PROPOSED OLYMPIC LANES IN THE BLACKWALL TUNNEL

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is considering putting Olympic lanes into the Blackwall Tunnel, east London, which links the 2012 site to Greenwich.

A condition of hosting the Games is that the host city must designate a network of roads linking the venues, known as an Olympic Route Network.
The busiest sections of London’s network are likely to contain dedicated “Olympic Lanes” reserved for accredited Games vehicles only, to ensure athletes and VIPs arrive at events on time.
Unauthorised drivers could be fined up to £5,000 for using the lanes.

The ODA is considering putting Olympic Lanes in Blackwall Tunnel, which goes under the Thames and links the Olympic Village in Stratford to Greenwich Park and the O2 Arena.
Planning documents seen by BBC London estimate that closing one tunnel lane each way to normal traffic would prevent 1,700 eastbound vehicles and 650 westbound vehicles per hour from using it.
Ryan Acty of West Greenwich Conservatives wants the ODA to abandon the plan. He said that there is already enough problems caused by congestion with the Blackwall Tunnel and this will only exacerbate it.
“The traffic overflow would be just appalling – the whole of the A2 would be jammed up and all the roads that support it and bring the whole place to a standstill.”

Scotland Yard has warned businesses in London to expect a Mumbai-style attack on the capital.

In a briefing in the City of London 12 days ago, a senior detective from SO15, the Metropolitan police counter-terrorism command, said: “Mumbai is coming to London.”

The detective said companies should anticipate a shooting and hostage-taking raid “involving a small number of gunmen with handguns and improvised explosive devices”.

The warning — the bluntest issued by police — has underlined an assessment that a terrorist cell may be preparing an attack on London early next year.

Written by: Dale Neuburger Director, TSE United States In early October 2009, the International Olym

Written by: Dale Neuburger Director, TSE United States

In early October 2009, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) conducted its 121st Session in Copenhagen. Among its most important decisions was the selection of the site of the 2016 Olympic Games, choosing Rio de Janeiro over Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo.

Two months later, Copenhagen played host to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, bringing together many of the world’s most important political leaders whose agenda included finding ways to minimize the impact of global warming and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Two important meetings in the Danish capital, two months apart. Related? Seemingly not, but in reality, they are inextricably tied.

It is increasingly clear that sport organisations cannot deny or avoid the importance of the preservation of the environment when public authorities and non-governmental organisations use the visibility of major sport events to transmit powerful messages about sustainability and conservation.

Environmental issues occupy an increasingly important role in the sports world, and in the future, the convergence is likely to become more significant for sport organisations that conduct events, as well as for cities that host them. In part, this is based upon the reliance on public funds to provide the financial resources necessary to conduct major events, as well as the prevalence of “Green” political parties in Europe and elsewhere. Without question, there is significant environmental impact in staging events, including consumption of resources that impact air and water quality.

The Olympic perspective on “going green”

The IOC has provided leadership and commitment for almost two decades, defining the environment as the third dimension of Olympism, along with sport and culture. In 1994, the Olympic Charter was amended to recognize the critical importance of the environment and sustainable development, and one year later, it established a Sport and Environment Commission to monitor and guide the effort. Simultaneously, it encouraged National Olympic Committees to do likewise.

The bidding procedure for Olympic Games – Summer, Winter, and Youth – also has been modified during this time frame to reflect the importance of environmental issues. For applicant cities in the first phase, there is a section of the bid document that must address “Environmental Conditions and Impact,” asking cities to assess the environmental impact of hosting the Games, as well as to provide detail about current environmental initiatives and projects.

For cities selected to participate in the “candidate” phase, one of the themes is “Environment and Meteorology,” in which cities are asked to provide considerable detail on environmental management systems, assessment of environmental impact of construction projects, and integration of environmental protection systems into various vendor and supplier contracts.

While it is difficult to pinpoint with precision the first major event which incorporated green initiatives as a critical element in both event bidding and organisation, the Sydney Olympic Games is a primary example of successful integration of sport and social consciousness. The Australian Olympic Committee presented a compelling plan to reclaim a toxic wasteland outside the city as the main site of Olympic competition, and this strategy provided a competitive advantage over other bidding cities. The Games served as the catalyst in regenerating the Homebush Bay area, by providing park land, residential areas, and a major center for sport and recreational activity.

