will be sold online directly from Samsung. When the device is available for purchase, it will be sold through the Samsung developer portal at developer.samsung.com for $599.

Why is Verizon Wireless’ version locked?

Depending on the device, an open bootloader could prevent Verizon Wireless from providing the same level of customer experience and support because it would allow users to change the phone or otherwise modify the software and, potentially, negatively impact how the phone connects with the network. The addition of unapproved software could also negatively impact the wireless experience for other customers. Unlocking the device also voids the warranty.

Has Samsung always unlocked the bootloader on its phones?

While not all previous Samsung Android devices have had an easily unlockable bootloader, all of our other current Galaxy S III flagship lineup, and all Nexus-branded devices, support the standard bootloader unlocking procedure.

What happens if I load custom software and damage (“brick”) my phone?

Problems caused by unlocking the bootloader and installing custom software will not be covered by the warranty.

Problems with third-party and customized bootloader software can cause irreparable harm to the Galaxy S III. Users interested in performing these actions should proceed with caution and at their own risk. Out of warranty Galaxy S III Developer Edition devices will be serviced directly through Samsung, and service charges will apply.

With the 4.0.4 leak out a lot of people were wondering what happens if this is not made available to

With the 4.0.4 leak out a lot of people were wondering what happens if this is not made available to the general public. I did some digging around have been working with the built in backup of ICS using ADB. Read on for instructions to backup your phone.

The goal is to allow anyone that went to 4.0.4 IMM30B to be able to take a backup, go back to 4.0.2 and then install IMM76K. I also hope it will help anyone that waited to unlock their bootloader and doesn’t want to lose a lot of data.

There are some reports that this does not copy the media are properly. I recommend copying the sdcard area again after this backup to a separate location just in case a few pictures and things are not recovered properly. It goes without saying this may not be a perfect method and it may not backup everything. There is very limited documentation that I can find about the backup and restore process.

First you will need the Android SDK available here. You will also need to make sure your phone is in USB Debugging mode of course.

Then make sure you have the platform-tools package installed.

I have not rounded up all of the drivers for all of the phones but you will need the adb drivers for your device.

Plug in the phone.

Open a command prompt at the platform-tools location and enter.

adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\BackupName.ab

You can change the backup name if you so choose. This will backup the APKs, the shared “sdcard” area and app data.

You can also set a password, you also have to enter the encryption password if your device is encrypted.

Tap “Back up my data” on the screen that pops up on the phone and wait. My back up was over 5GB and took a little while to complete, please be patient. You will know it is finished when your phone retuns the the home screen or the screen you were on when you started the back up. (I am talking like in hours not minutes of patience.)

To restore you will use the command.

adb restore C:\BackupName.ab

I decided to try this with my NS4G that is running CM9 at the moment and the process works there as well (chosen because I knew I had a good backup from CWM to compare with). I did not have any issues with the restore after doing a data and cache wipe in CWM. When I did the restore I skipped the initial login process and proceeded directly to make sure USB Debugging was turned on. Once that was verified I restored the back up and everything was available.

For those of you who feel you may be stuck on IMM30B you should be able to backup IMM30B unlock, flash factory images for ICL53F and then update to IMM76K and restore. YMMV.

I have not tested a restore from IMM30B into IMM76K personally at this time please let me know if there are problems with a restore to a different version.

2011 was quite the year for HTC. It was the year where their strategy of pumping out device after device began to falter. Apple’s iPhone 4 showed that having one device, with definitive branding/marketing, and with excellent fit and finish could stand the test of time in consumer eyes…the device is still selling well mere months before its replacement. People began noticing chinks in HTC’s software armor as well. The venerable Sense enhancements to Android hit version 3.0 during this time period, and many began to feel like the overwrought animations and special effects were harming the user experience rather than helping it. The result? HTC suffered massive losses in 2011. Clearly some shift in strategy had to be made.

At MWC 2012, HTC revealed this shift. First, HTC would no longer put an emphasis on differentiated devices for super specific market segments or carrier wishes like the HTC Rhyme or Rezound. Instead, HTC would focus on attacking the three tiers of smartphone market segments head on under a unified brand. They would attempt to make the devices best in class in all aspects, not just one like sound or camera. Further, carriers wouldn’t be able to change the design of the devices or the names. Second, Sense 4′s new design would enhance Android 4.0, rather than detract from it. HTC was clear. One would be their focus and plan for the future.

All was right in the world, One X and S were praised by reviewers and customers the world over. A flaw in HTC’s plan was became apparent when it was revealed that the AT&T One X wouldn’t support HTC’s bootloader restriction removal service.

A bit of background: For a few years now, HTC’ followed in Motorola’s footsteps, encrypting the bootloader on their devices in the name of customer security. However, this presents an issue for developers of custom firmware for HTC and Motorola devices. While it’s possible to install custom firmware with the bootloader encrypted on Motorola devices, it’s clearly not preferable and is slightly more complicated. Tech savvy consumers balked at HTC’s decision and they now allow for devices to be decrypted via a web tool.

