I was struck by WPP chief Sir Martin Sorrell’s comment on the marketing services industry at ad:tech this week. “The people who run agencies tend to be of an older vintage – to put it politely,” he said. “They tend to be resistant to change and want to spend the last three to four years of their careers travelling around the world rather than dealing with fundamental strategic issues on a daily basis.”

They should be so lucky to reach “an older vintage” these days. The number of people over 50 who are active in the ad business is a vanishingly small figure, according to Incorporated Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) figures, and it’s getting smaller all the time. One particularly endangered species seems to be the heads, or group heads, of UK network creative agencies.

To take a small but illuminating sample, Gary Leih, group head of Ogilvy (just over 50), and Tim Lindsay, president of TBWA\London (53), have both been put out to pasture recently. We could perhaps add the case of Bruce Haines, group chief at Leo Burnett, who managed to stay the course until the ripe old age of 55. And the comparatively youthful former chairman and group chief executive of Saatchi & Saatchi, Lee Daley, who moved on in his late forties to an all-too-brief spell as marketing director of Manchester United. While we’re there, let’s tie in the long time management void at the top of Lowe, and the problems in filling the top slots at Publicis UK a couple of years ago when the self-same Lindsay left for TBWA.

To go back to Sorrell, I’m not sure anyone – other than himself perhaps – is capable of dealing with “fundamental strategic issues on a daily basis”. Just one or two over a two-year period is usually enough. As far as I can see, that’s exactly what Daley, Leih and Lindsay tried to do. They all instituted fairly far-reaching management changes in an effort to meet the digital challenge subverting traditional agency structures. With hindsight, the problem seems to be that they were judged not to have gone far enough. Or, put another way, they may indeed have embraced a “fundamental strategic issue”, but they were not allowed long enough to savour their triumph. The truth is, if an agency doesn’t bring in enough big business in the first two years of your tenure, you’re likely to be turfed out in the third. The digital challenge may simply have made it a little harder to win that business in the first place.

Lindsay was probably on skid row once his agency lost the advertising account for McCain to Beattie McGuinness Bungay. He was lucky to survive the subsequent – abortive – attempt to buy BMB. Nissan had also begun to look shaky. Pinning the Media Arts rebranding fiasco on him sounds like the thinnest of subterfuges employed by a management that had long since lost confidence in him – fairly or otherwise.

Bevor wir ins Elsass an den Ausgangspunkt unserer Reise zurückkehren, wandere ich in Gedanken 3 Jahre zurück. Warum, das werden Sie gleich erfahren und Sie werden genau so staunen wie ich als Betroffene damals staunte.

Wer gerne ab und an die Zwischenwelten (die autre monde) besucht oder gegenüber Dingen, die “zwischen Himmel und Erde” geschehen, aufgeschlossen ist, kennt sicher auch die Begleiter in diesen Welten, die Krafttiere. Ich liebe sie, diese Zwischenwelten, und bin mit der Gabe gesegnet, jederzeit ohne viel Brimborium und Trommelrituale oder ‘Sonnentänze’ abzutauchen. Und dort treffe ich mein Krafttier. Auch Herr Federwelt hat diese Gabe, vor allem, wenn er kreativ arbeitet und über Kompositonen oder Arrangements sitzt.

“Was ist dein Krafttier”, fragte ich eines Tages. Wir hatten nie über autre monde oder Schamanismus expressis verbis gesprochen. Wir lebten es einfach.

“Leo.” Die Antwort kam spontan und wie aus der Pistole geschossen.

Leo? Du meinst den Löwen? Ich war sehr verwundert, ist Herr Federwelt doch wie ich ein passionierter Hunde- und Bärenmensch.

“Klar. Was sonst?”

Gut. Was sonst. Man soll das ja nicht hinterfragen, sondern einfach (zu)lassen.

Eines Morgens, viele Monate nach meiner Frage, wir tranken gerade unseren ersten Espresso, sah Herr Federwelt mich nachdenklich an und sagte: “Ich bin Leo.”

