After a first glance, I couldn’t really decide where these stand. Part of Louis Vuitton’s Winter 2009 collection, I first saw these when pictures surfaced from Paris Fashion Week. Between the beads, the bow, and the sparkles I didn’t really know how I felt about these. Makes me wonder whether there’s more or less stability because of the heel. If paired with the right outfit, I think the cancan pump can really complete it, and add extra “oomph”. But, if paired with the wrong thing I think these can come off tacky. What do you think?

David

“Dormir o dia inteiro. Zoar a noite toda. Nunca crescer. Nunca morrer.

O Vampiro do Brooklyn

It is pretty bad. Last night Jedward, the scary Irish duo left. Louis Walsh’s ‘little popstars’ weren’t destined to win. Louis also helped to vote out Jamie Archer the week before by saying Lloyd had the most potential. Then in last nights episode he said Lloyd was the weakest of all the singers. Just shows you.

Dannii also posed the question: ‘is this a singing contest?’ before voting for Olly to stay. Simon pretended he didn’t hear her even though she said it three times. Cheryl remained silent also not wanting to rock things with King Simon. Louis had his usual minus expression, seemingly in awe of the twins.

Louis later commented that it was so wonderful to work with ‘young people’ and it made him feel young again – a comment that must have had most 16 year-olds in the country simultaneously throwing up their dinners. Jedward it seems representing the teenaged population of the country so accurately.
So now after Olly was nearly knocked out all bets are off. I hope Stacey does well. She is a natural talent with emphasis on natural. This puts her apart from Danyl who is a talent without any of the sincerity (or charm of Stacey, of course). Having to hear his nasal voice again and his giant mouth opening up to swallow the four judges and half the audience too is something I will have to bear another week.

He knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts, wrote the finest of all jazz autobiographies–without a collaborator–and created collages that have been compared to the art of Romare Bearden. The ranks of his admirers included Johnny Cash, Jackson Pollock and Orson Welles. Offstage he was witty, introspective and unexpectedly complex, a beloved colleague with an explosive temper whose larger-than-life personality was tougher and more sharp-edged than his worshipping fans ever knew.
Wall Street Journal arts columnist Terry Teachout has drawn on a cache of important new sources unavailable to previous Armstrong biographers, including hundreds of private recordings of backstage and after-hours conversations that Armstrong made throughout the second half of his life, to craft a sweeping new narrative biography of this towering figure that shares full, accurate versions of such storied events as Armstrong’s decision to break up his big band and his quarrel with President Eisenhower for the first time. Certain to be the definitive word on Armstrong for our generation, Pops paints a gripping portrait of the man, his world and his music that will stand alongside Gary Giddins’ Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams and Peter Guralnick’s Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley as a classic biography of a major American musician.

  Dear Amazon Readers:

Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong, my new book, is the story of a great artist who was also a good man.

A genius who was born in the gutter–and became a celebrity known in every corner of the world.

A beloved entertainer who was more complex–and much tougher–than his fans ever imagined.

It’s not the first Armstrong biography, but it’s the first one to tell Satchmo’s story accurately. I based it in part on hundreds of private, after-hours recordings made by Armstrong himself, candid tapes in which he tells the amazing tale of his ascent to stardom in blunt, plainspoken language. I’m the first biographer to have had access to those tapes.

Read Pops and you’ll learn the facts about his 1930 marijuana arrest, his life-threatening run-in with the gangsters of Chicago, his triumphant Broadway and Hollywood debuts, his complicated love life, and much, much more.

You’ll also come away understanding exactly what it was that made him the most influential jazz musician of the twentieth century, an entertainer so irresistibly magnetic that he knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts four decades after he cut his first record.

If you’ve ever thrilled to the sounds of “West End Blues,” “Mack the Knife,” “Hello, Dolly!” or “What a Wonderful World,” this is the book for you and yours. Give Pops a read and find out all about the man from New Orleans who changed the face of American music.

    Sincerely yours,

  Terry Teachout

Amazon Exclusive: Terry Teachout’s Top 10 Louis Armstrong Recordings

In Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong, I tell the story of a beloved giant of jazz whose greathearted, larger-than-life personality shone through every record he made. Here are ten of my special favorites:

    1. “I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues” (1933). Of all Louis Armstrong’s records, this is the one I love best. Listen to how he floats atop the beat in the last chorus–he sounds just like a tenor going for a high C.

