By: Various authors and journalists The bank that coined the phrase, “we listen, we understand

By: Various authors and journalists

The bank that coined the phrase, “we listen, we understand, we make it work” seemed to forget that public relations slogan during the large CAW labor protest at 500 Woodward Avenue, in Detroit, MI. As you recall, Canadian workers of Adraco and Aramco a division of Catalina Precision, have been denied their severance, termination, and vacation pay by the Catalina’s creditors Comerica Bank. Numerous coalitions were there to demand justice for workers who just want to be paid what they are owed and Comerica controls the purse strings. They feel that workers being paid is more important that Comerica executive bonuses. Participants signed a letter to the company’s executives asking Comerica to live up to the so called “code of ethics” that is posted on Comerica’s website. The code of ethics seems like a great public relations spin tool but the workers with children to feed were more interested in Comerica showing action; not just empty public relations gimmicks. As one of the participants read from Comerica’s code of ethics, looks of disgust and frustration fell over participants faces. There appeared to be a huge disconnect between corporate marketing propaganda and the daily reality that the workers were facing.
At one point a protester challenged the CEO, Ralph Babb and the Michigan President Tom Ogden to respond to the workers concerns. Comerica executives were challenged to answer the following questions:

Do they think it was fair that Comerica was rewarded $2.25 billion in TARP money approximately 30 days after the Michigan attorney general Mike Cox forced Comerica Securities to pay fines and restitution of over $1.5 billion to shareholders?

Is it fair that the banking industry has received $23.7 million in subsidies, bailouts and backdoor corporate welfare while homeowner forclosure rates are at 15% and property values have collapsed?

Is it fair that the citizens labor under disasterous debt burdens while the banking industry has been given subsidies that could have paid off personal mortgage debt three times over?

Workers have alleged fraud by the company owners. Should law enforcement launch an investigation into what Comerica knew and when they knew it? Are there possible fraudulent conveyance issues regarding the collateral?

Is if fair that US banks are speculating with the TARP money, including foreign exchange trading that is driving the US dollar lower?

Is if fair that Comerica CEO Ralph Babb got a raise in 2008?

Is it fair that Comerica stock holders have lost money over the past 5 years while Comerica executives have gotten extremely wealthy?

Is it fair that Comerica Bank has so much taxpayer TARP money and at the same time ranks in the top ten banks for loans to company insiders?

Is it fair that these loans to corporate insiders are not fully transparent?

Is it fair that Comerica has refused to give an account of exactly where the $2.25 billiion in TARP money went and why?

Is if fair that Comerica executives seem to hide in their plush offices and refuse to answer the public’s questions? Perhaps the next protest should be at the home of a Comerica executive like Michigan President, Tom Ogden in Grosse Pointe? Perhaps neighbors should have a chance to see exactly what serous issues Comerica executives are dodging?

No Comerica executives were willing to address these questions. To the contrary, a goon from Comerica’s security staff came outside to harrass the protesters and interfere with the protest. A Comerica security goon constantly interfered with the groups right to free speech and free assembly. At the same time various Comerica employees watched the protesters from the lobby of the building. Many protesters commented on the arrogant smirks from the “Comericasuits” that watched the workers appeal for fairness. After letter to Comerica management had been signed by all the attendees the CAW made an attempt to deliver it to someone in the lobby. To our surprise, Comerica had locked the doors and therefore could not receive the signed letter. Even Comerica customers and employees were unable to get into the front door after Comerica locked them out at approximately 12:45 pm. Participants thought this as an act of wholesale cowardice and arrogance. The signed letter had to be left at Comerica’s front door while the various journalists continued to take notes. This is what $2.25 billion of your tax dollars now sit. What will Comerica plan as an encore at future protests?

Ok, so before I go into anything else for this week, I am going to weigh in on an issue that seems t

Ok, so before I go into anything else for this week, I am going to weigh in on an issue that seems to be a hot topic around here lately. Namely, the 2am lockout for clubs in Qld.

For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, in 2006 a (national? I’m not sure on that one…) 2am lockout was introduced in clubs and pubs. Now, what this means is that by 2am you need to be in whichever venue you want to stay in for the rest of the night; if you leave a club or simply get stuck on the way from one to another after it hits 2am, it’s home time for you. No one is allowed to enter a club or pub past this time, even if you just popped outside for a smoke or some fresh air.

The Queensland government now wants to push up this lockout to midnight, and close all the clubs at 2am. So, you are stuck in whichever club you’re in from 12am, and at 2am everyone will be kicked out onto the streets.

