Howdy! After a nice 13 hour nap from our weekend in New York City I am ready to be semi productive! MAJOR Special thanks to Social Hero for getting us the bill at Ace of Clubs and for putting us up for the night!

It’s been no secret that we are preparing to hole ourselves up for a good part of the winter to get into writing. On our way back home from the Big Apple we decided to get a head start on our next single. The video below will give you a taste of the new direction we are heading in. C’est une note tirée de PSFK qui inspire ce post. Un chercheur travaille actuellement pour Lego afin de comprendre et analyser la manière dont les enfants nomment les briques multicolores. Il apparait en effet que dans chaque foyer propriétaire de Lego, les joueurs inventent un argot facilitant l’appellation de chaque brique, notamment lorsque les constructions sont collectives.

Cette pratique est une des nombreuses illustrations des jargons propres aux communautés : métiers, classes sociales, musiciens, etc. En linguistique, on les appelle des langages vernaculaires. A l’origine, cet adjectif qualifie les caractéristiques propres à un pays ou un groupe de personnes. In extenso, il recouvre également les dérivations de langage utilisées par des catégories de personnes.

Dans le fond, le langage vernaculaire observe un avantage majeur : il joue le rôle de ciment communautaire. Il permet d’identifier ses utilisateurs : untel est charpentier, untel est breton, untel est emo, untel est un nerd…

La capacité des briques Lego a créé du langage vernaculaire est évidemment intéressante, il y a peu de marques qui génèrent un tel effort intellectuel. Certaines parviennent bien à intégrer des gimmicks langagiers dans la vie de tous les jours (“la vie est une question de priorité, “what else?”, etc.) mais peu induisent la création non imposée d’un jargon vernaculaire, clef d’entrée cruciale à la dimension communautaire d’une marque.

Pour la blague, on peut évoquer le klingon, la langue de Star Trek, dont il existe quelques locuteurs fans (quelques uns ont même essayé de l’inculquer naturellement à leurs enfants ou en faire des pubs…).

Pour terminer, il est difficile de passer à côté du langage vernaculaire geek (cf. image d’en-tête), mix d’anglais et de SMS mélangé à la sauce gaming. En voici une sélection de choix :

I came across these videos and they made me a laugh a lot.  Now since It’s already November and kind of dark and gloomy, I thought it would be cool If I helped us all prepare for the upcoming Winter blues.  So here are 5 videos that I hope will make you laugh and if they don’t then I’m sorry you must have a serious case of SAD and maybe you should watch Tom and Jerry!  And if you have already watched them, then check them out again because you know they’ll be super hilarious the second time around!

My tea for the moment: I wanted to spice things up a little bit so I decided to try STASH’s premium Chai White Tea.  It’s a little stronger than the usual White tea but it smells like hmm… Christmas for some reason.  I do not kid, just try it and tell me if you feel the same.  It must be all that cinnamon, allspice and cardamom mixture!

Meagan and I both agree, our recent home improvement landscaping project is not professional quality, but as a first try it’s pretty good. There are definitely things we would do differently, like adding edging or building up the base more.

Including the shovel, axe, tamper, brick pavers, paver base, paver sand, sandstone, mulch, flowers, potting soil, and patio furniture we spent around $500 (and many, many hours of labor).

Not sure if everyone else has been noticing this but a lot of devs have been developing lists of their favorite tools. While I’m not calling myself a “famous dev”, I do think that I’ll join in party!

ClipX – Clipboard Manager

Seriously, this tool ranks as one of my favorites – it’s such an amazingly useful concept executed with simplicity and elegant… or something like that. Basically, Copy as much as you want and even use your Paste command like you normally would. But if you need something from your history press Shift+Paste and BAM! A list of previously copied text and images – Awesome!

Notepad++ – Simple, Clean, Excellent

The classic Windows Notepad has served us well but all things must pass. Notepad++ is actually a bit of a misnomer if they are trying to describe how much better it is compared to regular Notepad. It should be something like Notepad+x42, but you get the idea anyways.

One of the reasons why this Notepad sets itself apart from others is it’s Word Completion “intellisense” – basically it uses the words already in your document for the auto-complete text, which is surprisingly useful!

Expresso – Makes Me Think Of Coffee

There is probably thousands of Regular Expression tools out on the web that people all love – my personal choice has always been Expresso. I’m not sure if its the tools, that its free or a sub-conscious choice since I like coffee so much. Regardless, Expresso has been in my toolkit for a long time now and until someone else comes up with another coffee flavored named version, I’m sticking with it.

RocketDock- My Personal Apple Indulgence

Yeah, this looks like the application launcher for the enemy but it is still one of my favorite ways to get access to my most commonly used applications. Windows 7 might change my mind but for now this is hard to beat. You can even download additional plug-ins that can create the same “fan” style folder list! Awesome!

Like most tools, there are a lot of other options out there, but RocketDock is the only one that consistently placed the window focus on programs I launched, which was pretty much the most important part of the whole thing for me.

