They’re pretty common in lolita. Perfect make-up is almost a necessity, and eyeliner & mascara will do wonders to your eyes, but sometimes there’s just one final, absolutely necessary step. Is it the rhinestones at the corners of her eyes? Is it the glitter shadow, or the perfectly-manicured brow? All are great ways to add to your look, but there’s one last thing, and despite the fact that they’re sometimes glaringly obvious when worn, it is by far one of the best ways to make your eyes look doll-wide, and no, I’m not talking about circle lenses. If a butterfly flapping its wings causes a hurricane by the time it travels around the globe, you’d hate to think what one wink from these babies could do.

Yes, today we’re going to talk about false lashes. They might be intimidating, but if you find the right style &apply them correctly they can be SO worth it. They will make your eyes stand out more and look wider &brighter, making you look more awake – like you have big porcelain doll eyes. First, let’s talk about styles (examples from Shu Uemura):

• Natural Lashes. These are usually black or brown and made to just enhance your natural eyes. Usually they’re the same length as natural lashes or only a little longer and slightly thicker. These are good for daily dressups and non-lolita wear – they’ll enhance but they won’t POP like “fancy” ones will.
• Individual Lashes. These are individual clumps of a few lashes each that you place manually wherever you need. Directions for use here – I have never used them myself, but they seem to be an interesting idea &something I’d like to try in the future.
• “Fancy” Lashes. These are the lashes favored by most lolitas, in my experience. They are big &dramatic &impossible to ignore. They come in hundreds of styles, from feathered to jewelled to glittery to colored to lace to… basically, if you name it you can find it. My favorites that I’ve worn myself are these with little pearls stuck THROUGH the lashes. Unfortunately I left them at my parents house and found them “mysteriously” cut to pieces with all the pearls pulled off.  I think I know who the culprits are…

These are the main styles – obviously, within each there are hundreds &hundreds of variations, so shop around. Speaking of, where can you buy them? If you’re interested in lashes for everyday wear, I recommend going to a high-end cosmetics store like MAC or Sephora and getting a really nice, natural-looking pair. However, for the crazier once-in-a-while styles, I’ve had amazing luck with Halloween and costume stores like Party City. If it’s out of season or you live in a country or area where Halloween isn’t celebrated (poor thing!), you can find them online as well. My Diva’s Closet is very popular and has a great selection, but I’ve never ordered from them myself. Another thing to think about is adhesive. Many companies include a small sample tube with their lashes, but not always – check the packaging to make sure. There are also self-adhesive lashes – I don’t love them, but they work for some people &are good for beginners who don’t wnat to have to worry about glue drying. I’d like to point out that most adhesive contains latex, to which many people (including myself) are allergic. I found latex-free adhesive at my local beauty store but I’m nervous to try it out because of the horror stories I’ve heard about it: I remember hearing about a lolita who wore used a supposedly “latex-free” adhesive, only to wake up the next day with her eyes swollen shut because it wasn’t exactly as hypo-allergetic as the packaging made it out to be. My reaction isn’t terrible, but it was only recently that I realized that my eyes aren’t supposed to itch &sting the entire time I’m wearing my falsies, so pretty soon I’ll probably bite the bullet and try the latex-free stuff soon.

Okay, so you have your lashes: now, let’s apply. There are many companies that make eyelash applicators, but they kind of scare me – curlers are intimidating enough! Make-up is not supposed to need machines! I just apply them myself, by hand, the old-fashioned way. Everyone has their own method, but here’s what I do:

• Apply all other make-up except mascara first – your primer, shadow, liner, etc.
• Before applying glue, take your lashes and put them against your lashline to make sure they’re the right length- trim if necessary from the inside corner.
• Apply a thin line of glue on the lash band.
• Wait a few seconds to give glue time to “set”. Once it becomes tacky, you can begin applying.
• Start at the outer corner and lay the lash on your eyelid as close to the lash line as possible. Press it into place &scootch it down a little further to ensure it stays as low as possible. Continue in the same manner with the center and inner corner, then repeat the whole process on the other eye.
• Apply mascara (black, brown, or clear for funky colors). If you want, you can apply some liquid liner over the band, but I’ve never found it necessary. Curl lightly with an eyelash curler so your natural lashes stick to the fake ones.

&you’re done! They’re a little strange at first, but you should get used to them in a minute or two. If they still feel uncomfortable or even painful, remove them &reapply. After removing them for the day, clean the band &lashes with a bit of eye make-up remover – whatever you’re using on the rest of your eye should be fine. Depending on how healthy your natural lashes are, it may be good to rub some petrolium jelly/Vaseline on them, as mascara &chemicals in other makeup can dry out your lashes, making them brittle &weak – I’ve never done this myself but I’ve heard it helps others.

Besides that, there’s not much to it. Just be careful – a well-timed wink from one of these babies and you’ll be the apple of any onlooker’s eye. Use with caution, &be careful where you aim these things!

In retaliation to the Twilight hype I have been looking, for a long time, a vampire book or novel I have yet to read or watch that would make me proud of vampires again.

That movie was found tonight. I watched “The Forsaken”. It’s a 2001 vampire flick, not a vampire chick flick (Even though the two main males were pretty smokin’). The movie is directed by J.S. Cardone, the director and/or of many remakes and horror flicks, such as The Covenant, The Stepfather, and Prom Night. (Mind you he only wrote and directed one of the mentioned and that is, in fact, The Forsaken) All in all, though it was made in 2001, I thought it was a movie made in 2007. It’s amazing and I highly recomend it for anyone!