There are so many issues that come along with this idea it’s not even funny. You have obvious ramifications like people getting drunker a lot faster and earlier to try and compensate for the lack of time. The inevitable increase in violence that comes along with that. This puts a further strain on the already pushed-to-the-limit police presence in any places where this lockout is enforced.

Beyond the obvious, you have implications for the hospitality industry itself. Hospitality workers having to deal with a greater number of much more intoxicated people. Losing hours and therefore money due to the lockout. The inevitable number of people deciding not to go out in places that enforce the ban at all, especially when they have to travel to do so, which will therefore leave a huge hole in the hospitality industry. Also the fact that you are messing with one of the biggest revenue sources for places in Queensland such as The Valley and the Gold Coast.

Oh, but that’s still not all. You also have the issue of people being stuck with no way to get home – can you imagine how difficult it will be to get a cab at 2am? That is hard enough to do as it is with clubs closing at 5am, let alone at 2am with everyone kicked out on to the streets at the same time. You also have the cost of running public transport at all hours of the night where it would not normally run. And that is if people even choose to take public transport, which is dangerous enough to do as the sun is rising.

So why does the government want to enforce this lockout/shutdown? Because they think it is going to solve any violence problems we have that arise after people have had a big night out. Um, yeah how about no. When I was living in Melbourne, there was no lockout, and clubs were open until 10am. Without saying that problems didn’t exist, because that would be naive, I have to admit there was not nearly as much violence as there is in Queensland on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Also, by the time people actually got out of the clubs, it was daylight and everyone just kind of moved on and went home. It kind of puts you off any violent or disorderly behaviour when you walk out of a club into the daylight with people bustling about their day around you. Also, I found people were more chilled out during the night, because everyone knew they still had hours to party, and eased off on the heavy drinking in a short space of time idea. By the time the clubs closed, people were already sobering up.

I was talking to my friend at work the other day who is from England, and he was telling me that clubs work like that over there as well. The amount of problems they have in comparison to Queensland post lockout are negligible. Even compared to Queensland pre lockout with a 5am shutout. There is a reason other states and countries are taking this approach – it works. Obviously the lockout does not, or else we wouldn’t still be trying to come up with solutions for problems that were meant to be stopped by the original lock out.

On a personal level, the lockout and shutout do not really bother me. The amount of times I actually go out these days is negligible, and when I do, the amount of times I stay out past 1 in the morning are few and far between. However, whether or not it affects me on a large scale personally does not negate the fact that even I am smart enough to see the numerous problems and implications this idea will bring about. Also, I do like having the option of going out, and when I do I want to be safe and able to have fun, and have the option of having a long night out when the mood strikes me.

Come on, Queensland government, what are you doing?!

So, what is your take on the lockout/shutout idea? Right? Wrong? Idiotic? Smart? Would you support it, or fight it, and why?

Boston – They are not only beating their opponents but really giving them something to think about.

Phoenix – what a surprise… I will put my foot in mouth…they are really coming. They started with weak teams…but that win over the first team…impressed me. Nash has been showing alot of team leader ship, so i believe that this is the real Phoenix.

Denver – Unlike phoenix am not really surprised…and they only lost to the number 4 team on this ranking.

Miami – another foot in my mouth, they really are showing up so far.

Orlando – Bad offense in the loss to Detroit but otherwise…they are still good.

Lakers – For some reason I should feel bad putting them this low even though they don’t have their big men, but hey, am more impressed with other teams.

Houston – Well here is one Houston without a problem…with losses to Portland and Lakers…without Yao…they will be fine

Dallas – I guess Marion didn’t destroy the chemistry…good job.

Atlanta – I thought Jamal Crawford would be a great pick up for Atlanta and guess what…I was right.

Portland – Portland has to show more than a 3-3 record because, they have been an upcoming team for like 20 years now…but on the bright side…their loss are close losses. >5 points If I am right.

Chicago – I know it’s the beginning of the season but I still stand by the fact I said if they ride their run in playoffs they would be good.

San Antonio – I am a bit biased on this one…they haven’t been playing the best, but not bad either.

Clevland – I am kinda disappointed, am sure you are to… but it’s a work in progress, shaq and lebron needs some balance and shaq and ilgasqus shouldn’t play together.

Utah – another guilty position…they had a hard start…but it’s no excuse…beat the best to beat the best.

Charlotte – they are without a key player diaw.. but they are still holding there own.

Toronto – they beat clevland and they thought they were the shit…then lost to Memphis…ouch!

New Orleans – as my second favorite team, I am saddened that they started kind of horribly…

I don’t really want to rank the other teams… I think it’s too early to rank them because they are all bad except one. That is why I am ranking this last team 20th…No guys, not the knicks…it’s their cross-town rivals the NETS.

