One thing about living so far north is that when we break out of the dreary winter months it happens

One thing about living so far north is that when we break out of the dreary winter months it happens FAST. The most noticable part of the impending summer isn’t the change in weather – it is the change in sunlight. Right now we are gaining about 5 minutes of light per day – simple math tells me that’s more than half an hour a week.

This morning the sun came up at 4.34 am. We don’t have proper blinds in the bedroom yet (didn’t seem so necessary when we renovated the room in November), so it was fully sunny and the cat was running around the house by 5.00 am. This led to an early start on the day.

I had to go by the garden shop for some soil and manure, but it didn’t open till 10.00 am. So before heading out for groceries and soil I managed to:

Split off the remaining tomatoes (fairly successfully at that)

Plant chard on the balcony

Plant more lettuce (~3 weeks after first round)

Get some of my little peas into starter pots

Prep beets and kohlrabi seeds for planting – they germinate faster if you set them in a damp paper towel for a couple of hours ahead of time

I also managed to decide what I would make for dinner and get a more-strategic-than-usual grocery list made. This is quite possibly my most productive lazy Sunday morning ever.

Kohlrabi and beets go for a hydrating day at the spa.

Twelve little tomatoes! Might need to give some away.

And the day didn’t end there! After grocery shopping and buying 340 liters of cow poo and garden soil I loaded up the car and took a lazy drive down to the colony lot. Typically I walk down, but lugging 340 liters of heavy dirt in easily torn bags didn’t sound like a good start to the afternoon.

I took down my bean starts (which had become huge), early potatoes, onions, and the kohlrabi and beet seeds. I also took some nasturtiums down to see if I could convince them to crawl up the new fence.

The cherry tree in the courtyard is blooming!

A lot of soil and cow poo.

The biggest problem at the garden today was that they haven’t turned the water on yet. Instead I had to haul down three two-liter bottles of water, and then refill them when I ran out. I hope they turn the water on soon – it is a lot of work to import water to a newly planted garden!

In the ground at the colony lot today:

Bush beans

Beets

Onions

Kohlrabi

Early potatoes (with nice purple flowers!)

I also halfheartedly dug in all of the manure and soil. I’m hoping it will rain in a couple days and it will incorporate that way.

My first try at onions

Beans with beets in between.

I see you!

This evening I might do even more work on the balcony. I bought a new rosemary to replace the one that is barely hanging on, and I also need to get the lemon mint and thyme into some soil.

But for now I think I need a cold beer and a few minutes with my feet up!
