The Albero Plant & Garden Festival runs until the 27th of December, so there is still time to get over there and explore the amazing home and landscaping elements in the special festival stall area west of Cioccolata.

There are a surprising amount of animals at the festival — a few of them have already been showcased on the blog here, but now let’s look at the LOLO. The LOLO is a leader in the virtual animal kingdom, and they have a shop up in Albero. They make great animals and interactive pets, from puppies to pandas to pterodactyls. Their stall festival features some of their smaller creatures: skunks (290L) and squirrels (490L). In characteristic LOLO form, the animals have a bit of personality — the skunk sprays avatars that bother it, and the squirrels give out acorns.

There are also LOLO butterflies (500L), and they are my favorite pick from this animal lineup — I have them in several of my virtual living spaces and they really add atmosphere both inside and out.

The LOLO also makes some fantastic environmental elements — I have their larger weather system snowing over one of my parcels right now and I use the mist all over in many ways. At the festival, you can pick up their mist and snow generators, both 450L and worth every penny. The end result is exactly what it should be, and there are lots of menu options to customize these effects to your taste.

And, of course, the LOLO wouldn’t be at a festival celebrating plants and gardens without some sort of greenscaping item — three different styles of their signature baobob tree are available for 500L each.

Wolf quota is met in the Palouse-Hells Canyon zone on the Idaho/Oregon border-

The fourth Idaho wolf hunt zone has its quota of wolves killed. Eight zones are still open and four are now closed.  The quota for the newly closed zone was 5 wolves.  So far the reported kill overall is 129 131 wolves with 91 89 more to go, although it is likely that the fulfillment of sub-quotas, as just happened, will make the full quota of 91 more unattainable.

The Middle Fork Zone and the Southern Mountains will probably be the next zones to close because their quotas will be filled when one or two more wolves are killed in each of the zones.

12-22. More. Several hunting zones continue to lag in the number of wolves killed compared to their quotas. They are Panhandle where 14 of 30 tags have been filled, Lolo 7 of 27, and Salmon where only 4 of 16 have been killed.

Most interesting is the Lolo. This is the area where we have been told time and time again there are incredible number of wolves feasting on the chronically depressed elk herd. If so, why not more tags filled? Mark Gamlin has already pointed out that the hunting unit is rugged and remote. That is mostly true. However, it does have motorized access and a number of roads. It is not designated Wilderness. Units actually inside designated Wilderness, Selway 6 out of 17 and Middle Fork, 15 out of 17 are having better hunting success. By law these have no roads. I suspect the answer is that they have more wolves. I don’t know how wolves can persist in any great number in the Lolo year after year when the elk herd is so depressed (and I don’t doubt that the herd is depressed). In other words, I don’t think there are all that many wolves in the Lolo.

The Salmon hunting unit has been controversial. From the very beginning we have been told that wolves are all over the place just west and northwest of the town of Salmon. This unit has a lot of road access. It also has a lot of deer, elk, moose that winter in the Salmon River Canyon and its tributaries. Salmon City has always had an excitable element in its population — quick to speak loudly about all natural resources/environmental issues.  I think he Lolo and Salmon unit quotas are most likely political quotas rather than quotas based on wolf abundance.

This year’s tree is a little bigger than last year’s shrub. We visited a Christmas Tree farm in the hinterlands of New Jersey and picked out what looked like one of the smaller ones on the lot. With the fresh perspective of our living room and little salmon-colored couch, it looked a little larger. Enormous. But, Lolo loves it and can’t start her day without turning on the “Kis-kus Tree lights.”

Taking a break on Monday from a shoot for the second season of her BET reality show, “Tiny & Toya,” T.I.’s fiancée, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, talked up her latest project, a girl group called OMG Girlz.

Tiny, who knows a bit about being in a girl group thanks to her 1990s run in Xscape (not to mention her hand in penning TLC’s mega-hit “No Scrubs”), said she’s helping to shepherd the debut by the group, which features her daughter, Zonnique (a.k.a. Star) as well as the offspring of Lil Wayne and his ex-wife, Antonia “Toya” Carter, Reginae (a.k.a. Baby Carter).

The preteen/teen quartet (ages 11 to 13) also includes members Basha (a.k.a. Beauty) and Lourdes (a.k.a. Lolo). They got their start last year when Tiny and her production partner, Kiesha Babi, began talking to Zonnique about her singing ability and encouraging her to form a group. Zonnique was actually already a veteran of one short-lived two-girl act, QT Posse, and Tiny suggested she hook up with Reginae to see if they could get something going. When Baby Carter proved her inherited rhyming skills to Tiny, the music industry vet knew she was on to something. “She started rapping for me and I thought this would be great,” Tiny said.