20. Nets – Two words “no wins”

She laid the roots for a rational feminist movement when women were not accepted as capable of being anywhere near rational.
So, the referee are on lockout. Can some tell when the hell a Strike started being called a lockout.

So, the referee are on lockout. Can some tell when the hell a Strike started being called a lockout. Well, that’s not the point. The story behind this is that, one day the referees decided they needed more money, they went to David Stern (the commissioner) to plead for more money, but in the words of Referees spokesman Lamell McMorris “Stern is acting childish and not negotiating in good faith, so Stern removed himself from the process.” Come on people, you guys are the people we are meant to be looking up to. David, your like old enough to be my…my fathers mother and your acting like me…sad.

Well David Stern did have something to say about it. “In fact if it was going to get personal — which apparently he’s decided to make it by calling news media and leveling a series of inaccurate allegations — that I would absent myself from the negotiations, which I have. Hopefully we’ll make a deal with the referees, or we won’t, but it won’t be on the basis of personality, it’ll be on the basis of economics”. I personally think that is more public that personal but ok. If they want to fight, i got the popcorn.

So basically, the contract ran out and as a new 2 year deal was coming along, Stern was trying to make a drastic reduction in their cuts and from there, everything went downhill. The league is now forced to use back-up referees from the D-league and Summer League. This is definately going to be a problem esp getting respect from players. Foul mouthed Rasheed Wallace is going to owe the league alot this year.

McMorris feels that it really isnt about the financial problems the league is facing, he thinks Stern is trying to get rid of all the old coaches. Which i personally disagree with. You cant throw away experience, just doesnt happen. In conclusion, McMorris is willing to make a deal with the commisoner if he is willing to come to his senses. Lets see what happens. Will the NBA be called by sub-par officials or would we get our refs back.

As I walked through Wellington Square I noticed it was decisively louder and a lot more crowded than my usual Sunday strolls. I lined up to use a toilet and a passing group of oiled up, shirtless men were kind enough to inform me the reason for the crowds was the 2009 Parklife festival.

Lost in a sea of muddled sounds I found Busy P playing some new and interesting songs. Busy P talked in between and during tracks, which is a massive pet hate of mine, however I can always make an exception for Busy P and the girls flashing their bare breasts for his camera didn’t seem to mind much either.

As with any outdoor event the best sound for each act can require a bit of moving about. Anyone expecting the sound to be awesome wherever they decide to stand needs a reality check. I wandered through the crowd to find a better position and all hell started to break loose. Fences came crashing down, crushing the tired people who were sheltering from the surprising heat. Stampedes of men, old enough to know better, had just jumped the fence and were doing their best to avoid being grabbed by lumbering security guards. I’m ok with fence jumpers, when they’re kids, because they could be underage, too poor, just experimenting or don’t know any better. Adults should know better, and they definitely should not lash out and start punching female security guards once they are caught

Bored of the violence I turned my attention back to the stage, which had become inhabited by MSTRKFT. They played vigorous dance tracks with their trademark DAR NAR NAR NAR riff over the top. The crowd responded at first but when a set is played continuously, at the same level, for a long period of time it stops from being energetic and just becomes dull.

Luckily sets were being kept short and Crystal Castles came out before too much of the crowd was lost. Alice did her thing of screaming into the microphone, which was thoroughly entertaining until someone ran on stage kicking out some leads. The leads happened to be connected to some vital equipment, which killed the music for a few moments. Those moments turned out to be a few too many for the face chewing mob I happened to be surrounded by. In a manner of seconds it all turned weird. A smaller one was knocked to the ground and the larger, more dominant males bent down and started to tear the flesh from his body in a vein attempt to harvest the remainder of the drugs that were still pumping through his limp lifeless body. I felt disgusted by their cannibalistic behaviour but at the same time I respected them for their obviously strong belief in recycling. The music came back on and order was restored, but apparently the damage done was irreversible so we were treated to a 5-minute noise extravaganza as Alice smashed apart a drum kit and threw its pieces into the press photography area.

Erol Alkan was rolled onto the stage and Parklife was lifted to another level. The craziest, heaviest sounds you’ve never heard came tearing through the speakers. Erol kept playing with the crowd using massive build-ups and then dropping the music back with fat, speaker destroying bass. It was impossible not to dance. We were treated to the brand spanking new Boys Noize song Kontact Me (It’s the one that goes “come with me… do you remember?), as well as Waves and Death Suite, the songs co-created with Erol. Erol’s remix of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Zero went down really well but the highlight of his set was a live reworking of his Justice Waters of Nazereth remix, and if you thought that song was heavy before, this new version sounded like a tank being driven at full speed into a munitions factory.

