We all spend a lot of time filling out our profiles on dating and social media sites. Have you ever

We all spend a lot of time filling out our profiles on dating and social media sites. Have you ever considered how important your “profile” is in finding the right job? Guest blogger Lauren Tonies explores this topic in today’s career wellness blog.

I met my husband almost 10 years ago, just as online dating was becoming a more common way to meet your future mate. Although I never participated in the whole online dating experience, over the years, I have heard many stories about the experience, both positive and negative.

The other day, I was listening to a friend talking about a profile she was reviewing on a dating website and it struck me, online dating is just like applying for a job!

You may call me crazy, but think about it: if you were going to create a profile that would attract a potential mate, a potential soul mate, or even a spouse, you would probably start by giving a brief summary of yourself, your life and highlight your best attributes. You may even talk about what you are looking for in a potential mate.

My guess is that you would take time to carefully consider your words and even spend time working several drafts of this profile before officially posting this for your future matches to view.

Well, the same should be true when applying for a job and creating a resume. You want to make the best impression for a future employer to consider you in their search for their perfect job match. You want to spend time carefully compiling your “profile” and listing your experiences and highlighting your skills or your best traits.

Both online dating and job hunting call for making a good first impression and this impression is the first step to determine if you will move on to have a second date or an interview. As basic as the concept of this first impression seems, it is one that is often overlooked in the job hunting process.

As a recruiter, I view job applications every day and I am continually amazed by how many times people either 1) don’t even take the time to include a resume or 2) don’t take the time to make sure their resume includes all of the information that is relevant for the position for which they are applying. If the job application process were the online dating world, I would bet the individuals behind these resumes that are lacking information aren’t getting any ‘winks’, emails or calls from potential suitors. The same lack of response will be experienced in the recruitment world.

The goal for most people when online dating is to meet a future mate. Finding that mate requires you find the person that is a fit for you and your unique qualities. You need to make connections, whether via email or live conversations and then maybe go out on a few dates.

The same steps are involved in the selection process for a job. The process may start with a telephone interview, and then an in-person interview, maybe even several interviews, before the decision is made on who would be the best fit for the position and before entering into an exclusive relationship! Just as in the dating world, if you are not selected for a job, or are not selected by a potential mate, don’t take it personally.

Consider what you learned from the experience, dust off your “profile” and get back out there!

We’d love to hear your stories about how your profile worked for or against you when seeking new employment. Share your comments here!

It’s time to make a change. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time now and have yet to act on it. I’m on day 3 of an 11-day stretch of working, so I’m thinking this week is a good time. The fact that I only made $10 tonight is also a good catalyst. I have to be at the bar every day at 4, so if I want to work out I need to be up by 10, which means I have to go to bed at a reasonable hour – this will make it difficult if not impossible to go out, which is exactly what I need. I started my Barsmarts course today, my goal is to make it through one section per week. That leaves me time to work out, clean, run errands, look for jobs, etc. First up will be education jobs, checking out the colleges individually. I am also re-committing to losing the rest of this weight. I lost a bit a few weeks ago, but I can feel it creeping back with all the partying I’ve been doing. Not acceptable! So this week the goal is to work out every day and count ALL calories. I’m putting this in writing in the hopes that it will help me to follow through.

I see people unemployed all around me, people with degrees and people without degrees. Many people a

I see people unemployed all around me, people with degrees and people without degrees. Many people are seemingly looking for a job. I notice though far more often than what I should a difference in how many of the younger kids go about looking and applying versus how the older people like me and even how the older ones go about it. The difference is something that leaks over from other parts of their lives and the differences in the age groups and how they work, operate and their responsibilities or lack thereof sometimes. Even when there is only a few years difference between groups.

I realize that now many employers advertise for jobs online, but you can still go and look in the local newspaper on Sunday and see many many job advertisements. Yes some are crap but many are not it depends on what you are looking for. The younger kids like a very close friend of mine who recently graduated college claim that you have to apply on line for anything and everything online and that “you don’t know how things are now”. Apparently, I am somehow too old to know how to look for a job and things have changed so drastically in just a few years when it comes to how to do it….which is not nearly the case despite what he thinks. I am quite certain I have a better idea of how to go about it at 33 than a college graduate who has limited real world work experience doing anything substantial…if they have anything at all.

HOWEVER, a quick glance through the Sunday job section of the newspaper and you will see many jobs that say, Apply in person or apply online or in person. (Here’s a hint kids pick the first option). I have been on both sides of the hiring process and I have many friends in upper management positions in companies around the country, and know many many business owners and people in other successful careers. I have seen and heard the BS that fly out of people’s mouths during the application and interview process especially by the younger folk and the supposedly “enlightened” college graduates in their early to mid-20’s.