Although the Sydney Games were less than ten years ago, there has been remarkable progress in articulating and highlighting environmental sustainability on many fronts.

Clear trends in the bidding process

Event rights holders, at all levels, are requesting formalized and binding commitments in bid documents from prospective host cities, demonstrating evidence of environmental consciousness. The level of sophistication and complexity varies widely at this time, but there are some clear trends emerging:

Bid committees are providing creative solutions which reflect and reinforce public policy in their city, region, or country.

Bids that provide environmental solutions that transcend the timeframe of the event are highly preferred.

There is considerable transfer of knowledge among host cities that has provided impetus to innovation and technological advancement.

Because of the high visibility of major events, it is possible to encourage adoption of new standards, regulations, or codes in host cities, regions, or countries that otherwise might not occur.

The youth audience is an increasingly important target market for events at all levels, and sustainable environmental practices are widely supported by young constituencies worldwide.

Corporate sponsors are realising the benefits

Corporate sponsors can participate and derive benefit in events that are environmentally-friendly, showing social responsibility while simultaneously promoting their product or service. Being perceived as a “good corporate citizen” is highly desirable and can enhance the value of their investment. Sponsors are becoming more focused, as evidenced by the following:

There is increasingly direct sponsor linkage with projects that are environmentally sound and show concern for the welfare of the community.

Connectivity to spectators and fans through participatory activities is highly valued.

Benefit to sponsors can be extended well beyond the event itself, providing residual impact.

Opportunities to channel resources to education, particularly to youth and young adults, are mutually beneficial to the event, its spectators, and to the sponsor.

Coca-Cola, the longest continuous sponsor of the Olympic Games, has put forward an ambitious programme of activity for the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Significantly, it was created after extensive consultation with World Wildlife Fund – Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation, and it sets goals of 100% collection of all PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate, or clear polyester) containers in the Olympic Village and the venues during the Games, as well as 100% reduction in Olympic carbon emissions. This effort establishes a high degree of social responsibility which is expected to resonate with its target markets.

London 2012’s successful “green” integration

The London Olympic Games have embarked upon an ambitious and wide-ranging environmental programme which is likely to serve as a model for international sport organisations, bid cities, and event hosts. The organising committee put sustainability at the heart of its bid, using the tagline “One Planet 2012”, which was derived from the World Wildlife Fund/BioRegional programme called “One Planet Living”.
London’s vision focuses on five main areas throughout the various phases of the Games, from it successful bid in 2005 to the competition in 2012, including the following:

Initiatives that address issues of climate change

Policies that provide reduction of waste

Enhancement of biodiversity

Promotion of inclusion of persons of all races, religions, and cultures

Encouragement of healthy lifestyles characterized by regular physical activity

The emphasis on environmental sustainability will undoubtedly be more critical in the years to come, and the heightened levels of accountability for sport organisations and events mirrors the increased level of interest and urgency that has emerged in political contexts worldwide. Technical advice and individualized programmes that meet specific community needs will have high value, and sparked by the ambitious programmes in Vancouver and London, the bar will be raised considerably. The crossover of expertise from the political world to the sport world will necessitate innovative, technical solutions that will, undoubtedly, increase the value and influence of sport.

Now this is a very curious project – www.raisethecloud.org. If I read things correctly, it would appear that the plan is to raise some kind of high-level art work/monument/construction for people to visit, above London for 2012. It connects to digital media somehow and apparently the size will depend on the donations they receive from around the world. It would appear that they plan to crowdsource a large number of small donations.

Once built, visitors will contribute to the energy harvesting project simply by walking up to the top. Looks very high for a bubbly, transparent, and above all flexible looking structure.

I’d quite like to know more about the digital media aspect, its not clear what that is all about from the website.

All sounds very ambitious but interesting none-the-less.

80% of the food served at the Olympics will be sourced from local British businesses!

