As of December 10th of this year, AOL will once again become an independent company, meaning they will no longer be associated with Time Warner. Because of that AOL or soon to be Aol. is re-branding itself. Brand New has a great article on the new Aol. mark. The logo itself is plain and the period at the end doesn’t make much sense (to me at least) but Aol. is relying on the what the mark will sit on for their brand. It kind of reminds me of Bing.com where the landing page is constantly changing, I guess this is a new trend in the world of design, on the web at least, I’m not really sure I like it.
Every design site emphasizes the need to create a memorable, professional logo. So what? Why should

Every design site emphasizes the need to create a memorable, professional logo. So what? Why should any company spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on something so small and simple?

I am writing this post today because I just got a client who recently had a logo developed by one of the sites that gives you several hundred to choose from. I don’t know which site he used, but I do know of a few that get a client, send out the idea to a large group of designers and then receives back a logo from each one, of which he had to pick the one he wanted. The ‘winning’ designer got paid (in my books, only desperate designers work for free, unless they do it for charity). Not one of the designers talked to him.

The logo he chose was both inappropriate and too busy to be useful (memorable, clean, can be used in print and all applications), so he asked me my opinion and what it would cost to recreate it. At the end, he paid more for this first logo than he did for mine (I will show you this logo when I have permission – it does carry his name ).

Here’s the problem. Logo design has nothing to do with artwork. It has nothing to do with design. Yes, you should be a good designer, but that is the result, not the process.

Logos are born of knowledge – if you don’t know your customer, and their business, you have no ability to create the ‘masthead’ of that corporation/company effectively.

Logos are the essence of branding. They are the sales force that speaks when you can’t. The logo tells the world that your company is professional and gives the potential customer some insight as to ‘who’ he is about to deal with. In most cases, the logo has to do all this work and do it well in 7 seconds.

I like to use trucking companies and couriers as examples, because they are so predictable when it comes to corporate identity. If you call on 3 couriers to show up and quote a huge contract, and these three show up: UPS, FedEx and JohnnyFast (made up), and JohnnyFast showed up with spray painted wording on the side of the truck, who do you think would be able to handle your huge contract? What do you think the JohnnyFast guy would look like? Yup, probably. And if JohnnyFast was only a quarter of the price, would you bite?

This is reality. This is one of the reasons so many companies don’t survive. Corporate culture shows up everywhere, and the most visible icon is your logo (or lack of it).

For those in business who are savvy, they also know that a poor logo is the sign of either a business struggling or cheap. No one with any intelligence wants to do business with either.

Clients cannot pick out their own logos (for the most part). In all my years of logo design and thousands of logos, I have had only one client who chose the logo I least preferred. However, when I create a series of 3 to choose from, they are all appropriate just in case they do choose my least favorite.

When good designers get corporate identity work, they spend time speaking with their client. If possible, they go to the company’s headquarters and look around, or to their works yards to watch how the widgets are made. They get inside the company’s head very quickly and feel it out. Knowledge is power in the logo design business.

Why can’t a client design his own? If he’s a designer he can, and he knows his business better than anyone, but only if he can see it from the outside in. This is the catch point – good designers (the one’s with longevity and a track record) can pick up on details a business owner can’t. They can see from the outside what your business is saying to the world. Then they go off and create the logo: the ‘art’ version of all that knowledge running around inside their heads. Good designers will also track your competition in the area, and in the areas you will be doing business in, to ensure you don’t match their look. This often happens when the designer has no contact with the client (in my client’s case, his logo was very similar to another company in the area, but they were not in the same industry). Designers can also help you through the trademark process, and other legal implications of symbols.

When you are attached to your company, it’s difficult to be objective. That increases the chance of choosing inappropriate work when faced with multiple decisions. A good designer only needs to produce 3 logos to choose from. There is little point in having a hundred logos drawn up. One good corporate image is all you need.

Not all logos are the same. Good designers can distinguish between whether your company needs a symbol or a type/symbol combination. This is very important. Many businesses cannot use single symbol logos effectively. I’ll write another long post about this later, as I feel it’s one of the more important aspects to logo design.