    2. “West End Blues” (1928). The most celebrated of all Armstrong recordings and the quintessence of swing.”

    3. “Hotter Than That” (1927). “I just played the way I sang,” Pops said. His wordless vocal on this Hot Seven track proves it.

    4. “Star Dust” (1931). Further proof: listen to how he rewrites the lyrics to this familiar Hoagy Carmichael ballad.

    5. “Darling Nelly Gray” (1937). Satchmo transforms an old slave song, backed up by the suavely swinging Mills Brothers.

    6. “Jeepers Creepers” (1939). A charming souvenir of Armstrong’s film career–he introduced this Johnny Mercer song in “Going Places.”

    7. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” (1938). A boiling-hot big-band remake of a classic 1927 Hot Five side in which the trumpeter improves on perfection.

    8. “You Rascal, You” (1950). Louis meets Louis in this raucous romp through an Armstrong standard, accompanied to high-spirited effect by Louis Jordan’s Tympany Five.

    9. “New Orleans Function” (1950). An old-time New Orleans jazz funeral recreated by the All Stars, with Earl Hines on piano and Jack Teagarden on trombone.

    10. “Sleepy Time Down South” (1941). Armstrong’s theme song, an irreplaceable example of his rich and resplendent lyricism.

“A fine book about a great artist and a fine man” 2009-11-21
By Peter G. Keen (virginia usa)
This is an excellent book; it’s hard to see that it could be improved on within its bounded aims. The only caveat I offer is that it is a biography of a professional and artist at work and not a probe of the inner man. It is about music and the musician. That does limit its interest to someone like myself, who has limited knowledge of jazz and doesn’t resonate to the well-presented musical assessments that give the book much of its originality and focus. It’s not a book just for the specialist but equally it’s not one for a reader looking to bring the personality to life. I’d contrast it with, say, Julia Blackburn’s jigsaw puzzle bio of Billie Holiday, assembled out of another researcher’s collection of interviews with people who were part of her life. It’s a much lesser book and you’ll learn little about the artistry but plenty about this complex woman. So, a key in deciding whether to buy this book is to be clear about what you can expect and what you want to get from it.

What you will get is a warm and empathic, low key presentation of someone who is very different from the huge smile, Hello Dolly, has-been performer he got stereotyped as later in his career. This was a superb musician, of great originality and impact. He also seems to have been a genuinely good man, not a plaster saint but a decent and honorable person who had his foibles – never forgetting a grudge – and was ordinary rather than heroic in many aspects of being a great black artist in a world of white control. He knew he was a consummate showman and played up to that image and opportunity. He was admired by his peers as without equal not just in technical performance but in setting new levels of what could be achieved with the trumpet.

The book is well-written in a lucid expository style. It’s light on adjectives and doesn’t try to be vivid. One of its strengths is effective use of quotes from Armstrong and people who worked with him. It’s not likely to hit the best-seller list and it’s not a must-have book. I have no interest in the topic and picked it from the Vine list of books for review out of curiosity about the social history of jazz. I am so glad I read it, though. It gave me a very fresh perspective on Armstrong, jazz, the quiet struggles of black artists, and the evolution of music from the joints of New Orleans to the takeover of TV.

“A great book if you are interested!” 2009-11-20
By Marty Gillis (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This book was both very entertaining and very informative. It is an easy to read fast moving chronicle of the life and times of one of music’s most influential musicians and a true legend. I would say that you will really enjoy this book if you are a fan as there is much minutia of interest. Louis was not only a great musician, singer and band leader but a very astute businessman as well. His family history and personal life is at times eye opening and most always interesting.

This book has been passed around our family and all of us have truly enjoyed it. We are all music fans and over 50 in this household so this book was right up our alley. POPS is a good read for fans and may hold some interest for the curious as well.

I personally gained a new appreciation of Mr. Armstrong after reading this.