Hello food lovers and entrepreneurs! Here is some great news for those of you working in the UK food and catering industry: the London 2012 Organising Committee has recently pledged in its ‘Food Vision’ http://www.london2012.com/publications/food-vision.php to serve ‘the best of British food’ during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

And what fantastic opportunities for British businesses: 80% of the food served at the Olympics will be sourced from local British businesses – the remaining 20% being supplied by London 2012 commercial partners, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Cadburys etc.

The recently disclosed London 2012 Food Vision aims to set new standards for catering at UK events; Local, seasonal, healthier and sustainable standards will be favored. All dairy products, beef, lamb and poultry must be British. In addition, bananas, tea, coffee and sugar will be Fairtrade. And 100% of the 19 tonnes of eggs that will be served will have to be cage-free.

And to help you get a feel for the size of the operation – a whopping 14 million meals to be served, this roughly means businesses will need to supply some:

25,000 loaves of bread

232 tonnes of potatoes

82 tonnes of seafood

330 tonnes of fruit and vegetables

If you would like to be one of the lucky businesses that will cater at the Olympics, the search to find catering suppliers is now underway! For your chance of obtaining a piece of the 2012 pie (sorry couldn’t help it!) get your business onto www.competefor.co.uk And if you’re more pie filling than form filling let us foodies at Win That Bid give you a helping hand.

As you no doubt have heard by now, the IOC has decided that along with rugby, mixed doubles will be an event at the 2012 London Olympics for the first time since 1924. Please feel free to pause for a quick burst of the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus at this point.

No doubt the thinking is that either Laura Robson or Heather Watson will be able to partner Andy Murray to Team GB gold. But I think we should be thinking outside the box a little bit more. I know our attempts at nabbing Nole were a dismal failure, but what do you reckon to Operation Naturalise JJ? Go with me here.

Speaking for my people, I’m prepared to offer JJ whatever she wants. A rhinestone-encrusted tennis dress version of this outfit? Done. Mark Foster as her own very personal assistant/shopper/gigolo/mode of transportation? Done. To soothe any Serbian ructions, we would at this point be more than willing to give back Alex Bogdanovic.

Failing that, I say we just put one of the Murray brothers in a skirt. Yes, it will be Jamie.

Olympic organising body LOCOG has finally submitted its planning application for using Greenwich Park during the 2012 games. The application went in on 30 November, but details have only now been made public. The summary on Greenwich Council’s website reads:

The temporary use of the site for the hosting of the Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon events (including the Test Event in 2011) for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The temporary structures include a 23,000 seat arena, training areas, stabling, a cross country course, operational and site set up and removal compounds, vehicular and pedestrian access areas, operational parking and ancillary structures.

Details can be found on the London 2012 website, or from Greenwich Council’s planning department.

I understand NOGOE, the body campaigning against the Games coming to the park, is planning to hold a meeting in mid-late January to work out its response.

The logo for the 2014 Winter Olympics, to be held in Sochi, Russia, has been unveiled today, becomin

The logo for the 2014 Winter Olympics, to be held in Sochi, Russia, has been unveiled today, becoming the first Olympic emblem to feature a web address – Sochi2014.ru – as organisers target the digital generation.

The new brand was unveiled at a press conference by Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and chief executive of Sochi 2014, Dmitry Kozak, deputy prime minister of Russia, Alexander Zhukov, deputy prime minister of Russia and Jean-Claude Killy, chairman of the IOC’s coordination commission for Sochi 2014.

Chernyshenko said: “We believe this is an historic day for Russia and for winter sport. Sochi 2014 has always been about being a gateway to the future and our new brand demonstrates that commitment more strongly than ever.

”To prove our commitment to innovation, Sochi 2014 will have a clearly digital Games emblem. Today, we welcome tomorrow. We are offering an invitation, an icon and an inspiration to people from across the world to celebrate the thrill of Russia’s first Olympic Winter Games.” The Sochi 2014 brand was developed by brand consultancy Interbrand and an Expert Brand Council established by the Sochi 2014 organising committee. The Brand Council included leading figures from sport, branding and marketing, and the arts, with a mixture of Russian and overseas experts. Sochi 2014 began the brand development process by surveying people from Russia and several countries around the world, gathering thousands of ideas and insights that have been used as building blocks for Sochi 2014’s new brand.

