Inspiration, if you believe in it, is quite fickle. You can have a great idea one day, and then not

Inspiration, if you believe in it, is quite fickle. You can have a great idea one day, and then not come up with anything noteworthy for weeks at a time. Even if you think inspiration is really just about hard work, there are always times when your desire to work hard just isn’t there. So how can you stack the deck in your favor and make it more likely that you will continue to be inspired consistently and frequently?

If you want to direct lightning to strike a certain target, you erect a lightning rod. The lightning rod is frequently struck because of its particular construction, material and positioning. To become a lightning rod for inspiration, you have to pay attention to very similar things.

Record the Context

Writing down your ideas is a great way not to lose them, whether you’re doing so digitally or using more old-fashioned methods. But while many people write down what it is they thought of, few think to record what it was they were doing when they had such a great idea. The ground in which the fruitful plant grows, after all, is just as important as the plant itself.

While you’re writing down your genius idea, also jot down when, where, and, if possible, how the idea came to you. The idea is that over time, a pattern might emerge, one that could help you replicate the circumstances which produced inspiration in the first place. There are a couple of particularly good ways to go about this.

The Double-entry Notebook

A really good way to track not only what you’re thinking about, but how and when you’re thinking about it is using a double-entry notebook. It’s simple enough to create, just take an ordinary notebook and draw a line down the center of the page each time you start a new one. You could also pick up a stenographer’s notebook, which is pre-divided for you.

The idea is that you record your thoughts in the left-hand column, and then, right after that, record any contextual details about the conditions that generated the idea in the column on the right (or vice versa, the side doesn’t really make a difference). Include details like where you are, what you were thinking about before you came up with your idea, what was going on around you, etc.

Database/Spreadsheet

If you’re not so interested in the low-tech method, you could do pretty much the same thing using a database or spreadsheet program on your computer. Plain old Excel (s msft) or Google Docs (s goog) could do just fine, or a more advanced (and better organized) personal database app like Bento for the Mac might be more to your liking.

With something like Bento, you can create custom fields and enter all kinds of information, while keeping your format consistent. You could do the same thing with a custom form in Word, Acrobat or whatever other program you prefer to use. The important thing is that you have a way to capture data that you’re comfortable using, which should make you more likely to actually use it.

Processing the Data

Truth be told, a lot of what you learn using the process probably won’t be useful in the strictest sense. It’ll all be interesting, and you’ll probably learn a thing or two about yourself that will surprise you. But what you will gain from the experience is a number of shining points of overlap, things that you see recurring over and over again whenever you have your best ideas.

At least some of those things should be replicable, which means that you’ll be better able to provide a working situation in which motivation and inspiration will come easily and without much prodding. Basically, you’ll have reverse-engineered your inspiration process, and you’ll have an informed and complete view of how and why you work.

Now that the holiday week has begun to wind down, I can resume further investigation of my speech styles. I have not, however, been waiting idly for the holidays to pass. No, I have been hard at work – talking, talking, and talking some more (all one really needs to explore one’s speech patterns). This seems like the perfect time to socialize and identify my different speech roles.

Not empty-handed, I have kept my iPhone nearby with its voice memo app on near-constant recording-mode. All the involved interlocutors with whom I’ve engaged have of course been notified of my project, and it is not usually until about 15 minutes into our conversations that they tend to forget the recording device and open up to the conversation. So, well I don’t have much to post yet on my blog, I am busy transcribing the hours of different conversations I have stored up on my phone. Wish me good luck as I embark on this tedious task ahead…

Comment:
I played the three pieces through at the beginning again. All three seem to be improving, however, I did get lost again in the middle piece (Chorale Prelude). This bit got extra attention afterwards, particulary as its an easier passage. Sofgeggietto feels like a good warm up piece, “Ich ruf…” like an old friend, only “Wachet…” with its tricky middle section mordants is still a PITA. I have to pay close attention to the tempo, if its too fast it all falls apart in the LH mordants, otherwise it feels OK.