It seems the younger kids have either lost, or never had the personal touch when it comes to applying for a job and lack a certain amount of….well drive. And many college grads still believe they are actually worth the $50, 000 or more starting pay that at one point they were told they could get with their degree in a particular field after graduating….most are still waiting for that pay or any unless they have a masters or better.

Stop thinking your unique….your not..at all. Your 19-26ish years old and if you just graduated college you probably haven’t done anything else in life so there is nothing you unique about you. You are just like all the thousands and thousands of college grads with degrees who have no clue what they are fucking in for. What makes you unique is what you WILL do…eventually…someday. But up to this point you are the same as many many other people….remove head from ass…move forward.

I never got a job by someone “getting me in somewhere”. Some jobs I was offered without applying for but most over the years, I got the old-fashioned way. Which is pouring through the Sunday job section in the newspaper and AFTER the year 2000 going online also (did both), making a list of places to apply at. The making or redoing my resume and cover letter accordingly, driving all over during the day light hours to these places and filling out applications THERE and often but not always getting an on the spot interview. JUST A HINT——A receptionist is not always just a receptionist sometimes they vet the applicants occasionally OR always. Their jobs often require them to be personable and friendly; often their boss or the office manager will tell the receptionist or secretary to keep an eye out for applicants that seem “exceptional” when they apply in person. You know this when you are applying somewhere and there may be 2 or 3 other applicants doing the same thing as you and one application and resume get brought back to an office instead of getting put on pile to be looked at later. That person just got an instant interview most likely. At the very least shuffled to the front of the line. The person that applied only online did not and it is already in the trash bin in the company email or in the back of the line…best worst-case scenario. Do not ever overlook or piss off the secretary…and do not be afraid to talk them up…I DID NOT SAY FLIRT…talk…just talk.

NOW I am not saying I am a pro at this…but I do have a hell of a better idea at how to find and get a job then some kid who just graduated college who might have never had a job before or only had crap jobs. I have only been working since…1995…full time since 1997 when I was 18 even though I was still in high school and eventually owned my own successful business. So what the hell do I know right?? More than you possible it seems…

Applying in person if possible has its benefits, instant interviews are one but putting a face with an application is also one. Even if it’s just a brief handshake with HR guy to John doe and him saying “we will be in contact” and “thank you coming in” is far better than being an annoying message on a screen pleading for a job in his inbox when you look exactly like others doing the same thing. It seems younger kids and young college graduates do not get this and certainly do not buy into it. Apparently, the degree they just got did not include lessons in humility or reality sometimes. They would rather spend their hours sending email upon email and online app upon online app instead of doing the footwork when possible and applying in person.

Why do they do this insanity? All because somewhere someone their own age who is just as clueless told them this is how things “are done”. Alternatively, it is because they heard from a friend in college who graduated before them. Want to know a secret boys and girls? That friend….um LIED TO YOU!!!…yup they lied…sorry but that awesome bro or best girlfriend that were like family during your college years LIED to your face.

They LIED because they do not want you to know that they actually have a really shitty job or just started a post college job after spending a year or better looking for one after graduation and living on cup-o-soup and doing laundry at their parents. It is like that line girls are taught, “Oh that boy is mean to you because he likes you”…..nope that boy is just an asshole that likes picking on girls. Stop fooling yourself. Either way you are told the line so you do not go walk into street at rush hour…or to shut you up so THEY don’t have to listen to YOU piss and moan…and basically go into histrionics. No one wants to deal with that…ever.

You ever notice how some of your friends never talk about the job they have over FB or in person. Its because that like their jobs more often than not, they like their careers and don’t feel the need to prove it vocally. The ones that do talk about their job (especially their pay) generally but not always hate their jobs and by talking about how “great” it is makes them feel better about the reality of their job which is that its shit and they hate it an hate their lives. But sometimes you get the dickhead that flaunts his shit and there is many reasons for this that i wont get into.

(The fact your thinking about not reading anymore of this goes to show your lack of tenacity)

Younger kids seem to focus on the big stuff in the process and forget or ignore the little BUT important things that employers pay attention to…..like drive and ambition. Sending out 50 emails and applications online a day DOES NOT show drive or ambition….it shows that you are not wearing pants …literally sometimes and no one wants that mental imagery. Or that, you are sitting in coffee shop with your friends not taking it seriously…you, your job search, that company and the position with it.

You can see drive and ambition in someone’s eyes…confidence in their posture…a resume does not quantify those things very well if at all. A resume tells potential employers 3 things of many.

What you used to do well or pretty well (in your mind).

