Now, onto something other than London’s Christmas lights…

Theatre

A few weeks before my trip, I had proposed to see a musical to Miles. We were looking into tickets for Les Miserables. I usually wouldn’t mind spending money on good performances, but the regular pricing for Les Mis was expensive, especially after traveling and seeing concerts so much already. We decided that we could just drop by the theater on the day I arrived (Saturday).

We walked around different ticket booths, but Les Mis was sold out. There were still tickets for Avenue Q, so we got them for 15 pounds each! I saw Avenue Q in New York City in 2008, but it was a musical that I liked and knew I’d want to see again – so I jumped into this opportunity without hesitation.

No, I didn’t actually go onto The London Eye, but I did enjoy the view of it. Have you noticed already? I’m a sucker for colorful lights reflecting on water.

We walked all over the city after seeing Avenue Q. The picture was taken on Millennium Bridge, with St. Paul’s Cathedral right ahead of us.

I was eating fish and chips (delicious too) next to the towers, and an old man sat down next to me. From the corner of my eye, I noticed that he turned towards me and looked like he wanted to talk to me. Finally, he started the conversation, “Are you from Japan?” I smiled (and gave the answer that I’ve said so many times), “No, I’m not Japanese, but a lot of people think I am.”

“Oh, sorry. You looked like one…. Konichiwa.”

We chitchatted about London. The old man has retired already, so he goes around different parts of London everyday to enjoy the city while he can – “Everyday is like a holiday!” Before I left, he put a small origami crane in my palm, “Here is for good luck.”

An impromptu performance at the road-side by the London Eye.

Dit weekend zijn m’n ouders langsgekomen. Was erg leuk om ze weer te zien, maar ook wel een beetje gek, het voelde meer of ik een weekend met ze op vakantie hier was, alleen ’s nachts was het verschil dat ik in m’n eigen bed sliep. Verder hebben we veel de tourist uitgehangen, vrijdag de London Eye op gegaan.

Zaterdag zijn we naar Covent Garden, de Tower of London en de musical We Will Rock You gegaan.

En zondag wat rustiger aan gedaan met een heerlijke afternoon tea bij Fortum & Manson en de kerstafdeling van Harrods.

It took weeks and weeks of planning, but the parents finally were able to make the journey from the land of cacti, across the pond, and into londontown. The week went by fast with daily touring, play watching, essay writing, train riding, and rain battling. Although they may not feel like they did much, in reality I saw more than I have all semester in London, so either I am pathetic, or we really got around.

took an off season tour of the Globe and saw the beautiful painted sky…

walked across the Millennium Bridge as I explained it significance to Harry Potter…

drove under Tower Bridge with a overly friendly Australian…

looked and walked up to the Tower of London, which I came to find out didn’t look at all like a tower…

mother continued with her love for digital photography…

and father learned the horrors of the tower…

then we got on a boat…

after a day of locking myself in my room to type out an essay, we took a train to visit the Queen at her lovely weekend getaway, Windsor Castle…

after a day running around in the british monsoon, we sat down for tea, which unfortunately included cultural food…

the final day we chose to ride the Eye, which always includes meeting the local street performers…

on the Eye, we waved comically to other air traveling tourists and we reached the height of over 400ft over London…

Beth kindly accompanied us on the journey…

in the end we actually ended up “seeing” all of London, a trip wonderfully concluded.

Oh London, my city, I miss you. Taken from the base of the London Eye across the River Thames.

Some of you may have been wondering where we have been these past few weeks?  Well, we were out of the country enjoying a much needed vacation to the UK.  We spent a total of fifteen days just running around London and parts of Scotland, with a side trip to Paris.  Here is a sample of photos taken with the Minox Leica.

O fotógrafo britânico Carl Warner, famoso por compor cenários feitos apenas com alimentos, revelou sua mais nova obra: uma versão comestível dos maiores símbolos de Londres.

Warner usou 26 frutas, legumes e verduras para recriar locais icônicos da capital britânica, como a Torre de Londres, a catedral de Saint Paul, o Big Ben e a roda gigante London Eye.

A imagem foi encomendada pelo canal de TV britânico Good Food para divulgar o lema “a gente se diverte com comida”.

Durante três semanas, Warner contou com a ajuda de cinco profissionais que o ajudaram a construir a grande maquete feita de comida.

O maior desafio da equipe foi manter a aparência dos alimentos para que parecessem frescos na foto final. Outro dilema foi escolher a fruta, o legume ou a verdura correta para traduzir a grandeza dos principais símbolos da cidade.