“Hm?”

Er nickte, dann sprudelte es aus ihm heraus. “Ich heiße Léon d.B. und ich habe am Heiligabend Geburtstag.”

“Hä?” Ich fand das sehr komisch. “Du heißt P. und hast am 16.9. Geburtstag. Wach auf!”

“Non”, meinte Herr Federwelt, dessen schulfranzösisch, gesprochen in bewussten Zustand, mehr als grottig ist, plötzlich in einer ganz anderen Sprache. “Je m’appelle Léon …” Er wechselte ins Elsässische “… und Grandmère *at immer gesagt, isch *abe mit dem Chrischtkindle Geburtstag. Deshalb *abe isch zu *eiligabend zwei Mal Bescherung bekommen.”

Ja, so fing es an … und inzwischen steht auch fest, dass diese Erkenntnis an jenem Morgen der Wahrheit entspricht.

Und wissen Sie was? Über Nacht verjüngte sich Herr Federwelt auch gleich noch um vier Jahre. In Großbuchstaben. VIER JAHRE !!! Nicht nur sein amtlich verfügtes Geburtsdatum ist falsch, nein, auch das Geburtsjahr.

Nun, sagen Sie selbst, klingt das nicht bescheuert?

Ao que parece eu devo ter algum tipo de fixação por desodorantes e propaganda relacionadas, pois eu venho mais uma vez falar sobre isso. Mas é que esse é um assunto que eu considero tão difícil de ser tratado com criatividade sem perder a classe que quando alguém consegue, merece ser comentado! Mais uma vez desodorante e mais uma vez Rexona. Agora, o produto é o Rexona Hair Minimising, que promete deixar os pelos das axilas mais finos e reduzidos.

O comercial defende uma sensação mais suave na região onde o produto é utilizado e convida a mulherada a deixar os bracinhos de fora. “Estamos estendendo o benefício Hair Minimising para o portfólio de Rexona porque acreditamos muito nesta fórmula. Queremos ajudar as consumidoras da marca com a incômoda sensação dos pelos das axilas, além de estimulá-las a mostrá-las”, diz Ana Carolina Jácome, gerente de marketing de Rexona. (fonte aqui) Para mostrar isso, mulheres levantam os braços e as manga compridas de suas blusas saem voando e explodindo no céu como fogos de artíficios. O efeito foi muito bem feito e ficou muito animado e bonito. Uma maneira muito criativa de vender a ideia.

Não consegui achar qual agência que fez a peça, mas pelo que pude perceber a Lowe é a agência global de Rexona. Também não descobri em que país a peça foi produzida, mas ao procurar a resposta para essas perguntas, descobri que a marca também fez uma ação muito legal junto aos jornalistas, entregando um kit com duas embalagens do produto e uma camiseta regata mostrando a confiança de que após usar o Rexona Hair Minimising você pode colocar tranquilamente as axilas de fora. Muito legal! Achei isso no blog Casa da Luluzinha.

O produto, que faz parte da linha Skin Care tem uma embalagem mais “premium” em tons de dourado e a fragrância, com notas florais, frutais e musk, foi desenvolvida por uma consultoria internacional e testado entre as consumidoras.

Só a título de demonstração, acho que vale a comparação com um comercial de Dove para um produto que oferece o mesmo benefício. (Tá em holandês – ? – mas dá para ter uma ideia. A mesma peça passava aqui no Brasil.)

Eu, particularmente, tenho muito mais vontade de comprar o produto da Rexona que o da Dove! Adorei!

Evidentemente esta no es la forma. Nissan y Skoda jamás se unirán para sacar al mercado el nuevo modelo Nisskodan. Pero encontrarme con esta curiosa coincidencia exterior me ha hecho preguntarme de nuevo por qué las marcas no colaboran más entre ellas.

Y no me refiero a que Nissan pague 1/3 de la valla exterior y Skoda 2/3, para ahorrarse cada una un dinero… Me refiero a que Nike y Apple unan sus fuerzas y creen conjuntamente un producto tan exitoso como Nike+.

