I’m in massachusetts!
it is nice to be in massachusetts with my extended family, that is, two of my aunts and my grandma. today I was talking to my grandma about much of her memories. I think the next time I talk to her I would like to know more about my own mom! and everything she did, as well as my aunts. they had some pretty crazy pasts, and its nice to hear my grandma talk about things, and she likes to talk. I don’t like to talk as much. sometimes I feel very resentful even of my extended family because it feels like they want something from me, they are pushing, even though they are far away, and that is hard to deal with.

but again, focusing on memories, and talking and just people as they are is a good way to move past the UGH please stop asking me things I don’t WANT this relationship to be difficult annoyance that rises up in me.

and, I do feel very disconnected from my own past/family sometimes and maybe in the future I can start to remedy that, so I am not as angry at my parents for not being there for me. stop thinking about the past as a bad thing, start thinking about relationships as forward moving and changing and maybe essentially unfulfilling? that everything has its flaws and goods. and so on. I would like to get a better sense of who I am in terms of my family, my own mother! it may be years before I can have conversations with my dad in any sort of that vein. I’ve always disavowed that family or heritage makes you who you are, but maybe it does in some way, and at the very least its a connection and a talking point. people are so good.

but I do enjoy being here, close to the sea! as well and in a comfortable house where everyone can sit and read in the same room together and it isn’t weird.

1. what I should be doing today!
working on my paper for myth in literature. I would really like to do my paper on yeats because I might be going to ireland next fall to study irish nationalism, myth and landscape in the context of peace and conflict in Ireland. oh boy! the problem is that I don’t really like yeats, in fact, I kind of hate him. and he makes me kind of sad and irrelevant-feeling, because he is very dense and stylized and escapist, even, in his drama and poetry

catching up on the journals I skeeved out on for that class. ugh. that class is good, but it makes me feel a big bleak and pale sometimes. I need to figure out what journals I have for what, also.

also, reading for that class, the valkyrie (sp?)–wagner—oh it all just feels so decadent and elitist! can’t handle it. I like it, but I’m tired of it, the self-indulgence of myth and metaphor. give me poems about soil and myths of seasons and gods of people and earth, please. but, not yet. this first.

I feel like part of my ugh-ness on account of that class is that I haven’t been immersing myself in it as much as I could be. its a really tough class with a lot of really dense reading, and I’ve been skimming and skimping lately. not enough time? too much time? so, so, tired.

doing my paper for ascetics, saints and sinners: using aquinas’s style and basic beliefs to address “the sperminator”- an article on impregnating women with semen from dead men. should be fun! but I’m not doing it yet. this class is a lot of fun and seems relevant, but other times not so much. I am very curious about how god is a metaphor concerning the body, which is not something we’ve talked about at all, well sort of, with women mystics and christ as a metaphor, and suffering. maybe over the break? probably not. but this class in conjunction with myth in literature is kind of an interesting contrast.

reading emma, waverley and the italian, and apologizing for missing two classes in a row (that puts me up to five missed classes this semester, EEP). on the other hand, I don’t really care if I get straight b’s this semester. well, I’ll get an A in bjorn’s class.

okay, yes.

2. I am thankful for: peter and our wonderful relationship, which is fulfilling and gentle and sweet, and reminds me of oceans-blue and white sky-clouds. my friends! who are a wonderful bridge to smiles and laughter and relaxing into the silly soft rhythms of the world as it is, or, inspiring support, or, a lot of things. I’m so glad that I have started to appreciate people and relationships more this year. being calm! sometimes.

3. so, I’m feeling some feelings of drifting, pale bleakness here, the same about myth in literature. I guess its just the horror (it is, that, horror! its muted but horrible because it is muted and not felt fully, nothing ever felt fully!) of not being able to grasp things (class, meaning in literature, human existence, the best thats been said, pinnacles, you know, of human experience; and also, memories, experiences gone by the wayside) as they should be, or that everything is sort of fading-or worse!- faded already–anyways, this is most salient in regard to homefeelings, childhood, past relationships ebbing away (like low tide leaving me bereft and exposed, finding nothing but empty sky above). but I think there are a few remedies to this:

one, that meaning is often always post- it somehow comes afterward, it is found afterwards (remembrance of things past? in search of lost time?) through reflection, association, memories come forward bearing gifts, thoughts, feelings they had not. so this feeling of oh-god-everything-is-going
is not so much that but a proper distancing to lend towards careful reflection on things past.

second, and related, to view the parts of my life that are going ever, as discrete phases, which, in itself lends meaning to them. my childhood, when I ran wild in the woods and played on graves. high school, and walking home and figuring out people better, learning to laugh and smile and preen. you, who inspired in me my quest for meaning ever, the aesthetic beauty of philosophy, the gentle turning forth of the world into humanness, the aloofness from others, the relating and interchange, among other things, gems of meaning and moments, that I will always love and treasure. working through, I won’t figure out all of this at once. and now peter-you, who is relationships and thoughtfulness and the deep blue earth and trees–good pure sensitive dreamy love.

and, my relationship with my parents, it can change, there can be phases, I don’t have to approach them as so much the oppressive but neglectful, and yet in some ways deeply hurtful people that they were. I am free of some of that now, though I feel their absence forwards and backwards, in anxiety, in reaching out and feeling worse-than-nothing, feeling indifference or anger.

three, to remember above all, the things I learned and the things that were good in life, to remember and feel that now. I remember sitting with you on the point in the soft sun, at the top of a tree swaying and windy and fearless, saying: this is not a moment in time this is a ribbon to wrap around my heart, the frame I see the world through. and I know that thats what it is, to love the good things, praise the mutilated world. there were so many moments of deep and wild joy in my childhood, and blissful alcoholic dances in college, and I love donna richardson and also my classes, bjorn! and writing good essays even if by luck by chance, and I loved so many things, and that love, that empathy of finding something good in the world even as it is so very flee-ing, fleeting—these small things (like a tree a habit to look at, oh rilke!) are something to hold on to. rilke rilke rilke. is my holy text.

4. this is epically long and I have had to take breaks to prepare stuffed butternut squash!

but I would like to finish with a dream for the future since I don’t do that often enough.

I would like to work on an urban farm, I think, organizing it and doing community outreach to get people from all over, republicans, bigots, murderers, rapists, into the farm. because food is the great equalizer, I think, and food has always meant love to me. I would like to run cooking classes and demonstrations, to learn how to cook myself and to introduce new vegetables into mine and other people’s cultures so its easier to eat locally and seasonally. and some sort of radical-soup-kitchen sort of thing, would also be connected, where the people who really needed help now could get it without politics or policy, but also without so much dependence on the I’m-rich-you’re-poor-let-me-help-you thing. I really like designing fliers! I think I would like to work with a church and bring poetry into worship, and understanding god as a metaphor so I can understand my own spirituality better, and everyone can. and poetry, beautiful poetry everywhere in the garden. and we would get funding from doing shows and benefits and selling food to restaurants. this is a dream! I’m allowed to dream it! and people would gather and talk and school kids would come. and tons of support for everyone who worked there, meetings and stuff. thats my dream!
