El Podcast Nº 1, les hablamos de, un niño Italiano, con aparente complejo de guerrero callejero, salio a la calle nada más y nada menos que vestido de… Ken? De Street Figther. Venezuela is considering a ban on “violent” video games and toys.  A law in Venezuela’s National Assembly would ban the “manufacture, importation, distribution, sales and use of violent video games and bellicose toys.”

Before I get into that though, I just want to point out that I cringed when I read that lead in the story I linked to, but it was the original AP story with some actual reporting in it, and not just another blog post, so it goes up anyway.

OK, back to Venezuela.

Officials are saying this ban is in an effort to combat violent crime in the South American country, and they have a point.  As the story states, Venezuela has a population about the size of Texas, but more than five times as many murders.

This just seems like an attempt by the Venezuelan government attempting to deflect some of the criticism over their failure to effectively combat the country’s problems with crime.

As bad as this assault on freedom of speech is, it really shouldn’t surprise anyone.  Hugo Chavez (pictured above) and his administration have been on a roll recently as far as issuing sweeping bans that have little to do with any actual problem.  They recently banned Coke Zero citing health concerns, but wouldn’t specify which health concerns.

Also, as some of you might have heard, they recently banned the airing of animated show Family Guy, and threatened to fine any broadcaster that does so.  They’re argument for the ban on Family Guy was that in a recent episode Brian started a campaign to legalize marijuana.

So, be glad you live in a country with something as strong as the U.S.’s first amendment.  The worst we get is the Governator trying (and failing) to restrict their sales to minors.

Thanks to the readers who have commented and shown their support. I still feel kind of stupid for being this upset over a cat, but apparently it’s normal. Oddly, ever since he received a subcutaneous fluid injection and we put him on Prednisone, Old Cat is actually doing better than before his diagnosis. Thus, my emotional state is pretty confused right now. He has cancer, he’s going to die…aaand he’s eating again and moving around more? What the hell? Anyway, I am going to try and resume normal posting–if things worth writing about happen, that is.

My cold has cleared up, school has started, and I have finally scheduled my driving test (yes, I’m way behind the curve). Aside from the inevitable dead cat, things are hopefully going to get better soon. But with my luck, I’ll just end up with swine flu come October/November. Hooray for pessimism.

Just got done watching Battle Skipper which is an old moe OVA from the mid 90s. It’s average and nothing worth noting, but I found this line to be totally hilarious for the time period it was made in and how nothing has really changed. Oh Japan, I don’t see this happening at all for you.

1) The customers are much friendlier. Sure, we’ve got the rushed lunch hour crowd, but everyone else is extremely laid back. Maybe it’s because they’re all regulars, maybe they’re just less tired and cranky, or maybe lunch is simply a less serious affair than dinner. Whatever the reason, they’ll all happily sit at the counter and chat with complete strangers. And carryout customers seem to have a greater tendency to tip!

2) I usually have something to do. Lately, nighttime carryout has been nonexistent. But during the day, more people are willing to take their food with them. Even if I don’t have a lot of carryout, in-house customers come up to the register at regular intervals, or the phone yields people inquiring as to the specials. A whole lot less staring into space (newspapers, books, and crossword puzzles have all been banned). An added bonus: if carryout dies, I get to go home early.

3) My boss’s slightly hilarious “conversations” in the kitchen. I don’t get involved, I just listen to him rant. Today the topics ranged from the evils of technology (“Kids only think they need this stuff because society forces them to use it; we got by just fine without it…”) to…a possible Jewish black market organ-harvesting conspiracy? Something about a rabbi being involved in selling kidneys and livers. And no, I do not support his bizarre Antisemitic viewpoints, nor does anyone else I work with. I just find it highly entertaining, the way he so often combines urban legends, conspiracy theories and his own prejudices into some of the most fantastical bullshit I’ve ever heard in my life.

Unfortunately, school will start again soon and I won’t be able to work during the day anymore.

I’m wondering why one of my top searches is “girl-girl- action.” Seriously, what were you guys expecting to find here? Videos of me and a septuagenarian lady customer getting it on atop the candy counter? Because I promise you, that’s something you wouldn’t want to see.

Incidentally, I get it on by old men all the time. This further cements my notion that I would have been a hottie in the ’30s.

After last post’s take-down of “I Love Sucking Dick” feminism, I turn now to one feminist community that occasionally has Crowning Moments of Awesome, but is mostly full of fail: Feministing.