.NET Reflector – Pure AWESOME

I’m shocked when I encounter a developer that hasn’t heard of Reflector – but then again all of us, at one point or another, never knew about it. Even though you probably know all about it I’m going to list it just in case. If you ever need to see what the source of compiled .NET code looks like this is the tool.

jLinq- Personal Plug

It’s like LINQ with your JSON data! Brilliant! Someone needs to get this guy a raise! In all seriousness if you’re going to be doing a lot of work with JSON data, especially large arrays of records, then jLinq will go a long way to help you keep your code short and clear!

n52te – Bonus Hardware Section

If you like gaming then you might want to check this out – the n52te. It is hard to see how I used to play games in the past before this came along. When I get this thing configured I can do 66+ commands reliably all with my left hand! Your keyboard certainly can’t do it!

I also use this thing for work from time to time, interestingly enough. For example, I have a separate configuration for using Blender (3D modeling program) that makes it easier to navigate the application. (I’m not good at 3D modeling, just something I do for fun)

In fact this is my second time buying this – I used to own its baby brother – until he died (granted it took a lot of abuse before it did).

You may have come here today looking for .NET programming related content… sorry… But how about a .NET related LOL-Cat?

I am now the “Bringer of the Doom that is Fantasy LOL Speak”. Yes, I’ve done something irreversible to the Fifthwind Forum. And while it hasn’t had a huge burst of activity other than at the beginning (yet), it did set a record of the most people ever on the forum at the same time (21). So, I think that is worth the trauma that it might have inflicted on some of our more venerable patrons (*cough*Fifthwind*cough*). As Mornara said, though, we do need to remind everyone that we moderators aren’t tame little beings every now and then. So, while I sit her grinning impishly and think of more LOL phrases (Princess: I iz sittin in da towah, lookin all pretties. Iz mah only function.) I suppose I should relate something of only marginally more importance.

I got out of going with my father and my Nana to the hospital. I honestly did have things that I was going to do today. Like finish some of the cleaning that I started yesterday. And try to write that story for Creative Writing today. I have to say, I did succeed in the cleaning part. There is now no more of the drawer junk on my floor (most of what was on the floor either disappeared back into the appropriate drawer, or came downstairs. The floor in my room now looks a lot cleaner, so yay for that! I still have a lot more to do before I leave, but at least that and the hanging up of clothing is taken care of.

Did I mention it’s been a little too long since I’ve gone through those drawers? Yeah, I found night gowns that I haven’t worn since I basically moved into the house. To give you an idea, the sleeves are more than six inches too short, and what used to be full length nightgowns barely come to my knees. All of the clothing I can no longer fit into will be donated to the local thrift store. I hope some little girl out there will like those things as much as I did at that age!

The other thing that happened this morning was that I figured out what I’m going to do with the yet to be named short story for my creative writing class. Now I just have to convince myself to write the darn thing. Part of the problem with this is that the teacher wants the assignment written in the present tense, and I really, really hate the present tense. I’ll probably end up writing two versions of the thing, one in present tense, one in past tense. Or maybe not. Anyways, when I’m finished with the first draft, I’ll put it up on the forum under Kuro’s Assignments and you all can be the judge. The Great Chicken Flood is already up there.

After that story is written, I have two things to edit before I can get to work on Goodnight Earth again, so it looks like I’ll be getting a fresh look at that story the next time I see it after all.

Remember, trauma to others can be funny when delivered in small doses. Making it a hobby doubles the fun.

Have you ever been scanning pictures anywhere on the internet and come across a picture of a cat with some sort of badly spelled sentence on it? Weird, I know, but if you have, you’ve just stumbled across an infamous LOL cat.

I’m sure many people have seen countless LOL cats, or maybe have even been to the  LOL cat website, I Can Has Cheezburger. The site features daily updates of new and improved LOL cat pictures. Some are posted, while others are created right there on the site. (That’s the cool part — you can take a regular old picture of a cat right off the site, and then put it through the LOL cat builder to make your own picture. I’ve done it. Don’t judge me.)

This is one of my all time favorites.

When it comes down to it, LOL cats are funny. They entertain us. They make us laugh. They can even pick you up when you’re feeling down. But the real question is — Should we consider an LOL cat a form of art?

You could argue yes. There is quite the creative process happening with each picture. Not only do we rely on the photographer to provide us with something hilarious, but we also must then come up with some sort of witty caption…and include horrible grammar, of course.

You could also argue no. You could say it’s just another ludicrous thing we have created to entertain ourselves out of boredom. Some people, and I won’t judge too harshly here, have taken the LOL cat a little too far. I was curiously interested to find out that some of these people have taken the time to translate the entire bible into LOL cat speak. (That’s the horrible spelling language on all the pictures.) If you really want to go that far, check it out.

But, not to get off topic. Do you think LOLz are a modern form of art? What’s your favorite LOL cat? You can tell me. I won’t judge you.

Toys always seem to know just where to place themselves so that you step on them with bare feet.  OUCH!  Don’t try and tell me that toys don’t come alive and move around when humans are sleeping.  I know they do.