Also, on Tuesday I dressed in Casual Lolita to go to classes! (Work really, wearing such clothing to classes at my school is asking for a taunt ;;;)

Anyone who knows me very well knows that I am obsessed with Vladimir Nabokov. I read Lolita for the first time my senior year of high school and found his portrait of America grotesque, absurd and absolutely accurate, even fifty years later. I have since been slowly devouring his literary legacy, one book at a time, and taking notes along the way. I turn to his later works for inspiration and his early short stories for reassurance that even geniuses have humble beginnings.

I hold the opinion that it is difficult for a novel to get any better than Lolita, but I think Ada or Ardor might actually surpass it. I read the majority of Ada the summer I was living in DC, with my legs dangling in the sky blue water of my apartment’s strangely shaped pool. I firmly believe that this was the best possible way to absorb Ada. While the sun ate away at my intellect and turned my shoulders the color of apricots, I was able to simply let the novel, with it’s delectable sun-drenched imagery, seep into me.

I like to quote probably the only literary critic I consistently agree with, John Leonard, in discussing Ada:

Nobody else could have written an antideterministic masterpiece, contemptuous of Freud (there is no guilt) and Marx (there are no politics, no economics, not even any history), that is at once a sexual and philosophical romance, a brilliant science-fiction, an awesome parody and a gigantic punundrum that would wake up Finnegan.

I found this video about Nabokov a while ago, and it is definitely one of my favorite arbitrary internet discoveries. The note cards he refers to as “The Texture of Time” will later become Ada or Ardor. (Also, don’t worry, it’s not all in French.)

Comparing Faulkner to “a hypnotized person making love to a chair”? What an amazing cocky bastard.

Every so often I’ve updated the list of films that I have already seen with brief reviews.  Call it the complete-ist in me, but when I’m done with reviewing each of the films in the book, I’d like to have reviewed every single film in the book.

Shichinin No Samurai AKA Seven Samurai (1954)

The Seven Samurai is the first movie that I had the pleasure of seeing from the master director Akira Kurosawa, and it is also one of his most praised works. Without a wasted frame, the story takes place over the course of almost 3 hours. Kurosawa, as he does in each of his movies, explores more than just the action and injustice featured in the plot. He is a humanist first and foremost, training his lens on the interpersonal relationships of the characters, tracking growth across this epic. As good as this film is, I would have to say that Kurosawa has numerous films that are even better, check out Stray Dog, Rashomon, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and my personal favorite High and Low.

The Ladykillers (1955)

Existing as a special combination of dark humor, and slapstick farce, The Ladykillers is exceptionally funny and unsettling. Alec Guinness stars as the leader of a group of criminals staying at the home of a hardy, vivacious older lady under the guise of being musicians. The plan is simple, rob a bank, and utilizing the trusting nature of the kindly old lady, and the remoteness of her home to their advantage, get away with it. Easily my favorite of Alec Guinness’ films (thanks in part to the Star Wars prequels that is), The Ladykillers features a solid cast of great actors, including a very young Peter Sellers.

Bob Le Flambeur AKA Bob the Gambler (1955)

My introduction to the fantastic Jean-Pierre Melville, I was captivated immediately by the cool as ice gangster come gambler Bob. This film is filled with signature Melville-isms. Glorious post war street scenes in Paris. Trench-coats. Honor among thieves. And who could forget the caper. To talk too much about this film is to give too much away, and to do that is to ruin it for those who haven’t seen it. Other classics by Melville: Le Cercle Rouge, Le Samourai, and the recently released in the U.S. Army of Shadows. All are fantastic, and deserve to be in this book! Incidentally, Bob le Flambeur was recently re-made into The Good Thief starring Nick Nolte and directed by Neil Jordan, and while I’m not generally a fan of re-makes, I really, really liked this film. Not quite as good as the original, but it was one of my favorite films of 2002.

Kiss Me Deadly (1955)

The ultimate in hardboiled private eye crime stories, Kiss Me Deadly is a full on assault on decency. Kiss Me Deadly proudly presents itself as a grimy PI story, littered with bodies and intrigue. If you even have a passing interest in film noir, this should be your first stop. Violent, misogynist, brutish, and glorious, Kiss Me Deadly begs to be watched and dares you to look away. I myself, loved it!

The Ten Commandments (1956)

Apparently based on a book, The Ten Commandments is an epic in every sense of the word. Colored in bright explosive candy hues, and featuring huge sets, as well as a cast that number in the thousands, The Ten Commandments is more spectacle than great movie. Certainly not a waste of time, but not my first choice when choosing something light to throw in.

Det Sjunde Inseglet AKA The Seventh Seal (1957)

A classic, and well-loved film by Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman, The Seventh Seal stars an extremely young Max von Sydow as a knight who faces Death at a game of chess to decide his fate. This film is filled with themes that find their way into each of Bergman’s works, ranging from courage in the face of death, religion, and humanity. The Seventh Seal still holds up to this day, with luminous black and white photography that, thanks to Criterion’s Blu-ray edition, has never looked better.

Note: Don’t be fooled by the similarly themed, but much worse, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey”

Kumonosu Jo AKA Throne of Blood (1957)

Kurosawa’s retelling of Macbeth set in feudal Japan. Shakespeare has never looked better as it does in the stark black and white, twisting shadows and swirling mists as seen through Kurosawa’s camera. Toshiro Mifune doesn’t disappoint in the lead role, but the real stand out is Isuzu Yamada in the as Mifune’s opportunistic, poisonous wife. The plotting and scheming starts right from the get go, all the way up till the frenzied end of the film.