This, I think, stems from the site’s reputation as “feminism-lite”. I really can’t remember the last time that I’ve seen theory or anything approaching cerebral posted there. Understandably, the feministing commenters and contributors are confused. They ask such pressing feminist questions as, “can I read US News?” or, “how do I find environmentally-friendly mascara?” It’s feminism without substance or anything revolutionary. Postpostfeminism. We’ve apparently defeated racism, rape, the vast majority of humanity that suffers in poverty, homophobia, hate crimes, and all kinds of violence against women. Now we can talk about Obama and makeup.

So, how is Feministing full of shit? Ideally, I’d like to do a meta-analysis. But, hey, it’s a lot harder to do that blog-format, especially when I’m not getting paid or getting a grade for it. So I treat you to specific examples of the usual tripe that is posted there, with my witty take-downs.

First case: Jon and Kate, Plus Millions of Female Tabloid Readers. This post is about the divorce of former white-picket-fence heterosexual baby machines and reinforcers of patriarchal norms, Kate and John Gosslin. It’s also about women who read about the divorce, and how they are Bad Stupid Women. In short, this is a post about how certain kinds of feminists are totally better people and women in general than other stupid women. We’re good women, you’re not. How do we know this? Why, we read a post at Forbes—that bastion of feminist theory and unbiased reporting—that claims that women are responsible for this divorce because of our silly womanly rubbernecking and gossip, and vast consumption of tabloids.

So, the poster argues, stop buying tabloids! You’re to blame. Blah blah blah. You’re not really interested in her point, because it’s something you could easily read on an MRA site about how we’re all superficial bitches with crazy-making vaginas. It is funny to note that instead of going, “there’s a major news source blaming family troubles on women… doesn’t that sound familiar?” we’re going to say OH GOLLY GEE they totally have a point. We are, in fact silly bitches responsible for everything in the world, especially the content of tabloids. But not me, you understand, because I am a Good Woman, and you are not.

This vision of a Good Woman, in fact, doesn’t buy tabloids at airport kiosks (that’s the words she uses, “airport kiosks”). She instead buys Forbes, so she can be a good upper-class white woman and know everything there is to now about sociopaths pretending money makes their dick bigger finances and economics. She does this in an airport, because she’s so rich and shit and therefore flies often enough that her choice of airplane reading is, in fact, very dire indeed. Also, we all know that only women gossip about celebrities, and that if you ask any man out there they will have no idea who Kate Gosslin is, let alone have an opinion of her. We also know that women, in fact, are the editors and contributers and owners of every single tabloid, and that via vagina-hive-mind, we secretly collude at night about how purple is the new pink is the new black and what direction we will take the media—which we own and operate by ourselves—tomorrow.

Also, my reading of this article is totally accurate and shit, because down the thread you will notice that the commenters are trying to establish who is a Better Woman by comparing their choice of tabloids and television shows. Oh, the post patriarchy. How trivial are your concerns! Now that we have not dismantled the real hierarchies in which women are shamed, killed, and abused, we can invent new hierarchies to shame women!

Second Case: Why is it called “Feminism” if it’s supposed to fight all forms of inequality? The author wants to know how to make men think that the idea that women are equal to them isn’t bat-shit crazy. My advice would probably be unwanted: if a man thinks that he is a superior form of humanity, and therefore, that your feminism must be about him, for him, and by him before he gives a shit, he is a sad sack of dumbass and not worthy of the calories expended to acknowledge his existence. Also, it’s called “feminism” because we’re not fighting for men’s rights. Men’s rights, apparently, include not paying child support and forcing women to have abortions, so you can kindly shut the fuck up about men’s rights. I answered your questions, Men Who Don’t Get That Feminism Isn’t About Them, now go do your own research and learn to fail quietly, alone, where I don’t have to hear you.

Third Case; Post-feminism femme fatales. The author establishes that these aforementioned stunning examples of anti-feminism, class priviledge, and heteronormativity—as she imagines them—are “enchantress of the highest order, in all political, social, environmental and economic arenas” and “anticipating the ultimate passage of an Equal Rights Amendment, but in the meantime, busy chipping away at professional restrictions in our own spirited way”. This spirited way includes not burning the bra they paid at least $100 dollars for, which they will take off for men depending on their mood.

This case is about an obvious a case of I Suck Dick and It’s Fucking Awesome Feminism that one could hope to have. It’s so dumb, I thought it was satire. Oh, and if you think that agitating, angrily, because you have zero civil rights at a federal level makes someone a Bad Woman, have a big piece of shut the fuck up.

I’d post more cases, but all this is starting to make me slightly nauseous. Granted, the Feministing mainpage, devoted mostly to news (sans the comments, which are mostly full of fail), is more sanitary than the Community posts, which are typically full of “how do I make men like my feminism?” and “I like sucking dick” type posts. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Feminism is apparently all about men, and their dicks. Really. I learned it on the internet.

