Fitness gyms have been the newest pit stops for yuppies and others who choose to live a healthy lifestyle.

Speaking of gyms and healthy living, I remembered Ringo Borlain, the wide-bodied Filipino world body building champion three years ago.

People love Judd Apatow. They appreciate his whole “raunchy comedy with some heart” stuf

People love Judd Apatow. They appreciate his whole “raunchy comedy with some heart” stuff he does. I myself am not a fan. There may be a modicum of heart, but his movies still fall into the same trappings of most raunchy, sexed up comedies. There’s usually a couple of things that are down right creepy or gross in all his movies, and while I’ll give him credit for raising above the level of, say, American Pie, he’s still making banal, gratuitously raunchy movies. Also, apropos of nothing, I’ve never actually seen American Pie or American Pie 2, but I have seen American Wedding, which was, of course, shitty.

Now, if you want to see an R-Rated comedy with some heart that’s well made, look no further than I Love You, Man. Paul Rudd rarely, if ever, fails to deliver in any of his roles. I’ve been a fan of his since back in the day. In fact, one of the reasons I actually saw The 40-Year-Old Virgin in the first place is because of my affinity for Paul Rudd and because I liked Seth Rogan on Apatow’s show Undeclared. Over time, Rogan has started to wear on me a bit (don’t we all feel that way?) but I still like Rudd. Apparently Jason Segal was also in Undeclared, but I don’t recall him, and I haven’t seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I hear there are penises, or so the legend goes.

If you will allow me, as a big time comedy guy, a moment to name check all the people in this film who I like who made appearances. Tom Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Andy Samberg, Jane Curtin, Robb Heubel, Aziz “I don’t know his last name, sorry”, Matt Walsh, and I believe there was a brief appearance from Ian Roberts. Also, Larry Wilmore! I also like seeing all these guys I know and like in movies. It is part of what made Walk Hard so good as well.

Anyway, on to the actual review. Rudd plays a guy named Peter Klaven, who has just gotten engaged to Zooey, played by Rashida Jones. Jones is pleasant enough, but I’ve never been that big of a fan. I always feel like she is trying to be naturalistic as an actress, and it shows sometimes. She is too non-chalant almost. However, I do like Zooey Deschanel. Just saying.

Anyway, if I may start another paragraph with the exact same word, and I can because this is my motherfucking blog and don’t you forget it, Peter realizes he doesn’t have any guy friends, and the help of his gay brother, his mom, and weird creepy internet friend finding websites don’t help. Then, he meets Segal’s Sydney, and their friendship starts.

A lot of actual emotions and realistic issues then spring up as Zooey suddenly finds herself competing for Peter’s friendship with Sydney. Sydney is a brash, boorish, and immature man, but given Peter’s maturity, while he helps loosen him up a tad he doesn’t make him, you know, an asshole whole or anything. The kind of thing that would happen in a lesser movie. I also enjoyed the fact that Sydney didn’t change either. I was expecting, having seen a lot of movies, that he was going to realize the errors of his ways and mature kind of like the movie Step Brothers or one million others. However, he doesn’t, and that plays more true to life to me. People don’t change. Or, they quickly change then quickly change back. Homer Simpson taught me that, among other things.

So basically, we watch Peter and Zooey and Peter and Sydney’s relationships evolve. It is also a really funny movie, although Rudd’s awkward act gets a little tiring at times.

It also, and this may come as a surprise to you, happens to be an R-Rated movie where nothing really feels gratuitous. I can’t stand unnecessary raunchiness or nudity. It is pathetic and says to the world, “I’ve got nothing of substance to offer you, so hopefully this will appeal to those of you in the audience who are as immature and sad inside as I am.” There is none of that here. Not a once is a woman objectified in this film. They are all treated, get this, like human beings. What a concept! It’s nice to be able to watch an R-Rated comedy that is actually mature. Maybe there is hope for this world yet. Nah, I’m just fucking with you. It’s hopeless. However, instead of contemplating that, why not watch some hilarious and excellent comedy? If that appeals to you, might I recommend I Love You, Man? It also has Jon Favreau in it! And the music is pretty good too. Good times! Final Verdict: 9/10

Oscar night Donna spangler and sabrina parisi went to the viewing party at the Beverly Hills Hotel for the night of 100 stars put on by Norby Walters. The event is heald during the Oscars in order to view the event on large screens in the ballrooms in the hotel while having a dinner. All of the red carpet attendees wore lovely gowns and dresses. Many celebrities attended including Bridget Neilson, Barbera Eden, Sean Young, paul williams, alana curry, lou ferigno,Martin Landau, Pat Boone, Kristy Swanson,Lorenzo Lamas, Brande Roderick, Cindy Margolis, Florence Henderson, and many more. The event had many paparzizi and videoaugraphers there to announce the arrival of the stars attending the viewing. It is said that there have been many attendees of past academy award winners and TV stars that come to this party. It is a fun party to go to because the celebrities can mingle with their peers like Sean Young who managed to joke around with some of her celeb friends including jim Belucci and then have a nice dinner at the elegant Beverly Hills Hotel which is home to Hollywood royalty. Ed Lozzi and Associates is the PR for this grand event. Several A list stars were seen in the Hotel including Ashton Kucher who did not attend the viewing party but did relax in another area in the Hotel.

Happy Monday! Here we have a poster for “The Incredible Hulk” movie. What? you say… that doesn’t look like the movie poster I know! Yes, I know, stop talking – let me finish. In Australia they released the original T.V. pilot in the theaters. This is the poster that marketed the movie. Look at that image! How great is that! There’s a really great older model that is exactly in the pose of that Hulk. I don’t have it… yet…

The Transformation!

There is smaller pictures of Bill Bixby and a couple of Lou Ferigno as the Hulk. Just looking at the images makes me think of the scenes where Ferigno would throw someone and then they would cut to the guy flying through the air and landing in tires, trash, or into water. I remember a great episode that features a fashion designer and when there was a Hulk-out Lou Ferigno pushed a guy into… CLOTHES! And it knocked him out to boot! Man, I loved that show!

I love finding unique Hulk items like this one – it’s a Hulk mask from 1978, even has that Ferigno look to it, and it’s way more comfortable then any on the newer masks they have on the market. It’s rubber – but the back is cloth and hair – so it doesn’t get too hot when wearing it. Once I got it I had my neice put it on and threw the Hulk hands on her and scared her little brother half to death. It happened so quick I couldn’t get any pictures. But it was hilarious

Profile!

I found a few Hulk masks at my local costume shop – but I’m not sure I want to buy them (I probably will – but maybe save some money by buying off ebay) but none of them are as cool as this one though. I love these vintage pieces. So much more personality than the new stuff. Although, I do love the new stuff!

Last night we went to the late showing of Incredible Hulk in Vue, Liffey Valley; one of those spur of the moment decisions that sometimes work out so well. I loved the old series, and Ang Lee’s awful hamfisted offering upset me a lot. An awful lot. The story was clunky and the “hulk” was a cartoon that the 80s might have thought well executed.

But the new offering boasts America’s most underrated and accomplished actor, Edward Norton and that swayed me; plus I really wanted to enjoy the memory of Hulk again, not think of the last movie. I wanted something that treated the story with affection, nodded to the classic TV series, delivered top class action, had some heart to it and made me care about the monstrous green man.

The Incredible Hulk did all that and more with bells on. And then some. The story is well thought out, and well executed; there are moments of humour, intelligent reasoning and above all fun. The Incredible Hulk should be fun, I feel. Liv Tyler as Betty Ross was beautiful if a little underutilised, but she brought grit and pathos to the one dimensional “lost love/faithful girlfriend” role. Edward Norton was both convincing as Banner and brought a nicely vulnerable touch to the role – pushed, pursued, betrayed, worn out. Lou Ferrigno, the original Hulk, appeared in a great little cameo as did Stan Lee himself. Lou also voices the Hulk.

But the real star is the Hulk, monstrous, ragefilled but somehow childlike and lost. Initially only Banner’s love for Betty seems to have survived the transformation but the Hulk has feelings, and fears and pain and that’s what makes Incredible Hulk a great Superhero movie.

Oh that and the fight scenes..lots of great set pieces, amazing effects, noise and bangs and explosions and a true villainous pairing in William Hurt (General Ross) and Tim Roth (EmilBlonsky). Great fun, a movie that doesn’t bother with labourious back story but rightly assumes the audience will be able to work it out as they go; providing thrills and spills.

Those wanting commentary on the dark nature of mankind might be disappointed. This is a fun, summer movie, not a treatise on the dark night of the soul.

Those wanting to reclaim and enjoy the Hulk, with a nod to those themes and a good heart to the story, will be delighted.

Seasons 3 & 4 are coming to DVD on June 3rd! Check out the announcement by clicking on the image above. This will coincide with the release of the Hulk movie coming out the 13th. This is pretty great news… because it took almost 4 years to get the 9th season of Cheers to come out – thankfully to the new movie we won’t have to wait that long for the Hulk!

No one puts baby in the corner! And no one puts Hulk in a cage! – Well, apparently they do… Hulk seems so upset that he’s turning back into Bruce – or in this case David – just look at his hands!

Most of these were brought out in 2003 to try to capitalize on the movie. Too bad the movie wasn’t liked very much. The Ultimate Collection has some of the best episodes from the television show. The 2 animated DVD’s – the second one collects 3 or 4 of the ‘96 animated show – and the first one collects the entire ‘66 animated show that I bought off ebay. They’re not bad… they’re just not that good either. Then I have the T.V. movies made with Thor and Daredevil in a cool 2-pack that comes with a little comic highlighting points from the movies themselves. I also have the original movie – which I got anyways when they started to release the seasons. I will post those later.
