Ankle Biters

“Forget about what you’ve seen in the movies. All the legends are bogus: Vampires like sunlight, stakes don’t work, garlic is delicious and I really, really wish I was Blade, but unfortunately I happen to be lame.”

Jarv’s Rating: 0 fucking Changs. Walter most unimpressed.

Alright, I own up- I did doctor the end of that quote.

I’ve been on a right run of garbage recently. I actually saw this before Return of The Living Dead 2, but it made me die a bit inside, so I haven’t got round to writing it up until today.

Let me be absolutely clear about this from the start: this film is an abhorrent pile of garbage, I have nothing good at all to say about it. It’s grossly incompetent, but not in a fun way, the acting is awful, it neglects the absolute basics of making a film, the special effects are dire, the writing is atrocious, it is completely incoherent and it is no fun whatsoever.

This really makes me cross, because the premise is gold and the trailers make it sound much better than it actually is. My tolerance level for these kinds of films is extremely high, I can put up with more than most and can find something good to say about such absolute mince as Head Cheerleader, Dead Cheerleader. So for a film to get a 100% negative review from me, it has to actually work on being bad. Mere laziness and incompetence won’t cut it. This is that film.

The premise of the film is that in the near future the world (read- America) is being overrun by a vicious plague of biker vampire midgets and only Drexel (a half-vampire hybrid that thinks he’s the white version of Blade) and a motley crew of hunters can deal with it (one of the hunters is, incidentally, a multi-millionaire who lives in a white trash farm house- but it’s OK, you can tell he’s a millionaire because he is introduced buying a painting in a gallery. That’s how rich he is, he can buy art). Midget vampires can only make other vampires of diminished stature- to make a normal sized person a vampire they need a normal sized vampire. Luckily for them, there’s a magic sword around and if they kill someone with it, he becomes a big vampire. Cue boredom and irritation, before the most lame showdown I’ve ever seen.

As is usual with vampire films nowadays, they go out of their way to reinvent hundreds of years of Vampire mythology. Drexel kindly explains it, (yawn) but apparently everything we thought we knew about Vampires is actually rubbish. They can only be killed by injecting them with Vampire blood (what, why?), can wonder around in daylight, garlic etc doesn’t work, and so on. I understand that most of these were for budgetary reasons, and I can deal with that, but why the blood thing?

Midgets in these films almost always equal gold- see Chopper Chicks or the mighty Leprechaun films for examples of how to use midgets for fun and profit. This film is a rock solid example of how not to do it. Firstly, when dealing with dwarves the problem is always going to be getting round how fucking silly it looks when a normal sized person fights someone three feet smaller then him. Leprechaun managed it by cheating and using magic. Chopper Chicks humiliated the dwarf for entertainment. However, here, they fail by having people either fall over and wait for the dwarves to jump on and beat them up or (ridiculously) have the dwarf cling on to the back of the person he’s fighting. It’s awful and embarrasing.

However, as much as the waste of midget comdy gold makes me cross, my special anger is reserved for the Helen Keller clone that did the sound work in this. I appreciate that it was made for no money whatsoever, possibly on a camcorder, but someone needs a slap. You can hear the people close to the camcorder really clearly, but if the person speaking is more than 3 feet from it, you can’t hear a damned word. Not a word. The remote for the telly at Casa del Jarv was constantly in action adjusting the volume to try to make out what they were saying before I chucked a huff and sat and watched it in near silence (although the volume was set to pretty near max)with the look of a lottery winner that had lost his ticket on my face.

And as for the action scenes: Just. Fuck. Off.

Again, budgetary issues are at the heart of this, but having Drexel jump from the ground up onto a high gate backwards is not a special effect. Especially when it’s patently obvious that they filmed it by having him jump down from the fucking gate then inserted it in reverse in the film. (This is kind of indicative of the “special” effects in the film. Every so often Blade Drexel takes his sunglasses off to reveal lame contact lenses, and the vampire fangs are blatantly from a joke shop.) Or the fight scene where it looks like Drexel is getting buggered by the big biker vampire dude. And don’t even get me started on the showdown.