Na foto, os relógios do Big Ben foram substituídos por rodelas de limão, uma melancia ganhou a forma da cúpula da catedral de Saint Paul e os pilares da Torre de Londres foram montados com baguetes.

No início do ano passado, Warner criou as chamadas “foodscapes” (união das palavras food – alimentos – e landscape – paisagem) mostrando cavernas submarinas, florestas, praias ao pôr do sol e até cachoeiras feitas de frutas, legumes, queijos, frios e massas, entre outros.

Um dos obejtivos de seus projetos é promover uma alimentação mais saudável entre as crianças.

I can’t even begin to express how amazing it was to have Madre here and on how many levels.  Above all, though, it was great to have a bit of home in London with me — it was still an adventure, but I got to have my favorite companion by my side.

In typical Sunday style, we headed to mass at Our Lady of Victories, but the London flare was definitely there: 11:30am Latin mass with a gorgeous choir (personal highlight: being able to kiss Madre during the sign of peace! It was great to not be a loner for once!)!  We then headed up Kensington High Street to Kensington Church Street, where we stopped for brunch at the Kensington Wine Rooms (another establishment I frequently pass and always dreamed of going to!).  Sufficiently fortified, we headed up to Notting Hill Gate and back onto The Big Bus for another sightseeing route through London!  We hopped off at Westminster Bridge to spend some quality Kodak time with the London Eye and Big Ben, Madre’s new crush.  Once we were chilled to the bone, we hopped on the Tube at Westminster station and got off at South Kensington.  Yet another dining dream of mine came true when we stopped for a light dinner at Carluccio’s before heading home to the LVH for another sound snuggly sleepover.

Here it is: the Madre’s Visit series!  Disclaimer: we took a ton of pictures, we ate a lot of food (I almost forgot how much I missed it), and we made a lot of magical memories.  Here’s my attempt at documenting it all; a lot of the posts will be works-in-progress as I update them with little details I forgot/didn’t take the time to initially include–I know we have an eager audience awaiting!  Enjoy   I know we did!

After a very Love Actually airport reunion, Madre and I hit the Londontown running!  First, we headed to the London Visitor’s Hotel in Kensington to drop off Madre’s luggage; the LVH is a quaint little bed & breakfast style hotel with an extremely welcoming staff, but the best part is its close location to my flat in South Kensington!  From there, we walked through our ‘hood to my flat, stopping for a pub lunch at The Gloucester Arms and several Kodak moments — we soon realized that we were capturing Madre’s visit to London, my semester in London (flying solo makes getting pictures with yourself in them quite tricky), and our time together (again, only two makes it tricky, but we definitely capitalized on the kindness of strangers and waiters).  Next on the agenda, taking a very wise arrival activity cue from Madre’s The Unofficial Guide to London (the same trusted series we get all of our Walt Disney World advice from), was to purchase two 48-hour tickets for The Big Bus Company’s hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus tour of London.  We caught one of the last buses and, thanks to the ridiculously early sunset at 4:30pm, Madre got to see all of the London sights for the first time in their twilight glory.  We hopped off at Marble Arch, the end of the route, and grabbed a spot o’ tea (like the real Brits) before embarking on Madre’s first ride through London on a red double-decker bus (“yes, those really are the public buses!”).  Then, the jet lag hit, so we made a quick change of route to South Kensington where we stopped for a delicious Italian meal at Il Falconiere (the first of many delicious, spot-hitting meals).  I grabbed sleepover supplies for the next two nights; we were met outside, after already being freezing, by rain and a black cab…magic moment!  We hopped in, headed ‘home’ to the LVH, and snuggled the night away–the one thing I missed about home most of all!

Ok so today I decided that sometime in the future I would love to travel to Paris and London…

You see when I was a kid I always wanted to go to Paris, I was obsessed with going there one day and seeing the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Musee du Louvre and so so so much more…

So I have like NO money whats so ever!

I am handing my resume in to loads of places tomorrow and hoping to get any job plus the place I used to work at know I am looking for a job and will let me know as soon as one is available for me…

So Meaghan and I were talking and we’ve decided that we will go to London together and hopefully America at some point…

Le sigh…

If only we had the money now…

You know what sucks…

Last year I had the money and I had the chance to go to England, Wales and Ireland but I never went because I wanted to finish up my contract…

Then I just never booked it again and my parents ended up needing the money for a new car…

BAH!