Touch of Evil (1958)

One of the many trouble spots on Orson Welles’ resume due to studio interference, and financing issues, still Touch of Evil remains as possibly the best B-Movie ever made. Iconic (and sometimes hilarious) performances by Janet Leigh, Charlton Heston (as a Mexican) and Welles himself as the crooked cop willing to do almost anything to ensure justice prevails (just so long as it’s his justice). The movie is almost as famous for its long tracking shot opening as it is for any of the performances, featuring a nearly 4 minute shot done in one take which travels around cars, actors, and buildings. The film The Player, payed homage to it by mentioning it a few times during a similarly complex shot in that film.

Vertigo (1958)

Flopping on its initial release, Vertigo didn’t gain the acclaim it deserved until much later after it was released on video. Vertigo visits themes present in each of Hitchcock’s other works, including the obsession with blondes, innocence tainted with corruption, and the schlub who get in over his head. Jimmy Stewart plays the schlub, Kim Novak plays the blonde, and gloriously technicolored San Francisco plays the innocence and the corruption. Vertigo has a twisty convoluted story with elements of surrealism, an interesting watch.

Mon Oncle AKA My Uncle (1958)

My favorite of Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot films, Mon Oncle was also the first of them that I had seen. Tati, playing Hulot, is a master of visual comedy, and not in the same way as the Three Stooges, or even Buster Keaton. Tati is an artist whose work is appreciated the longer you watch. The plot of the movie is not so much important to the film as it is simply a guide to get our characters into interesting situations so we can watch them get out. If you liked this film, check out other films featuring the bumbling Mr. Hulot, including Trafic, Playtime, and Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot.

Les Quatre Cents Coups AKA The 400 Blows (1959)

My personal favorite of the French new wave movement was this small-scale film, personal piece from Francois Truffaut. Featuring the director’s alter ego, Antoine Doinel, The 400 Blows is the first in a series of movies, each about a different stage of life and the challenges that go along with them. The period from childhood to young adult is covered heart-breakingly here, following Antoine through the rough waters of his home life and his interaction with the outside world. Later chapters deal with finding love, getting married, having children, and growing old, but Les Quatres Cent Coups remains the directors most personal and his best.

North by Northwest (1959)

One of Hitchcock’s best, North by Northwest features Cary Grant, suave as ever, being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies. Just like in Hitchcock’s most famous works (of which this is one), the witty one-liners, suspense, and drama are heaped on generously. I can’t help but feel sad that a similarly themed, but better film featuring Cary Grant was left off this 1001 list. Charade, also featuring Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn, and Walter Matthau, is one of my favorite movies ever! Check out both Charade AND North by Northwest as a double feature! You won’t be sorry.

Some Like it Hot (1959)

Now this is an example of a classic, well-loved film, with actors that I really love (Jack Lemmon I’m looking at you), a premise that is more than suitable, yet the finished product never really caught me. It’s sort of like Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief. I never really saw what all the hype was about. That being said, I didn’t hate it either. It never made fun of me when I had braces, or turned me down for a date, my affections and this film have just always been mutually exclusive. Perhaps it deserves another watch…then again maybe I should just watch The Last Boyscout again.

A Bout De Souffle AKA Breathless (1959)

Jean-Luc Godard is nothing if not a sacred cow of French cinema, and while I have loved some of his other films (Le Mepris, Bande A Part, and Masculin Femenine), Breathless or A Bout De Souffle never really did it for me. I can still rationalize why it was so revolutionary (use of jump cuts, editing, non-actors, and subscription to the aesthetic of the French new wave style), and see it’s importance, but I prefer other examples of New Wave cinema. If you are interested in seeing a Godard film, try Masculin Feminine, it is just as revolutionary and a bit more accessible.

Psycho (1960)

A prime example of Hitchcock in his prime. Psycho was so good, and so affecting that some of its actors were type cast just on the strength of this one film (Anthony Perkins, and Janet Leigh), so much so that without a little research it’s hard to think of what other films either of them has been in. Psycho may not be as visually shocking and gory as horror films of today, but it still manages to hold up over time and be just as unsettling as it was back in its day. Hitchcock has always excelled at making the comfortable un-comfortable (motels, birds, tea, dreams, the list goes on…), and the subtle touches in this film work perfectly. Consider for a moment that Perkin’s Bates is an amateur taxidermist of birds, and then that Janet Leigh’s name is Marion Crane a type of bird, or the fact before the crime Marion is wearing a white bra and a white purse, while after it she is wearing a black bra and purse. His attention to detail, and knack for foreshadowing is demonstrated in full force in Psycho and remains one of his best films. Despite all the uproar over the Gus Van Sant remake, I thought it actually did some justice to the original film and if nothing else brought it a little more deserved attention.

Note: This film also has the distinction of being the first American film to ever show a toilet flushing on-screen.

Peeping Tom (1960)

Released the same year as Psycho, and dealing with similar subject matter, Peeping Tom wasn’t received with the same acclaim and attention that the former was. On the contrary, Peeping Tom was seen as subversive, perverted, and generally too shocking. The story revolves more around the killer than the victim in this one, whereas Psycho is presented more from the victim’s point of view. Either way, Peeping Tom is a fine film, one worth watching, however it is so similar to Psycho that I’m not sure it needs to be on the list of 1001 films.