Fernando Vega-Olmos, impulsor de Lola (Lowe + Latina), hablaba hace no mucho de esto aventurando qué pasaría si dos marcas de Unilever (Axe + Magnum) se unieran para crear helados con forma de voluptuosa hembra dirigido a los usuarios del desodorante, tan acostumbrados a devorar mujeres. Seguramente no tiene nada que ver, pero el hecho es que Fernando ya no es más director creativo mundial de Unilever. Y poco después salieron unos helados con forma del nuevo y cachas 007…

Siempre me ha gustado el mestizaje y la fusión, me parece que enriquece, que suma, que es un win/win. Y no lo digo porque quede bien decirlo: mi mujer no es de mi país, ni de mi raza, ni de mi religión, y mis hijos son lo más maravilloso del mundo (vale, soy el padre, pero los que los conozcáis sabéis de lo que hablo).

La fusión es la base de la creación. Asocias dos buenas ideas para crear otra idea mejor. Asocias dos cosas separadas para inventar algo nuevo, por ejemplo, escoba + bayeta = fregona. Que por cierto nunca he entendido por qué los argentinos le tienen manía ¿será por qué es un invento “gallego”? El hecho es que no la utilizan, no existe para ellos, prefieren inundar de agua el suelo y luego barrerlo con una bayeta (en los comercios echan ese agua sucia fuera, a la acera o vereda, es un asco de sistema). De la misma forma que no entiendo por qué en España no han triunfado los telos (hotel + picadero) pero bueno me estoy desviando del tema…

Tampoco tengo tiempo ahora para profundizar más en este tema, ni en otro tema primo-hermano de este: el crossmedia o cómo mezclar adecuadamente los medios enriquece una campaña. Y cómo algunos medios tradicionales, como este exterior, utilizan el mismo aburrido patrón… ¿otro día, vale? Tomaros un cocktail bien mezcladito a mi salud.

Former Home Depot employee, Trevor Keezor, was fired for wearing a lapel pin that says “One Nation under God“.  Home Depot’s response is that Mr. Keezor was fired for violating the company dress code. He wore a pin on his orange apron that expressed his religious beliefs.

Without my saying, it is obvious that the pin is from the Pledge of Allegiance for our very own United States of America.

Yet it’s a violation of dress code? Taking words from our very own Pledge and saying one is “expressing his or her religious beliefs”, is a cause of termination? The same company that gladly accepts money that has “In God we trust” printed on it?

Double standard? Out right stupidity no doubt. Since when do Americans have to fear for our jobs, homes, lives etc. because we believe in our Constitution, support our country and can just be down right patriotic if we damn feel like it. When did that become a crime?

The whole notion of being politically correct makes me want to vomit. If Mr. Keezor can’t wear his button, then Home Depot should stop accepting US bills and only take foreign currency. God only knows what’s written on their money.

BOYCOTT Home Depot. Shop at Lowes instead.

I’d like to relate a little back and forth I’ve been having with a fellow member of our little group here, Sean Grigsby, regarding the use of tense. Several of my more recent stories have been written in present tense, much to the chagrin of young Sean, who doesn’t feel present tense is proper for a work of fiction.

Here’s the interesting part: What Sean didn’t like about a couple of my present tense stories were exactly the things I did like about them. Here was my explanation, specifically regarding a short called ‘Muscle Memory’, a comedy about bodyswitching that begins with a guy waking up to discover he now inhabits his wife’s body, and he’s not alone. The dog and cat have switched, his next door neighbors have as well. There’s a scene where our main character, Billy, is trying to breastfeed his young son while his neighbor, Tucker, now inhabiting the body of his wife, can’t stop staring at the bare-breasted spectacle…

What I like about present tense is its immediacy, the sense of urgency it implies. I guess we’ll just have to disagree here because I feel it’s perfect for this story. The plight of the characters, to me, feels more urgent and helps put the reader right there at the table with them, staring at the guy’s tits and sharing in their bewilderment. After awhile, past tense just gets too damn old. Every story that I wrote in past tense began to sound and read and feel the same to me. You need to experiment sometimes, see what else is possible.