Really good designers know specific symbolism as it pertains to other cultures, like what a line through type means in China. This happened to Stothert Engineering in the early 80’s. They went far away to get their logo done, for $120,000. It was clean and simple, with a small line that went right through the type. Problem is, their Asian clientele freaked. It was the sign of death. Not only did they have to take the line out, but had to redo all their stationery, signage….

When having a logo designed, it’s important to consider application – where will it be used? Vehicles? Stationery? Signage? Print advertising? Will that logo work well in all applications? How will the designer know if you never speak to him/her? I have a rule with my work: it must look great in black and white. Only exception is a web-based business that will never venture out from being online. This is one reason this site shows a number of logos in black and white. It’s an old rule that many people have left by the wayside with the invention of the computer and the onslaught of desktop publishers.

Another advantage of using a designer – they can ‘marry’ your new logo into other work seamlessly. They built it – they know it.

Hopefully some day my client will let me showcase this little disaster. Just for the record, many companies have done very well by web based logo companies, especially the ones that hire professional designers. This post is just the ‘devil’s advocate’ so you know, when it’s time to have your corporate image rebuilt, what the options are, and what you need to be aware of so you don’t pay twice.

Good designers can cost less in the long run.

Have you ever wanted to add your Company logo or even your signature to your dwg files without having to attach files? This can seem like a long process but once you have the files and have done one, it gets much easier the next time around.

What you will need to download and install (in addition to Autocad)

GSview (Latest Version)

GhostScript8.70 (Need version 8.70 or newer to run on Windows7) GhostScript 8.64 (Windows XP )

PStoEdit (Latest Version)

Steps

1. Choose your Logo or Signature file (Preferably a jpeg/gif/tiff)

2. Goto the Vector Magic web site and scan in your image.

A. Create account to access additional save as file names

B. Save as .EPS file

3. Open GSView Program

A. Go to the EDIT Tab, then select Convert to vector format..

B. Once the dialog box opens, search and select the .EPS file you just created,

C. Under the Format, Choose Dxf: CAD exchanged format, then select Ok

D. In the Save as Dialog, choose where you want to save the file, name the file followed by .dxf

example: logo.dxf

4. Open Autocad

A. Open .dxf file then save as .dwg file

B. Open the .dwg file, from there you can hatch line work, add colors and/or create blocks.

(Its good practice to copy and paste the content into your typical dwg files, that way you have all of your normal standards)

The new AOL logo's. Anybody know what is going on with the bottom middle one?

Beleagured internet company AOL has unveiled a new logo as it looks to revive its fortunes ahead of their spinoff from Time Warner.

The new logo’s, which now show the name ‘Aol.’ on a multitude of different background images, have been designed by global brand and innovation company Wolff Olins, but have so far received a mixed reception. Whilst Tim Armstrong, chairman and chief executive of AOL, claimed that the new logo’s are “uniquely dynamic”, plenty of others in the design industry have had less encouraging words to say about the new designs:

Florian Schmitt of the London based design agency Hi-Res!: “I like the idea of changing and adaptive logos, but this is such a literal and clichéed attempt at it. I happen to know that they had very little time to finish this, but even so, this is poor. It’s literally the first thing you would do as a moodboard and the first thing you would put in the trash as well.”

Om Malik of technology site GigaOM: “It is ambiguous at best, and as sexy as the obese, shapeless humans living on Axiom, the flagship of the BnL fleet in Pixar movie ‘WALL-E.’”

Duncan Riley of the news site inquisitr about the ever changing images: “…if you think that sounds like drugs at play, you’re not the only one thinking that.”

Oliver Reichnestein, creative director of Tokyo based design agency Information Architects Inc.: “Radical identity changes usually suggest that there is something wrong with the company. Well, we all know what’s wrong with AOL. Their original business (Internet access) is obsolete. Dropping all visual keys and forcing the logo to a negative appearance on random images surely is a drastic measure. If the goal of the redesign was to illustrate how the company is slowly vanishing from the fast changing digital surface of the planet, I’d say: Job well done.”