When it was revealed that the One X on AT&T wouldn’t support the web removal tool, I was somewhat stunned. Here was a device that was clearly going to be AT&T’s top Android phone, a device that was intended to save HTC’s fortunes, and now they were seemingly turning away a sizable power user segment who wanted the device. The boneheadedness of this decision was just shocking. HTC quickly distanced themselves in a somewhat cryptic statement:

“HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months,” HTC wrote. “Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we’ll continue to unlock additional devices in the future.

The real question on my mind was why this decision was even allowable? HTC wanted strict control over the hardware and branding, but with this misstep by AT&T they now risk damaging ever so slightly the brand they’ve worked so hard to create. HTC should have put their foot down and said: “Accept the device as is, in its entirety, or we’ll do a “one-off” device for you that doesn’t have any One branding.” A great example is the Evo 4G LTE: It has internals that are similar to the One X, but the device doesn’t contain any One branding both physically and in marketing.

As they expand their bundled services like HTCSense.com, the ability to stand their ground and insist upon the inclusion of their features in their entirety becomes very important. I suspect that the original implementation of HTCSense.com didn’t gain traction due to the lack of adoption by carriers, instead favoring their own services and products.

Will thishave a major effect on One X sales in the US? Probably not. Just looking at Motorola’s sales on Verizon since the bootloader encrypted Droid 2 demonstrates that an encryped bootlaoder does not majorly hinder sales. The segment of the population who will install custom kernels and firmware is still relatively small. Many average people will be enamored by the screen and overall hardware design. But it does alienate many buyers who consider themselves power users, but can’t afford or don’t want to pay the price required for a non carrier branded handset. These users, a vocal minority that has influence on many non techie people, will go elsewhere. As a company, wouldn’t you want to maximize sales and profits by not alienating anyone, regardless of how minor the userbase is?

And HTC have no one to blame but AT&T and themselves.

Some people are having trouble getting from the Android laying down to the recovery options. What has worked for me every time is to press power first then press volume up. I usually have the power button held for about a half a second before pressing volume up. Then use volume down to select the second option and then choose update.zip.

Choose to install update and then pick the update.zip file and wait for the magic.

13 April 2012, Sony Mobile Communication officially released the final version of Ice Cream Sandwich

13 April 2012, Sony Mobile Communication officially released the final version of Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, neo V, and ray. How good or how bad this Final Official ROM will perform? I will tell you some reviews and experiences using the Sony’s Stock ROM of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Device test: Xperia neo V (MT11i), rooted, Locked Bootloader, installed Nordic ICS using Flashtool.

Hardware specs: Qualcomm MSM8255, 1GHz Snapdragon S2 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, 512 MB RAM.

Android version: 4.0.3

Build number: 4.1.A.0.562

First impression

The most awaited feature in this update is [I think] the Face unlock, revamped task manager and the new browser. The new task manager offers the screenshots of running apps. It also enables the user to kill apps right from it. If you want to kill a running app, just swipe left the running app, and it will be shutted down.

the ICS task manager

This is a new features that we can’t find in Gingerbread. Next, the ICS browser offers faster browsing, wider html5 support and screenshot of each tabs. In the html5 test, ICS browser scored 290 plus 3 bonus points, leaving Gingerbread browser in score of 189. In the BrowserMark Benchmark, ICS browser scored 53259.

What’s New

Smart Dial and New Lockscreen

Smart Dial is also a feature that missing on the previous Gingerbread release. Smart Dial is an essential smartphone feature nowadays. Happily, Sony added this feature to this ICS release. Smart Dial will predict the number you want to call by matching the uncomplete number you have dialed with the saved numbers on contact. Unfortunately, this feature slows down the phone a little bit while pressing the dialpad. The Phone app is also modified a bit, it now shows the call log right away on the app.

phone and the call log

the Smart Dial

Lockscreen is also changed. The Gingerbread lockscreen shows unlock swipe and silent swipe. The new lockscreen shows unlock and camera swipe. Moreover, while you play music on its default music player, the new lockscreen will show the album art, song title, and rewind, play, forward control.

You can also swipe down the notification bar right from the lockscreen. This will comfort you to view notifications without unlocking the screen.

There is also some choice for the lockscreen layout. You can choose None, Swipe lock, PIN lock, Password, Pattern lock as same as on GB, and the new Face unlock. The new Face unlock is a modern feature that enables user to unlock the screen using face captured by phone’s camera.

Using Face unlock, you have to set up it first. You have to let the phone recognize your face first. You can do it when you choose Face unlock in Settings > Security > Face Unlock. After setting up the pattern face, you will also set up a pattern lock if the face unlock can’t recognize you. The cons of face unlock: it seldom recognize my face

Contacts

You now can create a group for your contacts. It makes easier organization when you have a lot of contacts. The ICS contacts also integrated with Facebook, call log, and messaging app. You can view the recent activities with your contact right from this app.

