So while riding the bus home the other day I wrote this really long winded post about how, basically, how great the iPhone is.

The idea was inspired by OneBusAway, and I felt I had to give my life story on the evolution of the cell phone as it related to my use.

However, CatPaint ($0.99, Apple App Store) if I had existed yesterday, could have summed up how awesome the iPhone and the app experience truly is with a few photos.

This is up there with the Black Jack taco for best $0.99 purchase this year.

I take a little time out from my household projects to note this remarkable convergence of two of my passions — cats and computers.

I especially like the line about “progenitor of a race of robo-cats”. If they’re going to the trouble of denying it, you know some evil genius must have suggested it.

This would be a good occasion to develop a new programming language just for this simulation. “LOLcat” could notify us of syntax errors by saying “Ur doin’ it wrong”. It could literally jump to a subroutine, sometimes with comical results. “Dumping core” could be described as “coughing up a hairball”.

The happy curmudgeon, Jim West, commented on the rather shocking price of a recent book. $590.00 list price from Brill for a 2000 page for a new etymological Greek dictionary from Brill (who else?). My own tome from last year is around $100.00 (from Ashgate), so its price per page is even higher but since it doesn’t have have a picture of me in it it is probably worth it.

But here is a deal. My friend Tom Robinson (whose own recent book of Ignatius of Antioch goes for a rather modest sum from Hendrickson) is also the author of a self published little volume that was something of hobby project for the past few years with a small entry on a related issue.

While working on a different project that required snooping through hundreds and thousands of pages of old newspapers, Tom noticed how often newspapers a hundred years ago and so reported on issues that are strikingly up to date. Here is one (p. 79) from THE DAILY GAZETTE AND BULLETIN from Jan. 27, 1877

New Editions of Textbooks Too Frequent.

Mr. Mitchell has introduced a bill into the legislature to prevent changes in school books more than once in six years. No measure of relief will be hailed with more satisfaction than a law of this kind, so that the constant changing of school books has become one of the most annoying evils that a patient people have to endure without any benefit except to gratify the whims of teachers and put money in the pockets of rival publishers.

Fads in Education

Our public schools stand in danger of being invaded by another fad. they have suffered from various fads in the past and will likely do so again in the future. It seems one of the weaknesses inherent in human nature to adopt readily whatever is new or novel or catchy, no matter whether it is reasonable or not. I made it back from New Orleans with all my luggage, loot and plunder intact (if not my nerves).

It all started very early. I left for the N. O. airport around 6:00 this morning and got in my door around 8 this evening (9:00 N. O. time). The first leg of the trip, to Denver, was fine, but I had a 4 hour wait there. Then the damn airplane (“Untied Airlines”) broke, but we know the REAL reason:

Had to wait an extra hour and half, or so, which really cut into the time I had in Calgary to get through customs and get onto the flight to Lethbridge. As it worked out, I didn’t have any time to eat in Calgary, but I did make my plane back home. Of course, the Denver-Calgary flight passed right over Lethbridge, and I could make out my street. That was just about the time I was really worrying about missing my connecting flight. So near and yet so far!

Tom and Sharon Robinson met me at the airport and drove me home. And what did I find when I stepped in the door? Three cats happy as can be to see me?

Well, the house is still standing, but the little beggars knocked over their giant can of Kittie Treats, spilling a gallon of dry cat food on the floor (according to Sharon, this was nearly a daily occurrence). They also tipped over my document shredder. I must remember to empty its basket after every use. Shredded paper all over my office.

Other that that, all is will. I had a great time at the conference. Met some good people like Roland Boer and Jim West, drank my fair share of Abita, at a lot of nice fish in a lot of nice restaurants, heard some good jazz, and found a great record store that now has a lot of my money. And I got myself on the steering committee of the Isrealite Prophetic Literature section.

As Hector Avalos predicted, there were a number of different perspectives at the secular biblical scholarship meeting, but I think a productive way forward can be found. I also met a lot of people who were interested but couldn’t make the meeting. Thanks to Hector for chairing it.

I’m suffering from blogger’s block, but I’ll be damned if I let that stop me from completing my quantity-over-quality-month of posting every day, not when I’ve come this far already. Positive thinking. Anything goes. Let me then share with you some teabag wisdom straight off the bag (herbal bedtime spice mix; I thought it would be fine since it has a multitude of ingredients besides camomile – I can’t stand camomile – but of course it mostly tastes like camomile, damnit):

Bliss is a constant state of mind, undisturbed by gain or loss.

What? I mean…what? I suppose my state of mind is so far from Ayurvedic balance that the sentence doesn’t even compute. I’m kind of disturbed by the tone my teabag is taking – it seems somehow smugly superior. “Want to know about bliss? Well, you can’t have it. Not while you continue to live in the world.” (As I do, taking in gains and losses and generally being changed by them – disturbed, if you will.) What bugs me the most is the complete and utter failure of my teabag to tell me where to look for this elusive “bliss” it seems to have found. If you are determined to share your wisdom with someone, at least make it a bit more accessible. Even just tell me where not to look for it, you know, “Bliss cannot be found behind the radiator,” so that I can stop worrying about cleaning behind the radiator.

