Happy hour…the place where you can kick back and enjoy a beer from one of Austin Brew’s  selections, or a simple cocktail.

As an early pre-party Thanksgiving celebration, a few of my friends and I went downtown to  McCormick & Schmick’s  for their late night happy hour. Their usual happy hour last until 7pm, but their second happy hour is from 9-10 pm.  This works out great for my schedule, since I’m a busy college student who  works and goes to school.

 McCormick & Schmick’s  offer great seafood dinner plates that cost about $20 during normal business hours. The place would be ideal for a nice romantic date. During happy hour, a few selected items cost $1.95-$4.95.

I really enjoyed McCormicks, it’s affordable and good. Appetizers during happy hour are cheap. I was really hungry so I got calamari, buffalo quesadillas, and a Sangria. I’m usually a margarita type of girl but since they don’t offer frozen margaritas, I’d thought it would be nice to try a new cocktail.

Graduating UT senior Fnan Gelai said she would go back to McCormick & Schmicks. “I really like it a lot it’s a really good happy hour for college students. I think it’s very reasonable and the food was good…but they need to have frozen margaritas,”said Gelai.

Overall, the night ended great. We are all so busy that it was great to meet up and unwind for girls night out.

To be completely honest there are some things in life that I crave, absolutely need to have and comfort is one of those things especially at home.  I am the first to sacrifice comfort when it comes to a fabulous pair of heels, but when I am in my home I need comfort!  The Hubs and I are determined to create a comfortable and restorative space for our study.  We purchased the Lounge Sofa from Crate & Barrel which is arguably the most comfortable sofa ever – super deep with soft micro velvet fabric and down cushions.  In love!

The cold nights are fast approaching, being cozy and warm under a thick wool cable knit throw blanket is my idea of comfort this winter.  With that said, now I need to find the perfect one.  Pottery Barn has a cable knit throw for $79 and unfortunately it is a cotton acrylic blend.  I hate hate hate synthetic materials like acrylic and polyester.

“STRESS FREE FRIDAYS AT KATRA LOUNGE”

      We landed in NYC on Friday 20 November to a city full of eager socialites ready to paint the town red! Thankfully, once we arrived at the hotel our schedules were free for the night so we really wanted to unwind. After calling around to our extremely helpful twitterbabes we decided on Katra Lounge http://www.katranyc.com/ Friday is the night for busy business women and men to relax and talk about all of the great things they have accomplished during the hectic week. Upon arrival we were met with a great bouncer who was very courteous (yes. really). The place was smaller than we anticipated but lined with beautiful sofas and the ambience was very cozy and chic. It had 2 levels and the DJ was rockin to R&B, POP, and some HIPHOP. The only thing was the size of the venue. I get that it is a lounge and meant for “loungin” but it was super packed and hard to move from one place to another. You could buy a table, but it may take you an hour to get to the restroom if needed. The drinks were ok and the prices were reasonable. Would I go again? Probably. I would visit on a week night instead of on the busy weekend for sure!

It’s been a busy two weeks. Two shows have been transmitted. So, what happened during these two shows? Well I’ll tell you.

FRIDAY 13/11/2009

Friday the 13th. The day associated with everything crashing around you. Strangely, for the Friday Night Lounge, that wasn’t the case.

The show went well. Although, I did notice that the mp3 CD problem wasn’t to do with the CD decks. It was the CDs themselves. The discs were brand spanking new, so I’m assuming it was something to do with the burning settings.

Anyway, inbetween playing music from the Kaiser Chiefs, Happy Mondays, Abba and Donna Lewis, we talked about: Didier Drogba’s generous donation towards an Ivory Coast hospital; a robber sending his own mugshot to the police; why 30,000 people in UK still watch television in black and white; and a proposed 93 page guide for police officers telling them how to ride a bicycle.

Of course, along with that, we had the usual Trivia’s Cocktail. This week it was about Formula One, the connection between the FISA-FOCA war of the 1980s and the FIA-FOTA row, was they both threatened breakaway championships.

Plus, That’s From this week was an easy one. Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey from, you’ve guessed it, Goldfinger – the third Bond film staring Sean Connery.

That was last week’s edition. What I didn’t know was that the next week would be a bumpy ride.

