My personal bag has seen it’s better days. That puts me back out on the market looking for another bag (that I can afford). I figured with the recession pinching most people’s wallets these days, I would share what I found. I personally am looking for bags under, about, 250USD.

My personal favorite is the Burberry Small Packable Tote Bag. It’s only 195USD from Burberry, looks very stylish and comes in a size and color that I want. However there were many finds!

Want this! I adore Jeremy Scott and every time he puts his own touch to a Longchamp bag I try to get my hands on it, but I’m a sec’ too late =(. It’s especially heartbreaking when you see a girl at Amsterdam Amstel train station rocking the “Floral Fights” version you wanted. Grrrr! But with a new one in line, I won’t be too late this time (seems like i’m on a rhyme fest today). Matter of fact, I just ordered mine and can’t wait to sling it over my shoulder (jumps of joy)! I’ve got a jones for bones. And Mr. Scott, you just keep ‘em coming. I know it is still over a month away, but when I was little I started making my Christmas lists the day after Halloween. I get really excited for that time of year because my birthday is also in December. Which is both good and bad. I like that everything is always festively decorated for my birthday, and just the general feeling that is in the air (lame and bullshit you may say, but I always feel giddy during that time of year). Today, I skipped class, oops! And was looking online trying to figure out what I was going to get my family for Christmas. I always try to get the shopping done early so I can wrap the presents and I don’t have to scramble around with the masses last minute. I like to sit back and enjoy the holidays. So while thinking of what I was going to get them, I naturally started thinking about what I want. So obviously, I started looking up stuff online that I want. I admit, I am sometimes self-centered and I am a retail whore. I love buying stuff for myself. I haven’t bought anything for myself in about two weeks, and it is killing me. Sorry, I just realized that I am way off topic!

What I want for Christmas:

1. Kindle

I love to read~ I read all the time. I have had my reserves about Kindles, I am a book lover! I love the way they smell, I enjoy holding them, the whole tactile experience. But there is something pretty awesome about having a bunch of books contained in one device that is not GIGANTIC! And I have decided that if I really miss books, I can still go buy them. So this is what has sold me on the Kindle: I can still buy books, I don’t need to be Kindle exclusive. I don’t have to worry about making room for all my books in my luggage when I travel (I take 5-7 books for 1 week at the beach). On solo road trips (while I do talk to my dog, he does not respond, obviously) and I take a couple a month, I have to have an audio book to listen to or I get bored out of my mind. The Kindle is able to read the book out loud to me (as long as the author has given the okay). So, I am sold, and now I want one! I just don’t know which size to get. If anyone knows anything about these, or has one, please let me know if this is a good idea or not. I would like to hear some feedback before I commit to something.

2. Longchamp Le Pilage tote and coin purse

I want the larger one, the one the size below isn’t big enough to hold a notebook, it is only 10″X10″, and my notebooks are all 8.5″x11″. I think that these are very cute, and reasonably priced. I need a nice, big bag that I can take to class. My purses just aren’t cutting it. And I hate having to use my nice purses to carry my school stuff. They are getting scratched and too much wear. And they aren’t big enough to hold my notebooks, planner, wallet, pens, phone, calculator, and any other miscellaneous shit that I need to haul around on any given day. I have looked, and decided that I like the lime blossom color the best. And hey, this would be great to carry my Kindle, see how practical I am!

No matter what time she wakes up in the morning – sometimes ten minutes before class…and sometimes ten minutes after it’s started – Jessica always stays fly and manages to pull on something cute. Even if its her simple staple look – one of her many v-necks, a scarf, and a pair of comfy jeans. She just makes everything look good. What got me to notice her in a sea of students wearing jeans and v-necks, though?

1) Describe your personal style.

I’ve never really defined my personal style; it’s pretty eclectic and definitely varies with my mood. I’m from San Francisco and people sometimes tell me I have that easy-going West Coast vibe: skinny jeans, colorful Chucks, v-neck tee, and scarf. I love v-neck tees and have them in every color. Sometimes I’ll feel more girly and wear a pretty sundress with sandals or flip-flops (never heels, just too uncomfortable for me). I don’t know, I go through phases! I’ve been through a punk phase, a boho phase, a hipster phase…I don’t have much time to get ready in the morning, though, so I definitely go for something comfortable and easy to wear.