Did I mention that this film is also boring. And not just a little bit, terribly, awfully fucking dull. There’s shot after shot after shot of cars and bikes driving around for no apparent reason, and when every vampire in the town turns up at the showdown, they drive around in circles for what feels like forever. Aaaaaaaargh.

So, given all of the above, would I recommend it? Absolutely fucking not, under no circumstances would I even consider saying anything good about it at all. There isn’t even any gratuitous titty shots to enliven things- which is a must for low budget schlock.

This leads me to my conclusion- who is to blame for this? It would be easy to blame Adam Minarovich, being as he wrote it, directed it, starred in it, roped his friends and family in to working on it (his parents even did the catering), but I don’t blame him. That’s far too easy. I want to widen the net and find the real culprit of this atrocity. It could be the dickheads that picked it up for distribution, but I see them more as collateral damage. I think the person to blame for it is: THE FUCKING WALLMART EMPLOYEE THAT SOLD THAT MASSIVE TOOL MINAROVICH A DIGITAL CAMERA.

I’m tempted to fly to Buttfuck, Arizona or wherever the fuck this disgrace was filmed, find that asshat and beat him to death with my laptop. It’s all his fault.

If Die You Zombie Bastards didn’t exist then Ankle Biters would be the worst film I’ve ever seen. The film that manages to be so bad it’s actually bad.

Email Marketing on a Budget

Today I stumbled upon an email marketing platform called MailChimp, which allows users to send up to

Today I stumbled upon an email marketing platform called MailChimp, which allows users to send up to 3,000 emails per month to up to 500 contacts for free. Forever. This is just perfect for a smaller organisation with a limited communications budget.

So why would you bother using an email marketing campaign manager rather than just sending a bog standard email from outlook, hotmail, yahoo etc?

Here’s why:

It’s pretty
You can create attractive HTML emails (with pictures and links) alongside plain text alternative versions. Creating an attractive email campaign is usually done in a WYSIWYG editor, so it means that you don’t have to know lots of fiddly html code either.

It’s personal
You can personalise your email campaign – for example, addressing it as ”Dear Laura” rather than “Dear Colleague” (effectively a mail merge online). With an email you can opt-in and opt-out functions, and functions whereby your reader can forward to a friend or update their details.

Measurable Results
Sending an email campaign means that you can monitor who opens your emails and which links they click. It also helps you to manage your contacts by reporting on the number of “soft bounces” (i.e. out of office replies) or “hard bounces” (i.e. email address no longer in use) that you receive. You can also compare reports and effectiveness of archived campaigns.

Time Effective
Email communication is quick to set up and is instant in its delivery (no postal strikes!) – plus you can usually time your campaign to send at a specific time / day. Email is global and it’s 24 hour.

Cost Effective
Sending an e-marketing campaign is also very cost effective. As with the example of MailChimp – there are free offers out there (although sending options can be limited), but there are also many other platforms that offer a variety of different pricing options.

Of course there other things to take into consideration as well. Such as;

The high “noise to action” ratio of email communications (people receive a lot of email during the course of a day – much of which gets forgotten about / ignored)

Data protection – make sure you aren’t spamming people! (read the Email Marketing Council’s best practice guidelines here)

You won’t be able to communicate with people who have no access to the internet

As mentioned previously, the MailChimp system caught my eye as it seemed quite a generous free offering. However, there are many organisations that can help with email marketing, as you can see from this extensive list from the Direct Marketing Association

Get that damned screwdriver out of my head!

Jarv’s Rating: 1 Chang of 4

I hate it when this happens. I don’t want to come across as a miserable bastard when I’m doing these reviews (well, more miserable than usual) but this is just such a gigantic let down.

Return of the Living Dead was the film that took Romero outside and then beat him with one of his own shoes. It was a superb, hilarious, irreverent, gross horror comedy that took all the best bits of zombie films and added a few of its own. It was smart without being smug, nasty when necessary and one of the most genuinely enjoyable schlocky horror films of its’ time.