Gallery

This ICS upgrade brings you two different types of gallery. The first one is Xperia Gallery, and the next one is Stock ICS’ Gallery. The Xperia Gallery offers the Gallery UI of Gingerbread Stock Gallery with its nice effect and picture downscaling. While the ICS’ Gallery offers you some new feature with minimalistic effect, no picture downscaling, and a small picture preview while browsing your photos. Honestly, I prefer the ICS’ Gallery to Xperia Gallery. The ICS’ Gallery is faster, and it does not downscale your photos.

New Themes

Sony has integrated their new NXT themes. Unfortunately, there is no Cosmic Flow live wallpaper as seen on Xperia S.

the new themes

Animations and Transitions

On ICS, the animations and transitions can be set up how slow and smooth it will appear. It can be set up via developer options. The animations and transitions is also nicer than Gingerbread’s.

ICS Native App

In ICS, there some native app which has better functionality than Gingerbread has. This native app is YouTube, Google Maps, Gallery as I mentioned before, and Gmail. Each of these app has been upgraded to a better version than in Gingerbread. These app in Gingerbread can’t be upgraded like in ICS.

Performance and Benchmark

The Quadrant Standard benchmark scored only 979 on ICS. On Gingerbread, 2011 Xperia devices used to have score about 1600 (GSMarena.com review).

Quadrant Standard result

The BrowserMark benchmark also disappointing. After updating to ICS, my neo V only scored 53259. Based on GSMarena.com review, the Gingerbread device scored about 65000.

About RAM usage, ICS is nearly same as Gingerbread. ICS leaves leaves about 80-100 MB of free RAM of daily usage without loading any applications.

The Downside of Xperia ICS

Some Kind of Lag

The Xperia ICS is a little bit lag. As we know, Android 4.0 will need more advance hardware requirement than Gingerbread. I think Sony should do some tweak on the next minor update to optimize the perfomance. Actually, Sony has managed to bring an app called “Performance Assistant” which is used to disable some unimportant app to optimize the perfomance. But it will reduce the functionality of our phone, right?

the Performance Assistant app

Gaming and incompatible apps

Moreover, the gaming perfomance also reduced too. The Temple Run is rather laggy and unplayable. I think arc S will run Temple Run more smoothly as it has more CPU power. The Running and Falling Fred is crashed on launch. There actually are two causes. The ICS user is still about 5% of worldwide Android user, and Gingerbread is about 60-70%. This fact makes Android Developers delay their update for apps to be supported on ICS. But, I think this is just a matter of time. In the next 3-6 months, most of apps will be made compatible with ICS. Happily, most of productivity apps is compatible with ICS, so you don’t have to be worried when you likely to use OfficeSuite, Photoshop Express, etc. Moreover, ICS uses more resources of the phone so games are difficult to perform as smooth as on Gingerbread.

Flash Player disabled

After installing this update, your flash player will be disabled and you have to download it from Play Store. I don’t know why Sony disables Flash Player in this update. I think Sony just don’t want to make a performance sacrifice by having Flash Player installed out-of-the-box.

Not as stable as Gingerbread.

After some days of daily use of this ICS ROM, my phone usually reboot by itself. I don’t know why, but I think it is because crash of background aplications or bug. This ROM is not fully free of bug. However, there’s no issues that will annoy you to fulfill you communication needs. The mobile networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Portable Hotspot, and tethering run flawlessly without any problem.

Conclusion

Xperia ICS offers some beautiful new features such as Face unlock, upgraded browser, new task manager, new lockscreen, new notification area, Smart Dial, etc. This update brings you more easier organization of your productivity, and communication needs. However, you have to reconsider if you want to update, because this ROM is rather laggy, have some incompatible games, and not fully free of bug.

I hope Sony give a minor or even major updates to Xperia ICS to fix and tweak the ROM to be faster, better, and stable.

Bonus

ICS easter egg

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich easter egg. You can access this by tapping 3 times on “Android version” in Settings > About phone.

Anyone familiar with the bootloader situation for recent Motorola Android phones knows the sad truth

Anyone familiar with the bootloader situation for recent Motorola Android phones knows the sad truth of what happens when manufacturers decide to impede progress. They only slow us down. Yes, the outlook has been generally pretty bleak for anyone with a new Motorola phone, but XDA member kholk has given us new hope. I’m not even gonna try explaining it, but freemymoto.com has a great explanation here. As much as I can gather, it appears he has a way around the bootloader and all he needs now is a kernel to run. Which is great news for Atrix users and helps give hope to us Droid X/2 users. Kexec can work! Let’s pray eventually they get it running on our phones!
