As a film student and an independent filmmaker there were a lot of things I had to consider in order

As a film student and an independent filmmaker there were a lot of things I had to consider in order put my production bag together.

It is widely believed that the budget of your film make the aesthetics. Even if that is true, there are ways to work around the money constraint and still produce a good looking and well crafted piece.

Lowepro Vertex 300AW Backpack

What I’m going to present in this series of posts may not be the cheapest way to produce a film. However, the cost-benefit relation will pay off and most importantly, you won’t need a 4 people crew to carry a half a dozen Pelican cases full of gear.

The first decision I had to make was: which camera to use? The reasoning was something like this:

- The footage had to be HD (1080P, 24fps) and of great image quality.
- I wanted to be able to shoot slow-motion (60fps).
- I needed long lens and macro-cinematography.
- The camera had to perform well under bright and low light conditions.
- The memory cards couldn’t be extremely expensive.
- I had to be able to put everything inside 1 or 2 carry-on bags.
- It couldn’t be a $6.000 camera…

With all this in mind and, once again, on a tight budget, a few cameras were among the options and the new Canon 7D matched all of the requirements. The fact that I already had a few Canon lenses that I could use was a big plus, yet, it doesn’t take much to put together a good production kit.

Here is the complete list of my cinematography bag.

- Canon 7D
- Canon lens EF 24-105mm L – Medium range zoom
- Canon lens EF 100-400mm L – Telephoto zoom
- Canon lens EF-S 10-22mm – Wide angle zoom
- Canon lens EF 100mm Macro – Close-up lens
- 77mm B+W Polarizer
- 77mm B+W 0.9 ND Filter (cuts the light by 3 stops)
- 5 Canon LP-E6 batteries
- 2 MicroPro Litepanels
- 5 Sandisk 16GB CF memory cards
- 3 Kingston 133X CF memory cards

With all these production tools the craft of the film was greatly enhanced.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Ok the time is nearly here to replace my current camera bag (Lowepro Orion Trekker II). Its be

Ok the time is nearly here to replace my current camera bag (Lowepro Orion Trekker II). Its been a very good little bag, cheap (well free actually) thanks to my good friend Mark Boadey, it holds my DSLR kit with no trouble but it does not have a weather cover and its pretty full now so time to upgrade.

I did a what’s in my camera bag video for my youtube channel which shows the Lowepro Orion Trekker II and what it can hold. (click play below if you want to watch)

I have a couple of requirements/reasons for the upgrade. Ok you ready for this Lowepro.

Needs to carry the following….

Canon EOS 500D with BG-E5 Battery Grip (Currently Own)

Sony DSC-H50 Bridge/Video SD Camera

Sony DCR-PC120E PAL SD Camcorder

Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Prime (Currently Own)

Canon EF-S 18-55 Kit Lens (Currently Own)

Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS lens (Currently Own)

Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS (Future purchase)

Canon EF-S 10-22 (Future purchase)

Canon EF 24-105L F4 IS (Future purchase) – Love this lens.

Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro

Up to Canon 300/400mm F2.8 Prime (Considering expandability)

Cleaning Gear (Rocket Blower, Lens Pens, Lens Cloth’s) (Currently Own)

Gorilla Pod (Currently Own)

Tripod(Currently Own – Manfrotto 190XB)

Flash Guns

5 in 1 Reflector (I have 2 of these)

Chargers/Wires & Various Accessories

Memory Cards

15.4” Laptop

Small External HDD

Other Personal Gear

Water Bottle/Drink Holder (would be nice but not a must)

Now I realise I wont be always carrying all of this stuff together and some Len’s double up on focal lengths (They will most likely be upgraded over time) but I am looking for a bag that will carry allot of/most of this gear to a location if needed plus last a while as my gear collection/requirements change. I am also looking for a few features.

Tripod Holder

Good shoulder straps.

Waist support straps

Airline carry on friendly

Water resistant

All weather cover

Expandability with additional pouches would be nice.

Fairly future proof, don’t want to have to buy again to soon.

Don’t want it to look to big and bulky (more likely for it to be refused as carry on)

Rather it did not scream expensive gear bag.

Now looking at the above lists it’s a big ask, will I find the perfect camera bag..lets see.

The Candidates

Ok I have looked at a few manufacturers Lowepro, Kata, Tarmac, & Think Tank.

Lowepro have 3 bag that have caught my eye.