This, however, is not. It does, to be fair, give me a great chance to expand on one of Jarv’s golden rules of schlock horror, but in comparison to its incredible elder sibling and the inventive, shocking and superb second sequel it’s a massive, massive failure.

I can hear the thinking behind this. It sounds exactly like “KA-CHING”. The original was a highly successful little film, so a sequel was always going to be inevitable. To make matters worse, it deliberately sets out to compare itself to the original, and is lacking in every single conceivable way. It’s like Audley Harrison comparing himself to Mohammed Ali- just stupid and outclassed.

It is also as lazy as you can get. Dialogue, location, plot, and actors are all rehashed in a shameless and frankly bone-idle attempt to recreate the magic. To make matters worse, one of the returning cast members even drops a wink to the audience by saying “I’m sure we’ve seen this before”. You don’t say. I don’t ask for a lot from these movies, but please put some fucking effort in.

Not to mention the fact that the town was nuked in the original, and they even gave a route for a sequel that would have made sense. This isn’t so much Part 2 as “Part 1, but gelded”. The original is 18 rated in the UK. This is 15. As soon as you see a drop in rating then you know that it isn’t going to be anywhere near as good as the original.

Plotwise: 3 kids find a barrel of trioxin. Gas gets out, chaos and hilarity fail to ensue, before undead horde are defeated using the brilliant plan of a truck load of beef brains and enough electricity to power Kim Cattrel’s vibrator for 45 seconds. It’s moronic dogshit of the lowest order, stupid without being fun, and any momentary enjoyment is buried under the weight of it’s own self-regard.

The acting is not worthy of mention, and the direction is insipid and uninspired. The writing, on the other hand, is worth a mention- because it’s crap. Imagine the bastard lovechild of Kevin Williamson and Diabolo Cody scrawling on a wall in crayon and I bet they would come up with “zingers” like you get in this film. I can’t physically be arsed to go through them all, and the thought of doing so makes me depressed, but really, crap like “You’ve got a big mouth and no brains” really makes me want to kick the writer. All the characters are poorly thought out stereotypes, the set pieces have as much tension as the skin on a bowl of custard, and it manages to be dull, predictable and frustrating.

So, given all the above, is there any reason on earth to watch this lame rehash? Well, I’ve given it one solitary Chang, and that’s for the zombies themselves, who are hilarious. The brilliant exchange where the zombie tries to persuade the survivors to return to the hospital is very funny, and they are as a rule much more professional than the previous effort. They aren’t a patch on the glorious and hideous monster Julie in the second sequel, but at least the Tarman makes a welcome cameo. If you must inflict this tripe on yourself, they do briefly enliven things (before it slides right back into the crapper with the young couple whinging about something or other).

I know this is from the original, but I couldn't find a good one from this film

And this brings me on to Jarv’s 2nd rule of schlock horror: do not make a child the central character. The reason being, as soon as you do you neuter the film. Only truly vindictive and bad natured films kill children. Schlock is more playful and inept fun- so the presence of a child as the main protagonist automatically means that said child is not going to die (as much as he may deserve it), and if he/she does then it’s a horrible piece of shit that needs avoiding anyhow. Teenagers are great cannon fodder, but anyone under the age of 16 should not feature in a risk taking capacity at all.

Overall, would I recommend this? No, I most certainly would not. Watch the original for laughs and the third film for genuine horror. This is boring, ill conceived, downright lazy cash in with all the charm of a steaming dog turd on a summer’s day.

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Director: Oren Peli

Writer: Oren Peli

Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Ashley Palmer, Amber Armstrong

Warning: Some Spoilers

Capitalizing on people’s fascination with the paranormal and our innate fear of the unknown, Paranormal Activity has recently taken movie theaters by storm. The $15,000.00 independent movie opened to limited release. Making the most of their marketing dollars, the distributors gave people the power to drive the movie to unexpected financial success. As more people saw Paranormal Activity and spread the word, people visited the official movie website in droves to “Demand It” and the movie quickly gained screen time at additional theaters across the country.