As a mother and a survivor of the girl-group mill, Tiny’s making sure her daughter’s crew doesn’t fall into the usual music industry traps that are typical for young acts. “I’m definitely using my experience and telling them the things I’ve been through,” she said. “I don’t want them to go through things I went through, so I tell them stories so we can avoid going in that direction.”

OMG has played a few shows here and there, appearing at the SoulCircus in Charlotte, North Carolina, recently and at a charity event in Chicago, where they performed their first single, “Ain’t Nobody,” snippets of some of the other songs Tiny has helped write for them, and a few covers that they dance over.

“We’re getting calls all the time and we have shows booked through March,” said Tiny. So far, she’s co-written seven or eight songs for the group’s debut along with Babi, and the women have been encouraging the girls to get their feet wet with songwriting, since, as Tiny knows, that’s where the real money is. “Kiesha and I wrote ‘Ain’t Nobody,’ but Reginae wrote on that one too,” she said. “We’re trying to coach them to write, and they’ve come up with good stuff.”

The Timbaland-style “Ain’t Nobody,” which sounds like TLC-meets-Rihanna, is a teen love lament, with the girls complaining about boys they’re no longer interested in who won’t take a hint: “Ain’t nobody thinking bout you/ I ain’t never had a boy that be sweatin’ me bad as you do/ But I’m just not that into you/ I know it’s hard but you should try forgetting me,” they sing over a futuristic keyboard squiggle.

Baby Carter breaks in midway with a few bars in which she does Daddy proud, rapping, “My name is Reginae/ But you can call me Baby Carter/ They love me and they hate me cuz I’m Weezy F’s daughter/ Yeah, I’m a brat and I think it’s my world/ And I’m stuntin’ like my daddy, cuz I’m daddy’s little girl/ When I walk up in the spot, upgrades the room/ And if you standin’ next to me, I will upgrade you too.”

Despite some conspicuous-consumption lyrics (Baby says she wants a laptop and a Benz for her birthday), Tiny said the idea with OMG was to keep it clean and wholesome and provide some fun party music for younger fans. “It’s definitely music that’s OK for kids,” she said. The focus now is on finishing the album and getting a record deal, as “Ain’t Nobody” hits radio before the end of the year.

As for the girls’ famous fathers, Tiny said Weezy has already promised he’s working on a song for them that he’s going to finish before he goes to prison next year. “Tip, you know it! He already told Star he’s going to do a song with them,” Tiny said. “They’re excited.”

“Jerkin’ ” stars the New Boyz also want to get in on the OMG album, and one of Wayne’s protégé’s, Lil Chuckee, has already jumped on the remix of “Ain’t Nobody.”

I am a lolo and lola’s girl. According to my mom, I’m the only apo that stayed with my lolo and lola the longest. You see, I spent my childhood in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro at my grandparents’ house while my parents work on our business in Manila. I am very close to my maternal grandparents. They would stay with us whenever they go in Manila. We traveled with them as well. My Lolo went with us in Boracay when he was in his 80s and in Laoag, Ilocos Norte in his 90s. My mom said that my lola is very meticulous with me. She would bathe me in tea believed that give you nice complexion. I miss them terribly so, especially my Lolo.

So when I got sick during the Halloween season, it broke my heart especially that my lolo just passed away last year only. And they have been “visiting” me – no kidding. I would hear my lola calling me and smell my lolo’s pomade. I would feel their presence every day that passes that I haven’t visited them. So by the time I had the strength to go to the cemetry, I asked my mom to drive me and Peewee to visit them.

We went to the Libangan ng mga Bayani first early morning. My lolo was a Guerilla when world war II broke in the Philippines. He would tell me stories on how they hid in the jungles of Sierra Madre and kill Japanese soldiers. My lolo have tons of stories, how he quit smoking, how he met my lola, how he learned palm reading and his agimat. I am so lucky to have a lolo like him. He really lived his 103-year life to the fullest.

After Libangan ng mga Bayani, we headed to my lola at Loyola Memorial at Marikina. My lola is the epitome of a Filipina mestiza. She was very malumanay, mataray and mahinhin. I remember my lola doesn’t eat anything dark – chocolate, Coke, dinuguan. She would stick her tongue out of disgust seeing them. She said she doesn’t eat dark food because it may darken her skin. She’d always comb her hair and put powder in her face.