Why am I picking on Feministing? First, they’re a big popular site, my pissing and moaning isn’t going to hurt their hits in the least. Also, it’s because I’m working up my courage to eventually address the blog that led to the last post by taking down a trend I’ve witnessed on feminist blogs for a long time. This trend is alienating as shit to my queer not upper-middle-class ass, making online feminism more an exercise of searching for a non-dumbass in the rough than a happy fun time with friendsies.

South Park is my guilty pleasure. I remember turning the volume down really low at night so that I could watch it without my parents hearing. It was so deliciously foul—and it horrified my parents. What wasn’t to like?

Recent episodes have rekindled that warm feeling that deliberately foul and excessive toilet humor inspires. I thought that it really couldn’t get much better than when they parodied the bailout by turning the Treasury Department into a gaggle of idiots.

I suppose I was wrong.

For April 1, South Park released it’s newest episode, “Eat, Pray, Queef”. Which is exactly what it sounds like: 30 minutes of jokes about the sound air makes when it is expelled from a woman’s vagina.

In the episode, the men of South Park overreact to the queef, and the women in their lives that find it funny. Culminating in a Senate hearing in which a female senator queefs a monologue to Roadwarrior, the funniest part of the show was how my brother, who watched it with me, didn’t think queefing was as funny as I did.  It made him a tad uncomfortable.

Most astounding though, By the end, when the men ban queefing, one of the female characters has a monologue that is undoubtedly the most feminist thing I’ve ever heard on television, bar none. My jaw literally dropped. It wasn’t tongue-in-cheek, it didn’t reference bra-burning or any of the other anti-feminist bullshit memes.

Even more hilarious is how disturbed by the episode fans are on IMDb and elsewhere. I came across numerous posts about how queefs are “disgusting” (but apparently a talking piece of shit isn’t) and how vaginas are gross and look like “gun shot wounds”. Rather than just say that they didn’t like the episode though, numerous viewers gave it a 0/10 when asked. Me thinks this might be because they’re just mad that South Park pulled off a joke at their expense. I have to say, the reaction of people to this episode is even funnier than the episode itself. When pushed, the commentors will eventually resort to excuses such as “vaginas are gross” or “feminism is stupid”. Excuse me, wasn’t the point of satire to laugh at yourself? After being bogged down by the minuta of the bailout, an episode on how stupid it all was made me laugh at myself for taking it so seriously. Would it fucking kill people to laugh at themselves instead of other people? Apparently not. Which is extremely funny in a very dark way.

All in all, South Park still isn’t outwardly feminist, and still does have its problems (jokes about rape anyone?), but it was still the most feminist thing I’ve seen on television, for a general audience, ever. How sad is that? Even sadder, how many men are complaining on the IMDb boards about their butthurt that sexism isn’t funny? Way to get a joke, morons.

Setting aside my issues with gendered nouns and adjectives and the use of the male plural to describe a group of mixed genders, I really love French.

Why, do you ask?

My French composition course this week had a lesson about l’injustice dans la société [injustices in society]. I have an essay about injustices due this weekend (note: writing essays in another language is really difficult. Thus, I procrastinate until the last second).

On the list of vocabulaire utile [useful vocabulary] provided by my professor is the following:

le sexisme (un[e] phallocrate)

That’s right, the French word for someone who is a “male chauvinist (pig),” or has sexisme [sexism], is un phallocrate.

I knew I picked the right language to study. Expect later posts referencing phallocrats.

Here’s a little piece of unsolicited advice from me to you:

When you’re living on the third floor of a 3-floor apartment building, and therefore keeping your heating turned off to save on money (the heat rising from below is sustainable), shut the bathroom door while you’re taking a shower.  It will save you from a very, very painful exit from the shower when you’re finished.  I learned this about 10 minutes ago.  Yowza.

At any rate, allow me the privilege of inviting everyone to a vicarious journey (a la, me) into the life of a computational biology graduate student, late February of his first year.

Background

I’m living in Shadyside, roughly 30 minutes’ walk door to door (25 if I hurry).  There are numerous coffee shops within a 10-minute radius that frequently see my business, as the apartment itself isn’t overly conducive to productivity.  Something about the “bed” and “couch” and “overpowered desktop computer” that are insanely distracting…

[ASIDE: On the note of the desktop, you may recall from a previous post that I was having processor issues.  Intel was extremely helpful in this regard, prepping a replacement under the 3-year warranty, which will ship once they receive my defective unit.  This process will take at least a few weeks, so for the time being, Ronon (my desktop's designation) is out of commission, and V² (my laptop's designation) is taking the helm.]