One thing is for certain – the new designs have certainly got millions of people talking about AOL accross the globe. And perhaps that was half of the idea; think back a few years, to the last time a new logo was launched for a major brand that got people talking as much as this has. London 2012 anyone?

Another logo design that caused a major stir

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which agency came up with that particular logo – Wolff Olins again!

So maybe they have been clever here, and designed a logo with the principal idea of getting people to talk about the brand? Or maybe they are just rubbish at designing logo’s!? Or, maybe I and the thousands of others who are unsure about the new logo’s are just really bad judges?

What do you think?

……………………..

Hello-Hello and welcome to a Monday!

We begin with a tale about Tiffany; this time it is the story of the luxury retailer’s lawsuit against its landlord in Century City (California). It seems the jeweler is making it ever-so-clear they do not want fast-fashion merchandiser H&M as a neighbor. (As in H&M that just did the wildly popular ‘Jimmy Choo for H&M’ line, described in this post.)

Apparently Tiffany believes having H&M as a neighbor would be just this side of apocalyptic; the LA Times has more:

“H&M is not a luxury or upscale retailer. H&M is at best characterized as a ‘popular-price’ mass merchandise clothing retailer.”

“The location of the H&M store will cause irreparable injury to Tiffany’s business reputation as a luxury retailer, a reputation that Tiffany has enjoyed and worked hard to maintain for more than a century and a half,” the lawsuit said.”

While understanding a brand’s desire to protect its caché, the story points out that in Pasadena the two stores are almost next door to each other. Other stories on the topic wonder about Tiffany’s efforts to embrace the ‘aspirational shopper,’ those coveting upscale brands while also shopping mass retailers like H&M.

Courtesy Tiffany

Many such consumers are precisely the same customers fond of merchandise displaying a retailer’s logo, something Tiffany has marketed strongly the last several years.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. We do want to note this is not ‘new news,’ as we are wont to say; the original story broke in September and yours truly keeps forgetting to post it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few more retail notes today, including word on the next two accessories designers for Targèt; the Cynthia Vincent for Target collection will launch at Target stores nationwide and at Target.com from April 18, available through through July 1. Below, several styles from Ms. Vincent’s Fall 09 Collection.

Also, headwear from Eugenia Kim will debut next year, it is going to be the first hat launch in Target’s series of limited-time-only accessories. The Eugenia Kim for Target collection debuts April 18, running through June 20. Below, looks from the 2008 Eugenia Kim line.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is also news that Forever 21 has launched its love and beauty cosmetic line.

Everything in the new line is priced at $10 or less; it all appears to be available online.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Before delving headfirst into our next topic it is time we are honest with our cherished readers; we do not participate in Black Friday. It is really not our cup of tea; additionally, we are always blessed by a visit from The Queen Mother for Thanksgiving, precluding any chance to partake of the mayhem. Such a shame. (Cough-cough.)

We still desire to maintain contributions to the PPP (Pocketbook Protection Program), continuing efforts at providing a list of fiscally friendly locales for the upcoming frenzy.

To be fair, there are far too many special markdowns, discounts and promotions to accurately track; we are including those we believe to be of the most interest to our bloggy friends.

Google story is quite short, but fascinating. In a very short time Google grew from just being a name to a business empire.

Search this site: http://www.google-logos.com/ where you can look at some official and non official Google logos. I’ve chosen these three.

Now it is you turn, which one would you choose?

Why don’t you think of a good logo for our blog?

Who knows maybe we’ll end up being as famous as Google in no time!

These last weeks we have been talking about how our city has changed throughout time. Some buildings in Palma, for instance, date back long ago, don’t they? Some of you were surprised to find out how old or the cathedral was. The construction of the cathedral of Palma took 10 generations of people to be completed.

Today we’ll look at how fast new technologies grow. Think of Google, it was born almost at the same time as you. If you look at it from that perspective, it is not such a big deal. You have also grown a lot, haven’t you?

What kind of applications from Google do you use?