Now that they are gone, I will some day show pictures and tell stories about them to Peewee. Not a day goes by that I wish my lola and lolo see Peewee grow up.

On her own, Lolo picked up on the fact that there are generally two kinds of people in this world, boys (eh) and girls (awesome). And, from her potty book, she is very aware that she is a real girl just like “Prudence.” Since then, she’s shown a natural affinity for things that involve “real” girls. She craves her ballerina “dancing girl” pajamas, her plastic police woman figurine  and her fairy (fah-ee) girl sticker set.

The other day, I stopped by the “stoh” to pick up some replacement toothbrushes for the family, but they were out of the usual Sesame Street ones we get for Lolo. As we were exiting the aisle without a toothbrush, she started exclaiming “gahl, gahl, gahl too-bush”. She had spotted a Barbie toothbrush and was in love. The long hair, the stylish, flared denim pants and the twinkle in her painted-on-eye. She held onto it all day long. I made a mental note that this is where it begins: mothering a girlie girl.

We decided that until Santa arrives, she would completely enjoy a little dollhouse family to roleplay with. Suffice it to say that she wishes she was fashioned out of environmentally-friendly wood and 5-inches tall so she could more closely connect with this family. I mean really connect with them. The first day she had them, she just held them and moved them around the house together as if the having-ness was all she wanted to focus on. They were hers and they were wonderful.

A week later, she was totally into helping the family live out their suburban dreams. Stupidly, I gave into her polite request to bring the family on our dog walk. We bring books and toys all the time. Lolo keeps them in her lap or hands them to me when she’s done. Inexplicably, on this walk, at some point, without reason she tossed the real girl overboard. We were two blocks from returning home when I saw the “papa” doll slip out of her hand on the ground, so I did an inventory to make sure all the other family members were accounted for. I ransacked the stroller only to realize that we were down by the most important member of the team, the real girl. So, I trucked backwards through our dog walking route with my eyes glued to the leaf-laden ground. It was pointless I knew, but I did it anyway. In the end, I walked the same path three times over and only headed home because the sun was going down.

She didn’t get it. She walked in the door at home looking for the real girl in the playroom as if she would magically reappear. I was crushed. But, she just rolled on.

“No real girl here? Oh my look at that, there’s a real boy that the mama can take care of. His hair is nice, too.”

I did find a “Mexican Worry Doll” in one of my boxes of old stuff that I thought I could put to good use as a temporary replacement. I expected her to think it was awesome to have a girl back in the family. She looked at the doll with her old and dowdy dress, her head wrap that completely covers her hair, her cardboard arms (one of which is broken) and handed it back to me.

Do you have one of those games that brings back memories of your youth? I’m talking about memories from WAY back in the day, like even amongst your very first memories.

For me, one of those games is Adventures of Lolo.

But, don’t let the cute boxart fool you, this game will make your brain melt down.

Adventures of Lolo was released in 1989 by HAL Laboratory,Inc., the thinktank behind everyone’s cute, gluttenous pink puffball: Kirby. In fact, LoLo (and his female counterpart, LaLa) were recast in the Kirby’s Dreamland franchise as Lololo and Lalala.

Essentially, the game’s storyline is as such: an evil king/wizard dude kidnaps Lala and takes her away to a seemingly small castle that (somehow) has over 50 floors. Lolo, being the kind of blue sphere he is, goes off to rescue his beloved girl blob.

Yeah, that’s it. That’s all that there needs to be.

The gameplay is surprisingly simple. You go around the level collecting the heart-shapedtiles. Once all of them are collected, collect the gem inside the treasure chest to kill all enemies on the stage and proceed to either the next room or the next floor.

Sounds easy, right? Wrong!

There are enemies and obstacles in your way: worms that block anyone’s path, skulls that will attack when the treasure chest is open, ninja monsters that will shank you when you’re in their line of vision and medusa heads that will bust a cap in your undefined rear if you move in front of them. Not to mention blocks that you must move a certain way or face being trapped, water to cross and a level design that would make David Bowie’s Labyrinth look as difficult as a first grade spelling test.

But, don’t worry, if you get stuck in a level, just hit select and Lolo will commit graceful seppuku, allowing you to restart the level – one life lighter, of course.

You do have some weapons in your arsenal. Some heart containers give you special shots that can entrap an enemy in a shell. You can either shoot them again to bounce them off the stage, slip past them as they’re incapacitated or move them to either block another enemy or to ride them in the water.

Plus, in case you have to have a break from the insanity, there is a password system so you can pick up where you left off later.