Personally, I was excited to see this movie as soon as I first heard about it. Being regaled as the next Blair Witch Project, I was intrigued. Soon enough, just about everyone I know was talking about it. I heard mixed reviews from the early audiences. Some people found the movie long and dull. Others didn’t mind the length and found the experience worth it for the final 30 minutes. While others simply exclaimed, “You have to see Paranormal Activity!”

Finally, I found myself in a nearly empty theater (thanks to Twilight: New Moon) at a 12:35am screening. As I said, I was intrigued, but also skeptical. Let’s face it, there has been a lot of hype about this movie. The more press a movie gets, the lower my expectations. Honestly, I expected to be bored. Paranormal Activity wasn’t a bore, but it was no thriller either.

The story is simple: a young couple videotapes their paranormal experiences as a malevolent entity terrorizes them. From the moment the movie began the acting screamed drama class exercise. Between Micah’s desire to handle the situation himself as a stereotypical “tough guy,” and Katie as the terrified student who cries without shedding a tear, the performances are far from Oscar worthy. Even the performances from the small supporting cast come across as forced. One can overlook the acting.

As the movie progresses, we see the experiences build in intensity from just a bump in the night to more tangible experiences, finally into demonic possession. The effects aren’t great (remember that small budget), but they were done well. What Paranormal Activity gets right is the suspense. There weren’t any terrifying moments, and nothing really to make you jump out of your seat. However, I won’t deny there were times when I got a chill and I thought twice about that noise in the night. Nonetheless, Paranormal Activity draws you into the experience and you find yourself relating to both Katie and Micah – Katie for her desire to be rid of this entity that has followed her through life, and Micah for his uncontrollable desire to document more tangible experiences. Let’s face it, most of us would like to have our own paranormal experiences and some seek out opportunities to commune with other-worldly entities.

Paranormal Activity truly is today’s Blair Witch Project. I think of it as a very low-budget Poltergeist. Either way, I am glad I saw the movie and I would recommend everyone see it. However, once is enough. There isn’t enough substance here to warrant multiple viewings. Paranormal Activity won’t translate well to home viewing on the small screen, so it is worth it to get to the theater.

Attractions: Ever since The Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the city is kept up its standards for architecture and viewing pleasure. From our ferris wheel to giant tower, Chicago had many landmark places that bring tourists and locals together. Our Park District never seizes to please us, and the transportation can get you to any of the sites.

Entertainment: As the “Second City”, Chicago is home to many performances, from improv or Shakespearian to sports or blues, there’s a place to find it in both an intimate and exciting setting. Find out where you can get the most for your money, and have a damn good time.

Museums and Art Galleries: explores the city’s lesser-known (and cheaper!) art, cultural and science museums. Also links to dates of free or discounted days at major, comparable museums.

Restaurants: A brief guide to the city’s hidden treasures, buon appetit! Including restaurants to eat dinner and places to go afterward for dessert, all are mostly on the lower end of the price range.

At first, the proud parents welcome the challenge of decorating the baby's area with great excitement in the belief that they can create a sympathetic environment for the child they are expecting. The cost of necessary nursery items can become daunting to many shoppers especially inert, high quality girl baby bedding.

If you stay focused and recognize that nurseries cannot be put together in a day, you'll be able to make a beautiful room that your son or daughter will enjoy. Prices vary between merchants on nursery items, make comparisons before you purchase and look for manufacture or shipping discounts.

Parents may want to look for single units of baby bedding because the prices may comparable to the same items in sets. Baby crib bedding is often found sold in sets with dust ruffles, window shades, and other items that will help new parents decorate their nursery with a single theme.

After settling on a multiple piece crib set as the best way to save money while still getting what you want for the nursery, it's time to think about whether you prefer the decorations tailored to gender or not, since this thematic focus will help cut down on the products you'll be browsing. When choosing gender neutral decor parents are often let to the choice of a theme.