And isn’t “a constant state of mind” an oxymoron? The mind can be many things but constant surely isn’t one of them. Or maybe that’s just me.

I’ll put my inconstant mind to bed in a minute and save you from more drivel. Good night, my friends within boxes as well as without.

Wat da hell is dat?!?

Om en uke har jeg bursdag. En av de aller kjedeligste bursdagene i løpet av tenårene, tror jeg. 19. Det er et utrolig kjedelig tall, egentlig. Du ble 16, fikk lov til å begynne å øvelseskjøre med bil og du kunne ta moped- og sengelappen. Så ble du 17. Du ble stadig bedre til å kjøre bil og alle de byrder og goder som følger med myndighetsalderen hang der og fristet. Bil, frihet, stemmerett og ikke minst, retten til å forgifte kroppen med nesten alt vil.

Men, når man så har blitt 18, hva da? Neste morsomme ting blir å bli 20. Og det kun for dem som liker å gå ut på byen og å drikke sterkere saker lovlig. 20 er jo også en markering på at du er ferdig med tenårene, så sånn sett er det gøy. Men når du er 19? Vil du ut på by’n med venner, må dere gå på 18-årssteder, med mennesker som gjerne har sneket seg inn med falsk legitimasjon og har snust på en rusbrus og dermed raver rundt. Artig. Men, 19 har jo den fordelen at 20 ikke er så alt for langt unna.

Jeg gleder meg fortsatt til å ha bursdag. Og til jul, ikke minst. Bursdagen min i år blir noe spesiell. Kun seks dager etter har jeg min første eksamen, Ex.Fac. På en lørdag. Jeg vet jeg har valgt selv å skulle studere, så jeg har egentlig ikke noe å sutre på. Men jeg skulle gjerne ha sluppet å ha eksamen i bakhodet på bursdagen min, men sånn går det når man er født sent på året.

Det skal bli rart å ikke ha masse familie og venner rundt seg da. I løpet av mine 18 år og 51 uker, har jeg liksom blitt vant med at man har familieselskap og venneselskap og masse god mat.

Dagens overskrift er valgt fordi jeg selv er skytten. Som alltid er jeg spent på om noen vet hvor sitatet er hentet fra, og hvilken karakter som uttaler det. Jeg har aldri vært spesielt overtroisk av meg, og horoskoper og slikt ser jeg egentlig på som tull. Men, det er jo litt gøy allikevel.

Today is the hottest day ive ever experienced.

I blame climate change. And cows that pass too much wind.

I mean, the humidity here is so bad, it feels like im constantly F$#^% walking into farts. It’s just as bad when i went to high school and i was constantly walking into farts.

It’s so hot, that my pants have started to sweat. People on the street are walking shirtless, and babies would die faster if they were left outside than in a car.

I think i’ve sweated so much, i’ve lost 3 kilograms. Too bad i still got some bread rolls left over from our last winter, and they’re still attached to my belly.

Now everytime i think i want to go to the beach, i realise that would have been a dangerous thing to do. In a climate like this, flies run amok, fat men think its cool to walk around in a seethrough singlet, Emo’s will continues to wear skinny jeans [Hiking an increase in circulation related deaths] and asains like me would shrug and put another jumper- and i quote “Its not really that hot today,” -and walking around dropping like flies/

An und für sich ist es ja eher ein Fall von “GET A LIFE!”, wenn jemand die Bibel in einer neune Sprache übersetzt. Aber wenn es sich dabei um die LOLspeak handelt, und daraus dann die LOLcat-Bibel entsteht, sag ich nur: Bravo ihm, WIN!

Ein 25 Jähriger Amerikaner rief das Projekt “LOLcat Bible Translation Project” ins Leben, und zusammen mit ca. 2300 Usern die Bibel (fast) komplett in LOLspeak übersetzt! Klingt nerdy, ist es auch. Aber zurecht! Im Jahr 2010 sollen die Abenteuer von Ceilin Cat und Basement Cat dann als fertiges Werk erscheinen, ich bin mal gespannt. Der erste Satz aus der “Bibel” lässt aber schon einiges erhoffen: “Oh hai. In teh beginnin Ceiling Cat maded teh skiez An da Urfs, but he did not eated dem.”

In celebration of Blogger Vegan 4 A Day, I will be following a vegan diet for the entire day. I love challenging myself with new goals and dietary habits, because it forces me to get creative with new foods and recipes! You never know what you may discover! I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today without changing up my my “food ruts” every now and then.

Speaking of food ruts…

I’m totally in a breakfast rut! I was thinking of being creative, making something like Caitlin’s vegan pancakes for breakfast, but oat bran was just calling my name. And since it’s naturally vegan (!), I gave in.   Today it was Pumpkin Oat Bran: 1/3 cup oat bran, 1 cup water, dash of pumpkin pie spice, sea salt, liquid stevia, and topped with almond butter and a drizzle of pure maple syrup. Yum yum.

I’ve got a busy day with work, but I’ll be back later to talk about my brief time as a vegan, and with more of my vegan meals!!!!!

Just have to share: I was SO excited to see someone TWEET about our LOL Catz greeting cards yesterday! He even posted a picture!! Maybe he works at Target? That’s the only place I’ve seen them so far! Keep your eyes peeled!!
