Back in September, we reported that Billy Corgan had found a replacement for original Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin after a quick open casting call. Corgan’s choice of 19-year-old Portland, Ore. native Mike Byrne came as a huge surprise — but in the following video, we’re given a glimpse into the audition process that resulted in the eyebrow-raising pick.

The documentary footage shows the wide-eyed teenager living out the thrill of a lifetime as viewers are made witness to the birth of a musical relationship.

The candid footage comes courtesy of the David Lynch Foundation, a non-profit artist promotion network, film house and meditation advocacy group founded by the controversial filmmaker. Lynch, whose dark, dreamlike work has plenty in common with the Pumpkins’ musical output, is a noted fan of Corgan’s. “Billy Corgan is a Magical Musician-a singer-songwriter with his own unique voice and way,” he says. “A deep honest coolness emerges every time and his music has big lasting power.”

This documentary short is not the first item the two artists have in common. Back in 1997, Corgan penned a song for Lynch’s film ‘Lost Highway,’ a story he shares in the interview portion of the video. Without giving too much away, let’s just say Shaquille O’Neal is involved. Have a look below.

Lynch doesn’t really discuss the content of his films much. Yeah, there are those who have no appetite for his enigmatic work. Personally, it’s what I live for. And frankly, if you don’t share this appetite, it’s likely I won’t have an appetite for you.

I catalog my filmmic and personal lives according to the time line of Lynch films. With the exception of ERASERHEAD, I have never missed a first-run screening.

I single out LOST HIGHWAY for this post, for one reason only. It is his most comprehensive on the subject of sex. Lynch takes us on an experiential journey of sex. Yes, the “narrative” describes the ascent and descent of a man who murders his adulterous wife. Although there are many compelling, horrifying, and beautiful images (too many to list), my inference came from my fascination with the marital bed scene:

Husband and wife, in missionary position, conclude coitus in perfunctory sadness. The implication is that of premature ejaculation or lost erection. Whatever it may be, we understand a mutual impotence, a dissociation between them. The film proceeds to quite literally flesh out the existential permutations of sexual relationship and emotion. The extreme manifestations are staggering:

bliss, comfort, complacency, boredom, repulsion, alienation, frustration, guilt, disgust, confusion, deception, entrapment, shame, humiliation, subjugation, chastity, entrapment, seduction, danger, empowerment, obsession, control, sadism, deviance, fetish, mania, frenzy, monstrosity, extremity, exuberance, brusqueness, ephemera, luminousness, scintillation…

All are effects of our bifurcated leading femme. We know she’s never quite present, but instead moves through the story with disassociated empowered consciousness, the distance is infinite as we desperately attempt to reach her. And although there isn’t much more we will ever discover beyond her explicit nude form, we never have the satisfaction of real intimacy with her. It’s her bewitching glow that keeps us in persuit.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE woke me UP. Yes, it did.

For four years, I was anesthetized by a long necessary breakup out of an innocuous and oppressively boring relationship…. and THE STRAIGHT STORY. I was mostly afraid that mister Lynch had abandoned this perv for lighter fare. Although I appreciated his semi-hiatus material quite a lot, I literally fantasized about LOST HIGHWAY’s depravity and beauty. Often.

Fast forward to my delightful snarl during my first screening of MD. I had purposefully not read any material about the long-belabored production. I went in with no information. When that blue box was unlocked, I felt a real shift in my appetite. This had its origins in television?

Although I had cultivated a famously wide range of predilections and partners at this time, for whatever reasons, I had not come across a woman I cared to explore with beyond a dalliance. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I was into the ladies, but until now, they had almost been perfunctory lays, like most. Somehow, I just hadn’t met the right girl.

One gorgeous foggy afternoon, a friend invited me to an Easter brunch at a remarkably situated glamorous home he had been house sitting. It had a view of a dark heavy crackling eucalyptus grove. So high up, the occasional band of fog drifted by on the outdoor deck.

I was a little jetlagged from a fetish sextrip I had taken to the East Coast. Lent was over, and I was finally sated.

As I stepped onto the dramatically cantilevered deck, a tall figure in large dark sunglasses caught my eye. Her hair was black, blacker than mine. It was like velvet; it shone and disappeared as it fell to her shoulders. We made long sustained eye contact across the deck, through the small crowd. She moved toward me with directness and someone introduced us. I only heard her thick European accent, noticing her pale skin and red full lips. She was much taller than I and was still brazen enough to enjoy a cigarette among PC Bay Area health-conscious fuckheads. This is the girl.

She was very interested in everything I had to say, and I just could not stop thinking about how I was going to get her home. Thankfully, I’d arrived alone and I had intentions of later attending the jam-session closing of a local historic jazz club.

It was a date. We’d stopped by my place to drop my luggage. I took the chance to freshen up and change into an incredibly revealing black wrap dress and Luichiny platform boots. I reveled in the thought of her looking through my apartment while I showered. I emerged with wet hair and a flame of lipstick on my mouth. I had her attention.

I drove us, top down, to North Beach. It was no accident that my dress had ridden far up on the warm wool seat.

We held hands as we made our way into the club. There had been a line, but I suspect our obvious lust inspired our host to seat us front and center. We felt like jazz royalty; Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft were seated to our left.

Between sets, we chatted about film, a common interest, nee, obsession. She asked, “Have you seen MULHOLLAND DRIVE?” I quietly marveled a bit, reserving my excitement, as I do when anyone asks me about the film. “Yes, I have. It’s a perfect film,” I responded. We both simultaneously followed with, “I love David Lynch.” Waiter, check please.

We arrived at my home full of mojitos, stumbling into the bedroom. I had a glowing lamp that slowly cycled through my favorite end of the spectrum: blue, violet, magenta, red. I kissed her deeply for a long while, then gently lowered her onto the bed. My hands moved slowly through her hair. That hair. We kissed and moved over each other until it was everything I could do to stop thinking about fucking her. It’s different for girls. I didn’t want this to be just another fuck. She whispered in that accent, “I want it too. Now is okay.”

I unbuttoned her white broad cloth shirt and was delighted to see she was wearing a black satin bra. It’s a preference of mine: contrasting bras that purposefully reveal through lighter clothing. I knelt back and unwrapped my dress then removed my bra. I left my boots on. Her eyes widened at my nipple piercings and she smiled as she breathily declared: “fuck.”

Down to our underwear, the last bastion of clothing before it was all game, I took the time to appreciate the peek a boo sliver of the black satin panty she wore. I slipped my fingers from her lower back, over her soft roundness, then under the edge of the panty. I wanted to feel the lowest curve of her ass. When I brushed my hand over her Mons, it was soaked. Nothing would stop me now. Hands on each others’ clits, mouths too hungry to fill, we pulled off the rest of our foundations. Now, there was nothing but our unmitigated flesh. She was soft, hot, pliable, and wet in my hands and mouth. The attraction was remarkable; we fucked until the dawn. I hadn’t fucked that hard and meant it in forever.

When I made the connection later that morning, I stopped in my tracks. She shared her name with our MULHOLLAND DRIVE protagonist’s lover and even bore a physical similarity. It’s been a long time that I’ve acknowledged Mister Lynch and I share interests in fetish, particularly in brunettes, undergarments, and footwear. Like Betty and Camilla, the two of us launched into this adventure quietly, privately, passionately…as in the Deco interior of that apartment in the hazy dark hills of Hollywood.

We remain lovers and constant friends, not owing to description of relationship. All I know is that when I sat next to her and another profoundly close friend during the screening of INLAND EMPIRE, I was as ecstatic as Saint Theresa.

She is The Girl.

¿Entonces? ¿Cómo suena The Circle? Y The Circle no me hace cambiar de parecer.

1. We Weren’t Born to Follow: primer tema y single, es el modelo ideal.

4. Superman Tonight
5. Bullet
6. Thorn in My Side
7. Live Before You Die
8. Brokenpromiseland
9. Love’s the Only Rule
10. Fast Cars

Jarvis Cocker took over Shoreditch’s Village Underground for three days of workshops, jamming, cake eating and informal performances. Taking lead from his ‘happening’ at Galerie Chappe in Paris earlier this year, Jarvis invited everyone to bring their own instruments and take part in yoga, burlesque and Jivamukti yoga sessions, all taught by instructors, with Jarvis and his recruits providing the soundtrack. Or you could just come to watch and munch on home-made chocolate cake and curly wurlys from Jarvis’ personally overseen Tuck Shop and chillax on big inflatables.

He couldn’t have picked a better venue than Village Underground, with its disused railway carriages and excellent acoustics. It is housed under a viaduct, like a mini version of The Arches in Glasgow, and it felt a lot more welcoming and comfy than the overly-lit, white box setting of an art gallery.

I dropped by during the ‘Bring your own Instrument’ session and Jarvis was perched on a stool playing guitar with members of his band and audience members. They seemed to be mostly improvising, creating dreamy sound scapes, although it sounded very together, like they’d been playing together for years.

Throughout the residency, Charley from the nearby Pure Evil gallery worked on a large graffiti piece dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which provided the backdrop on the stage. He was still adding the finishing touches during the final concert!

I hadn’t made plans to go to the concert, as I thought it must have been sold out, but there were still tickets left to buy at the venue (£30 seemed like a lot, but then again, the rest of the festivities had been for free).

Support came from American anti-folk nutter Thomas Truax, who had a whole menagerie of pimped up, hand-made instruments, which look like futurist noise machines. Truax started out as a solo performer in 90s New York alongside the likes of Beck and Lach and worked as an animator on MTV’s Celebrity Death Match before decamping to London.

Thomas plays everything himself and records each instrument live, layering up the different sounds, then singing and playing blues guitar over the top. He played experimental songs from his latest album Songs from the films of David Lynch, including a cover of I Put A Spell On You from Lost Highway. The folk at the front were pretty into it, but there were some sceptical mutterings from the oldies at the back, who were probably hoping Jarvis would enlist one of his famous mates to open for him.

Finally, Jarvis appeared and played songs from his two solo albums Jarvis and Further Complications. He appeared as skinny and bookish as ever, but when Jarvis starts singing, he is utterly seductive with that inimitably sexy voice and and quiet Northern charm.

There was plenty of bum wiggling and thrusting going on and at one point, he led the audience into a quick aerobics session, as keeping fit seemed to have got pushed off the daytime schedule.

His new songs are more rock based and have a cool cosmic sound that goes into prog-rock indulgence in the slightly comical Pilchard, complete with interactive dance routine. Further Complications has some hilarious lyrics but there’s an underlying melancholy and feeling of disappointment that could be attributed to the break-down of his marriage to Camille Bidault-Waddington earlier this year.

Jarvis’ main preoccupation of the night was making sure that everyone had enjoyed the workshops and most important the Tuck Shop. He was concerned that the Roast Beef Monster might not be to everyone’s taste and proceeded to hurl packets of Love Hearts into the crowd.

Watch Jarvis singing Leftovers and having smoochy moment with a lucky girl at the front…

This is probably the first time I’ve posted more than one post in the same day. Although, the other one was pretty short, and I think that this one will be too. There are just some random things that I want to talk about, I guess. And I like to procrastinate.

Since the end of 2009 is in sight, lots of sites are putting up their lists of the best movies/books/albums/music videos/whatever of the decade. I’ve done a little bit of that with my Best Performances of the Decade series (be sure to check it out!) Pitchfork amassed their crazy 200 Best Albums list. Pitchfork is one of those things that I love to hate. And the weird thing is, Pitchfork covers most of the music that I like. There’s not too much reason for me to hate them. Except maybe their pretention. But I can be pretentious, too, so I guess I’m a hypocrite now, on top of everything else. Anyways, they chose Kid A and Funeral as their top 2 albums. That is so predictable. Maybe I just like being contrary, but I think those two albums are two of the most overrated albums around. I love Radiohead and the Arcade Fire. But both of them have released other albums that I like a thousand times more this decade. Kid A and Funeral are good, but I guess I just don’t see what all the fuss is about.

Conversely, Paste magazine is doing a purge of their “best of the decade” lists of everything imagineable. I’ve started working my way through their best movies list. It seems like they’re making interesting choices, and I want to read all of their comments. In the first ten, it’s a nice mix of more obvious choices (High Fidelity), slightly more unexpected choices (Hotel Rwanda, which was a pretty amazing film), and stuff that I’ve never heard of. I’m interested to see what albums they’ll choose. I bet it won’t be Funeral or Kid A (now watch me be wrong). I respect Paste’s opinion a lot more, even if they can be pretentious sometimes, too. On top of being a pretty decent magazine, they have a really good blog/website thing going, which is nice.

To switch to something totally different, my prof told us today that we’ll be watching David Lynch’s Lost Highway in our cinema studies class next week. I’ve been kind of baffled by some of his choices so far (Winchester ‘73, Tuff Turf), but David Lynch seems to make a bit more sense, I suppose. I’ve never seen any of his films, so I guess I can’t really say, but he just seems arty and weird enough, from what I gather. I don’t really know anything about this film, since I usually hear Mullholland Drive or Blue Velvet when I hear people talk about him. But I looked it up on IMDB, and Henry Rollins is in it. So that should be interesting.

So yeah. I don’t have too much else to say. I’ve been working on my own best albums of the decade list, so hopefully that’ll be up before too long. When does the decade end, anyways? Because it seems like 2009 would be the last year, but then some people are saying that 2010 is part of this decade? Oh well. I’m counting it as 2000-2009.

So on Saturday night, Taylor Swift went on SNL and performed this funny song. I was really impressed with her comic delivery in numerous respects. She really squeezes all the comedic juice out of a fairly by-the-numbers bit of writing:

I love the great little touch at the end where she says they’re going to have a great show and Kanye West is not there, exactly where the tradition is to mention that a musical guest is there. They got that just right.

Fun Camels With Hammers fact, my post on the Kanye West interruption of Taylor Swift’s speech currently ranks as the fourth most viewed post in the website’s short history and it marked a watershed point in our traffic which essentially tripled its daily rate after that post and has maintained that level ever since. How’s that for unpredictable?

And one last curiosity: is it just me or does anyone else wonder why the creepy guy at the party in Lost Highway is sitting behind Taylor Swift at the drum set? In case you don’t remember him, below is that scene from that film—compare it with the footage of Swift’s performance above.

Lyrics have always fascinated me. I am a person interested in the written word and its application m

Lyrics have always fascinated me. I am a person interested in the written word and its application more than I am someone who focuses on the musicality of music. I grew up obsessing about what certain songs were about. Then at a certain age I became aware, thanks to my relationships with musical people and interviews with musicians I idolized, that a lot of songs don’t really mean anything. I know this sounds basic to a lot of people that aren’t as focused on the words in songs, but to me it was nothing less than revelatory.

In retrospect the lack of meaning in some lyrics shouldn’t have been such a surprise to a guy who was more of a Paul McCartney guy than a John Lennon guy. Paul’s songs often sounded like they were about something but mostly fall apart upon closer inspection. Charles Manson may have thought “Helter Skelter” was about an impending war between the races but in reality it was simply an attempt to write a song that was louder and more violent than what the Rolling Stones were writing at the time. The lyrics are largely a description of what’s it like to play on a playground slide.

There is a benefit to focusing on the words of a song. Lyrics were the reason I think I was able to develop a very diverse taste in music. They Might Be Giants don’t have much in common with Del the Funky Homosapien musically, but they are both very adept at turning a phrase or coming up with a clever lyrical construct (full disclosure: I just used the phrase ‘clever lyrical construct’ without fully knowing what it even means or is supposed to mean). When you are more concerned with what a song is saying than how it sounds, it opens you up to a lot of music you may not have cared about otherwise. Of course what constitutes “good lyrics” is as subjective as anything else. When I was about 15 I thought Simon and Garfunkel were excellent lyricists, but at this point in my life I think a lot of their lyrics sound like a freshman poetry seminar (Simon did continue to mature as a lyric writer though and the lyrics on Graceland are suberb).

To many musicians a song is a chance to explore and experiment with a unique sound they haven’t yet tried out. Using “Helter Skelter” again as an example, Paul simply hadn’t written a song that rocked that hard before and so he threw together some lyrics around the melody. What the lyrics actually are saying is by far the least important part of that song. That lack of loaded meaning doesn’t take away from the visceral appeal of the song. The reverse can be true too, good lyrics aren’t enough to get you past something that (for you) is unlistenable. I think Tom Waits writes some really excellent lyrics and I love the atmosphere his words and music combine to make, but his voice is such that I can never listen to more than 2 Tom Waits songs in a row.

Right now I’ve come to a place where I still lyrics are one of the key aspects of a song, but I no longer expect those lyrics to contain a deeper meaning. Lyrics are another color the artist has on her palette to use as she wishes.

Simultaneous to this discovery I had a similar experience with film. Like a lot of guys in their 20’s I went through my David Lynch phase. I watched all of ‘Twin Peaks’, ‘Lost Highway’, ‘Mulholland Drive’, etc. And though I didn’t connect to some of the most esoteric Lynch (I turned ‘Eraserhead’ off in boredom after about 30 minutes) I did slowly learn to accept that sometimes there isn’t a big unifying “What This All Means” to be had in a movie. You can watch ‘Mulholland Drive’ and you can certainly tie together a lot of seemingly random and bizarre things into a very workable theory of what the movie is “about” but there are still a lot of loose ends and odd moments that don’t quite fit in the puzzle you’re constructing. But that’s Lynch’s intent, a lot of the images and words he chooses are meant to create a feeling or mood. There isn’t a hidden metaphor you’re missing out on, the purpose was to make you unsettled, or scared, etc.

So a song could be about being very loud and a movie could be about making you feel alienated. They may exist and be fantastic works of art with nary a literal “meaning” to be had. To a lot of people this information is met with a “Yeah…and?” but for a young man who grew up with his head in a book the freedom to take in art without searching for a meaning was one of the most freeing pop culture experiences I’ve ever had.

we’d like to commemorate one of the band which will remains in Plasticrane’s heart:
LOST HIGHWAY.
The band disbanded a lot of time ago but, shortly after the recording of HUMANA EP
(Plasticrane, 2008), the band produced two other songs.
But then, Lost Highway died and rot. Its body melt with the soil, and became part of the universe. This Ep is Lost Highway last epitaph, which lays in the green plains of northern Italy, precisely on Plasticrane’s server. Visit it in your daily musical excursions and leave a flower in its remembrance.
Thank you and goodnight…Ep!”

I got very excited yesterday when I got an email from Amazon telling me that it had been dispatched. Even though Royal Mail were on strike, I could still get the album before the Monday release date thanks to Amazon ditching Royal Mail when the strikes were announced. Alas, my excitement was quashed when I read the email in a bit more detail and saw it was being sent out by Indigostarfish, Amazon’s preferred merchant and still with Royal Mail – denied.

On a big Non Jovi forum many people have already heard the album thanks to it being leaked and available on download websites. I have resisted temptation and will wait until I have the CD in my hands before I play it. On the plus side the reports coming back from those that have heard is universally great. People are saying it’s the best album since These Days, which Bon Jovi fans the world over see as the zenith of Bon Jovi music.

With the Royal Mail strike in mind I’ll probably buy a vanilla version from a supermarket on the way to work on Monday, such is my impatience!

Now, onto matters of outrage – the prices of the tickets for the shows at the O2 in London, which started off as 5 shows but has since risen to 8. For more information on the fan response and prices I suggest you go here: BonJovi-Live.com where fan comments have been and continue to be documented.

When I went to see Bon Jovi at the very first show at The O2 in 2007 I paid £60+ for each ticket, this past Saturday I paid £45 for each ticket and the seats are far better so from my personal perspective I’m doing ok. If people are moaning that they don’t want to pay high prices to be at the front then don’t, buy a cheaper ticket and sit further back – that’s life. Oh yeah, I’m going to see Bon Jovi, for the 5th time, on June 13th 2010 – good times!

Pelle Erobreren (Bille August, 1987). (***1/2)

The Ladykillers (Alexander Mackendrick, 1955). (****1/2)

The Happening (M. Night Shyamalan, 2008). Mooi uitgangspunt (The Trees Strike Back), maar frustrerend flauw uitgewerkt, met duffe dialogen en gedrogeerd acteerwerk. Een paar goeie momenten in een saaie bedoening. Unbreakable blijft ’s mans beste. (*1/2)

W. (Oliver Stone, 2008). (***1/2)

Into The Wild (Sean Penn, 2007). (***1/2)

Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997). Ooit in de cinema gezien. Of beter: ondergaan. Tweede visie was eerder frustrerend. (***1/2)

The Short Films Of David Lynch (2002). (***)

Whale Rider (Niki Caro, 2002).

The album title has several meanings. Some may say that with this album we have come full circle. Others may see The Circle as never ending. I see it as very hard to get in to and even harder to get out of”.

Haast jullie!

No, no me refiero a Topo gigo, sino a Mikey Mouse(Disney).
