i hate this feeling.

Losing You is a psychological thriller, and apparently this writing duo (Nicci French is a pseudonym for a married couple who write together: Nicci Gerrard and Sean French) is really good. This was the first book I’d ever read by Nicci French and while I wasn’t blown away, it was really pretty good.

Losing You takes place over the course of one day. There are no chapters, though there are a few breaks to smooth over a transition, but the lack of chapters gives the book a frantic feeling, because like the protagonist, the reader most likely won’t come up for air.

Nina Landry’s daughter, Charlie (short for Charlotte), has gone missing, and not only is it Nina’s birthday, but the family was supposed to be leaving from their home, Sandling Island (60 miles from London), to go on vacation to Florida. Even though Charlie’s 15, Nina finds it hard to believe that she would have run away on this day of all days.

The police are called, and they’re less than concerned. Charlie’s FIFTEEN, and seeing as how she’s only been missing a few hours, they’re sure she’ll show up, even if it’s in a day or two. Nina, though, is convinced that something has happened to her daughter, so she sets out to find out what she can. Slowly, as Nina talks to her daughter’s friends and acquaintances, she realizes that Charlie had quite a few secrets that Nina hadn’t even suspected, and it’s these very secrets that makes Nina more frantic to find her daughter.

The story is doled out at just the right pace. I never knew what she was going to find out next and I certainly didn’t expect the ending. I liked how all the characters were developed. As the story takes place on an island, everyone seems to know everyone and all the characters are very distinct. I certainly never guessed the perpetrator, which was a nice surprise.

Losing You was good, though it wasn’t great. It was a fun read, and a refreshing read for the genre. If you enjoy thrillers, I’d definitely recommend this book.

Reading Matters

Hi all. It’s Bo. As you all know, I haven’t been on lately. School is overloading with volleyball and piano and I’m getting really stressed out. I’m not quitting. Don’t ever think like that. Anyways, the other day I came on, I felt excluded. Somewhat ignored. I’m not sure if I was being quiet, or if no one wanted to hang around me. I’m also super worried about the Stock-thing or whatever it is. I don’t want to go into a depression, and the government needs everyone to pay them a million dollars. I’m not joking. You’ve heard about the bailout thing and the Stock Level or whatever has decreased tremendously. So I’m juggling worries, stories, sadness, homework, boys, and volleyball on one plate. Bit much, hm? Well, I think I’m done with Mateo. Then again, he still is cute. Oh well. *Shrugs*

Anyways, I’ll come on when I can. I’ll miss you guys, and I’m not quitting. Don’t worry. Have no fear, Bo will be here. Bye-

Zur Abwechslung mal was ganz frisches.

Randy Newman, geb. 28.11.43 in Los Angeles, eigentlich bekannt für seine Filmmusik (z.B. Monster AG), hat sein (ich glaube) 14. Album herausgebracht.

Es besteht aus 7 neuen und 3 bereits bekannten Songs. Wie gewohnt sozialkritisch, spielt Randy Newman auch mit 64 Jahren einen Blues der sich sehen lassen kann. Besonders der Titelsong “Harps and Angels” hat mich auf Anhieb überzeugt. Piano, begleitet von Bläsern, Streichern und Harmonium und einem fast engelhaftem Backgroundchor handelt es sich dabei um einen wunderschönen Sonntagnachmittag-Song.

Man hört zwar deutlich den Klang eines erfahrenen Filmmusikkomponisten heraus, auch der Bezug zur Country-Musik lässt sich nicht verleugnen, aber nichtsdestotrotz, vielleicht auch ein bisschen deshalb gefällt mir das Album so gut. Ich glaube es ist eines der Besten, die ich dieses Jahr gehört habe.

I’ve been f(l)ailing in my duty somewhat, in my writerly self/blog, and actually have two new online reviews to point toward, here and here. Both kind and insightful. Heavens! Many thanks. I especially always appreciate it when reviews go onto amazon… those five stars go a long, long way. Says she mother of a twelve year old boy who steers much of his life around music, film, game and book starred reviews.

Might as well say thank you to the muse too, whoever she is for me, was for me in Losing You. She had something to say. Albeit in a quiet, succinct and mysterious kind of way.

Losing You by Patricia Debney

A book that gives us a glimpse of the lives of two women: Marilyn and Hillary over the space of a few days. In the first half of the book we hear the voice of Marilyn and the second half we hear the voice of Hilary. Marilyn a counsellor loses her father and is in the process of grieving and re-evaluating her life and even though she guides many of her clients through their various problems, she feels a bit at a loss about her own existence with husband Doug and son Lewis. Her new friend Hilary has a son Aaron, who is the same age as Lewis and her other half is Adam who also appears to have a soft spot for Marilyn.

This was a very compelling read and these two women seem to be trying to find their place in the world and it really does make you think and wonder about the lives of others and how complex they may actually be. I really enjoyed reading it and wondering what did happen to Marilyn as the book has undertones that something macabre may have happened, or at least that’s the way it made me feel, as I thought it had an eerie feel most of the way through.

I thought this was a great read that is asking me to read again shortly and I strongly recommend it.

Chew on this Jon and Izzy…..

Jan Terri was earnestly trying to break into the music biz and she achieved a bit of cult status for her singing “style” and poorly produced VHS videos.  Marilyn Manson actually had her open on a few concert dates.  How about that?

This would be pretty cool but maybe there can be a you and me? You have to admit we have to us give us a try. It’s been nearly 2 years and don’t you think we should open the bottle and have a taste of our aged and yet untapped chemistry. I admit we have a little work on taking the perfect picture but that first photo op was pretty damn cute. I guess our communication could also use a little work. But I would bet we would be a fun and good looking superhero duo!

While this feels a bit unnatural I figured I would put it out there and see what you think about giving us a try! I know I am weird in that I probably don’t react nor act the same way from one day to the next and don’t exhibit all those female qualities…but maybe we can talk it out and find out each others expectations. So before we hop into other relations we can say we have at least tried. Either way I have set a possible destination but I will let you decide & be the guide. Maybe we can talk when you return.

I surely won’t be surprised if you do not reply.(smiles) I will leave it at this, all I can say is I have tried and we can no longer wonder about a you and I. This is not an end to our current relationship I’ve got you now so I always have place for you in my life.

A few last words.
If you are worried about losing you…trust me I won’t let you do that. (I like you just as you are).

If you are worried about falling in love, well you might do that, but no worries I would never take advantage of that.