What you think you might be able to do well in theory based on your own assessment of what you learned in college… (HOWEVER, we never self-analyze ourselves realistically).

That you are good at using big words and complicated explanations to make what you did at some job in college or high school sound better and more important than it really was.

Number three pisses most people doing the hiring off because they have to weed through all the BS words and phrases you used to figure out what you REALLY did and then decide if what you did really matters to them. Let us say that the BS resume of yours actually gets you an interview at something making more than 10 bucks an hour. If you say something like “I was an integral part of the corporate money handling responsibilities and important financial transactions at Company A. Also I took the lead in advanced customer service and customer relation policies ensuring the best possible Customer experience”. In the interview, they will ask you about this, and after you explain it, EVEN more than needed they will likely say…

“Ok so you were a cashier. You could have just said you did the typical Cashier Duties” (they know what those are)….”we will be in touch”. Then you never hear from them all because you wasted their time with your unnecessary explanation to a simple GD question. People like YOU made people like me need to go have a stiff DRINK after work.

I know…I know…I don’t have a clue WTF I’m talking about or how things go…keep telling yourself that while you sit there with your latte that you really shouldn’t be spending the money on and shake your head. But then again I have been successful in life and YOU have not and might even be unemployed or underemployed. Even if I am wrong, the way you are doing things obviously isn’t working if you can’t find a job or a better one so why not give a it a fucking shot. Shit even a few weeks of trying this might help your cause…again its better than how you have been doing things this far. If your not getting at least ONE call every week or so from a job you applied at then your either not applying enough, at all, or you really have a shitty resume and need re-think that.

A man or women standing in the lobby dressed as well as he or she can afford and filling out an application by hand at least shows he or she cares about what they’re doing and might have their shit together. An HR person or office manager (I have done those jobs BTW) is more likely to pay attention to the person in the office who is there in person. I am NOT saying do not apply online at all but spread it around dumbass. YES, it may take more time and gas and god forbid some fucking EFFORT and you might have to get up before noon and not stay out all night…but it will pay off eventually I can promise you that.

And for Christ sakes where something decent even filling out the app anywhere not jeans and a hoodie or some skanky t-shirt you found laying on floor that may or may not smell like booze or the last sexual escapade you had. At least give the impression your a grown up even if its not really the case. If you cant pull it together enough to fill out an application the potential employer will seriously doubt your ability to pull it together for an interview or an actual job.

Here is an idea check out a job fair…all of them!!! they are all over. Yeah you might have to give up a day or part of a weekend or go to bed at a decent hour and get up at 8am but its another option. Generally job fairs are filled with employers who are actually actively hiring.

Besides, it is not as if you have anything better to do with your time…unless your post graduate and pre-grown up social life is that fucking important (yes, there is a difference). If it is then fine, look in the mirror and admit you have no ambition, gave up and get a minimum wage job and be happy about it while you pay off your massive student loan debt that was waste at 9 bucks an hour and revel in the fact you gave up on your dreams.

I know a guy out in Seattle who’s a bit older than me (40 ish) with a degree…a masters of all things in international business and banking. Dude speaks four languages not including English. He has not applied in person for ANY job in 3 years…he tells me “it is a waste of his time in the world we live in given the technology we have”. He is still unemployed 3 years later last I knew. How is that “strategery” working for ya buddy?

An example to emphasize my point is if you apply online for a job 4 miles away from where you live the person receiving your application is going to notice your address and see you live 4 miles away from the business. They will ask their self these questions or make assumptions (I have and I know others who have)…

-”he/she lives so close why didn’t they come in person to apply” or

-“They were too lazy to drive 4 miles and apply in person so why would I call them for an interview” or

- “They didn’t have a form of transportation to come and apply so they are probably going to have issues getting to work on time”

Or the worst assumption….

-“They don’t take our company and/or finding a career serious enough to apply in person so I’m not going to call them for an interview”.

Long story short if the job or jobs you are applying for are within 10 or so miles of where you live and you would be willing to drive there if you DID get a job. AND you have a mode of transportation or can at least borrow one or take the bus then get in your car or whatever and drive your happy ass to these places and apply. IF they are farther away than that, apply online if you have the option or take the initiative and just drive anyway it won’t kill you. I know that means you will have to get up early and get dressed and be a normal person with responsibilities BUT It looks better to the people you will be interviewing with and potentially working for or with. A personal touch is always ALWAYS better and applying online is the least personal thing you can do. Employers want to see that you have gumption not that you are doing things the easy way.