London’s 2012 Olympic logo caused a storm of controversy when it was unveiled by the design agency Wolff Olins in 2007. Londoners called for it to be axed, dubbing it an “embarrassment”, “hideous”, “childish” and “ugly”. The logo for the Winter Games has been designed to provide a clear emphasis on reaching new audiences through digital platforms. It features the web address “sochi2014.ru”, with the “Sochi” placed on top of the “2014″, typographically mirroring each other, which is meant to reflect that Sochi is the meeting point between the sea and the mountains. The Olympic rings sit in their original colours beside the web address.

Commenting on the Sochi 2014 logo, Fred Burt, managing director of design agency Siegel+Gale London, said: “I’m no fan of London 2012 identity so it’s a relief to see Sochi 2014 restore some sanity. “As a logo it should work well in small sizes and next to other partner logos — key from a commercial point of view. It feels fresh and up-to-date, promising a new Russia that perhaps the wider world does not know [think how Beijing benefitted in this regard].

“I’ll be interested to see how the URL plays out — has the system been designed to drop the ‘.ru’ in certain circumstances? But I’d applaud Sochi’s commitment to driving their audience to a URL, something that will allow them to control the experience much more directly. “The typographical mirroring of the ‘h/y’ ’s/z’ and ‘0/o’ feels clumsy, however, and undermines the symmetry of the logo. But as ever, it’s the experience not the logo that will make this brand.”

Rogge, IOC president, said: “The Sochi 2014 emblem will become one of the most visible and recognised marks for people of all ages from around the world over the next few years, especially as Sochi 2014 has made a conscious effort to link its brand to the digital generation. “Thanks to the growth of social media, the Sochi brand will no doubt spread like never before through these online channels reaching the youth of the world quickly and in a format that they appreciate.”

The emblem has been designed to actively encourage dialogue between Russians, nations and winter sports fans — particularly youth — through Sochi 2014’s online platforms. Sochi 2014 said the brand centres around the idea that the 2014 Winter Games will be a celebration of sporting achievement, while also providing momentum for positive change. The Games’ tagline is ‘Gateway to the Future’, which will be used to promote Sochi 2014 as a catalyst for long-lasting sporting, social, economic and environmental legacy. The new Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games brand will be launched later this month.

It seems like a blink of an eye since it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympic

It seems like a blink of an eye since it was announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, the first time in over six decades but we are now less than 1,000 days until the opening ceremony on 27th July 2012. Yet it still seems a little early for businesses to be thinking about the impact London 2012 will have on them.

Over the course of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the UK will receive an estimated 9.2 million visitors. There will be 14,500 athletes from 205 countries, 21,000 media & broadcasters, 70,000 volunteers, 15,000 coaches & officials. There will be 34 Olympic competition venues across the country, including Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Weymouth. There are also 639 training facilities, with only 96 in London, and there will be 30 live sites, or public screen areas, across the country. All of which means there will be many parts of the country that feel the impact of London 2012.

To help businesses prepare, Porter Novelli’s client BT, is working in partnership with Cisco to create a community where businesses can come together to discuss issues around London 2012, share their experiences, plan their approach and spread best practice. In short, to become Business Ready. As well as helping UK businesses make the most of the opportunity, the overarching aim of the project is to create a legacy of business knowledge that can be passed on to Rio 2016 and beyond.

The community is currently based on Linkedin but will evolve during the run up to London 2012 along with the needs and desires of the group. We’re very excited to be part of the community and can’t wait to see how it develops over the coming weeks, months and years.

The London 2012 Olympics has approached advertising and media agencies with a brief to communicate transport changes around the Games. The Olympic Delivery Authority, the public body responsible for developing and building the infrastructure for the Games, is looking for a number of shops to handle public-service campaigns aimed at informing Londoners about transport developments or upheaval.