Kata have nothing that I liked, personal preference that’s all. Not keen on looks and the photo/computer bags did not have enough capacity.

Think Tank – Are too expensive, I’m sure the kit is great but the prices are bit off putting.

Ok so the 3 candidates (all Lowepro) are listed below, in no particular order by the way.

Lowepro – CompuPrimus AW

Lowepro – CompuTrekker Plus AW

Lowepro – Vertex 200 AW

All 3 can carry a tripod, 15.4” laptop, 70-200F2.8, Personal gear, multiple lens are airline carry on approved and have the AW (All Weather) cover. So they all in part meet a good selection of my requirements.

The CompuPrimus AW

The smallest of the 3 bags both in size and capacity with a max lens size of 70-200 F2.8 so you may ask why I have included it in my selection, well it has a few features that I really like to the point that if I could afford it I would buy one and one of the larger bags but I must be sensible and realistic here and buy smart/buy once.

It is also the only bag to be made up of recycled materials and a portion of the sales of the Primus series of bags goes to the Polar Bears International (PBI) organisation.

The features I like are its compact size, configuration with rear entrance to the gear compartment (more secure) and the laptop sleeve with shade cover. The images below show some of these features.

My only problem is that it has limited gear capacity when compares to the two other bags when looking at lens size and number of lens you can carry when carry additional equipment like flash units. Shame as I do really like this bag. I am also wondering if you can get the laptop sleeve separate and use it in other bags because that’s a real nice feature.

2. The CompuTrekker Plus AW

In terms of looks I would say this is the second smallest looking of the 3 bags but is the actual largest (the Vertex 200 looks bigger/bulkier) and it can carry the largest amount of equipment , the carry capacity is very impressive with it able to take a 400mm F2.8 lens, pro DSLR and additional gear. Whilst I am sure it will also carry other personal gear (Lunch, coat etc) it does not seem as suited to do so as the CompuPrimus. Still it does meet more of the criteria in my lists and would be able to take additional kit as it was purchased and carry video equipment along with DSLR with a few lens which would be handy for some shoots/situations when doing behind the scenes videos or just grabbing some footage for youtube. Images of the CompuTrekker Plus AW.

I also like the options regarding configuration in the main compartment, and the removable waist straps which will get in the way during airline check in. So far the sensible money is on this bag I just wish it had the laptop sleeve.

3. The Vertex 200 AW

The third bag in my selection the Vertex 200 AW is not a large as the CompuTrekker but seems larger, the reason is in its design…it looks more suitcase like rather than rucksack and I think this is the reason some people have problems with airlines even though the Vertex 200 is carry on approved. It also seems to have a more professional look to it which is one of the concerns on my list (It looks like an expensive gear bag) so I would have reservations about carrying it on a regular basis. Capacity wise it stacks up to the CompuTrekker Plus AW but just loosing out on the max lens size (300mm F2.8) but it can be configured to carry 2 pro DSLR’s so its a trade off.

Whilst it meets the majority of my requirements the fact it looks bulky and to me screams gear bag is more than a little off putting, I have to consider that I will be carrying the bag on a regular if not daily basis so security has to be factored in.

Some images of the Vertex 200 AW.

Whilst I have not completely discounted the Vertex 200 AW it is 3rd on my list. It has tons of capacity and even has a bigger brother in the Vertex 300 AW if you need more.

Which Bag?

Well it is currently between the Compu Primus AW and the Compu Trekker Plus AW, now the smart money says Compu Trekker but the Primus is just so cool.

The Compu Trekker Plus AW is like I say the sensible option for future proofing/investment but it is missing the laptop sleeve, the portability of the Compu Primus AW, rear access and its capability as a light day pack but it does offer more carrying capacity for current/future gear and more configuration options for different shoot load outs and a better long term investment. As a result I am 90% sure I will be going for the Compu Trekker Plus AW, is it <strike>the </strike>my perfect camera bag well no to be honest but it gets close enough. The perfect camera bag for me would actually be 2 bags … yup you guessed it the Primus and the Trekker but that would cost to much.

The Bag of Choice (ok 90% Choice) – Lowepro Compu Trekker Plus AW

Oh in answer to the question in the title The Perfect Camera Bag – Does it exist? well I’m afraid the answer is a resounding no I really do believe that it does not exist for anyone but hopefully I wont have to upgrade for a few years. Let me know if you come across the perfect camera bag and what figures the price tag has on it .