“Rather lackluster revisit of the Louis Armstrong legend” 2009-11-20
By Luigi Facotti (Chicago Il)
While adequate, this new biography of Louis Armstrong adds little to the existing literature on this icon of jazz and entertainment. It fails to provide a good historical context for Mr. Armstrong’s life and at times one comes away with the distinct feeling that Mr. Teachout has no empathy for either his subject or his music. He seems to take greater delight in debunking the intellectual perspective of the critics of Mr. Armstrong’s “sell out” in moving from the Hot Five and Hot Seven to the big bands than involving the reader in the legand and his music. This adds very little to Mr. Armstrong’s autobiography.

“The biography Pops deserves!” 2009-11-18
By kevnm (Costa Mesa, CA United States)
Louis Armstrong’s music and personality made him one of the most important and interesting cultural figures of the Twentieth Century. Known around the world as a jazz musician, an actor, a showman, even a memoirist, reactions to his life have revealed cultural shifts, changing values and critical trends for decades. Some see an avant-garde musical genius, others an old-show biz trouper embodying nineteenth century entertainment conventions. Some see him as a pioneer for African American pride, others an Uncle Tom.

His long, complex life and society’s complex reactions to it are sensitively traced in Teachout’s wonderful biography. The great stories of New Orleans and early years in Chicago and New York are fun and full of the tasty anecdotes that make Armstrong come alive in these pages. At the same time, his musical evolution is evoked through contemporaneous reviews and accounts of those who saw his most electrifying performances. All the while, the author traces the history of society’s reaction to Armstrong, his music, his recordings and his persona.

The book is admirably serious for a popular biography, but even more important, it’s always fun! Armstrong was a true character and his personality shines through the stories and memories here. That may be the book’s greatest value – communicating the humor, the passion, the musical range and the sense of fun this great man brought to audiences for over fifty years.

This is a great, highly recommended book that’s sure to increase your appreciation of Armstrong and to send you back to his music with a fresh ear.

First off, a Thanksgiving news alert: I don’t plan to post on Thursday, November 26 or Friday

First off, a Thanksgiving news alert: I don’t plan to post on Thursday, November 26 or Friday, November 27. I’m headed off to visit my in-laws in Detroit, and they have these crazy ideas about people sitting in the same room and enjoying each others’ company. :)

It’s been a quiet week as the US readies for the holiday.

Well, not entirely quiet. The second Twilight flick, New Moon, premiered. Names spotted among those turning out for the festivities included designer Rachel Roy brought her 10 year old daughter Ava. Rachel and husband Damon Dash also have a toddler called Tallulah Ruth. (via Celebrity Baby Blog) It’s interesting to see parents who embraced Ava ten years ago, when she was still on the rise, using Tallulah more recently. Anyone else think that the once-outlandish name that had everyone abuzz when the Moore-Willis clan used it will go mainstream? And if a search for “baby names Twilight” brought you here, check out this post: Not Just for Vampires Anymore.

In other celeb news, Tiffani Thiessen tells Extra that she and her husband aren’t considering “any freaky names.” She doesn’t mention whether going through life as Tiffani-Amber colored her view. We’ll have to wait and see.

On to some real life name-spotting:

I just returned from Target.  I was buying toddler tights while another mom was trying to persuade her daughter to try on a coat, but the daughter?  Was fleeing to the just-steps-away toy department.  The name the mother was calling?  ”Miracle!  Miracle, come back here!”  Insert your own joke about it-taking-an-act-of-God to distract a 3 y.o. from the toy department here;

Bewildertrix has spotted Leonidas George. My baby brother swears Leonidas will be the name of his firstborn son, should that happy event ever come to pass. She also uncovered an Elisabetta Ivy. And a Zuma. (No Gwen Stefani isn’t in New Zealand – he’s Zuma Louis, a non-celeb baby brother for Ava and Remi.)

For Real Baby Names spotted Dafne. It may be a valid foreign variant, but to me it is like Jorja/Georgia - this one just looks better as the more familiar Daphne.

Now for two Language Lessons from that sage font of wisdom, Nancy:

Hard G vs. Soft G – Sometimes they’re interchangeable – as in Jorja/Georgia – but other times, swapping a J for a G leads to confusion;

Doubling consonants – Ditto doubling a consonant. It’s another popular way to make a name “unique,” but it can also cause confusion.