Again this is just my opinion. It is what I have seen work and not work, the mistakes I have made and seen others make. I think when trying to seek out advice for job searches when your young you have to look at all sources, all kinds of advice and pick and choose what works best for you for your specific situation. Its up to you figure out what is best or not. But some thing hold true when looking for a job and never change whether its the 1990′s or 2012. But you wont go anywhere, get anywhere unless you put the kid games behind you. I don’t really care if you listen to me or not; believe me or not. I wrote this blog last summer and just got to posting it now…i’m just tired of hearing you little bitches bitch and doing little to change your situation. I hear enough bitching from grown adults with actual real problems. They have something to lose most likely…and you do not…think about. When you have nothing to lose whats stopping you from trying anything to go somewhere in life.

You haven’t earned anything ye, your degree does not make you deserving of shit…you still have to earn your place. Sometimes a shitty low level mediocre pay job will lead you higher up over time. You just gotta suck it up and except that 35,000 or more a year might be out of your reach for a few years until you turn into a bigger fish and prove yourself. If you are single less than 35,000 is more than doable even with student loan debt. Entire american families can live on less than that and have money to pay bills, buy cars, food and things the kids need….you are ALONE you will be fine on less. And besides when you DO have more, it will mean more…since you EARNED IT.

Next post on the myth of “working smarter not harder” in the job search

…and I’m not talking about Huey Lewis either.

I recently had a conversation with my friend who is extremely upset about a decision she is faced with making. I tried to comfort her as best I could but really, there’s not much I can say that will make her feel any better. But I’ll try.

The 1950’s introduced the term ‘nuclear family’ which meant women left their parents’ home when they got married to start a new family. She was expected to stay at home and take care of the house and children. However, during WWII, women did a lot of work outside of the home, including industrial work that men had to abandon to fight in the war. When the war was over most women wanted to remain in the work force and earn their own money to which they had become accustomed. However, for sociological and economic purposes, the term “nuclear family” has remained. It simply means a single family household with a parent (or parents) and their children living separately from their parents and other family members.

The decision my friend is faced with is having to leave her “nuclear family” status and returning to her mother’s home so that both households will have a better chance at survival, thereby becoming an “extended family” once again.

She is very upset because she feels because she’s been independent for so long, having to return “home” is not only a step backwards, but also a symbol of failure.

She couldn’t be further from the truth.

During these hard economic times, the idea of nuclear families is dwindling and we are going back in time. Families are once again establishing “compounds” on their parents’ estate and multiple families are sharing space. There is no shame in this and it certainly makes economic sense. But regardless of economics, you cannot and should not look at the above scenario as failure.

As parents, we look forward to the day when we can kick our kids out of the nest and send them out into the world on their own. They look forward to it just as much; it’s an opportunity to spread their little wings and fly. But realistically, fewer and fewer graduates are finding employment upon completion of college and many cannot afford the rising costs of apartment living even if they do find work.

According to adage.com

The losses of this economic power-household hit some regions harder than others. Forty-one states lost a total of 1.55 million married couples with children between the 2000 and 2010, according to the latest Census figures. Only nine states had an increase, but together they gained only 302,000 such families. Nationwide, that amounts to a net loss of 1.25 million nuclear families.

Two thirds of the decline — 860,000 families — came in only eight states, seven of which are in the rapidly aging regions of the Northeast and Midwest.

Why does this matter? Nuclear families account for just one one-fifth of all households but more than one-third (34%) of total consumer spending.

According to family.jrank.org, in a recent study, clearly outlines the benefits of the extended family:

Contemporary perspective. As noted, extended family ties and households have often proved remarkably adaptable to changing social conditions. It has been observed that the extended family is most likely to emerge in contemporary society when young adults face unemployment or divorce or when older adults become widowed and/or their health declines (Lee 1999). considerable research points to the benefits of grandmothers in single-parent households and extra-household extended family networks as important mechanisms for coping with inadequate financial resources .

Government services have made extended family life less important for the care of the elderly, yet if programs such as social security and welfare continue to receive less funding, the extended family may become important in compensating for the lack of these services (Glick 2000; Goldstein and Warren 2000). Interestingly, the frequency of extended family households has begun to decline in some Asian societies (Ogawa and Retherford 1993), but has been shown to have increased for the first time in decades in the United States from 10 percent to 12 percent between 1980 and 1990 (Glick 1997).

The outlook for the extended family is unclear. At the same time, it is certain that as socioeconomic conditions, technology, and cultural values continue to change, so will the face of the extended family.

I hope I have eased my friend’s mind. There is no shame in having to move back home to help family members as well as get help for yourself. More and more people will be faced with the same hard decision as these difficult economic times continue – and there’s no indication of them ending any time soon. Find comfort in the fact that you do have family who can and are willing to combine resources. It may not be forever and at least for a little while, you may find economic peace of mind.