The point of this amiable exchange would be, there is no right way, just as there is no wrong way. There are certain rules to be followed in writing, but rules were made to be broken, too. Personally, I think it would be wrong not to experiment from time to time. Try a different tense, or bang something out in 1st person. You never know what might happen. It’s like when you go to your wife’s closet and try on her lacy dainties, you know, just to see how they feel. Or, uh… so I’m told. By Kevin Wallis.

Ach ja, war das schön… Und erinnert mich irgendwie an die Zeit in der ich wirklich noch ein Kind war. Heute war ich nämlich mit meiner Mom und meinen Großeltern in der Zoom Erlebniswelt im Zoo.

Meine Kamera kommt ja grundsätzlich mit, wenn ich in den Zoo gehe, also könnt ihr euch über ein paar Fotos und über ein ganz süßes Video freuen.

Ein witziges Erlebnis hatten wir auch bzw. meine Oma. In der Zoom Erlebniswelt gibt es die Lemureninsel. Auf dieser besagten Insel laufen die roten Varis frei herum und wenn man Glück hat, kann man sie sogar streicheln. Heute hatten wir Glück! Sehr viel Glück, denn heute ließen sich die Varis nicht nur streicheln. Einer sprang meiner Oma tatsächlich auch auf die Schulter (Davon gibt´s auch ein Foto *gg*) und ging so schnell nicht wieder runter. Na ja, sind ja meistens eigentlich ganz liebe Kerlchen. Ist ja sonst auch nichts weiter passiert, aber so etwas ist selten. Habe mich an den Varis halb tot geknipst, weil sie meine absoluten Lieblingstiere sind.

Die Timberwölfe haben sich heute auch mal blicken lassen. Ist eigentlich eher seltener der Fall, was ich sehr schade finde, da ich auch Wölfe sehr mag. Aber gut, wie dem auch sei, ich hab sie mal gesehen und damit bin ich auch zufrieden. Vielleicht lag es daran, dass es mittlerweile schon ziemlich dämmrig war *mit den Schultern zuck* Soll mir auch wurscht sein =)

Die Welt Asien ist leider immer noch nicht fertig. Der bisherige Termin für die Eröffnung soll allerdings im März 2010 sein. Da bin ich ja mal gespannt und darauf freu ich mich auch schon. Noch mehr Tiere *.* Und hoffentlich Pandabärchen *flausch*

Atunci cand a lansat noul Axe in Uruguay, agentia Lowe Ginkgo din Montevideo a facut urmatoarea smecherie:

Dupa ce trimiteai SMS-ul, primeai un MMS cu restul reclamei. Acum reclama era completa. Iar tu, satisfacut. Genial, as spune.

Ich habe eben etwas unglaubliches im TV gesehen, was ich euch gerne mitteilen möchte. Es lief eben eine Sendung namens “Der Löwenmann – Allein unter Raubtieren”. Bei dieser Sendung ging es um Kevin Richardson, der in einem Reservat für Raubkatzen und anderen Wildtieren lebt. Er päppelt Jungtiere auf und hat jahrelange Erfahrung im Umgang mit den großen Katzen. Unglaublich was ich da gesehen habe…

Richardson wird u.a. von den Hyänen- und Löwenrudeln als vollwertiges Mitglied angesehen und er hat sogar einen höheren Rang als Mitglieder der eigenen Art. Er verbingt die Nächte mit ihnen, kümmert sich um die Jungen (die verstoßen wurden) und noch vieles mehr. Manche Tiere sind auch so zahm, dass sie für Film- und Fotoaufnahmen in Frage kommen. Eine Hyäne liebt es beispielseise liebend gern im Auto zu fahren.

Aber mal abgesehen davon möchte ich nun nichts weiter dazu schreiben. Lasst die Bilder einfach auf euch wirken.