2) You can’t leave your house without your ________.

Bright pink Longchamp bag! I carry it every day whether I’m going to class or just going out to dinner with friends. I can fit everything in it, including my laptop! I also love how it’s so bright and goes with basically any outfit.

3) Name your favorite store.

I absolutely love this online boutique called 80’s purple; it’s an eclectic mix of basics and bolder, more “out-there” looks. I also love shopping in boutiques in Hong Kong (you can get designer clothes at much cheaper prices), and you can never go wrong with Forever21!

4) What/who is the biggest influence on your style?

I can’t really pinpoint one influence. I guess I just absorb what I see in the media, magazines, and on my friends – and then choose my own style from there!

5) What’s your favorite trend, past or present?

Scarves. I LOVE scarves – all types! I have at least twenty from all over the world. Whenever I travel, I always pick up a few from whichever country I’m in at the time.

I started making my Christmas list…I always tend to want a few expensive things rather than a lot of cheaper things. But when it comes to handbags, apparently no one understands why I like bags that cost over $100, so I always end up buying them for myself instead of receiving them as gifts! Nevertheless, I’m putting this Longchamp bag on my list because I love it

Yep, this got me excited!

Because I am confined to my fortress of pillows, blankets, and tissue boxes, I’ve no choice but to forgo my outside world adventures and focus instead on the wonderful world of the Web. Recent explorations have led me to find the only retailer of Longchamp bags in Toronto (Betty Hemmings in Yorkville). I thought I wanted an LM Nylon bag, but after visiting their website I’ve changed my mind. Now wishing for a custom Le Pliage.

Still debating colour choices. LOVE the Hawthorne colour, though I’m not sure how well it’d fit into my wardrobe. Love that you can have your initials embossed on the leather (not crazy about the embroidery option). Wonder if Santa takes into consideration one’s behaviour during the first ten months of the year when drafting his Naughty/Nice list…

Will a promise to be angelic for the remainder of the year make a difference? Because… I can be nice, you know.

“TheCity” Season 1: Part 2: Episode 5: “Hit It and Quit It”

It seems like every week theCity just keeps getting better.  This week was no exception.  On to the recap.

We begin at People’s Revolution.  Kelly Cutrone tells her staff that they have an event with “Launk Shau” (LongChamp), just the first of many unique names on this week’s episode.  ELLE will also be at the event at Kipton Arts.  Whitney and Roxy are to head up the task.  Whitney asks who from ELLE will be at the event, and Kelly tells her the name she didn’t want to hear- Pouty P, Olivia Palermo.

After, Whitney tells Roxy that Jay has been calling her.  “Ex-boyfriend Jay?,” Roxy asks.  No, Jay Leno. Whit says he’s been calling because last time Jay was in town she kind of booty called him.  The last thing we would expect to hear is that prim and proper Whitney called a guy for some booty.  This is just the first moment in the episode where Whitney comes out of her shell.  But she didn’t continue seeing Jay.  It was a bona fide booty call.  “Because it was something I wanted to leave in the past, I did it and quit it”, Whitney said slightly getting the phrasing wrong.  Roxy confirmed that she “hit it and quit it”.  Half of Whitney’s body is out the shell at this point.  Whitney says she feels like she owes it to Jay to talk to him because he thought their booty call was something more.

Then Olivia walks into ELLE, impeccably dressed per usual, pouty mouth fixed on her face.  And Erin!  Erin actually put a curl in her hair!  It definitely suits her round face better.  Erin tells Olivia they’re having an event supporting the Kipton Art Foundation.  Olivia not surprisingly interjects saying Kipton is one of her good friends.  Erin asks Pouty P to get good photos and Pouty P laughs it off saying “it’s a cocktail party”.