Tiga closed the Air stage and he opened with his brand new remix of Miike Snow Black & Blue (you can download that song legally here for free). It was always going to be difficult coming on after Erol, however Tiga was helped by being better known to the majority of the crowd. Tiga tore into a set full of acid house and banging techno, which would have fairly quickly scared off anyone who was expecting to hear a mix of the quirky electro pop that Tiga generally fills his albums with.

As the clock struck 10pm Fat Cat was released to tuck us all into bed. With Perth now regularly enforcing 12am lockouts on Sunday nights there was never any real hope for Parklife acts to make an appearance at the after-parties scattered across town. I would love someone to attempt to explain the logic behind trying to force thousands of people to exit the city at the same time from a city that has almost non-existent public transport. Maybe we should organise 10 000 people to try and enter Parliament House 5 minutes before closing time and see if that helps knock some reality into a government that is clearly out of touch with lives of the youth of today.

The NBA has long been one of my favorite sports leagues. The players are recognizable, not hidden by masks or helmets. The game is uptempo and electric, 48 minutes of non-stop, heartpounding action. Players such as LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Dwight Howard continue to take the game to a new level almost daily, not to mention the young gunners like Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose and Brandon Roy. With all this talent and excitement, you would think that the NBA would be on track to have one of its most exciting and enjoyable seasons ever. That, however, may not be the case. As much as we may hate to admit it, referees are an integral part of the NBA game. They can influence the scores in ways even the players couldn’t, and they play a very important part in the outcome of everything from preseason games to the NBA Finals. Seeing that the referees are so important, it’s shocking to me to see that they are on the verge of locking out, and the NBA seems fine with that. Professional basketball is an exquisite sport, and there are only a select few individuals who are suited to officiate it at the highest level possible. Why the NBA would shun these people away is beyond me. Whatever people may say, the replacement officials the NBA has in training right now will not be able to referee the games as effectively as the experienced, battle-tested referees the NBA is at odds with. It is not like they are asking for ridiculous demands, they just want to know that when they leave the game that they will be financially secure, and I’m sure every one of us would like that security. The NBA needs to resolve this situation as soon as possible, because bringing in referees that don’t know the intricacies of the players, and the game itself, will only result in more bad calls, more player and coach complaining after games, and an overall downgrade in the quality of the game we love to watch.

To the common sports fan, the refs are nothing more than the ones that screwed up the game over a ba

To the common sports fan, the refs are nothing more than the ones that screwed up the game over a bad call. But the truth is the refs actually have a tough job; really tough. First of all to be truly objective is near impossible to do, and to dedicate your life to a sport with out actually getting to root for one of the teams is just torture.

The way that I view the NBA referee strike is 2 fold at this point. On the one hand the action taken by the NBA is a little underhanded. By simply hiring new referees from the NBA development league, the referee’s Union is completely undercut and essentially worthless. On the other hand, the NBA needs to have refs in order for their games to take place, and they can’t simply sit back and watch as their league falls apart over a silly argument. Now when I say silly; let me clarify. Senior refs in the NBA are making salary of around $500,000 per year and are concerned because the league would like to revamp the pension and severance packages to be more in accordance with their declining budget. With the current make-up of the economy, I would say that a half a mil each year isn’t looking to bad right now.

With the possibility of all new referees starting the season as a result of the lockout, I thought it would be interesting to examine the status of the officiating class before and after this change:

Before

Over the past several years, the NBA has received a hailstorm of criticism towards their referee staff, especially in regards to the Tim Donaghy scandal of 2007. While no ref can make all the right calls all the time, it is the responsibility of the ref to remain consistent in how he represents the rules of the game. The concept of star treatment in the NBA has become all too familiar as the big name players find it easy to pretty much do what they please with out consequence. This is especially true when it comes to traveling and foul calls. Last year at a Wizards/Cavaliers game, Lebron James was called for traveling on a patented “crab dribble” move in the closing seconds of the game. The sports world was shocked; not that Lebron was capable of traveling, but that the call was made. This type of officiating should be the norm, not a rarity. When four steps are taken without a dribble, traveling has occurred.

