And worrying about how all those extra calories will translate into extra <a href="http://www.jelly-bellybegone.com/index.cfm?id=40284&#38;fuseaction=browse&#38;pageid=31" target="_blank">stomach fat</a> the next time you dare to step on the scale.</p>
<p>Well relax. It doesn&#8217;t have to be another holiday of nail biting between nibbling. All you need is the proper attitude and proven strategies that work to keep your calories-in, calories-out equation balanced.</p>
<p>Anyone who&#8217;s fought with the scale over the holidays knows the basic tricks: Drink water or eat an apple before heading out to a party.  But other strategies and perspectives may be new to you.</p>

It can be challenging with shorter days and hectic schedules to keep physical activity on the calendar, but now is not the time to go sedentary.</p>
<p>If you have young kids, you can build physical activity into your day by suggesting a walk to the park or a snowman-building contest or other winter fun. Or you might buddy up with a co-worker and hit the health club or a walking path at least three times a week, after work or during lunch. <strong>Good luck all!</strong></p>

<p>Thanksgiving is a Very Challenging Day for someone trying to lose weight.  And for me, it was my third day on Weight Watchers.  It was also a day I elected to go on a 10-mile run in the morning.  My master plan was to earn enough Activity Points to enjoy my feast guilt free.  Which indeed, I did.</p>
<p>So the Morning After the Thanksgiving Feast is always met with at worst, trepidation, and at best, curiosity.  At least by me.  And Friday morning is my weigh in day, so there wa no avoiding the trip to Scale City.</p>
<p>I got on the scale and&#8230;to my total delight, I&#8217;d <em>LOST WEIGHT!  </em>3.6 pounds.  Yippie!  In fact, I even lost weight over <em>Thanksgiving Day</em>, and I assure you, I ate plenty. </p>

<p>Yes, I know that the first week or so of a new diet causes you to lose &#8220;water weight&#8221; and it&#8217;s not the same as losing actual blubber.  But remember, my master plan is to have less literal weight to carry around with me during my marathon in February.  It matters little whether I&#8217;m carrying 3.6 pounds of water or 3.6 pounds of fat or 3.6 pounds of pixie dust.  It takes more effort to carry 3.6 pounds of anything than it does to travel without it. </p>
<p>So, delighted, I walk back into the bedroom and make my announcement to Happy Family.  Princess and Ninja were delighted, though they had the good sense to refrain from suggesting that we go out for Dairy Queen to celebrate. </p>
<p>Helpful Husband was very happy for me.  In fact, HH was so happy that he had just a little short-circuit in the compliment-and-encouragement section of his brain.  Yes, he complimented me all right.  And you can be the judge as to <a href="http://mommygogo.wordpress.com/2009/11/21/how-not-to-compliment-your-wife-who-runs/">whether it was better or worse than the last time</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how it went down:</p>
<p>HH:  Wow, honey.  That&#8217;s really great!  (This would have been a fine place for him to stop encouraging.)</p>
<p>Me:  Thanks!  I&#8217;m SO excited about it!</p>
<p>HH:  And you did all that in just three days.</p>
<p>Me:  Yes!</p>
<p>HH:  You know, you&#8217;ve lost more weight in the last three days than you did in over six months and almost 500 miles of running.</p>
<p>[Long pause as HH and I both ponder his last statement.  And his fate.]</p>
<p>Me:  Did you really just say that?</p>
<p>HH:  I was trying to compliment you.</p>
<p>Me:  Is that what that was?</p>
<p>HH:  I really am happy for you.</p>
<p>Me:  [sighing]  I know.  Thanks.</p>
<p>Epilogue:  In appreciation for this compliment, I spent the remainder of the day being Helpful Wife and announcing the point value of everything that HH was putting in his mouth.  It was the least I could do.  <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Here are some clues to the importance of water.  The earth’s surface is over 70% water.  Most of the human body is water.  Drinking water <a href="http://www.fantasyhealthball.com/fhb/l3_diet.html" target="_blank">delivers nutrients</a>, removes toxins, regulates body temperature, cushions organs and joints, and according to the Harvard Medical School, it lowers the risk of bladder cancer and kidney stones.  Are you feeling me yet?</p>
<p>And lack of water leads to dehydration.  My body lets me know when it is dehydrated by sapping my energy and giving me a throbbing headache.  The worst is trying something &#8220;bouncy&#8221; while dehydrated like jumping jacks or running.  That demonstrates pretty quickly how important water is to your system. </p>
<p>Just like everything in medicine, exactly how much you need to drink each day is a matter of disagreement.  The most honest scientific answer we can give you is:  it depends.  But the rule heard most often is 8 eight-ounce glasses a day (8&#215;8) for the average adult.  This comes from the idea that we need about liter of water per 1,000 calories burned.  You’ll need more if you exercise a lot, burn a lot of calories, or live where it is hot and dry.  Not all fluid needed by the body must be from beverages as there is also water in foods (such as fruits).  And if you are taking our <a href="http://www.fantasyhealthball.com/fhb/l3_play.html#scorecard" target="_blank">fruit challenge</a>, you are eating plenty of those!  You might get about 20% of your daily water needs through foods and the rest through beverages.</p>

Your body will look fit and trim with more muscle, even if it adds pounds to the scale. So, someone who weighs in at 140 pounds and has a lot of lean muscle mass will look better and thinner in their clothes, as opposed to someone who weighs the same on the scale, but is fatter and has less lean muscle.</p>
<p>This is why you need to diet for fat loss instead of following traditional diets that expect you to lose weight. Even though you might only lose a few pounds per week if you diet correctly, the truth is that you’re swapping out your light but ugly fat for heavy but attractive lean muscle mass.</p>
<p>Another bonus is that your new muscles will work with you to lose fat even if you stop dieting because muscles naturally burn more calories as compared to fats. Now, in addition to being able to wear smaller clothes and look better, your body will automatically burn more calories thanks to the fact that you have less fat and more muscle.</p>

<p>Let’s be honest, there aren’t that many of us who can or want to keep up a restrictive diet endlessly, so when that weight returns, it will do so with a bang. The body’s response to starvation is to store more calories as fat, so you may actually end up putting on more weight once you go off the diet.</p>
<p>Do not diet for weight loss; diet for fat loss if you want to look better, improve your body composition and achieve both for the long haul. If you can diet for fat loss, you are working towards long-lasting and permanent fat burning results.</p>