Truly unusual names are always found at Nameberry, and this week’s posts were no exception. Check out the Lost Boys’ Names of 1880. Why aren’t more boys named Zeb? Or Hardy? Others – including titles like Squire and Commodore – are best left to history. (I work with a man in his 50s named General. I don’t get the impression that he thinks much about his name one way or the other.) For a change, the girls’ list is almost less interesting – maybe because I wouldn’t raise an eyebrow if I met a 2 y.o. called Mahala or Texas.

Let’s end on a controversial note: the shortcomings of the Baby Name Wizard. I recently noticed a post on Swistle (a big BNW adherent) that troubled me. Just a few days earlier, Nancy recounted a similar story on her blog.

An expectant mother, mom to Sophia, wrote to Swistle about the name Allegra. She and her husband loved the name Allegra. Loved the way nicknames Allie and Sophie sounded together. But she worried about the allergy medication association.

Swistle wrote: “I love the name Allegra—and every time I want to suggest it, I back away because of the allergy medicine. I’m ANGRY at the company that stole it.”

Swistle’s poll was evenly split: 52% no to Allegra; 48% yes. But here’s the thing: Swistle’s framing of the question – “Is the name Allegra too associated with allergy medication to be used for a baby?” made it pretty clear that she thought Allegra was beyond consideration. (Swistle is usually so judgment-free that I was really surprised by that.)

The mom herself recently wrote in:

“We ended up naming our daughter Lucy. I love her name, but I regret not being gutsy enough to go with Allegra. Personally, I’d encourage anyone considering the name to go for it. No matter what name you choose some people will like it and others will hate it.”

Lucy is a fine name. I like it lots. But how sad that much naming advice often tends to push parents to the middle, rather than embracing the names that we really love.

I suspect the allergy medication reference is fleeting. When the blogger at For Real Baby Names spotted a Dexy Adelaide, I mentioned the 80s pop hit “Come On, Eileen” – and sent ForReal running to Google. Dexy, it appears, no longer means “one-hit wonder responsible for lodging the phrase too-rye-aye in my brain.” And it hasn’t been that long. It makes me think Allegra will be free of medication association by the time Allie hits the teenage years, if not sooner.

Thanks for reading!

Louis CK apparently finds distaste in stuffed animals.

The Setting: Merriam Theater, Philadelphia, PA.

The Situation: My friends and I have just finished enjoying a hilarious night of stand-up by Louis CK. If you don’t know him, Louis is the kind of comic whose jokes will make your grandmother not only faint, but spontaneously combust, and then after that her ashes will explode. He has been quoted as saying that the Catholic Church exists “solely for the purpose of boy rape.” He also once said, “I don’t have a gun, but if I did, I would shoot a baby deer in the mouth and feel nothing.”

Awesome, right?

And that’s just skimming the surface. I admire Louis quite a bit for having the balls to say crazy shit that could enrage countless people. I wanted him to know how awesome I think he is, and he was in the lobby signing autographs, so I waited for my turn to meet him. Finally, it was my turn.

What went down:

Me: Hi! Great show! I really love your work. Could you sign my ticket for me?

Louis: Sure.

Me: (as he is signing my ticket) You know, some people would say you’re a terrible person, but I think you’re awesome!

Immediately, I sensed this had come out wrong. Louis’ face scrunched up a little bit. Did I just…offend the king of offensiveness? ”Please don’t take it the wrong way! I just mangled my words, I didn’t mean it like that!” I thought.

Louis: Well, uh…they’re entitled to their own opinion. (He hands my ticket back to me)

Fuck. He took it the wrong way.

Louis: Next in line, please!

Sweet. I just unintentionally insulted my comedy hero. Luckily, I had time to time a quick photo with him, but currently, I am unable to find it. So sad.

Thanksgiving must be in the air, because this month of November has been a cornucopia of riches for those of you out there, unlike myself, that enjoy watching leaked sex tapes of famous or soon to be famous people.

Virginal Miss California, and a proud homophobe Carrie Prejean has made at least 8 solo sex tapes, that were for her former boyfriends eyes only, has been offered up to two million dollars by the porno production kings Vivid entertainment.

Shauna Sands of all people has written an open letter to Carrie, encouraging her to take the money, and maximize her financial earnings by controlling its distribution, which will happen if she gets paid or not.