After

With a potentially brand new, fresh batch of referees entering into the 2009/2010 NBA season, it is possible that the current state of officiating could be vastly improved. These new refs are by no means new to the game as they are being recruited from the D-League, and have yet to be jaded by the celebrity star power that is housed in the NBA. This could potentially mean consistent and unbiased calling across the board, no matter who the player. Now as I mentioned before, officiating is no easy task, and the bump from the D-League to the spotlight will mean added pressure and heavy scrutiny for the freshman class which could result in missed calls and rookie mistakes. One thing is for sure; however, these new refs want to be there and will make sure that they prove their worth. Becoming a professional ref is a particularly daunting task and to stay atop of their game, the new batch will be looking to make a good impression on the league.

Some of the opportunities to get a locksmith are to call a locksmith company or to go to a locksmithing shop. Most people begin their locksmithing career by working for a locksmithing shop. This allows a person to gain a great deal of experience while being paid. Other people prefer to begin their own locksmithing business without first working for another locksmithing shop.

Orange Locksmith- 24/7 Local Safe and Fast Service – Coupons

Successful owners of locksmithing shops usually have business acumen and a broad base of locksmithing skills. Many small shops are one-man or family operations. Other locksmithing shops have 30 or more full-time employees, and the owners rarely have to go out on calls. The number of employees a shop has isn’t as important: to its success as the range and quality of work the shop performs. There are two basic types of locksmithing shops: store-front and mobile. A store-front shop is operated from a building customers walk into. A mobile shop is operated from a vehicle by a mobile locksmith, usually a van or truck. Mobile shops always go to the customer to perform locksmith services. Most store-front shops use vehicles to allow them to offer both in-store and mobile services.

If you decide you do need a locksmith, how do you find one? To re-key your home, install new locks, get in or out of something, or simply have a lock checked out, you will need to know how to find a good locksmith. Once you find an expert locksmith, then you will be able to avoid the deep research needed every other time.

Another way to find a good locksmith is through trial and error, or at least trial. Get into the local yellow pages and find a few in your area. Next, you should start making phone calls and setting up meetings with each locksmith. Picking the right locksmith the first time around will require getting to know them a little bit. Establish a relationship with the locksmith you choose and you may find that you receive discounted rates the next time you require to call on them.

As a final point, once you have found a locksmith you trust, you will never be without aid. Most local locksmiths are available 24 hours in an emergency. So keep the number and show your loyalty and you will never be completely locked out.

The most basic service that a locksmith offers is the installation of locks in a new home. Home owners naturally want their personal safety as well as their material possessions secured. This can be done by setting up locks on every window and door in the home. But apart from this, locksmiths also replace or repair locks for older homes. Other related residential locksmith services include key duplication in cases when there is a need for every family member to have their own set of keys, installation of home vaults and safes, repairs and desk lock installation, garage door lock installation and repairs and of course, overall maintenance of house locks whether electronic or not.

If those locks have been there through two sets of residence, you are looking at ex husbands, ex girlfriends, siblings, parents, friends, and even housekeepers of all those residence. That does not make for great security.

However, a locksmith is just the one to call to fix such a problem.
A locksmith will come over to your home and perform a service called re-keying your home. That is, the locksmith with set up the locks so that one key will work on them all. Your garage, front door, deadbolt, and even closet doors can all be working off of one key. It will be easier for you to keep track of the keys as well as for you to keep track of who has keys to the house. The amount of time such a re-keying service takes is determined by a lot of factors.

Santa Ana Locksmith - 24/7 Local Safe and Fast Service – Coupons

The best recommendation is to contact a couple of different local locksmiths and see what they charge to re-key a home. You may even have to have them out to put together an estimate. How many locks you have, how many keys you need, and the complexity of those locks will all factor into how long it will take and how much it will cost to get everything on one key. It can, though, definitely be done.

Many homes use the lock-in-knob, this offers you convenience but it does not offer security from break-ins. The fact is that many lock-in-knob type locks can be opened using a simple credit card, your home is just not secure if you are using this type of lock.

Lock-in-knob type locks are fine for internal doors locks that you want to lock for privacy reasons, but all exterior doors need a deadbolt lock to give the level of security required. With this type of lock when you operate the key the mechanism slides a strong metal bolt from the door into the door’s frame.

If you’ve ever lost your keys to your house, you may be concerned that someone may find them and use them for illegal entry if they also happen to know who lost them and where you live. In such a case, you would call a locksmith to have your locks re-keyed, but you would not be changing your locks because there is no need.

Norwalk Locksmith - 24/7 Local Safe & Fast Service – Coupons

There are also other instances when you would choose to re-key rather than change locks. Such examples would be when buying a new home to make sure that any keys that may still have been kept by prior owners or may have been given to their family members will no longer be useful for entry to what is now your private domain and not theirs. Of course, if the locks of your new home are damaged or have been weakened due to age, then it is recommended to have the hardware changed as well, and this would involve changing the locks.