So now I am waiting on them to pay me back the money over the next two years…

Until then I am going to get a job and earn some more cash…

Or Meaghan and I will win the lotto

Ahhh! Pointless blog I know but still…

I really wanna go to Paris and London….

Especially Paris its been a dream of mine for so so so long…

But the only thing with going to France is learning French!

I was learning it earlier this year but I just kinda stopped so now I have to enrol in a class for next year while I got to college and do Legal Services or Medical Business Administration…

Ahh I hate thinking about going to Paris or London because it just makes me wish I had of gone to London when I had the chance…

Or even America!

About 6 years ago my Aunty offered to take me to America with her, but I was in school and I really didn’t want to leave for 6 months…

I wish I had of now, living in America for 6 months would have been worth it plus I would have gone to an American Highschool while I was there…

Can’t believe I turned down that opportunity!

So now I plan on going overseas and I am hoping it will be before I turn 25…

So for now I dream and look at the tours and think about what I would like to do…

And learn French lol…

• London City: The City Zone como así se le conoce al distrito financiero de Londres alberga las empresas más importante del mundo, por ello, se puede distinguir su paisaje del resto de la ciudad por los numerosos rascacielos predominantes en esa zona. Pero no sólo en la City pueden ver edificios de oficinas, en el centro de la ciudad el visitante podrá observar la Torre de Londres, el London Bridge, el museo de Londres, el mercado central de Londres y la Capilla de San Pablo.
• El Támesis: Es el río principal de la ciudad, y entorno a el se enmarcan algunos de los iconos más característico de la ciudad londinense. Si decide realizar un paseo en barco desde el embarcadero de Westminster, podrá contemplar la ciudad de Westminster, la ciudad de Londres, deteniéndose en la Torre de Londres, el London Eye. En la zona de Westminster se encuentra el Buckingham Palace es la residencia oficial de la reina en Londres, aunque éste es usado para ceremonias, visitas de Estado, visitas turísticas y alojamiento ocasional de la reina.
• Trafalgar Square y Soho: Es una pequeña área del Londres urbano, separada del río y de los principales parques, donde se situan la National Gallery (museo), la plaza de Trafalgar, el Teatro Palace y Picadilly Circus. Este último es el centro neurálgico de la ciudad donde londinenses y turistas acuden para realizar sus compras así como para disfrutar de la vida nocturna (Soho).
• Covent Garden: Siguiendo la rivera del Támesis nos encontramos con Convent Garden. Esta parte de Londres ocupa el espacio comprendido entra las dos ciudades de la capital: Westminster y la City. En ella se pueden visitar la Royal Opera House, el Museo de Transporte de Londres y el mercado central, donde se dan cita numerosos puestos y mercados ambulantes.
• South Bank: Es el gran complejo de esparcimiento de la ciudad de Londres. Aquí, museos de temáticas diversas se alternan con teatros, salas de conciertos, restaurantes y la catedral del sur. Los lugares más recomendados para visitar son: las salas de conciertos y festivales Royal Festival Hall y el Queen Elisabeth Hall; el BFI London Imax Cinema, para ver peliculas en 3D y el famoso Ojo de Londres o London Eye, la segunda noria más alta del mundo, tras Singapur. El British Airways London Eye fue inaugurado en el 2000 para celebrar la entrada del milenio. Situado frente al Parlamento, no tardó en establecerse como una de las atracciones mejor organizadas y de mayor calidad de la capital. Los viajeros disfrutan en una de las 32 capsulas de las que se componen la noria, de las mejores vistas de la ciudad, divisando el horizonte londinense en un recorrido que dura 30 minutos.

La mejor manera para moverse de forma rápido por Londres es utilizando su Metro. La red de Metro de Londres es operada por London Regional Transport y gestiona 11 líneas repartidas por toda la ciudad y su área metropolitana. Aunque si lo que desea es viajar observando el paisaje, sin duda alguna, la opción más acertada es tomar una de las 700 rutas en los autobuses rojos de dos plantas, característicos de esta ciudad.

The skies were quite threatening but the light was really good when we got to the Eye!  I’m just really glad we didn’t get rained on the entire morning!!   These Infrared cameras still amaze me with their ability to pick up tones, contrasts and textures especially in the skies & clouds.

The shot of Big Ben below was taken with a Sony DSC-F717 (with a Hoya R72 & ND8 filters).  It was completely different to process as the lighting was all wrong (in that the skies were bright and the trees etc were dark), but in the end I’m quite pleased with the result!!