It’s a warm and stormy night deep in the heart of Texas. I’m sitting on my bed in my parents house exhausted from the extremely long day of packing and moving back home from college.

This weekend I officially graduation from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. *Applause*.
My parents, sister and brother-in-law, and maternal grandparents all came up to watch us walk across the stage and receive our diplomas. Our commencement ceremony on Saturday morning was one of my favorite parts of my graduation weekend, second to that of physically receiving my diploma and hugging my professors goodbye. Our speaker was the one-and-only Condoleezza Rice, former United States Secretary of State. I truly enjoyed her speech. Not just because I felt like she actually knew what she was talking about when it came to succeeding in one’s career, but I enjoyed listening to her tell stories of her childhood and educational years as young black women in the 1960s and 1970s. Regardless of what political viewpoint you hold, you can’t deny that she truly is a remarkable women.

Not only did we graduate from college this weekend, but today we packed up our 3-story town home and drove back home. With the help of professional movers, we began our packing ordeal at 8:15 AM and arrived back to our hometown at 8 PM. It was literally a 12-hour moving extravaganza! We meet the movers tomorrow morning at the storage unit we rented out to complete the final unloading of our furniture and appliances.

I must admit it was extremely bittersweet seeing our once beautifully decorated town home completely empty except for the stack of brown boxes in the corner. It’s amazing how quickly 3 and a half years in one place just flies by. As cliché as it sounds, it felt like only yesterday we were sitting at our kitchen table with nothing but a TV in our condo.

Alas, we are home again only to be living at our parents house until Sis and I find jobs and are able to afford an apartment on our own. Although I am glad to be home, the life of a college student – independent and carefree – will sorely be missed. The happy hours with close friends and the 6 AM crew calls from SMU’s daily morning show, The Daily Update, are now just happy memories. One thing will remain the same, however. I’ll forever be an SMU Mustang.

Pony Up!

My name is Toni Driver and I am a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater where I

My name is Toni Driver and I am a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater where I received my B.B.A. in Human Resource Management in May of 2011. I’d like to share my story of how I received the opportunity to transition from an intern to a professional role as a Recruiter at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington.

In the summer of 2008, I completed my first year of college at Marquette University and joined an internship program known as INROADS. The INROADS Internship Program is a non-profit program that strives to place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. Through this program, I was able to interview for and secure a position as an intern in the Human Resource Department at Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, WI. This is where I spent the last four summers gaining experience in Physician Recruitment, HR Services, Compensation and Benefits, and Employment.

As I floated around to various areas of HR, soaking in an abundance of information, I soon discovered what my niche and passion was. One summer day, I came in to work and all of the recruiters were booked solid with interviews. One recruiter was even double-booked. My supervisor asked if I could help out by conducting an interview. Without hesitation, I agreed and suddenly a mixture of excitement and nervousness settled over me. I had fifteen minutes to review the candidate’s resume, job description, and the interview question guide. I ended up doing pretty well for my very first interview and it was on this same day that I found out how much I truly enjoyed recruitment.

For the next two summers, I continued to intern in the Employment department. In 2011, I graduated and returned to Whitewater to start my MBA program. Winter break approached and I contacted my supervisor at Aurora to ask if they needed any help. Much to my surprise, I was asked to intern for two weeks at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, performing the recruiter role from start to finish. Again, a rush of excitement and nervousness came over me because I had never been responsible for the entire recruitment process. At this point, I’m sure my supervisor had more confidence in me than I had in myself! Nonetheless, I came into work to begin my two week internship and by the end of the first week, I applied for the open full time Recruiter position at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington.

The most rewarding and memorable part of my entire experience as an intern and now a professional here at Aurora is the amount of kindness, appreciation, and confidence that was given to me by coworkers, supervisors, and even the VP of Talent Acquisition. Every summer, I was assigned responsibilities that made a difference in the department. I was able to grasp the recruiter role because I was assigned a few interviews a day and was coached and trained throughout the way.

When I came to intern at Burlington for those two weeks, the HR Director, Christie Peterson, sat down with me and described the potential that she saw in me and the wonderful things that she’d heard about me from others throughout the system. This made me feel appreciated and a part of the Aurora team and it gave me the extra boost of confidence I needed to apply. Even to this day, I can call the Recruiters in Milwaukee for help just as I can rely on my team here at Burlington. The amount of resources I have access has contributed greatly to the smooth transition that I’ve experienced in my new role. I couldn’t feel more blessed to be a part of such a great health care organization that truly values all of its caregivers, even its interns.