One other side note - Regarding any gear you look at buying do your research and buy a quality brand after all the saying buy cheap buy twice really does apply to photography gear.

Feel free to comment, provide feedback/suggestions, tell me I can’t spell and thank you for reading.

Now take that lens cap off and go shoot some great photos.

Thanks

As most of you know by now, Zara is becoming a big name in the fashion world. Bringing the world professional suits, flirty skirts, shirts and trousers in both men’s and women’s collection, this is one name that absolutely will not to be forgotten. Now, Zara is offering shoes that will blow your mind with a variety of colors, styles, sizes, and prices. The creators at Zara have brought something to the table for everyone to try, and have made it possible for just about anyone to walk the street in style with their affordable prices.

Some brand name shoes cost up to five hundred dollars if not more, you can find Zara’s brand name styles for as little as one hundred and sometimes less than that, I’ve seen as low as forty dollars online! However, these aren’t your run of the mill cheap shoes; Zara shoes are gorgeous and can make anyone look good. Zara offers women strapped heeled sandals, thick pumps, flats, and many other various styles. By offering so many styles, Zara is creating something for everyone and gives everyone a reason to check them out.

Zara also offers men’s shoes, and while this collection is less popular, it is still a decent collection. Zara shoes for men offers sandals, traditional laced up sneakers and more unique edgy sneakers for those looking to try a bolder look. The men’s collection of Zara shoes is quickly becoming a big trend, what’s most unique; the Zara trend is to wear sandals with long business like trousers. Shockingly enough, this trend has caught on and looks pretty good on men everywhere.

This season, it seems that Zara is experimenting with flats for both men and women. In bold colors like purple and yellow, both men and women are treading the streets with bold colored flat sneakers that look so awkward, it works for them. That seems to be the Zara way though, they have made a fortune off of making things that just shouldn’t work look fabulous on anyone and they have taken styles that are considered traditionally ugly, and made them stylish. That is what fashion is all about, and that is one of the biggest reasons people are clinging to Zara this season, everyone is oozing wondering what will be next for this daring clothing brand.

Have you ever noticed that some 10K runs are actually open to people who want to do a 10K walk? We might assume that the walkers would get run over by the runners but this is far from the truth. In most cases the walkers are accepted as part of the group.

Many people enjoy taking a leisurely 10K walk instead of training to run that distance. They enjoy the scenery as they walk by it and they like the excitement of the race. Some of these races will have a competitive walking division while others will just give space to the walkers.

As an example, sometimes the walkers will start before or after the runners so that they can be at their own pace. Some people are going to just walk casually for the 10K walk and if that is the case they won’t need a lot of training to do it. However if you want to be competitive with your walking you will need to train for the 10K walk.

If you just want to take this stroll make sure that your running shoes are comfortable and that you have been practicing walking 45 to 90 minutes steady. This should have been done in the last month or two of your interest in the 10K walk.

You will want to know that a 10K walk is actually 6.2 miles. You will want to make sure you practiced a bit before you try to do this in a race because you will want to finish this distance. In general people who do a 10K walk actually train for it over an 8 week period. This seems to be standard if you want to walk in competition.

One of the most important areas you will need to master is the art of race walking. This gets you moving at a very fast pace if competition is on your mind. There are also rules for race walking: You have to have one foot on the ground all the time and the leg that is moving forward has to be straight at your knee until it is under your body vertically. This will help you do a better 10K walk as well.

Some people who decide to do a 10K walk may be former runners who either decided to stop running or had to stop because of injuries or illness. The good thing about this type of race is the fact that people in wheelchairs can also be a part of it.

There are many senior citizens who enjoy a 10K walk because it is exhilarating and because they can do it over a long period of time. This is a sport that combines physical fitness with a competitive focus for some. However, you can race walk at a leisure pace if that is what you want to do.

If you are interested in a 10K walk it is a good idea to talk to others who have done it. You may just find a buddy or two to walk with you.

So you are considering printing your own wedding invitations, this is surely a money saving idea. The cost to print wedding invitations professionally is not cheap and you can obtain similar quality by printing on blank wedding invitations.

There are many types of blank printable wedding invitations on the market, especially online. You can find almost any wedding theme blank you are looking for online or at your local print store. I would suggest to first of be sure of how you want your wedding invitations to look before you go shopping. You don’t want to get confused and spend to much time trying to make a choice of what to buy.

