“No! Not the SHOES!” – by Ashley M. Boynes

Here’s the thing: in addition to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Celiac Disease, I suffer from a third disease. This condition is called “Chronic Shoe Lust.” Shoes are my sanctuary. And here’s my frustration: I don’t want to give up my cute shoes, even when my logic — and my doctor — tells me to. While they aren’t Manolos, Louboutins, or Jimmy Choos by any means, my closet is filled with pair after pair of (more affordable!) adorable, uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous-looking shoes. I love them!

Sometimes, it is so hard to be reasonable. It can be especially difficult when you are 26 years old and have a seemingly endless list of rules to follow, what not to do, what not to eat, which medications to take, which supplements are helpful, when the next doctor’s appointment is, and so forth. Add in a pinch of human emotion and a dash of impulsion – and you’re surely bound to slip up here and there.

I have rheumatoid arthritis in ALL of my joints, but my right knee is a particular mess: I have a torn meniscus floating around, both RA and osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, bone spurs and calcium deposits. I’ve lost my full range of motion – my knee doesn’t fully straighten or bend – and it is constantly swollen.  It sometimes physically locks in a 90-degree angle. I have walked with a slight limp since the sixth grade. With no other choice, I’ve gotten used to my not-so-friendly knee and the pain it causes my whole right leg – from hip to ankle.

And this cranky knee? Along with my doctor and family members, it has chastised me time and time again for wearing kitten heels, stilettos, wedges, pointy-toed pumps and other variations of cute and fashionable shoes. These shoes hate me, though. My difficult knee has teamed up with said hip and foot to cause horrendous wear-and-tear to any pair of heels that I slide on to my feet, ruining the shoe by making the heel slanted and bent inward with no hope for repair. This sad display makes me unable to walk in them any further – but yet, as I consider fashion (especially shoes) an art – I do not have the heart to throw them away! That being said, however, I cannot imagine the damage being done to my joint if that is what occurs to each pair of shoes. Hmm…

Now, I AM a logical young woman. I follow my strict gluten-free diet, I take my pills on time, I take my vitamins and rarely miss a doctor’s appointment. I try to take care of myself, and try not to take on more than I can handle.

But I refuse to give up wearing cute shoes. Cute, painful, inconvenient, fabulous shoes!

I’m not sure why this is. I do enjoy the confidence-boost that I get when a stranger compliments me on a particularly stylish pair. It makes me feel good about myself, and I consider shoe-collecting almost a hobby. I know that, given my condition, the “reasonable” and “rational” thing to do is to wear flats, sneakers, or some sort of more “accommodating” shoes. Yet, I wear platform Mary Janes, open-toed kitten pumps, sandals with little-to-no support, and 4-inch stilettos…I just can’t help myself!

I know, I know. I’m “going to kill myself walking in those things.” It’s “no wonder” I limp. “Of course my knee is killing me — look at those shoes!” -  I’ve heard it all. But when I’m traipsing back to the parking garage at the end of the work day, I don’t feel so badly – because I’m joined by countless other women limping along, teetering on the edge of sanity with their sky-high heels. In that moment, I’m not alone.

Could this be why I torture myself with the heels? Maybe a part of me thinks it is easier to hide behind the guise of “it’s just the shoes,” rather than a chronic illness with no end in sight. It’s the blame game — and blaming a physical ail on having fashionable feet is much easier than the reality of the situation. I also think it’s my pride. I want to hold on to any sense of normalcy that I can, since sometimes my life isn’t exactly that of a “normal” 26-year-old. Do I have to give up something that, as silly as it is, makes me happy?

I know that I’m being stubborn, and I’m probably hurting my knee further, but here’s how I justify it: I’ve sacrificed enough. I have given up pizza, beer, “regular” baked goods, my beloved Twizzlers, and, really, any sense of being carefree. I’ve sacrificed sports. I’ve sacrificed nights out with friends. Isn’t it OK to be stubborn just this once?

I know there are far worse things that could happen in life – after all, they’re only shoes. But shoes are something I can control. The other things that bother me about chronic illness are things that I might not be able to change, ever, even if I want to. So forgive me for wanting to hold on to my shoes. After all, I need to be well-heeled while I take the steps to kick these symptoms!