Next, we finally go to see Whitney getting some relaxation in when she meets up with Samantha for yoga class.  There, Whitney talks to Samantha in the middle of yoga class!  Shocking!  Whitney is getting all bad azz.  Samantha thinks Whitney doesn’t need to go down the Jay road again, but thinks she should get to know Freddie Fackelmayer.  Sami assures Whitney that Sami is okay with Whitney talking to Freddie.

For the highlight of the episode, we are introduced to Fridolin Fackelmayer, Freddie Fackelmayer’s father.  Yes, the Fackelmayer’s love the letter “F”.  Whitney thinks she’s meeting up with Freddie for dinner, but she gets Fridolin too.  Whitney looks classically gorge with a simple black short dress, with a large snazzy necklace.   After dating for what couldn’t be more than a week, Whitney is faced with a double dose of Facks.  The dinner is awkward.  Fridolin starts grilling Whitney asking whether she works everyday.  Whit tells him about her clothing line and how she has to find investors.  Fridolin think it’s silly because it’s hard to raise money for anything in this economy.  Fridolin is what we’d call the dream killer.  You would think Whitney was asking for his money.  Then, Fridolin jets off and Whitney tells Freddie she’s weirded out that he brought her to meet his dad so soon.  Creepy.

After the break, we head to the LongChamp Store to prepare for the big event.  Olivia, dressed in this wonderful creation, arrives and tries to standout immediately.  Erin says that Kipton started the KiptonArt Foundation to help support emerging artists about a year or two ago.  Olivia corrects her saying it’s been more like four years.  When Roxy clarifies that they go to Erin for questions, Olivia says “and me”.

Next we go to Whitney’s apartment in the West Village where Roxy’s teaching Whitney how to do the Beyonce Single Ladies dance.  Score!  Whitney’s completely out of her shell.  She never danced on theHills.  Then again, they don’t allow dancing on theHills unless it’s in a drunken rage furthering a plot that you need to go to rehab.  We’re looking at you Holly Montag.  Whitney wasn’t half bad dancing either.  And Roxy is very fun and is becoming a much better friend to Whitney.  She can stay.  As they prepare for the big event, Whitney tells Roxy about her date with Freddie and Fridolin which Roxy agrees was “weird”.  Whitney says Fridolin was not like Jay’s parents.  Jay’s mom sell sex toys.  Fridolin probably doesn’t know what a sex toy is!  Roxy says Jay’s mom needs to “hollerrr” at her with the toys. Whitney is skeptical of Freddie because he’s the first ever male socialite, and he knows Olivia- two strikes!

It’s finally the night of the big event.  Freddie arrives and tells Whitney he’s sorry it was awkward with Fridolin.  Whitney says she would’ve preferred to have dinner with Freddie alone before she had to Meet the  Parents.  Meanwhile, Olivia introduces Roxy to the house photographer so Roxy can show him who to take pictures of.  After, Olivia leaves Roxy alone so she can go fraternize.  Roxy tells Erin she doesn’t know how she works with Olivia.  Erin doesn’t know either.

The next day Roxy and Erin do the quintessential “day after” girl talk.  Something about Freddie concerns Roxy.  Whitney says that he and Olivia have the same friends but they can’t judge him by that.  Roxy’s just surprised Olivia has friends.  And how does she keep a job?  They seem to have forgotten that she brings MTV cameras and publicity along to any job, making it hard to fire her.  Whitney feels obligated to go have drinks with Jay, so go get drinks she does.

Then, we see the scene we see four times an episode- Olivia walking into ELLE, and Erin scolding her.  Olivia explains her behavior from the event saying she showed Roxy her job, she works for a PR company and she should know what to do.  Erin says these socialites are your friends and you could’ve helped her get good photos.  She told Olivia she can’t be rude.  Olivia claims she wasn’t and says it’s Erin’s problem.  Can Olivia really be this snarky to every single person?  If you believe her, she’s just wrongly portrayed.