Start shopping for your blank printable invitations early enough as a precaution. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that the design you want is on back order. For this very reason you should also have a second pick after you have located your first preference.

If you decide to do the printing yourself you would either be using an inkjet printer which most people have at home or a laser jet. Make sure you know what kind of printer you will be using and double check to make sure the blank printable wedding invitations you purchase will be compatible with the printer.

Laser jet printers offer a better quality print than an inkjet printer and they don’t cost as much as they used to. Consider purchasing a small laser jet printer for your invitations, its an overall good investment even after your wedding printing. The cost per page for printing is a lot less than an inkjet printer.

Make sure you also buy enough extra blank invitations, you will have a learning curve so you will need a few for your test runs and also incase of any mistakes you will make when printing.

Its also a good idea to have another eye check over your invitations as you print, they might detect errors you might not be able to catch.

The type of shoe that a team wears can make the difference between a safe and success season or a se

The type of shoe that a team wears can make the difference between a safe and success season or a season full of failed stunts, injuries and tons of blisters if you are cheerleader. In many stunts, cheerleaders hold other cheerleader by the shoes. Things can turn pretty bad if you are not prepared with the right shoes.

To make sure that you start out your “cheer” career on the right foot, here a few guidelines that can help you choose the right Cheerleading Shoes to provide you with a high performance.

Price- As in most things you get what you pay for. The price you pay for a Cheerleading shoe can make a difference in the quality of the shoe. It cannot only affect the comfort, but also the durability and upkeep. It can range from approximately $20 to $70 with the average shoes running from $30 to $50.

Comfort-Nothing can make you more uncomfortable than a pair of uncomfortable shoes. Look for good cushioning, flexibility, lightweight and breathability in your Cheerleading shoes. Fit/Size- Insure the fit of your Cheerleading shoes. If possible try them on before you purchase them or make sure you can return them if they don’t fit properly.

Features- You’ll want a shoe that is as lightweight as possible but still offers the most comfort, support and durability. Look for any added features such as finger grips, flexibility, shock absorption, scalloped archways and ankle support. Always choose a shoe that meets the needs of your activity, keeping in mind the upkeep of the shoe and if necessary weatherproofing.

Style- Your Cheer squad will probably require you to have a certain color shoe. Most Cheerleading Shoes come in white with added team color insertions. So check the style you’re ordering to be sure they meet your needs in style and colors.

So, without further introduction – here you go – in no particular order – 20 ideas for your favorite photographer:

The best photography book I read in 2009? DuChemin’s Within the Frame. Read the review here. And if the photographer on your list already has that one – here’s his new book – VisionMongers.

Well, I outgrew my “best camera bag evah“!!! With the addition of a lens and speedlite my Lowepro bag became too small…so I decided it was time for more space. And with that I’ve ordered a Crumpler 7 Million Dollar bag!

I maybe could have gotten away with the 6 Million, but decided I didn’t want to risk outgrowing this one too soon & plus if I decide I want to carry my video camera along somewhere I’ll have the room – or if not I’ll have plenty of room for things I would normally carry in my purse or diaper bag if I take kiddos on a photo outing with me! Plus, there are always dreams of new and exciting lenses and then they would already have a home waiting on them!!

So, my Lowepro bag is actually for sell – I’ve listed it on our classifieds at work and will put it on Craig’s List, too I guess – if you’re interested let me know! It is a fabulous bag and I hope I’m as satisfied with the Crumpler as I was with the Lowepro! Anyone have either bag already – what’s your opinion of the bags?

Lowepro Outback series is the replacement model for Lowepro Off Trail. It was launched in early July

Lowepro Outback series is the replacement model for Lowepro Off Trail. It was launched in early July 2009. Scouting around and I found the price for a new Outback 200 is RM280 at Mitmivec. There’s one shop in Low Yat Plaza yesterday offering RM450, almost double the price from what I being offered earlier. Certainly in comparison price in Singapore is way cheaper than KL…

Lowepro Outback 200

Currently this is my fourth Lowepros and this one solely for in-the-action type of bag. Basically it is a beltpack, can carry up to 70-200mm 2.8 (reverse hood) with body attached. Usually I carried 2 bodies, extra batteries and 2 speedlites along. And this bag fits it all harmonously.

Check out youtube to have a better overall look. There are 100, 200 and 300 AW models along its lineup with the price of RM220, RM290 and RM480 respectively.