As we promised yesterday, we’re going to present you a special video list today in order to get you into the right “New Moon mood”. A few days ago I was completely obsessed with watching the newest premiere vids and interviews. After seeing all the red carpet stuff and picking all my favorite tv specials, I couldn’t wait for the movie to finally hit theaters. So to give you a good start for another workweek and to keep the crazy New Moon mood up a bit longer, here come the top five New Moon videos to enjoy on an otherwise boring monday (Only half a top ten list this time, cause watching 10 vids would take like what? Two thirds of your workday? Perhaps the whole, because you’d probably watch them all over and over again. Believe me, yes they’re that good!). Without further adieu, enjoy!

1. This one is perfect to refresh your memory of what the whole story is about. Watch as Peter Facinelli and his lovely wife Jenny Garth act out New Moon with the Edward, Jacob and Bella action figures.

After they summed it all up for us again and now that we’re really down with the plot again, it’s time for the next video!

2. The Twilight Trinity aka Rob, Kristin and Taylor at the Jimmy Kimmel show. Hear them talk about the vampire chippendales and Rob’s ass injury and see as Taylor Lautner gets way embarrassed when they show one of his childhood martial arts vids.

Have you noticed Kristen Stewarts red soles? Louboutins again. Damn, this girl’s got an awesome high-heel collection! But let’s not linger on that before I grow too depressed… Off to the next video!

3. Chris Weitz, new DILF in town on the LA New Moon premiere. In case you don’t remember the orange pants he wore in London, click here to enjoy them (again) before watching the video! Honestly, you need this to get all the funny stuff!

4. The Jay Leno New Moon parody called “Newer Moon” combined with amazing red carpet journalism. This includes the vampires attorney, some shirtless scenes and an invitation to the wolfpack-party. Don’t miss it!

5. Carrie Keagan does it again, New Moon uncensored, my absolute favorite. They did it with Twilight last year and that was definitely my favorite interview ever since I discovered it. Attention, don’t watch this in front of your mother, grandma or children! Lots of expletives but also more laughs than in any other vid you will find. Carrie Keagan discusses the WILFs and VILFs (new technical term!), upper body nudity, the Taylor Lautner nude scene and the DVD extras (SPOILER: shirtless and jortless wolfpack). Enjoy!

The wolfpack when they get the meaning of WILF, Rob accidently revealing that there’s a nude scene, Kristen talking about objectifying the guys, Elizabeth Reaser aka Esme eager to see them with their jorts off, Chris Weitz totally getting the WILF stuff and laughing his ass off… priceless!

It’s no secret that Arabs love logos. Nothing instantly pushes you up the social-class ladder than graphically branding yourself with the latest symbol of chicness. The right logo expresses confidence, plays into our competitive nature, and feeds off the insistent desire to impress others. FYI, not just any brand will do; we are not talking about the over-exposed Coach or Juicy Couture (even Burberry was described to me by an Arab socialite as “the poor man’s luxury label”).  Today, the nouveaux riches are aiming higher than ever to find brands that transcend the popular and mark them as unique yet still part of the high-class elite. In trendy restaurants from New York to London to Dubai, you can observe this phenomenon on the Arab ladies who lunch. They sit and casually gossip with limited-edition Hermes Birkins strategically perched on the table and Louboutin red-soled platforms peeping from underneath. Forget therapy, wrapping an Arab woman head-to-toe in interlacing Cs, Gs, LVs or patterned Fs will resolve any self-esteem issues.

This obsession with labels is shifting from the lady of the house to her husband and kids. The sight of middle-aged Arab men wearing Prada ankle boots and flashy Gucci belts has become common. For the Arab male, the visibilty of the logo is of extreme importance. He will not choose these Prada’s, but these. He knows that investing in a high-quality item from an obscure designer, or worse a well-known designer with no logo, is idiotic. Even Arab newborns have been dipped in Burberry plaid from bottle to stroller to diaper covers. What better way to show your love? That is only until they are old enough (12 months) to wear Rock & Republic jeans.