Not only was Whitney reunited with Olivia, but she finally meets up with Jay.  They’re happy to see each other, but Jay is upset that Whitney brought some guy to his house.  Whit says she met someone while Jay was away.  And although she shouldn’t have brought him to his house, she is dating him and that’s that.  Jay proceeds to criticize Freddie for being an uptown Wall Street guy.  We’re starting to think he’s jealous of those types because he has an unnatural disdain for anyone who remotely fits the bill.  Whitney says it’s her life.  Jay is the first person Whitney has ever been remotely mean to on camera.  Loves it.  Jay doesn’t.  He gets up and walks out the restaurant.  And maybe out of Whitney’s life forever.  “I hope you made the right choice,” he said.  Drama!

In case you don’t remember, Jay broke up with Whitney last season because he was going on tour, then he wanted her back and Whitney’s like I don’t double back dude.  Then Whitney apparently booty called him and Jay got his hopes up, but Whitney still doesn’t double back.  We think that’s a good move!  What would you do?

It seems all but impossible that 36 years ago today Secretariat made the final start of his racing career in the Canadian International at Woodbine.

The modern “Big Red,” in a conscious parallel to the final start of the legendary Man o’ War, was sent across the border to race in Canada. In a wicked twist of circumstance, Canadian-born Ron Turcotte was under suspension and was unable to make the final ride on the great son of Bold Ruler after being his partner for fame and glory in the Triple Crown of 1973.

After wrapping up the first Triple Crown in 25 years with a stunning 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes, many of the breeders who were invested in Secretariat as a stallion wanted to retire him at the peak of his celebrity. Penny Chenery resisted this and sent Secretariat out to race for gold and glory and the undying appreciation of his thousands of fans.

The colt lost two of his six subsequent starts, but Secretariat left no doubts about his place in American racing history or about his superiority to all his contemporaries. In the wake of the Belmont, Secretariat went to Arlington for a special race against his confirmed inferiors, then in the fall won the inaugural Marlboro Cup over one of the greatest fields ever assembled (champion and classic winner Riva Ridge, plus champions Key to the Mint, Cougar, and Kennedy Road, and Travers winner Annihilate ‘Em and Whitney winner Onion).

Secretariat also won his final two starts, the 12-furlong Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont and the 13-furlong Canadian International, both on turf. A horse with extraordinary strength and stride, Secretariat was probably the greatest racer ever over a firm turf course on a relatively level track. My friend and fellow scribbler in England, Tony Morris, would aver that Sea-Bird could have handled Secretariat and perhaps so on undulating ground like Longchamp or Epsom that would favor a change of pace, but for a galloping course like Woodbine, Belmont, or Doncaster, I would take Secretariat over anything.

The decision to take the champion to Woodbine was a grand stroke of luck for the Canadian racecourse and provided me with my first opportunity to see racing in Canada, although I knew they had plenty of good sport there.

But the most memorable part of Secretariat’s victory by 6 1/2 lengths over the high-class racer Big Spruce was the Great One’s effortless stride. The chestnut’s magnificent propulsion drove him around the far turn lengths ahead of his competitors, and due to the chill air, he actually looked like some magical beast. At every stride, the air he breathed was superheated in his great lungs and then expelled in twin plumes of mist from his nostrils.

This supernatural scene in the growing dusk of the Canadian afternoon, coupled with the emotions of seeing the champion’s last race, made the Canadian International an unforgettable experience.

The ubiquitous (and thank god, because they are beautiful) Longchamp totes seem to be a fixture in the upper middle class fashion world in the United States.  So since it is a French brand, I really wasn’t too surprised at first when I noticed them E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E in France, but then it hit me.  Here they are a basic staple, a necessity, that nearly everyone finds the money to possess. They aren’t a status symbol.  They serve a practical purpose.  I saw a group of children that were about 6 years old crossing the street in a big line holding hands a few days ago and some of these 6 year old kids were actually wearing Longchamp backpacks.  It’s just the way things are over here lol.

Right now, I’m seriously jonesing for a “Serviette” Longchamp bag…specifically, the Pliage.  I see students carrying them a lot because they are the perfect size for notebooks.  And at a little less than €50, it’s affordable.  I need to go into the Longchamp store in Rennes and look around, but right now I’m loving it in this purple shade:
