Here are some recent ramblings of an enlightened male, that will no doubt make mothers everywhere grind their teeth in annoyance.

According to Michael Odent – a medical expert and ‘childbirth specialist’ – fathers-to-be should no longer be present at the birth of their children, and should be banned from the delivery room. Apparently they make our time in labour longer, more painful and more stressful.

Oh, what a load of crap.

I believe it’s the trying to push and pass out something the size of a bloody melon that is the cause of all the pain and stress, not having the father sat beside us in the room. Something that Mr Odent would know if he was to give it a go. Oh that’s right, he can’t, he’s a man.

Now I can only speak for myself, and the 22 hours in total I’ve spent in labour, but having my husband in the room helped, not hindered the situation. He made the time go faster by talking to me, making me laugh and occasionally laughing at me (as he winched me on and off the birthing ball). He fetched me reading material and fluids, and let me wrap my fingernails so snugly around the bones in his arm I left scars, without making so much as a whimper.

For me, high as a kite on gas and air, the time actually passed quite quickly. For him, unable to escape from my vice gripe long enough to even let the blood flow back into his fingertips, the time must have practically stood still.

His one very stupid idea of offering me a Jaffa cake half way through a contraction aside, my husband was an absolute god send, and made an otherwise traumatic occasion much more bearable. The thought of having had to go through that without him there doesn’t even bear thinking about.

So I really don’t care if Mr Odent has been ‘involved for more than 50 years in childbirth’. He hasn’t been there. Or got the t-shirt, weakened bladder or stretch marks to prove it.  So with all due respect, he should butt out and stop trying to fix something that isn’t broken. Recommending that a woman should give birth with only a silent midwife in the room is like suggesting an operation should be done without the general anesthetic – just because it might speed up the recovery time. Would Mr Odent particularly like to be sliced and diced whilst awake I wonder?

Of course midwives do a great job – my last one was lovely, if my somewhat hazy memory serves me right – but they can’t give you what you need while your pelvis splits in half and your pain levels go off the Richter scale. At a time when all dignity has left the room and you’re freaked out and panicking, you don’t need polite chit-chat with a strange woman between your legs, as she grapples with a slippery crowning head. You need a familiar face and the reassurance of the person who got you into this painful bloody mess in the first place.

The other, even more laughable observation made by Mr Odent, is that watching your wife give birth can ultimately lead to divorce. I’m sorry. Is this man for real? What he’s really saying is if a man is subjected to seeing his wife laid out on a table like a birthing cow, then he will ultimately be put off having sex with her again, and as a result, have no choice but to throw in the towel and his wedding ring.

Now THAT is the saddest excuse in the history of marriages for a man being forced to leave his wife. It’s actually justifying why a man can jump ship and run off with a younger, un-stretched, child-free model. If there’s a Mrs Odent out there, you must be so proud – and so very paranoid.

Generally speaking, the man who gets you pregnant already knows (or should already know) you inside out. If, after the birth, he literally knows you inside out, then that, unfortunately, is one of the side effects of procreation.

To say that men can’t stomach the sight of their wife in labour or that they will ’stop feeling a sexual attraction towards them’, is an insult to husbands everywhere. It’s certainly an insult to woman to say that we’re no longer seen as anything other than a piece of reproducing meat after the birth.

If woman had their way, Mr Odent, we wouldn’t be forced to watch our husbands belch, scratch, itch and fart beside us on the sofa every night. None of these manly qualities really puts us ‘in the mood’ you know, but you don’t see us all rushing to file for divorce and citing these disgusting habits on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour.

Really, fancy telling us we should be giving birth in silence and on our own. Are you recruiting for the Church of Scientology by any chance? Next you’ll be saying that pain relief is illegal and Enya is no longer a suitable birthing artist.

For a father to be made to miss out on seeing his child born would be a terrible thing. Not only because he wouldn’t get to experience the incredible rush of euphoria when meeting your 5 second old offspring for the first time, but because for the rest of his life he would be forever reminded by his wife, that not only did she have to do all of the work, but that he wasn’t even there to hold her hand at the end.

And that, Mr Odent, is the part you seem to have forgotten. Woman want their men there with them at this time. Not just to offer them support and a back rub, but so that they can see first hand just how much pain childbirth involves. This way, regardless of how many bins are put out or paychecks earned, the man will always know that he owes something to his wife that can never be repaid.

Call it an unfair advantage in the guilt stakes, but childbirth is the one bit of power we woman still hold in this world. Don’t you dare try and take that away from us.

Petite improvisation aujourd’hui!

Je ne savais pas trop si j’allais le longer, avec ou sans selle ou si j’allais le longer tout court…J’ai donc commencé par le lâcher en liberté pour qu’il se défoule. On a encore joué un peu. Mais il n’avait pas envie aujourd’hui. Il était un peu mou, et s’arrêtait souvent devant la porte. ( ça c’est quand vraiment il en a marre et veut rentrer). Le temps était vraiment gris et triste. Ça donnait envie de ne rien faire!

Je l’ai travaillé en liberté. Je l’ai marché sur un cercle comme si je le longeais mais sans longe. Je lui ai fait quelques tours puis j’ai récompensé et je l’ai laissé tranquille.

J’ai travaillé avec lui le “avance”, “arrêt” et “recule” en liberté. Ça c’est bien passé a part l’arrêt qui était un peu plus difficile a obtenir. Je l’ai récompensé et je l’ai laissé tranquille.

Je suis revenue 5 ou 10 minutes plus tard avec une longe a longer, que je lui ai accroché au licol, et on a commencé a travailler.

Je l’ai longé très peu de temps, peut-être 5 ou 10 minutes, juste pour voir ce que ça donnait en licol et je l’ai récompensé. Je l’ai ensuite lâché en liberté 10 minutes. Je marchais a coté de lui en liberté, mais sans longe. Ensuite, je l’ai rentré au box.

Je l’ai brossé, curé, bichonné….il m’a encore montré ses fesses a la fin. J’ai pris ma chambrière et je suis rentrée dans le box. Je ne l’ai pas touché mais j’ai haussé le ton et je lui ai montré. Il a compris. Il est revenu a peine 1 minute plus tard de lui-même, je l’ai caressé et récompensé.

Je suis restée la dessus. On verra demain. Mon chéri vient demain, je verrais comment ça se passe, si tout va bien je vais monté un peu.

Lentement mais surement!

L’entraineur de dressage est venu aujourd’hui, c’était génial! Je l’ai monté et je pense avoir de grosses courbatures demain.

Je l’ai lâché en liberté avant de le longer puis de le monter. Il avait encore beaucoup d’énergie. (Je pense savoir d’ou ça vient, je viens de découvrir qu’il a des frères qui ont fait des compétitions FEI en endurance de 160 km)

Il avait l’air infatiguable. L’entraineur l’a monté avant moi en longe puis tout seul. J’ai fait pareil ensuite.

Ça c’est tres bien passé, j’ai eu quelques problèmes de direction, mais c’était davantage de ma faute. Ça fait longtemps que je n’avais pas monté. Le temps de me remettre dans le bain, j’ai fait quelques erreurs.

En règle générale, tout s’est super bien passé. Je suis contente on progresse!

L’entraineur m’a dit qu’il avait perdu de la graisse et gagné en muscle, et que donc il risquait d’être plus fort, plus énergique, et davantage apte a “faire son étalon”. Il faut que je sois vigilante.

Le programme de cette semaine, avant qu’il ne revienne samedi prochain: beaucoup de travail au sol,  je compte aussi le monter mais légèrement, je préfère que l’entraineur soit la, pour ne pas lui faire prendre de mauvaises habitudes.

Je vais le longer encore. S’il me refait ses caprices de venir au centre du cercle et de se mettre debout, je suis prête! J’ai acheté une chambrière de 2 mètres de long je pense…Elle est pas mal impressionnante!

Ce soir il a regardé une fois au centre du cercle je lui ai montréla chambrière, il ne s’est pas réessayé!

La cerise sur le gâteau aujourd’hui!

Tout a pourtant bien commencé, il ne m’a pas montré ses fesses une fois dans le box. Je suis rentrée et sortie a plusieurs reprises pour lui donner l’occasion de le refaire.  Mais rien…de ce coté la au moins on progresse. Je vais le surveiller et continuer a faire plusieurs aller-retour dans son box, tout en respectant son espace et en attendant qu’il m’y invite. Tres important!

Je l’ai longé, il faisait froid, très froid, et je sentais qu’il était prêt a partir au galop a la moindre occasion, et qu’il voulait jouer ou me provoquer.

Au pas tout allait bien, c’est au trot, après un deuxième tour sur le cercle, qu’ il commençait a me regarder en tournant complètement sa tête, et a vouloir venir au centre du cercle.

Je lui montrais ma chambrière, mais sans succès. La seule chambrière que j’ai trouvé ce matin, était très courte et le fil avait disparu. Il a donc compris que je ne faisais pas le poids avec mon bout de chambrière. Il est venu au centre du cercle en chargeant droit sur moi.

Impressionnant surtout quand on a une chambrière qui ne fait pas l’affaire et que 500 kg vous fonce dessus! Je lui ai dit mon fameux “WOW! Doucement!”, en faisant un geste de la main, orientée vers le bas. Il s’est calmé mais ne s’est pas arrêté pour autant. J’ai reculé ( je sais je n’aurai pas du), il est venu vers moi. (Je ne sais pas s’il voulait jouer ou si c’était vraiment l’étalon dominant en lui qui me confrontait). En tout cas, même s’il voulait jouer, il faut qu’il comprenne qu’il ne peut pas jouer comme ça avec moi comme bon lui semble, a moins que je ne lui demande.

J’ai donc reculé il est venu vers moi, (mais il ne chargeait plus) et la j’ai avancé vers lui pour le faire reculer. Il s’est mis debout. Du coup, j’ai chargé moi aussi et je me suis arrêtée une fois qu’il avait reculé et qu’il avait compris qu’il venait de faire une grosse bêtise. J’ai tiré sur ma longe une fois pour lui dire ” c’est quoi ça?”Je lui ai montré la chambrière, sans le toucher…

(j’aurai peut être du…mais elle était trop courte..il aurait vraiment fallu que je m’approche et rentre dans son espace…)

Il a compris qu’il avait fait quelque chose de mal il n’a pas bougé.

Je suis allée chercher une très grande chambrière avec un très long fil.

Je suis revenue et j’ai repris le travail comme si de rien n’était.

Tres important de ne pas être rancunière et de très vite passer l’éponge. Il faut aussi rester très calme, ça le déconcerte complètement. J’essaie d’être le plus juste possible aussi…Sinon ça ne pardonne pas! Il peut devenir méchant et se rebeller pour de bon…

Pas facile de trouver le juste milieu et d’avoir la bonne réaction au bon moment!

Je l’ai remis sur le cercle, au pas. Tout allait bien, je lui ai demandé un départ au trot, et la, il voulait recommencer et me regardait en me narguant. Je me suis dit ” Ok tu veux venir? viens! je t’attends!”  ( dans ma tête bien sur)

J’ai attendu jusqu’a ce qu’il recommence. A un moment il a été plus rapide que moi, je  n’ai pas eu le temps de réagir, il est venu de face. Cette fois il n’a pas chargé, mais il est sorti du cercle et s’est arrêté devant moi. Je susi restée immobile, de marbre. Une fois qu’il s’est arrêté,  Je lui ai dis “c’est quoi ca?” Il savait qu’il avait fait quelque chose de mal, j’ai tiré une fois sur ma longe et la je lui ai fait sentir la chambrière sur l’encolure et sur sa tête sans le frapper, mais sans le caresser avec non plus! Pour lui montrer que s’il voulait m’affronter de face, la chambrière et moi l’affronteront de face aussi.

Il n’a pas aimé mais n’a pas bronché (généralement il fait ça quand il sait qu’il a fait une bêtise). Je suis restée très calme, je n’ai pas essayé de lui rentrer dedans de façon ”violente”, et d’instaurer un rapport de force, a le faire reculer et sauter dans tous les sens avec l’aide de la chambrière. Je l’ai juste amené a comprendre gentiment qu’il ne doit pas recommencer.

Certains me diront que j’aurai du lui rentrer dedans de facon “méchante”, que ce qu’il a fait est très grave, et qu’il m’a manqué de respect. Certes, c’est ce qu’il s’est passé, mais du moment qu’il comprend avec cette méthode, ca va. Si maintenant il recommence, on passera a la vitesse supérieure. Je lui donne une chance

J’ai suivi mon instinct…On verra bien. Seul le temps nous le dira.

Apres j’ai continué a le longer au pas, trot et galop. Il avait peur de plein de petits bruits. Il m’a fait des départs au galop sportif. Je suis restée calme je l’ai laisse galopé, tout en le ramenant sur le cercle de temps en temps, lorsqu’il avait tendance a agrandir le cercle.

Il voulait encore venir au centre du cercle, je lui ai montréla chambrière et il n’a plus recommencé jusqu’a la fin de la session.

Je lui ai fait faire quelques transitions pendant 15 minutes après ses caprices, et j’ai continué a le longer.

Le plus dur est  probablement de ne pas baisser les bras, il faut s’armer de patience et aller jusqu’au bout de ce qu’on veut qu’il nous donne! Facile a dire, plus souvent difficile a faire surtout quand un étalon de 500 kg vous fonce dessus!

Je tente de lui faire comprendre que je ne suis pas pressée j’ai tout mon temps. S’il veut faire des bêtises, il va les faire mais apprendre a ne pas les refaire, et a faire ce que je lui demande quand je lui demande. Que ca prenne 5 minutes ou 3 heures, c’est pas grave! L’essentiel est d’arriver au but!

Ensuite je l’ai arrêté, je l’ai détaché, je l’ai caressé et la, je me suis dit (intérieurement)” Ok tu veux faire le beau? tu veux me narguer on va voir ça!.”

Je l’ai laché en liberté, et la, le jeu et le test a pris place….Je l’ai tenté, je courais il me courait après. ( sans me charger) On a fait une course (enfin j’ai essayé…) Il est vraiment rapide…( je ne pensais pas que c’était a ce point la, vu qu’il est un peu gros et a une musculature très développée…Il fait un peu lourd, pour un pur sang arabe)

De temps en temps il voulait venir vers moi. Biensur j’avais ma chambrière! Tres persuasif! Il était content on jouait dans le respect. Je respectais son espace et lui le mien. Mais en même temps c’était une petite leçon en douceur. Je l’ai fait galoper comme jamais il n’a galoper depuis que je l’ai. Je pense que cela lui a fait le plus grand bien! Et qu’il avait peut être un excès d’énergie qu’il n’avait jamais lâcher!

Il mettait sa queue en panache, faisait le bruit que pas mal d’étalon font (aucune idée du nom, ici au quebec ils y donnent un nom mais ca n’est pas très élégant…)

Il faisait le beau….