What to do if you are an Arab recessionista? Please don’t resort to buying fakes because that is sooo wrong and your Lebanese friends will out your sad imitation faster than you can say kharrat/liar. Luckily you can go here or here to rent the latest handbags, jewelry, or dresses hot off the runway. So that YSL Roady that you have been eyeing forlikever can be yours in 3-5 business days. It’s like Netflix for your closet. Enjoy and you’re welcome.

I have always wondered how in the hell Carrie Bradshaw could afford to live in a (relatively) huge one-bedroom in NYC, eat out so frequently that she literally had no food in her house, and still spend every cent of her money on couture.   I guess that lifestyle is one of the perks of being a fictional character?  Sadly…um?…I’m of the non-fiction persuasion, and so I have to actually save my money, if for no other reason than that is usually what real people do.  On top of which, there is just no way I’m spending 3-4 digits on shoes  (full disclosure: I can’t be persuaded to spend $200 on jeans, which I’d wear every day, let alone some freakishly painful, though oh-so-fab shoes).  And so imagine my joy when I saw these:

I thought, really, is this really true? Can they really be mine? It almost feels like stealing. I guess, if you’re buying knock-offs, it is stealing. I download free music off the internet, would it really be a shame to own fake Louboutins if no one could tell the difference?

Should I go for the more expensive option cuz you would think it would be a better fake, or should I go for the cheap option? They steal the pictures from the internet, but who knows what you’re going to get when you open the box? It could be too good to be true, but I mean, they better be a pretty good pair of shoes for 3-400 either way.

The main difference I saw, was that the first site says it comes with the box, and shoes bags. If you really wanted to pull them off as real, you’d need to have the evidence.

Should I go for a cheaper pair to test out how good their fakes are, or maybe a pair I’d wear more often?

Happy graduation to me! This is my big day and I would love to share this piece of joyous news with everyone who is reading my blog (and yes, this is probably the only non-faceless entry)! I’ve been waiting for this day to arrive forever and finally it has! I can’t tell you enough how grateful, happy and blessed I am to be able to complete this important phase of my life. Now the next big step is a pretty obvious one, but I’m not so sure if I’m cut out to work full force yet. I feel that working isn’t really my calling at this moment. It’s gonna take a while to discern but I really want to discern and decide carefully before taking any plunge. It’s really crucial to make a prudent decision and I don’t want factors such as the lack of time, money, job status and such to affect the outcome of my decision… so we shall see.

PS: Thank you all for your very very sweet and lovely comments! Grandpa has started treatment today and let’s continue to hope and pray he’ll remain strong and be okay!

Come già segnalato in precedenza da una paio di post, la Barbie e tutto ciò che rappresenta è sempre sulla cresta dell’onda. Ora più che mai a causa dei problemi mondiali di alimentazione.

CHIEDETELE come vanno le cose con Ken magari, ma non azzardatevi a fare il nome di Christian Louboutin in casa Barbie. La signora delle bambole, a cinquant’anni suonati, potrebbe perdere il bel sorriso e l’aplomb impeccabile e rifilarvi una stilettata sugli stinchi. Se la celebre creatura della Mattel potesse parlare e muoversi sarebbe questa forse la reazione alla polemica che l’ha vista protagonista in questi giorni. Da una parte lei, la bambola per eccellenza, dall’altra lui, il maestro francese della calzatura entrato nell’olimpo delle shoesaholic grazie alle sue scarpe dalle suole rosse fiammanti, che in occasione del mezzo secolo della bambola è stato chiamato, insieme ad altri 49 stilisti, a creare un look celebrativo. Ebbene per il designer parigino Barbie sarebbe inadatta a indossare calzature Louboutin. La ragione? Caviglie troppo grosse.

Così la Mattel corre ai ripari in fretta e furia. E ridisegna le caviglie fino all’eccesso. Negli Stati Uniti la questione ha sollevato un polverone. Ma come? Non bastavano le polemiche sul mondo della moda, accusato di fomentare un modello di donna eccessivamente skinny, magra, attraverso la scelta di indossatrici quasi anoressiche e con abiti taglia 40 (o anche meno)? Ora ci si mette anche lo stilista francese e, come se non fosse già abbastanza magra, a Barbie è toccato rivedere la forma.