The Apartment (1960)

As far as light-hearted, touching movies about someone recovering from a bout of depression, this one is my favorite. Billy Wilder directs Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon in a sweet touching comedy without losing any of his trademark cynicism or the pointedness of his dialogue. The Apartment is another chance for me to champion the somewhat maligned talents of Mr. Fred MacMurray as Lemmon’s boss. MacMurray plays a fantastic creep who really defines the term “heel”.

Spartacus (1960)

Containing almost none of the trademark elements that make up a Stanley Kubrick movie as we know it (Kubrick apparently dis-owned the film before it’s release), Spartacus remains an interesting movie that isn’t great. It is, however, another example of a film that enabled an up and coming filmmaker to gain his voice, and define himself later on in his career. If only for that reason, Spartacus is a great film, but luckily for the studio, it has some other things going for it. Kirk Douglas plays the title role of Spartacus, and despite all the lavish set production, and concentration on spectacle, brings some heart to the slave who defied Rome.

Jules Et Jim AKA Jules and Jim (1962)

One of director, Francois Truffaut’s most well thought of films, Jules and Jim may be the Lost In Translation, or Juno of its time. Viewed from a certain angle, the plot is a completely moving and emotional story that you believe, so much so, that you can see yourself and those around you in the roles that these characters embody. Viewed from another perspective, it can seem a little precious or purposefully manipulative. Depending on what is happening in your life (I’m mostly thinking about whether or not you are in a relationship, and if you are happy), this movie can preach the glory of love and the pain of rejection. On the flipside, if you have shaken free the angsty, teenager-esque feelings everyone has had in their youth, you may feel like you’re being talked down to.

Cleo De 5 A 7 AKA Cleo from 5 to 7

Taking place, as the title suggests, from 5 to 7, we get a slice of the life of Cleo played out before us. Sometimes we, along with Cleo herself, are a voyeurs into the lives of people around her, and other times we are focused on her as she roams around Paris. By and large Cleo lives a carefree, spoiled life, yet we still sympathize with her when times are hard, and cheer for her when they are good. This is a small film in a lot of ways, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t impacting and beautiful.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

I have to admit.  I didn’t like Lawrence of Arabia that much.  Perhaps I was too young to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of Lean’s desert panorama camerawork, or just maybe it was the epic length that decided it for me.  One way or another, I didn’t appreciate it as much as everyone else seems to think I should. 

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

Overly reliant on gimmicks and quick editing techniques, The Manchurian Candidate doesn’t flesh out the story nearly…wait, no that was the terrible re-make that came out in 2004.  The original 1962 version, is just as taught, and well executed today as it was at its release.  While the story between the two versions remained virtually the same, the consistent building of tension and anxiety, combined with the pitch perfect acting of Lawrence Harvey, Frank Sinatra (yes…Frank Sinatra), and the devilish turn of Angela Lansbury as the Queen of Hearts, makes for a fantastic film.

Lolita (1962)

It took me forever to finally see Lolita.  I have known the basic story (older man, younger girl) but had just never gotten around to seeing it.  And while I’ve been told that the book is much better, I thought the film was pretty good.  Not great, mind you, but definitely solid.  The shocking and controversial nature of the relationship was toned down a bit for the screen, and maybe as a result doesn’t seem all that shocking in today’s day and age.  Memorable turns by Peter Sellers, and Shelley Winters, not to mention it’s an early film of Stanley Kubrick.

The Birds (1963)

Despite being one of Hitchcock’s most popular, I actually think that The Birds is one of his most over-rated.  I think I owe it to myself to give this one another look someday, but right now I feel that it was too heavily based on the gimmick that had to rely on special effects.  Though it is not necessarily the fault of the movie, but the special effects seemed particularly dated and old fashioned.  Worth a watch, but not my favorite by a long shot.

8 1/2 (1963)

Federico Fellini is, by most accounts, a master of cinema.  One, that I have always had a little trouble getting fired up over.  It’s not that I don’t like his films once I’ve seen them, the problem comes in when it comes to motivating myself to see them.  I couldn’t tell you why, but his films consistently get pushed off when they come up on my Netflix Queue or when I see the one or two I have on my shelf.  I shouldn’t feel this way, considering I really loved the moving poetry, and soul baring passion in 8 1/2, yet it still happens.  One very definite reason to watch this film is the man-crushable Marcello Mastroianni, swaggering through as the alter-ego of Fellini himself.  Dealing with all the reservations with women, making movies, childhood, and the future that the director very famously dealt with himself, Mastroianni embodies a certain cool, yet believable character that begs to be watched.  Combined with imagery that leaves the audience wanting more, 8 1/2 is a fantastic film.

Uma graça a moda... eu vou aderir =P

A Moda Lolita (ou Loli) é um estilo japonês de moda cujas primeiras manifestações apareceram em fins da década de 70 e começo da década de 80. Inspiradas em parte na cultura ‘kawaii’ (fofa ou adorável) japonesa e na nostalgia de outros tempos – sejam períodos históricos ou simplesmente da própria infância – as lolitas se dividem em vários tipos, sendo alguns polêmicos e de existência controversa.

O estilo como um todo pode ser muitas vezes descrito como “inocente” mas existem exceções dependendo do subestilo e da lolita em questão. Há também certa preocupação com parecer infantil, elegante ou modesta, evitando uma imagem adulta, sexualizada (dependendo do estilo da lolita) ou vulgar. Saias rodadas no comprimento do joelho, em forma de sino, renda de boa qualidade, decote alto, cabelos cacheados e/ou acompanhados a uma franja reta e tecidos pouco brilhantes são comuns a todos os estilos.