FRIDAY 20/11/2009

Waking up to only 5 hours of sleep; being soaked while waiting for a bus; stuck in a jammed supermarket car park; along with a bad week in general, I wasn’t wanting anything else to go wrong.

Arrived at the studio around at 6:45pm. Began to set everything up. After that, and a few phone calls to friends about other affairs to kill the time later, I was all ready to go. The great thing about being in the studio with an hour or so to showtime, is that you get to relax and ponder on things. When you’ve done everything you needed to that is.

And with Children In Need being on BBC 1, I was expecting a lower listener reach. I mean, who would rather listen to some nutter playing music and then chatting inbetween like a madman, when one of the biggest broadcasts on the British TV calendar is on? So, less pressure on me then. Providing it goes to plan.

9:03, Smooth Radio completes it’s hourly news bulletin. Fade out. Cue a Slow Radio West Fife jingle. Fade up the mic. “It’s Friday 20th of November. And this is the show you only listen to because the Television is broken…” I said, introducing the show before starting the theme tune. Then I did the standard procedure of outlining what was coming up on the show. Then fade out to Genie In A Bottle by Christina Aguilera.

What happened next was another example of me having a bad day. As Genie In A Bottle was about to fade out, I was about to fade up my microphone to begin discussing Children In Need. When I realised something…

On the mixing desk, at the very top, are two rows of buttons. The first row were PGM buttons. When on, whatever gets said or played, is transmitted to the listener’s headsets across the hospital. The second row were AUD buttons. These mean “audition” and when they are on, whatever gets said or played can be heard in the studio.

The PGM button on the presenter’s mic was off. It was off since I went on air.

So what the listeners heard, instead of me self-deprecating and introducing the programme, was: 30 seconds of silence and a theme tune faded up and down slightly at various points.

I normally leave it off before I go on air, so then anything unbroadcastable (like a private conversation with friends or swearing at faulty equipment) doesn’t get transmitted if I accidentally nudge the mic’s fader up.

I thought I pressed it. But in my blind panic, I obviously didn’t press the PGM button hard enough. A schoolboy error, frankly. So after Genie In A Bottle, and pressing the PGM button, I had to make the quickest introduction ever.

Apart from that, the first hour was uneventful. For once, the show was running bang on time. Unlike three to four minutes fast it usually is. Throughout the show we talked about how you can get your name translated into other languages, and find out what they mean. Along with, Crocodile Fossils and where to get a tuxedo for only £30.

“Tempomat” (the German word for cruise control) is the name of the long expected second production of MOCA. 12 tracks settled somewhere between Downbeat, NuJazz, Electro and Pop beyond all cliche, but always groovy and danceable. For the first time MOCA enriches its audio cosmos on three selected titles with the voice of the Australian singer Ingrid Campbell. The five guys from the Ruhr (Germany). These guys play unpretentious but forcefully – electronic music, somewhere between house and lounge, jazz and BigBeat. That The result is funky, it grooves, but above all it is: a tremendously relaxed.

A McDonald’s in downtown Manhattan became the first in the U.S. this fall to undergo a sleek, European-style makeover similar to what McDonald’s has done at thousands of outlets around in France and the United Kingdom.

The eatery is outfitted with outlets for plugging in laptops, upholstered vinyl chairs instead of Fiberglas seats bolted to the floor, subdued lighting and employees whose all-black uniforms suggest a hip boutique.

Franchise owner Paul Hendel said customers have settled down in a restaurant not known for patrons lingering over lunch.

“We’re becoming a more relevant type of restaurant for the younger crowd,” he said. “They don’t feel rushed. They’re reading the newspaper, relaxed.”

McDonald’s Corp. spokeswoman Danya Proud said that while thousands of the chain’s 14,000 restaurants have been updated over the last few years, the Chelsea location is the first “urban redesign” in the U.S. She said “we’ll continue to evaluate” whether more might follow.

Proud said the redesign was intended “to give our customers more of a reason to make McDonald’s a destination.”

“People are using our restaurants differently today than they did five, 10, 20 years ago,” she said. “People are multi-tasking, doing more on a given day. … You want to be able to open your laptop, log on and get some work done while you’re eating.”