The brief covers disciplines including advertising, media buying, digital, CRM and PR. The winning agencies will be briefed to create campaigns such as door-drops in the most affected areas, posters at Tube stations, TV executions and online updates to keep the public, workers and spectators informed of any day-to-day changes.

These will include information on such transport issues as travel to and from all of the sites, including the Olympic Village in Stratford and the rowing venue in Eton; any transport disruptions or road closures caused by the Games; any changes caused by building work in the run-up to the event; and any disruption once it has finished.

Agencies will also be briefed to highlight upcoming changes to the transport infrastructure because of the Games, such as the extension of the East London Line, the extension of the DLR and the introduction of the Olympic Javelin – a 12-carriage train that reaches speeds of up to 225kmph and can travel from the Olympic Park to King’s Cross in just seven minutes

1,804 signatures later and a lot of hard work by Sarah and Holly from Journalista as well as my office staff, I handed in today the petition calling on the Metropolitan Police to keep their specialist unit dedicated to combatting human trafficking. My sincere thanks to each and every one of you who signed the petition – 1,804 was an excellent achievement and just shows the strength of feeling about the trafficking of people for profit.

In line with the usual procedure, I presented the petition this morning at the meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority Board chaired, of course, by Mayor Boris Johnson. Also in attendance (amongst others) were Labour GLA Members John Biggs, Joanne McCartney and Toby Harris and the Green AM Jenny Jones. I would like to pay a special tribute to Jenny, pictured, who has been a consistently strong supporter the petition and has worked hard for many years on the trafficking issue.

In presenting the petition, I was allowed to speak for five minutes. Concentrating on Europe and London, I told the Board how during the football World Cup in Germany there had been a significant increase in prostitution and that most of the prostituted women had been trafficked for the purpose. It would be appalling if the same were to happen in London for the 2012 Olympics.

My second point was an explanation as to why the conviction rates for trafficking are low, namely that the victims of trafficking, often locked away and unable to go out very far, are frightened and vulnerable and therefore very unlikely to report what is happening to them. Interestingly Sir Paul Stephenson, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, denied that the conviction rate was anything to do with the closure of the trafficking unit.

The real issue, as ever, was money. In 2007 the Home Office provided the Met Police with £1.8 million for the specialist trafficking unit on the understanding that this would go down the following year and that thereafter the Met would be expected to find the money for the trafficking unit out if its own budget. The Home Office duly gave the Metropolitan Police £700,000 last year. This year, it would seem, rather than finding the finance, the Met intend to close the unit.

I was very pleased that the Politics Show London filmed outside City Hall. (They were not allowed into the Board meeting). There has been considerable media interest in the petition, which again illustrates just how important it is that we do all we can to eliminate the vile crime of trafficking human beings, a modern form of slavery.

My predictions about Jade Johnson’s Strictly Come Dancing destiny came crashing to the ground this w

My predictions about Jade Johnson’s Strictly Come Dancing destiny came crashing to the ground this weekend as Jade she had to withdraw from the competition following a serious injury sustained in a rehearsal for the show.

It seems that dancing, just like sport, is unpredictable and you can never know when illness or injury will throw a competitor of the course they seemed so likely to follow.

Long Jumper Jade was visibly upset when she was interviewed on the show on Saturday night. This is understandable, she is a professional athlete and her desire to win and succeed in the competition was probably greater than any of the other participants.

The Strictly audience at Television Centre seemed equally disappointed by Jade and her partner Ian Waite’s departure. As did the fans who write into its daily sister show, It Takes Two, presented by Claudia Winkleman.

So I was surprised to read in an ongoing debate on the BBC’s 606 website, a discussion forum for sports fans, that so many were disgruntled by Johnson’s performance on the reality TV show.

Displeased Athletics fans

In fact it wasn’t so much her performance, or her pulling out that has irritated sports fans, but her very decision to appear on the show.

Some have called it irresponsible and foolish. Whilst others have called for her Lottery Funding to be withdrawn considering the fact that she has been training for dancing, and not her athletic event the Long Jump.