Finalmente, eu vou falar sobre Moda aqui no meu Blog! Hoje eu vi uma notícia an TV sobre a Moda das Lolitas, que está fazendo sucesso no Japão.

Nessa semana, o Brasil recebe a visita de uma representante do Japão dessa tal moda, que é uma espécie de embaixadora.

Eu achei tão linda e fofa essa moda, que me “apaixonei” XP, uma graça, tanto que vou aderir (umas partes, claro!) do visual; dá vontade de morar no Japão… só pra me vestir como uma boneca assim, porque se eu andar assim por aqui, vou ser centro de atenções que vão achar que to indo pra uma festa a fantasia.

Voltando a falar da representante das lolitas do Japão, Misako Aoki é a embaixadora Kawaii, o que significa mais ou menos “embaixadora da meiguice”.  Ela já foi a oito países em missões oficiais, a próxima parada é o Brasil.
O que significa ser uma Lolita? “É transformar o sonho em realidade. Toda mulher gosta de se sentir como uma princesa. Com a roupa de Lolita, isso é possível mesmo depois de adulta”, explica.

Ela, Misako, é enfermeira, e diz que, se for pra tratar dos pacientes vestida dessa moda lolita, ela vai mesmo assim.

Ao querer saber se essa moda “lolita” vai pegar no Brasil, ela diz que o Brasil por ser muito quente, talvez as brasileiras não usem a roupa completa, porque a saia tem várias camadas, mas quem sabe, algumas peças e acessórios.

I really don’t get the Lolita-complex that many older men seem to have.  Why would a 35+ year old man old hit on a 20 year old girl and honestly think he has a chance?  I mean, maybe some girls have such low self-esteem that they’ll do anyone, or have a daddy-complex of their own, but most girls my age are not interested in people old enough to be our fathers.

In Illinois, this was really a non-issue.  Sure, you encountered an old pervert every now and then, but not too often.  I don’t know why, but NYC is totally different.  Maybe it’s because there are just more people, or maybe that kind of age difference is acceptable here (gross!). Whatever the cause, I can’t even go for a walk in along the East River or in Central Park without getting hit on by graying guys.  And this is when I’m wearing jeans and a hoodie!  Then they get all offended when I brush them off and ignore them, but what did they expect? To put it frankly, I know I look good and could get laid by almost any guy I wanted, so why would I be interested in some old geezer? I mean, it’s basic common sense, no?

"E existe algo mais parecido com o amor do que a morte?" - Anita

Talvez o leitor se lembre da minissérie Presença de Anita, transmitida pela TV Glogo em Agosto de 2001. Não sou muito de TV, mas me lembro com saudades de Anita. Na época, a história da lolita foi um grande sucesso, tanto que a emissora quis esticá-la para além dos dezesseis episódios programados (manobra que se revelou impossível, uma vez que a maior parte dos capítulos já havia sido gravada). A interessante história, livremente inspirada no livro homônimo de Mário Donato, trazia Anita, uma jovem provocante que se envolvia com um homem casado e bem mais velho que ela e, também, com um rapaz mais jovem que ardia em vontade de viver seu primeiro grande amor.

Foi divulgado, há alguns meses, que um filme sobre a minissérie poderia ser feito. Algum tempo depois, o autor, Manuel Carlos, confirmou a autorização para fazer o filme. Surgiu, porém, a minissérie Maysa – Quando Fala o Coração (sobre a cantora Maysa Matarazzo. Dessa, também, pude assistir alguns capítulos e recomendo), o que adiou a produção do roteiro. Logo em seguida, veio a telenovela Viver a Vida, que está sendo exibida atualmente como a novela das 8 da TV Globo. Assim, o filme parece ter sido deixado de lado, se tornado mais um daqueles projetos que nunca saem do papel.

No entanto, recentemente, Manuel Carlos comentou (mesmo que de forma vaga) que o projeto será, sim, finalizado. Após o fim da telenovela Viver a Vida (primeiro semestre de 2010), “Maneco” prosseguirá com o roteiro que, segundo ele, já está começado. A direção já foi colocada a cargo de Daniel Filho (A Partilha, A Dona da História, Se Eu Fosse Você), mas não se decidiu nada sobre o elenco ainda. Parece, porém, que Mel Lisboa, não se sabe porque, não reviverá Anita. “Só não pensei em elenco ainda. Minha intenção é um grande concurso para achar a Anita. Que ela seja tão adequada e tão talentosa quanto a Mel Lisboa foi para a minissérie, uma Anita eterna na minha cabeça.” diz Manuel Carlos que, como eu, não parece ter uma outra imagem da Anita na cabeça senão a de Mel.

Bom, depois desse artigo, talvez tenha surgido uma pontinha nostálgica no leitor. Para solucioná-la, que tal relembrar a abertura da série? Ao som de Ne Me Quitte Pas na voz de Maysa:

Sugiro, ainda, a leitura do livro homônimo, lançado em 1948 (e que trouxe muitos problemas ao autor, que chegou a ser considerado Persona Non Grata na cidade em que viveu). Mas que o leitor não vá esperando reviver a série: além das óbvias diferenças de época, o enredo do livro e da série diferem muito. O leitor pode, ainda, ler o livro Lolita (Vladimir Nobokov, 1955) (ou assistir às suas duas adaptações cinematográficas), referência mundial em histórias de jovens sedutoras e influência confessa no roteiro da minissérie.

Here I am, to blog about AFA again. Actually, I am pretty tired, and is only blogging cos of the NaBloPoMo. But overall, it is a great cosplay event. Look up cosplay for those who dun understand. I will be posting pictures AFTER today, since I am seriously too tired.