Among the selections of decorative crib bedding and accessories that are ideal for a child's room are the ever popular botanical images. Your baby will be soothed and stimulated by the bedding you choose, so look for beautiful imagery of colorful flowers and plants combined with friendly animal shapes. With this in their minds, many consumers have decided to decorate their nurseries with the bright colors of Hawaiian crib bedding.

A Hawaiian room allows parents to combine decorations from the ocean and island themes into one colorful tropical nursery. Traditional island design, moreover, never skimps on color, for it leaves parents free to combine pinks, reds and purples, and then to pair them with turquoise and orange. Surround your little one with the serenity of paradise with a Hawaiian theme decorated nursery.

This is the last movie directed and starred in by action legend Wang Ho 왕호 better known as Casanova

This is the last movie directed and starred in by action legend Wang Ho 왕호 better known as Casanova Wong 卡萨伐 from his many, many, many Hong Kong action flicks. OK, OK, not his last movie, I mean, this ex-marine also helmed the South Korean Ministry of Defense propaganda flick Soldiers speak even when they die 군인은 죽어서도 말한다 (the Master isn’t entirely sure whether he correctly understood this title). Anyway, a legend Casanova Wong (whose Korean birth name was Kim Yong-Ho 김용호) is (thank you, Master Yoda). He played opposite the greats of Hong Kong martial arts cinema in the 70s in Golden Harvest productions or should Master Lee say that the greats of Hong Kong martial arts cinema in the 70s played opposite him? Considered the greatest performer of the scissor kick (well, until Jean-Claude came along), Wong truly belongs in the gallery of pulp greats and if the Master is ever not too busy to update it, he gladly will.

Back to Bloody Mafia: well, Wang Ho/Casanova Wong was a better martial arts actor than a director unfortunately. Hence this thoroughly predictable good gangster vs bad gangster flick featuring an actor named Kim Du-Han (the Master shits you not), a nose bitten off in the pleasurable heat of the moment, an exploding car but the explosion shown is not that of a car exploding in a parking lot but of something exploding on a grassy meadow (trying to save some money there, Mr Director?), a Korean night club singer very badly lip-syncing to Whitney Houston’s (or Dolly Parton’s) I Will Always Love You, silly gangster costumes (what’s with the hat, Kim Du-Han? And what the *$%& is with the choker?!), a soundtrack so 80s it must have sounded precisely that even in the 80s… And if you think that is enough what about: very bad sex in a dressing room, UB40 accompanying even worse sex in the back seat of a car and an embarrassing dance at a wedding.

Master Lee likes low-budget productions, but this is pushing it. Really now, did you have replace the Korean song with Withney’s crooning, Casanova, while the Korean singer’s lips are singing something so different, it doesn’t even look like lip-syncing anymore? Even Britney would have been ashamed to put this on. The action, though sped up, isn’t half bad, but it’s not very imaginative either. Nobody doubts the merits of the actors as martial artists, but a good martial arts director could have worked wonders here. And although there’s enough of bad guys, cool stares, pretty and loose women, evil villains, perky-breasted night club hostesses and high-kicking, fast-punching heroes to go around, this film has neither heart nor soul. It’s a cold, cold movie and that just doesn’t entertain. It annoys. And even Casanova Wong better pay attention when Master Lee is annoyed. It wouldn’t be the first time one of Wong’s famous scissor kicks would be cut in two…

In all, this is a rather unpleasant movie, with too much violence that comes across as somehow being ‘real’ and meant to hurt. The Master liked Casanova Wong dealing out portions of pain in his old movies, laying down the law and smacking heads, but he is not so sure he likes the violence, torture and attempted rape in his particularly dark and simplistic flick. The Master says: could and should have been better. Thumbs down, even though it stars Casanova Wong.