A real fireplace in the home is a wonderful feature, providing a very attractive talking point as we

A real fireplace in the home is a wonderful feature, providing a very attractive talking point as well as a source of heat. But chopping the logs for the fire is much less attractive. Log splitters are a very handy piece of equipment designed to eliminate hours of backbreaking effort that chopping logs requires. Consisting of either a hydraulic or electric-powered rod and piston assembly, the logsplitter is normally rated by the tons of pressure generated. No matter how it is powered, the basic premise is that the logsplitter drives, via a piston, the log onto a stationary blade.

Log splitters are designed to be portable and easily moved. There are several types on the market depending on the size and/or amount of logs that require splitting. Most home log splitters range in pressure from 4 to 6 tonnes, which should prove more than adequate for most purposes here in the UK.

Good log splitters require two handed operation. This reduces the possibility of operator accidents, as when both hands are occupied in running the logsplitter, nothing is going to get caught between the log and splitting blade. Also, the behaviour of the log being split cannot be entirely predicted, so log splitters should require the operator to be at the opposite end to the log being split. If you have people helping to collect the split wood, they should stand clear of the log splitter whilst it is in use.

Maintaining your logsplitter as per the manufacturer’s instructions is important in prolonging the life of your purchase. While the price of logsplitters has fallen, they are still quite an expensive purchase. Cleaning and oiling after use is usually recommended. Accessories are also available for logsplitters; a log splitter table is a good investment as it raises the splitter to waist height to eliminate any further bending.

Comment:
Practiced 3 pieces tonight. They all went very well. The final Bach/Busoni Chorale Prelude was great. I played it through without error first time! This piece is being reviewed this week after a 2-week planned break away and has had 4 previous reviews. It felt very solid and comfortable. I wish I’d been recording it!!!

The first piece Solfeggietto I played through ‘OK’, but with several errors and slips. It has just had a 1-week break. The main problem is taking this piece too fast.

The middle Chorale prelude has just had a 1-day break. I had a memory blackout in the middle, so this piece got extensive work.

Overall I was very pleased and whilst it was quite a long session by my standards it seemed to wiz by and I was able to remain focussed on the study tasks.

The memory blackout in the Train Wreck chorale prelude reaffirms that the decision to put it through the full 1-2-4-memory rule was the correct one.

On Nov 14 & 15, the marine network of Swedish Nature Conservation Association met in Falsterbo, Skåne. The following is the agenda.

Due to all the presentations are swedish, I only got some short sumup from one member.

few notes here after whole event:

1. http://www.lansstyrelsen.se swedish county administration board

2. http://www.sida.se/English/ SIDA : Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

3. COD (torsk in swedish) : It is forbidden to fish in Öresund from 19xx. Till now we find lots of cods in öresrund, but neither north nor south. So prove that decrease of cods are due to fishing.

4. There are some new species of fishes found in öresund, guessing because of temperature raise on water.

It was interesting to meet many people interested in marine protection, as well as seeing many kinds of seals. It was a long walk from beginning of reservated area, till where the seal live. There were two kind of seal, Harbor seal and ….. seal. ( I forgot, only remember one has forehead, the other has round head. They sleep with half body in water.

I am thinking to study a degree, and here are suggestions from people:

KTH :

+ civilingenior is easier to find job in sweden than scientist.

Stockholm University:

+ “you already have engineer degree, it would be nice to get different training, like scientist side.”

There are still lots can be done, but I think the most important so far, is to talk to program to see.

I want to have degree, and in Stockholm, the place all the meetings and seminar takes place on.

Comment:
A review of Solfeggietto after 1-week off and the Bach/Busoni Chorale prelude after 2-weeks away.

It went very well. I could play both through (but with a few stumbles). I created a new taks for Solfeggietto for the final descending arpeggios which need focussed polishing.

There were several wrong notes on each during the initial play throughs, but these were soon polished out.

When practicing the sections for each I used a lot of slow play, this highlighted further memory weaknesses and slips, which were also the polished up a bit.

A promising start to the week.

Tomorrow another Chorale Prelude is added back into the fold.