Shauna, of course, is speaking from experience, as her former boyfriend released her sex tape, on the eve of ex-husband Lorenzo Lamas and current family had premiered their own reality T.V. program on a major cable network. Shauna has offered to sit down with her over ‘tea’ so she could consult her one on one, sex tape producer to sex tape producer.

Let’s see what Carrie decides to do…take the devils money, or cash in and blaze new trials as a christian porno actress. Today, singing star, actress, and all around sex goddess, Carmen Electra stepped up to the plate and has leaked her own private porno sex tape, but hers is not a solo affair.

I give it 8 out of 10 stars, because of its tameness.

What it does mean is that the search for it will on the internet will make her the queen of internet searches for a few days, which should help promote the sale of her upcoming movie or book release. Electra, 37, can be seen wearing nothing but black high heels, stockings, panties, a red bra and a diamond-studded choker in a new short posted on website NucleonForce.com.

Just note that even though it is tame,it is not safe for work,NFSW, so proceed at your own risk, but do check it out if you want to confirm my review. You may need to hurry, because, just to make it look good, like an actual leak, I am sure that her ‘people’ and attorneys will take it down quickly, after getting the necessary decease and desist orders, but…they all know that it is still retrievable by those in the know.

Once it’s up, it is almost impossible to totally delete from the massive internet sites that have most certainly copied it in several places on the web.

The most interesting one out of any leaked sex tape that I have been forced to review as a ‘journalist’ comes from newcomers Miss Japan 2008 Miroko Mima and Miss Trinidad & Tobago Anya Ayoung-Chee who both met and competed in the 2008 Miss Universe pageant with Carrie Prejean.

This one features adults involved in unspeakable acts of passion and intamacy-all in a three-way with a gentleman rumored to be Miss Trinidad and Tobago’s former boyfriend. How he messed that relationship up, is amazing to me, because these two beauties seem like the coolest duo on the planet.

I can not even begin to explain the situation in words, so I will link this article to the fellow blogger who has it posted on their site. Be warned…this is totally XXX rated and thoroughly NSFW, so wait until you get home.

Do not be too curious, because why mess up a good gig over some prurient entertainment, unless of course, your job is to report on such news for a blog or other legitimate news reporting services.

http://fleshbot.com/5405254/alleged-beauty-queen-threeway-tape-rocks-the-internet/gallery

I predict the two of them will be famous, but that Miss Trinidad and Tobago is flat-out beautiful. She will have an extensive career in front of the cameras, so do not be mad at her.

I give this one 15 stars out of 10, and the leaked tape speaks for itself.

It is being reported that the action was stolen off of her Miss Trinidad’s former boyfriend’s laptop, when he left it at a computer repair shop. That sounds to me like a lie, because we all know that most people delete their porn from their desktop before leaving it at a repair shop,….at least I do.

I am obviously joking here with all of this, but it is amazing to me that there are so many high-profile people out there that film themselves having illicit sex. Carrie Prejean claims that she just wanted to give her boyfriend a gift, and I have heard that before many times from young girls.

I know when I bring gifts to an intimate female companion, I better show up with some flowers and merchandise if I plan on coming back. A sex tape will not cut it for the women I know, …but it would be great for them to make one and give it to me.

I just would not be in it. Unfortunetly this does send out the wrong message to all the little girls out there that want to become celebrities. It seems as though that a ‘leaked’ sex tape is going to be mandatory for young lady to rise to fame and popularity in today’s culture.

The viral nature of just such an exhibition has worked wonders for many of todays starlets and that might be a double-edged sword.

I expect a lot of self righteous declarations of piousness to be espoused in reaction to this sexual exploitation in our culture, and I discourage any of my relatives to go down this path,so I do not have to be exposed to it.

But, the reality of it is, is that it is not illegal if the parties are of age and consenting adults, it’s just inadvisable.

I recommend a bit of discretion, but I do understand the pressure that we in Hollywood put on the female stars to stay relevant, and to be noticed.

If you are related to me, I suggest you make something eles for your boyfriend…

Proceed with caution….as I call to book my one way ticket to Trinidad and Tobago with a layover in Japan!!!