With 50 levels of mind-numbing puzzles, Adventures of Lolo is a great addition to anyone’s game collection: NES or Virtual Console. It’s simplistic; but, his game proves that, sometimes, simplicity is better than flashy graphics and sweet music.

This guy guards the mean streets of Carmel, CA. For those of you who have never seen Carmel-by-the-Sea, it looks like a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale exploded on a bunch of sandy pines. Tooth-achingly sweet. Marvelous for photos.

I bought flowers for the home. My first time! I don’t buy flowers or even particularly care about getting them. But when it comes to Lillies, I make an exception. They smell so wonderful and look so flamboyant!

And why today of all days? Today, I didn’t clean my own home. I paid a wonderful lady to do it and I am so happy. She did a such a good job! She stooped to reach corners that I have pretended does not exist. She climbed to reach nooks that I, again, pretend not to notice gathering grey dust. She scrubbed the grease from my kitchen walls and the soap scum from the shower walls. 3 hours later, my home is sparkling and for the first time ever, I bought Lillies for the home.

In a way, I feel like I hit the reset button on my home. It feels so clean and new. I wish I could hit the reset button in other part of my life this easily.

She doesn’t totally understand this tradition yet, but from what she’s seen so far, she’s into it.

Number one on the list is this new food group called “can-ee.” Why anyone hasn’t supplied her with these scrumptious treats before is a mystery. She had a taste of a 3 Muskateers bar after her lunch on Halloween day and she was smitten. When she awoke from her nap and saw the basket of candy out of the corner of her eye, she burst into tears when I said that she couldn’t have any right then … until she had some grapes. Obviously, it was a lost cause … I gave her the chocolate and headed out to get some more from our neighbors.

Ipagpalagay nating sa heaven ako mapapadpad. Ihahatid ba ako mismo doon sa gate? May pagkain din kaya doon? Kapag namatay ba ako ng 75 years old ako yun din ba ang image na dala-dala ko dun ? Magkikita-kita ba kami ng mga nauna sa akin don? Lahat ba ng tanong ko ngayon ay masasagot nila doon? Magiging angel ba ako?

May heaven nga ba?

Heaven is being in a place that’s perfect, that you can do or get to do whatever you like, and there’s no consequence, no sin, no anything, except eternal happiness.

Since I haven’t been to Heaven I’ll just have to wait and see what will happen when the time comes.I hope to see you there one day. *wink*

It was painless. There were no tears whatsoever because they had anesthesia for “the childrens”. TV.

There was an actual wall of dated, battered and abused VHS tapes all with handmade labels telling of which character the plastic box held. The “stylist” asked if Lolo wanted to see Dora, whom she knows nothing about. I quickly scanned the collection and found what she needed to get the job done.

See that dazed look in her eye? She’s in Elmo’s world in that picture. A minute and a half later, it was done. The super long flap in the back isn’t really gone, just shortened.

El perro se ha comido mis rotuladores.

Gradualmente.

Hoy, el último negro que me quedaba. La semana pasada se comió los otros dos, y este creía que lo tenía escondido.

Creía.

Esta vez ha sido más dramática que las anteriores, y esto es porque se le ha destintado todo el puto chisme en la cara.

Después se ve que tras la sobredosis de tinta lo ha paseado por toda la casa arriba y abajo, mientras daba tiempo a que el grafitti se le secara en los morros y ahora, como el cacharro era permanente, no se lo puedo limpiar.

Hago un llamamiento desde aquí a todas las cadenas de televisión que me quieran ofrecer un reality, el perro tiene madera para el show business.

A ver si por lo menos así salimos de pobres.

Hoy se suponía el maravilloso y wonderful día en que nos iban a instalar el ADSL y el fijo en casa.

Pero no ha caído esa breva.

El pobre tipo instalador se perdió, un trámite habitual cuando decides venir a nuestra casa, por lo que hemos tenido que optar por la maniobra básica número uno: Ponerte en la terraza a dar saltos como una poseída agitando la primera camiseta de Davi que encuentres por el suelo para que se den cuenta de que no, no tienen que girar a la derecha, es todo recto. La maniobra número dos es desistir y bajar a la carretera a indicar el camino.

Pues en cuanto el señor de la compañía telefónica llegó hasta casa, nos vino con la magnífica noticia de que no podían instalarlo. No que no pudieran nunca, sino que hoy, por lo pronto, nanai.