Ok, lets start from the start.
Today, I did not cosplay. I merely dressed up in loli, and went to a cosplay event. This is probably my first most serioust loli, insisting on getting NOT A SINGLE PIECE WRONG. Ok, I had always mixed something non-loli in my lolitas before, until today…. and Seriously, even though I did that, it din feel special to me. I am too used to loli-ing. But today, I was totally into the cosplaying spirit, and ignored ogles, especially from an annoying man on the train, who looked me up and down, and then turn back to look. Seriously, he look like a pervy. And because I inisisted on the entire spirit, I was unwilling to let others take photos of me without my permission. But before I even get out of the train station, a man saw me, he had a cam in his hand, and he started raising it and etc. I din wan to get photo-ed without being asked, so I rushed past. Alas! His speed is better than mine! He turned and camera and click click click. I think he managed to get me into 2 clicks. But I hope they are BLUR. Serves you right.

Then, it is the event. Kaname* came to AFA, and seriously, I din know what is the big deal about him, until I saw his photo – his cosplay photo, and I was like, MAN, THIS GUY CAN COSPLAY! I was seriously awed by how he brought the entire character into life. Man, you can seriously like some guy for somethings they do – I mean it. This is professional. This is amazing. And he is so polite and nice and understanding! He is cute and pretty too! I din notice it before, since I was too focused on being awed by his come-into-life cosplay. But after the presentation, I was totally taken over. I think I will try really hard now. I am going to work really hard.

Then, it is outside, hoping to catch Kaname* and also taking photos. What my friends and I were not expected was that we had to take SO MANY photos! I mean, this is the first time in our entire life that we had been asked to pose for so many photos!!! Me too! And I am not cosplaying! There are people who told me I look nice in my outfit *which happens to M-chan, but NOT to me…. seriously!* and there are people who swam up to me for photos.. and then, there is a person who took my photo, and when I next turn around, he gave me a thumbs up for my outfit. Then, there are photogs who took pictures of me taking pictures of M-chan and A-chan in their cosplay. I am… speechless. Truth to tell, I am more of shocked when I heard the shutter sound so close behind me. I have spoilt too many photos when I am taking close up pictures of my fellow friends in their cosplay and forgot about everything else. I am ashamed, but it was because I do not take good enough pictures that I wanted to really make it good. I tried my best each time. But the man tried to stop me and explained what he was doing…. Ok, I must say something here. I am a photographer in the group of us. I am the one who is always taking photos of my friends in cosplay. So, even if I am dressed up in Loli, I am still photographer. So, I am always taking photos of my friends. *Shakes head* I duno what to say. These people think too much of me.. and me? I spoilt their photos when I butt into their camera screens, I spoil their photos when I din smile properly for them in the photos. I tried .. but I found it weird to smile in front of so many people with so many cameras. Seriously, these people make me want to try harder. And I will. It is a PROMISE. I swear. But still, the best moment comes when M-chan says to me: You make this hat yourself? It is good!

MAN! M-chan, the one who makes amazing costumes, said that to me!!! My first mini hat was HERS, ok! She is the one who lent me the first handmade mini hat to accompany my loli attire, ok! She is the amazing one ok! But seriously…. When I got home… I was too tired, and so… the ribbon kinda …. frayed too much!!! I feel like stabbing myself.

Ok, continue on. We can’t find Kaname*, and M-chan has to leave. I realised that, Man! I din have EVEN ONE PHOTO of myself with these guys!!! OK, when I realised that I din have EVEN one photo of myself in full loli-dressup today, I was shocked, but that was made up with Aya-tan, but him asking if we can do hime-shot, since we are dressed up like that. Ok, I have to say something here. Aya-tan is so amazing, we were … idolising him already. He made a GOOD cosplayer. Not kaname* good, but nice and everything. I guess you can call him a good person. And he shooked out hands… initiated the shake and everything. And I got a cam-whore pic with him. He is so innocent, he din even know what is cam-whore. But he told us, that his costume comes from Jap, and he can help us get it if we wanted something like that. Ok, so it is advertisement thingy.

So, I didn’t have EVEN one picture of me w those girlies, so I have HAVE HAVE HAVE HAVE HAVE to get one. And I got them. Happies~

We missed the K-ON live dubbing, but experienced the other one… and We were like, so this is how it is done… what is done?? That is, live dubbing. I mean, there is no extra effects. It is really the voice actresses real voices… MAN. How can someone produce such a sound? We cannot comprehend.

Let’s move on.
May’n and Yoshiki. I should mention that my feet are very tired. And that I am very tired standing. But I withstand everything. Yoshiki was good, but I shall move on. May’n performed songs from her own albums, so I don’t think the scene was OVER enthu, just enthu enough. She sang around 5 songs from her album. And she is seriously CUTE. When she speaks, it is that cute voice that you know is sincere and that she is trying very hard to get every word correct though I don’t understand a lot of what she said in Eng. But when she sings Get Ready, her new song, it is … totally… good. You can tell she is trying her best to speak english. And she made mistakes, but May’n, nobody will care that you made mistakes. Instead, you will find people saying those exact words you said. Believe me. OK she is not gg to read this. But you can tell how different she is. She is a performer, that much I know. I heard her performances before, I have seen them before, live and on videos, so I know. But when she is performing and when she is not… man, How can someone be so cute off performances and so professionally good on performances?