Anyway, without these death-defying devils who perform incredible feats such as jumping off walls and bridges, crashing cars (and forgetting to properly lock themselves in their seats) and kick one another’s ass (which sure looks for real), we’d be stuck watching the 20th rerun of Winter Sonata.
This is a cleverly made low-budget documentary, which delicately threads the fine line between ironic commenting and heartfelt empathy. They make you laugh, these hopeless daredevils who just want to hurt themselves and look good while doing so, but they also make you feel for them. And the auditions… have you ever seen a bunch of more self-deluded, positively irredeemable characters (OK, except for all those asses who got their (*&#($% kicked by the Master)? This is also a documentary that gives you a good feel what the Korean film world is like; how difficult it is to attain success and how ephemeral success is once attained. At the same time, the viewer is left with a sense of wonder why these stuntmen do what they do, why they suffer this much for so little recognition and money. Yet, and this is what makes the documentary a successful one, you can kind of see why someone would choose to become a stuntman in Korea. Thumbs up for Action Boys from the Master.

A- wie AaRON

What happens when you sleep? I am sure this question gets you in the thinking mode for a while, you

What happens when you sleep?

I am sure this question gets you in the thinking mode for a while, you get some bad and good thoughts, but once you go down you see.

Paranormal Activity

That gets all the good feelings apart and just makes you think of spooky things, and that’s what the movie guys wanted, from the very start of the movie they established something in your mind which they successfully maintained throughout the movie.

This Low budget US Horror movie just made from $15,000 has in just about no time grabbed more then $65m making a super return on investment.

Now the main thing to be noticed is that what made it such a big hit, its not having the top stars, no special effects {as everything seems to be so real on the Tri-Pod Camera}, It succeeded because of 2 things –

Firstly, the people who have made it just wanted to make a horror movie and that’s what they did had there focus on one single thing that’s to create awesome thrill throughout the movie and that’s what makes it remarkable. It was made by Oren Peli, an Israeli-born videogame designer with no formal film training, who shot it in a week in 2006.

Imagine it took just about a week’s time that’s it to make it one of the most profitable movies on Box-Office ever.

See what you can easily figure out is that it was worth a remark about in so many different aspects the budget, the actors, the team behind it, the movie creation style and this list goes on even if you have seen the trailers of this movie.

Secondly, As it was a low cost movie the marketing was one of the most important part, though the movie says a lot about itself but still there was room to create buzz among people. For the first instance they targeted audience which was either a horror loving one or the one which admires new stuff and they knew it that if they are able to convince them then they don’t need to spread a lot on advertising.

As these people would then act like sneezers and spread the word for further.

The Simple Marketing Plan –

It started its campaign by screening film festivals such as Screamfest and Slamdances and was able to impress critics and the admirers included Steven Spielberg who took a copy of the DVD the moment he saw it, he admits that after watching it he had a feeling that his bathroom door opened itself.

The next step was to get to the audience with a bang, which they easily achieved by exploiting the brilliant power of web to create an awesome word of mouth situation for the film. The use of sites like Facebook, Twitter and most importantly Digg that’s where I saw it for the first time and simply recognized the impact it had on the regular Diggers.

They used the thrive of evangelism, as most of the decisions on the internet today are made by social suggestions if you have some thing really good to share it would spread on its own.

The lesson which we get from this story is to concentrate on our product or service to one focus point that is what makes it a remarkable one, plus its not necessary to spread millions on advertising anymore as people who love your product or service will act as live loyal banners themselves.

Oh..I forgot to mention one more lesson, Don’t watch it alone

Casserole. My darling casserole.

Casserole is a good thing nowadays. I’m broke, time-starved, and craving comfort food. So I found this recipe that reminds me of something my Granny Blanche used to make many years ago. Funny how good squash and butter taste together.

Ciao!

Squash Casserole
2 lb. diced yellow summer squash
3 whole carrots, peeled, diced
1 onion, chopped
1 stick butter, melted
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 8oz container sour cream
buttery cracker crumbs (Townhouse)

Cook all vegetables in water in a large saucepan until tender. (season with pinch or two of salt) Drain and let cool. Sprinkle some of the crumbs at the bottom of a buttered shallow casserole dish. In a large mixing bowl, stir sour cream, mushroom soup, and melted butter together. Mix in vegetables and spread over crumbs in casserole dish. Sprinkle top with crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes till browned and bubbly.