Resulta que además de que aquí por no llegar no llegan ni los de la pizzería de abajo de la cuesta (literal, únicamente tienen que subirla, pero ni así se ubican), tenemos que contratar la compañía más cara porque es la única que ha cableado hasta aquí, y con la velocidad mínima evidentemente, no le pidamos peras al olmo. Y para colmo, el paisano decide después de verificar cajetines y yo que sé que más, que la toma de contacto que pusieron cuando lo contratamos  no  corresponde con la que tiene que utilizar, porque como esto es muy nuevo, no son conscientes de dónde coño tienen que sacar los cables.

Asique el tío fue y vino por donde había llegado, con nuestra consecuente desazón.

Y nosotros sin teléfono.

Que me llamarían, que me avisarían, que diera parte yo a atención al cliente, que me tengo que quedar sin fijo otros 20 días más gastando miles de euros al móvil, vaya.

Qué desesperación, y yo sola en casa con Lolo (Davi está en su primer día de digievolución a Técnico en Sonido) que vuelve a hacer como que no existo, campando a sus anchas e inundando el ambiente con sus gases condensados de felicidad por estar de nuevo en casa.

We are in event season ladies! Gala’s, Christmas Parties, soiree’s, Fundraisers, children’s performances, the symphony … the list could go on forever. What is a girl to do when the budget for new clothing is in the tank? Most women head to the big box discount stores to see “the sales” or what I call the drastically reduced cookie cutter clothes that fall apart after a few wears and washes. The problem is that these stores lure you in with low prices, you buy because it was on sale and most of the time that is the only reason you bought. I can hear the disagreement now – Nosey Parker, you know that we can buy four dresses at a discount store vs one at a high end boutique. That maybe true, but if it sits in your closet with all the other “on sale” items, you have wasted your money. I believe in investing in core pieces, mix & match and letting your local expert boutique owner help you out. Not only do they consider your body type, event and budget – they will get to know what you like and make sure you are not wearing the same dress someone else is to an event.

One of the best discount stores that carries designer brands is The Reclothery. Consignment shopping is “so in” right now but Rebecca has been around for years on The South Hill, offering very gently used higher end clothing that can meet anyone’s budget.  All of the fabulous boutiques also have sales and will barter with you where a national chain will not.

So why the headline “It’s Like Extortion!” – because seeing a sale tag or buy one get one free at a discount store is like seeing something inappropriate on tv – you don’t want to look but you do because it’s being flashed in your face. Promises are made but can’t be kept and usually it’s a marketing ploy to get your business. They think they have you. They suck you in and you end up with a closet full of nothing instead of a closet full of wonderful.

ya son 10 días y todavía faltan (si nada más se tuerce), unos 20.
Salimos de Isabela y pasamos la noche flotando a la deriva; no había viento.
Al segundo día igual. Al tercero, más de lo mismo pero con la diferencia de que tampoco teníamos motor al descubrir una fuga en la bomba de agua salada.
Buscamos el kit de recambio que compramos en España. Bien, encontramos el problema: un retén destrozado. Buscamos el recambio: vaya por Dios, no coincide y entonces nos cagamos en el mecánico que nos vendió el kit.
Lanzamos un “e-mail de emergencia” a nuestro equipo técnico de tierra (Oriol y Xavi) y nos dan muchas ideas además de ánimos. El viento sigue sin aparecer y nos empezamos a agobiar e incluso, empezamos a racionar el agua por si las moscas. Nos ponemos en contacto con la rueda de los barcos que hacen el mismo rumbo que nosotros y también nos dan ideas. Realizamos el arreglo de fortuna y listo!! hay motor pero entonces se apaga ya que hay como una pasta blanca en el gasoil que obstruye los inyectores…entonces nos cagamos en el “pájaro kuna” que nos vendió en Porvenir el gasoil con agua. Purgamos, cambiamos filtros y otra vez Constantino en marcha. Y ya con los ánimos más calmados, seguimos a la espera de que Eolo se ponga a trabajar.
Octavo día, a las 3 de la madrugada, empezamos a oír a Lolo (nuestro generador eólico) funcionar. Salgo corriendo a la rueda; abro la génova y me pongo a rumbo… uuuauuhhhh! que emoción sentir la vibración de Talula en mis manos a través de la rueda; aumentamos poco a poco de velocidad y en unas horas hacemos ya una punta de 8 nudos.
Y así ya llevamos 3 días, navegando con un mar un tanto desordenado pero moviéndonos.

PD2: Xavi/Oriol, mil gracias por todos vuestros consejos y por estar ahí dando ánimos y sobre todo, por hacernos reír Xavi, cuando a nuestras caras, ya les empezaba a salir surcos a los lados y hacia abajo.