Dalla Francia però invitano a smorzare i toni e i portavoce di Louboutin ci tengono a precisare che le accuse di Christian non erano rivolte alla caviglia ma al collo del piede, troppo “grosso”. I tre modelli di scarpette rosa, décolleté contraddistinte dalla famosa suola rossa, sono comunque già pronte e Barbie le indosserà, sfoggiando la sua caviglia ritoccata, a partire dal prossimo maggio nella versione completamente vestita da Louboutin inscatolata in preziosi cofanetti in edizione limitata.

Alle donne americane la storia però non è affatto piaciuta e se da una parte si elogiano le caviglie alla Hillary Clinton, poco slanciate forse ma forti abbastanza da sostenere il successo del segretario di Stato, dall’altra il Daily News riflette sulle percentuali che differenziano le donne d’oltralpe da quelle statunitensi: un 9% di sovrappeso contro un pesante 60%.

Ad aggravare la questione ci aveva pensato qualche giorno fa anche Karl Lagerfeld, altro guru delle fashion victim e per giunta sempre portavoce della moda francese – sua infatti la firma sulle collezioni Chanel. Secondo lo stilista, “nessuno vuole vedere donne con le curve. Solo le mamme grasse che mangiano patatine davanti alla televisione dicono che le modelle magre sono brutte”. La dichiarazione era arrivata come commento alla scelta della rivista femminile tedesca Brigitte di rinunciare alle modelle professioniste a favore di donne comuni.

E che il problema della fisicità delle modelle, utilizzate dai grandi stilisti per promuovere su passerelle e riviste le loro creazioni, fosse andato veramente oltre lo conferma anche lo scandalo che ha visto protagonista Ralph Lauren. Finito sul banco di accusa del popolare blog Boing Boing per avere ritoccato digitalmente l’immagine della modella Filippa Hamilton (licenziata solo una settimana dopo perché ritenuta troppo grassa) riducendole punto vita, gambe e fianchi tanto da farla apparire quasi disumana, prima era arrivata la diffida alla pubblicazione della foto, e subito dopo, l’ammissione da parte della casa di moda americana: “Per 42 anni abbiamo costruito un marchio basato sulla qualità e sull’integrità ma dopo alcune indagini abbiamo scoperto di essere responsabili per la diffusione di una foto ritoccata che propone un modello distorto del corpo femminile”.

Ma proprio come insegnano le avventure di Barbie, nel suo meraviglioso mondo tutto rosa c’è sempre un lieto fine. E stavolta c’è anche in questa polemica. L’happy end porta il nome di sette modelle: sono Crystal Renn (la modella oversize più pagata d’America), Kate Dillon (la 35enne tutta curve), Ashley Graham, Amy Lemons, Anasa Sims, Jenny Runk e Lizzie Miller, la 20enne americana salita all’onore della cronaca per avere posato nuda e con una visibile pancetta in mostra. Sono loro le protagoniste del numero di novembre di Glamour America e posano nude, formose e felici, nel paginone centrale. Sotto il titolo: “Oh, wow. Questi corpi sono belli”.

Agent Provocateur x Christian Louboutin = WIN!!!

Hmmmmm… No one will surely mess with you when you are wearing these. I can just imagine the damage one kick would do.

One word for these ‘Awful’, Ive not seen anyone wearing them as yet, if you have give me a heads up id like to see what they look like on. I personally think wearing these would make you like you’ve been shot a 100 times in the foot and the bullets are clinging on for dear life.

I’m not a big fan of Mary Jane shoes, I can honestly say I dont actually own a pair. I came across these today whilst having a browse and fell in love with them. Ive always associated Mary Jane’s with the colour ‘Black’ for some reason, every time they are mentioned I think boring black shoes with a heel and strap that goes across your foot!! blah!!

But these are totally fabulous. I love the Cherry Burgundy colour to them, the shape is fab and heel is a nice slender stiletto. These have surely changed my mind about Mary Jane shoes. Go Louboutin!!!! wooohoooooo