I am enrolled in three classes this semester: 03-710 Computational Biology (henceforth referred to here as “710″), 03-711 Computational Molecular Biology and Genomics (aka “711″), and 10-601 Machine Learning (duly dubbed “601″).  Each course has two 90-minute lectures each week, and two of the three courses have one 50-minute recitation each week.  Doing the math, that’s 11 hours of class each week.  I squeeze daily workouts into the mornings, leaving the afternoons free to conduct my studies.

Clear as mud? Excellent!

Previously

Excluding this week only, I spent the previous three weeks coding Java and C++ programs for 601 and 710, respectively.  The former was for our third homework assignment, a detailed exploration of Logistic Regression for classifying variables with continuous-valued properties (as opposed to discrete properties that take on one of a few known values), as compared to the Naive Bayes approach (LR is more powerful but more complex; NB is less complex, but may sacrifice accuracy).  The latter was an incredibly intricate implementation of generating hidden markov models from known protein or DNA sequences in order to classify unknown sequences.

Both these assignments were completed and submitted late last week, and other than the weekly Wednesday quiz in 711, this week invovled no deadlines.  As any graduate student should be well aware, a lack of deadlines now can only equate to a deluge of deadlines later.

Which, of course, I discovered not-so-gently on Monday.  The exchange went something like this:

Professor: “When does everyone want to have the midterm next week?“
Me: “…wut.“
Professor: “Monday or Wednesday?“
Me: “Um, Wednesday please.” (I want more study time)
Fellow Student: “Dude, we have a Machine Learning midterm on Wednesday.“
Me: “…WUT. Ok, I change my vote to Monday.“
…
Me: “Crap, we have two midterms next week?“
Fellow Student: “And a 710 midterm on Thursday.“
Me: “…WUT!“

Currently

That brings me to the present hour.  Let me go over in detail what exactly my to-do list entails for the next week.

In 601: Midterm next Wednesday, but not mentioned thus far is the fourth homework assignment that is due on Monday.  This assignment covers Bayesian Networks – inference, D-separation, as well as structured learning and parameter estimation.  Once that is turned in, we’ll have a review session covering everything we’ve discussed so far, from mutual information and decision trees to naive bayes and logistic regression to maximum likelihood estimation and bayesian networks.  The midterm is open book and open notes, but given the exam is 90 minutes and covers a vast repertoire of information, it would academic suicide to believe one could flip through notes looking for answers during that time.

In 710: This is what I would consider my most solid position (for the moment, anyway).  I have done very well with the programming assignments thus far as well as the quizzes.  Nevertheless, I am quite sure that the exam will take every opportunity to delve more deeply into the theory behind markov models and dynamic programming than any homework or quiz has thus far.  Particularly on HMMs, we got off easy in terms of the probabilistic theories that power the concept.  Hopefully, studying will mostly consist of brushing up on weak spots.  No news yet as to whether this exam is open or closed book.

In 711: I don’t know what to expect here.  It probably has somewhat to do with the fact that this is my professor’s first course since receiving her PhD from Stanford, and while obviously brilliant, she has tended to rely on us for feedback on the progression of the course; she’s learning as much as we are.  We’ve had weekly quizzes which, I feel, have also been less intense on the theory than they could have been.  Thankfully, there has been a ton of overlap with this course and my other two, so similar concepts like Bayesian Networks, Hidden Markov Models, Expectation-Maximization, and Dynamic Programming will be reinforced, allowing me to focus more exclusively on sequencing technologies, Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium theories, linkage disequilibrium, and haplotype inference.

What to do?

I am off to go complete a write-up for 711 notes I took last week (it is a course requirement that each student types up two lectures’ worth of notes to be posted on the website) before my 710 lecture begins for today.  After that, I have my weekly 601 recitation, which will be followed by a lovely dinner of homemade chili (made it last night from scratch, and it was DELICIOUS) while foraying into 601.  Then tomorrow begins anew with 710 recitation in tandem with lots and lots of additional studying.

What’s that?  It’s going to be Friday tomorrow, you say?  What about going out, you say?  First let me remind you, in case you haven’t figured it out by now (or are new to my blog) – I’m not exactly what you’d call a “stereotypical student”.  Hardcore partying never has been – and I seriously doubt ever will be – part of who I am.  But that little detail aside, I’m a graduate student, and Fridays are just another day in the 8-days-a-week graduate student work week.

And in the meantime, I invite you all to watch this 40-second video of a cat getting pwned by a rabbit.  It reminds me a lot of my own cat (a black and multi-digited bundle of love named Salem) who likes to take up residence in the crate of one of my dogs (a charming and adorable nuisance of a chocolate lab named Darby).  Darby, unlike the rabbit in this video, will never force Salem out, and will in fact scootch to the farthest corner of the crate so Salem has room to stretch out.  Though the pictures I have of the two of them sleeping in the crate are truly priceless.