So, when she finally sang Macross songs *I had given up hope*, We were SUPER ENTHU. The entire house rocked. First is Northern Cross, then it is Lion, and finally, Don’t be late. Ok, it is obvious. I mean, when she made us practice yelling “motteke!” like 5 times, it is OBVIOUS. But, I have something I want to know… why issit that when she was singing Lion and Northern Cross, I was singing along softly, and I heard the crowd doing so too? Cos of the loud volume, I cannot confirm. But when she sang Don’t be late, It is OBVIOUS. everyone sang along, word for word, sound for sound.

I think people behind me and I know some in front of me were shocked. But I had decided to throw away all pretense. I am myself, and myself only. I want to enjoy myself, and this is how I do it. I raise my fists in syn with May’n and them, and I whooo out loud. I sing along, and I sang the chorus together with everyone else. I yelled MOIKAI~ along with the others when it ended, because I really wanted more. I desired it so much. What is amazing is that I forgot all about the sores that had been in my body, growing minute by minute. I had forgotten even my handbag hanging by my arm. I forgot about it totally. I was surprised by the weight when I was yelling Moikai.

Then, It IS moikai. Yoshiki and May’n. They sang macross frontier Yousei duet style with Yoshiki playing guitar… amazing!!! Then, it is macross 7, I think… some song with “dynamites, dynamites, dynamites” in the chorus…. I have no idea what it is, but I enjoyed it as well. I know I am amazed by them when I said out “oh my gosh” of course, since the speaker is loud, I don’t think others heard me, but I said it out loud before I can stop myself. AMAZING. My ears are still ringing with their songs. Moikai onegai!

Last words.
There are people who took photos and videos. These people were stopped and told that if they do it again, they will be sent out. So, don’t blame people for not providing photos or videos. I want to say that, if you are videoing such a good performance, YOU ARE INSANE. I seriously think you are insane. Normal people should be totally soaked in the performance! Appreciate the performer by paying attention! And, for such a good performance, you should not even be thinking about videoing. It is … too much… I won’t even remember my camera. I mean it. It is too good.

And Finally I leave you guys with Kaname*’s words. Let’s enjoy cosplay. Do not look down or discriminate people who like these things, I must warn you. Because this is what we seriously want to do.

Here is the cosplay photos as promised. There is one I would like to comment on. You would notice a Gundam one. That is a flaming job. I do not like it at all. I feel that it is being discouragousa and rude to cosplayers and anime fans alike. Come on, he even painted the ‘helmet’ well… what is the meaning of this?? You work so hard to laugh at us? The Queen in 3D: Channel 4 (Recorded 16th Nov Watched 16th Nov)

I wouldn’t usually watch anything about the ‘royals’ if you paid me but this was an opportunity to use my Chuck 3D glasses again.

I started off being quite enthusiastic about the programme; it’s always interesting to see colour footage of life in the 1950s and earlier so it’s quite remarkable to see it in 3D.  Some of the scenes were incredibly effective and the ‘royal’ stuff wasn’t as interesting as the footage of ordinary people.

The problem was that the novelty wore off after about 10 minutes and then you’re just sat there watching boring clips.  It certainly made me question the current trend for 3D films in the cinema.

Top Gear: BBC HD (R 15th Nov W 17th Nov)

It’s the return of Top Gear (now in HD), the programme that evokes more conflicting emotions than any other programme that I watch.  On the negative side, the presenters are annoying, it’s too pleased with itself, there’s too much fakery and most of Clarkson’s views are reprehensible.  On the other hand it has a sense of adventure and wonder that you really don’t find anywhere else and it’s more beautifully shot than any Hollywood film.  Annoying but watchable.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: iTunes (Downloaded 17th Nov W 17th Nov)

I was distraught, last week, when I missed episode 5 of Curb but I decided to take Jed Unpopcult’s advice and download it from iTunes (as much as it hurt for me to pay for it).  And boy, was I ever glad that I did.  After last week’s somewhat disappointing episode Larry & co were right back on top form.  There really were too many funny bits to mention – but if I told you that the plot revolved around Larry dating a woman in a wheelchair, you might start to get the idea.  Highlights included: asking about a Chinese child’s proficiency with chopsticks, Larry attempting to kiss Denise in her wheelchair, Leon asking if Larry “brought it”, hiding the blackberry under the towel and Rosie O’Donnell being as pig-headed as Larry.

There haven’t been many programmes ever that have made me laugh so much.  If you’re not watching it then I want a written note from your mother as to why not.

Misfits: E4 (R 12th Nov W 19th Nov)

Misfits has, inevitably, been described as ‘Skins meets Heroes’ and this made me question whether I was actually going to bother watching it.  As much as the description put me off, there was no was that I was going to miss a British superhero programme.

Five, typically annoying, teens are struck by lightning while on community service and find that they have gained superpowers.  I have quite a low threshold for watching anything featuring ‘realistic’ teens, so the first ten minutes or so were a bit of a chore.  Things picked up, though, as the story gained momentum and it was really successfully done.  It’s rare that we get these high-concept sci-fi shows in the UK but when we do they often have a unique flavour.

Having the powers relate to the characters’ personalities wasn’t the subtlest touch (the shy one turns invisible etc) but by the end of the episode we did start to see them as real human beings.  I’ll definitely be tuning in for the second episode.

Stargate Universe: Sky One (R 17th Nov W 21st Nov)

I’ve been pretty underwhelmed by this series from the start but I stuck with it because it seemed like something might happen.  Well, it only took about 5 minutes of this episode before I decided that nothing was ever going to happen.  It felt like a relief to finally give up on it.