There is a small chance that the ligament injury that Jade has sustained will hamper her future career, as she prepares to make a return to Athletics in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

If it did then I’m positive that there would be none more angry and upset than Jade herself, she does not need a load of uninformed members of the public putting her down for the choices she has made.

Besides, Jade knows, and so do the majority of the British public that the kind of problem she is suffering from could have been picked up just as easily in everyday life or in any sort of recreational activity that all athletes participate in during the off season, than in practicing for a samba or a waltz.

But it is more than likely that she will make a full recovery and be able to return to training in time to fulfil her goal of a place on the podium in 2012.

Positives

In my opinion, which is contrary to that of most of the 606 commenter’s, I think Jade’s participation in the show has been a positive thing, both for her and the sport she represents.

Ok so she wasn’t exactly preparing for her chosen sport but the training of a professional dancer is not that far removed from than of an athlete and I’m sure that the overall body conditioning would have been good for her, especially since she hasn’t been doing full time training in the pit for so long.

Secondly, and I’m not saying this is why she chose to participate, but the money she has been paid for her part in the show can’t have failed to have helped her financially.

The only comment on 606 that talked any sense was one which said something like receiving Lottery funding is not the same as winning the Lottery. I don’t know how much Jade is to receive but I don’t imagine it is an extravagant sum, athletics is not the most lucrative of sports, so the money she has earned from Strictly will undoubtedly help her as she trains over the winter.

Finally Jade Johnson’s appearance on the show will have done wonders to boost the profile of athletics and athletes in this country, which is always a much needed thing.

She said herself in an interview on It Takes Two earlier this week that she thought that in the early rounds of the competition no-one would vote for her because no-one knew who she was, no matter how good her dancing was.

One thing is certain come 2012 (fingers crossed), there will be many Strictly fan tuning into the Olympics to watch Jade in action in the pit, to see if her Long Jumping is up to the standard her athleticism and leaps across the dance floor have indicated.

That can only be a good thing. I for one wish Jade a speedy recovery. A personality who can crossover from her profession to the entertainment industry is exactly what athletics and sport in this country needs.

When – 27th July – 12th August 2012 – Summer Olympics Game

29th August – 9th September 2012 – Paralympic Games

London has also been a host the Olympic Games held in the year 1908 and 1948, this is the third time that the Olympics will be held in London. The games will take place at several venues. Most of these venues are specially constructed for the purpose of Olympics. Besides the new venues, the already existing historic venues will also offer a variety of facilities that are needed in these games. The committee responsible for organizing Olympic Games in London is headed by Lord Coe. The committee is in charge of running the games and following the success of bid. On the other hand Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is responsible for the construction of required infrastructure. The finances for the games are too high and thus the escalating cost is considered to be an ongoing problem. In fact the logo of London 2012 Olympics is also controversial but, still the spirits are high and there is a lot of enthusiasm amongst the people of London.

The preparation for the Olympics is going on with great energy. More than 300000 plants are also being grown in the wetlands at the Olympics Park. Although all the events to be held during the London Olympics will be scattered in several areas of the capital but, most of it will take place in the region of Stratford. The other regions involved in staging the events include 5 boroughs of London – Newham, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets. Around 200 nations will participate in 2012 Olympics Games which will feature around 20 sports. Softball and baseball games will not be included in 2012 Olympic Games.

London Olympics 2012

Some of the most popular London attractions such as O2 Arena, Aquatics Centre, Velopark, Horse Guards Parade and Hyde Park will also be included in the list of Olympics venues where events will be held. The London Olympics 2012 will also bring a boom in the travel industry of London as millions of tourists will also come down to the city either to take part in the Games or to enjoy the games. Thus the London hotels and other major accommodations have already started preparing for the games. The hotel industry in London has always been extremely welcoming and it has always given a wide range of options to the tourists. So this time also you can expect the hotels to offer a variety of packages which can easily suit your pockets. Besides the London hotels, the London transport, London restaurants and all the major London attractions are also getting ready in order to offer the best of services to the tourists.

With such a pace of preparation, London will surely be able organize the London 2012 Olympics successfully. So you also get ready and plan your visit to London to explore the Olympic Games 2012.