Kamikaze Girls: Film4 (R 13th Nov W 21st Nov)

I’ve got a habit of recording any foreign-language film that I spot because I’m a bit of a snob and they don’t tend to repeat them; you’ve got to watch them when you can.  The problem is that I’ve really got to be in the mood to watch a movie and when they’re sub-titled you really have to concentrate, so I’ve ended up with lots of unwatched films.  I’ve found myself deleting a few recently but I made an effort to watch this.

Kamikaze Girls could be described as a Japanese Amelie; it’s a quirky film that features an attractive female stuck in her own magical realism world.  This being a Japanese film, though, means that it has its own strangeness that makes it nothing like Amelie.  The plot, such as it is, revolves around two teenage girls who form an unlikely friendship – Momoko, who like to wear frilly ‘lolita’ dresses and Ichigo, a slightly psychotic biker chick.  In some ways nothing much else happens, but that would be really selling it short, and it kept my interest to the end.  There is a great scene towards the end when Momoko finally flips when trying to defend Ichigo against a biker gang that’s actually very funny.

I’d like to add that the reason that I liked the film had nothing to do with the main character being gorgeous and prancing round in ‘lolita’ outfits.  Honest.

Sākšu ar to, ka vienmēr esmu bijusi Lolitu modes fane. It sevišķi pie sirds gājuši konkrēta tipa svārki. Tādi, kuriem apakšējā mala ir atšķirīga no pārējā auguma. Piemēram:

Tad nebija brīnums, ka šodien humpalās uzejot šos aizkarus, es skaļi dipināju ar kājiņām un aiz sajūsmas plaukšķināju rociņas.

Biju tik sajūsmināta, ka tiklīdz nonācu mājās uzreiz ķēros pie šūšanas. Tad nu sākam.

1. Izmantojot piedāvāto materiālu līdz pilnībai un ekonomējot laiku un nervus (ehm… vnk esmu slinka ) Neko nedīrājot ķēros uzreiz pie griešanas un aizkaru apakšējo malu izmantoju arī par svārku apakšējo malu (tikai pārliecinies, ka aizkari ir pietiekoši plati, lai savelkot augšdaļā sanāktu kupli svārki).

Nomēri cik garus tu vēlēsies svārkus (vai arī izmanto kādu svārku garumu, kas tev jau ir un liekas, ka derēs arī šiem). Attiecīgi cik gumiju rindas tu vēlies, pie svārku garuma pieliec 2 cm par katru rindu (attiecīgi, manā gadījumā es pieliku 4 cm, jo man ir 2 rindas). UN pie tā vēl pievieno 0,5-1 cm vīles tiesu. Kad esi droša, ka šis nu ir īstais garums (pirms tam vēl pārliecinies pie spoguļa, kā saka 7x nomēri un tad griez), nogriez pa atzīmēto līniju (laikam jāpiemin, ka vislabākā ideja ir visas atzīmes zīmēt uz kreisās puses). Pirms griez arī pārliecinies, ka abas “sānu” daļas ir vienādas, lai nerodas problēmas pašās beigās.

Manā gadījumā bija jābūt ļoti uzmanīgam, jo aizkariem bija kaut kāda oderes daļa, kuru nolēmu atstāt uz svārku kupluma rēķina.

2.Nogrieztajā daļā ieloci malu uz iekšu par 0,5 – 1 cm (attiecīgi cik pievienoji) kā parādīts attēlā

Tad to pašu malu ieloci vēlreiz par pusi no pievienotajiem rindu centimetriem. Respektīvi, ja man bija 4 cm, es noloku 2 cm (hope this makes sense)

Gar malu nošuj kā parādīts attēlā, pirms tam pārliecinoties, ka sākumvīles un beigu vīles malas pēc garuma sakrīt. Iesaku turēties pēc iespējas tuvāk pie iekšējās malas, bet nevajag pārspīlēt 2-3 mm ir ideāli

3. Ieliekot vieglas atzīmes sadali nošūto malu pa tevis izvēlētajām rindām ar ~ 1 cm atstarpi (manā gadījumā 1 atzīme, jo tikai 2 rindas). Pa līniju nošuj.

4. Attiecīgi tavu rindu skaitam nogriez parastu gumiju tavas jostasvietas izmērā (manā gadījumā 2 gumijas)

piespraud vienā gumijas galā drošības adatu un izver to cauri vienai no rindām.

Ja tev, tāpat kā man, ir 2 rindas un tev, varbūt patīk, kā izskatās josta šādi, tad vari turpināt nākošo soli, ja tomēr ne, tad turpini šo pašu un izver gumiju arī caur pārējām rindām (nostiprini katru izvērtās gumijas galu, lai tie neievelkas iekšā.

Apliec svārkus sev apkārt un, turot aiz gumijām pārbaudi, vai šāds gumijas garuma tev der (turot gumijas kopā pārbaudi vai varēsi tos ērti uzvilkt un vai tie nešļuks nost. Mans materiāls izrādījās pasmags un gumija izstiepās un man nācās to nedaudz saīsināt. Šādi tagad tam visam būtu jāizskatās.

5. Pēdējais solis! Saliec abas sānu malas kopā ar labajām pusēm un, sākot no apakšas, nošuj ~ 0.5 – 1 cm vīli. Nošuj gumiju daļā vairākkārtīgi, lai būtu droši, ka tur nekas nesāks slīdēt ārā.

Nogriez gumijas pārpalikumus, ja tādi ir un viss gatavs!
