Eye ball implants will enable researchers to see the world through the eyes of drug users.

Scientists at MIT’s nanotechnology labs have developed a new type of vision enhancing implant that can be mounted onto the eyeballs of volunteers.
Once in place, the implants pick up the brainwaves of the test subject while under the influence of mind altering drugs such as LSD and are able to transmit the actual hallucinogenic images they are seeing back to a monitor.
“This is a major breakthrough in the field of psychiatric medicine.” Doctor Fred Reeves told  The National Reporter.
“This device will allow us to see exactly what people under the influence of drugs see.  This will help us to understand how certain drugs effect the mind.”
The National Reporter  was on hand during the first field test of the new device to see how it worked.
The first subject was fitted with his broadcasting unit and then given a dose of LSD,  he was then equiped with an inconspicuous antenna that was mounted on top of the head like a hat.
When the LSD began to take effect,  the subject was led away from the test vehicle and set free to walk around the town as the excited scientists watched every thing he was seeing through the monitor.
After awhile the images started to become fuzzy with small flashes of colored light skittering around objects,  then things began to stretch out of shape as if time and space itself was being torn apart.
The scientists watched closely as the subject walked up to a police officer and stared at him for a few minutes.

The subject found the traffic officer very interesting for some reason.

When we looked at the monitor we could see what he found so interesting about the policeman.
In the drug abusers mind, the police officer had become a green clay like creature and the automobiles behind him had somehow morphed into a little troll bridge like one would see in a children’s fantasy film.

An aide who was following the subject to make sure he didn’t get into any trouble, came forward and nudged him away from the police officer and guided him down the street a short distance.
When he began crossing over to sidewalk cafe that was bustling with people, he stopped dead in his tracks and stared wide-eyed at a pair of small people.
For the next few minutes the subject and the tiny couple were locked in a staring contest.
They of course had no idea that he was high on drugs, they thought he was being rude.

Back at the lab’s video monitor we could see exactly what our subject was seeing in his drugged up stupor and it was truly amazing.
To him, the dwarf couple appeared to be some sort of alien creatures and they were making strange sounds, like birds peeping and chirping.
Everything in the background, people, cars and objects seemed to be moving in slow motion and an odd sound like a deep oscillating hum was echoing from the distance.

The dwarf couple appeared to be small alien type beings squirming and making peeping sounds.

After a few minutes, the dwarf couple gave the test subject a dirty look and walked off.
He started to follow them but he was intercepted by the aid and brought back to the lab.
The scientists figured he had too much LSD and that he might get himself into trouble.
The subject was sedated and placed on a cot with his arms and legs strapped down for safety reasons while the scientists sat at the monitors reviewing the recordings of his LSD adventure.
“This is going to be a major breakthrough in the study of drug induced psychosis.” Doctor Freely said. “Instead of guessing what is wrong with a patient and taking great risk to calm them down when they are in this condition, emergency room personal will be able to see what is going on in the minds of their patients and it will be much easier for them to treat them.”
The National Reporter - It’s also very amusing to see the bizarre things that they are seeing.
“Yes, it is.” Doctor Freely said.

For those of you out there who aren’t rabid sports fanatics like myself, allow me to give you a little back story here: In 1970, Doc Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates became the first major league baseball player to pitch a “no-hitter” (a game in which the pitcher does not allow a single player on the opposing team to reach base by way of a hit. This differs from a “perfect game”, in which no batters can reach base at all. This includes by way of error, walk, balk, wild pitch or hit by pitch, or any other conceivable means)

…On acid.

Sorry. He became the first Major League pitcher to throw a no-hitter on acid.

Sadly, Doc died at USC Med Center in Los Angeles, California after a long battle with alcoholism. He became a drug counselor after his baseball career ended, but ultimately died of cirrhosis of the liver. But god damn did he pitch the hell out of the baseball on that fateful June evening in San Diego.

I should also mention that Doc Ellis is a badass for another awesome reason as well: Ellis attempted to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974, in an effort to prove a point to teammates. Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis’s attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis’s box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.

There are many spiritual gurus and religious groups in this world who promise to show you the path to salvation . When you are experiencing a ‘ down ‘ period in your life it is easy to be tempted by their talk of a utopia , which can be achieved if you follow their path and teachings , and if you only do what they say , you will be saved . An awful lot of gurus talk a load of tripe and many people come out far worse than when they went in . History is littered with cults which have come to a bloody end eg  Heavens Gate , Waco , the Manson family and the Order of the Solar Temple . The early Christians , for their time , would have been considered a cult and many ended up being fed to the lions or dying some equally gruesome death . Fortunately , most experiences with gurus are not so dramatic but they can still be a negative experience and leave many traumatised and disillusioned . From my own observations ( I have never had a guru ) there are tell-tale signs and common practices which indicate it would be wise to steer well clear of them and I now give you ‘ 10 Things to Avoid in a Guru ‘ . It may save you a lot of wasted time , trouble and grief .

Money

They want your money and lots of it . It is no coincidence that in most countries , the established religion will be one of the richest organisations . On a smaller scale , the guru will demand your money with the excuse it is for the group . However , he ( it is normally a he ) will be the one in charge of the money and tend to be very defensive against charges of financial irregularity. One scam is to agree to participate in some sort of spiritual practice eg sweat shop or yoga course in some exotic location and find you are charged a huge sum of money for the benefit . You may be persuaded it is necessary for your spiritual evolution or well being . Another trick is to extract a certain percentage of your salary , which is credited to the group or leader . This money always goes one way . When you are in need , you will discover that there is a shortage of cash and they will be unable to help you out .

Accountants and fast cars

Avoid a spiritual guru if they spend more time on phone calls and meetings with accountants and bank managers than they do on their spiritual work .Ferraris and Rolls Royces are another indicator, things aren’t as they should be . Compare the financial situation between those at the top and their followers . If there is a big discrepancy, run away as fast as you can .

Love bombing

If you are in a down period , you may feel unloved and unwanted . Love bombing is a major technique to recruit followers and the attention and promises of love that are initially received, may convince some to join the group as the negative feelings are replaced with a sense of belonging . At first , it will seem genuine but you will find that it is just a strategy to lure unsuspecting victims into the lair, like an insect caught in a Venus Fly Trap . It is not normal to shower people with love the first time you meet them .

Paranoia

Many cults have a sense of paranoia against the outside world . They teach the world is a dangerous and threatening place , which wishes to destroy them and the only safe place is within the group . The leader will convince his followers that he is their saviour and can protect them from the bogeymen in the outside world . Any guru who uses paranoid teachings should be avoided like the plague .

Dogma

Many gurus are only able to talk in ‘ spiritual ‘ speak . They will  use phrases such as Infinite conciousness and Transcendence a lot in their teachings . They may also tend to refer to scriptures when answering questions and take these writings literally . This is common with the Bible, Koran and the Torah. It is unadvisable to get involved with fundamentalists of any kind , as not only does it point to a closed mind , it normally means the guru does not have the intelligence to think for themselves and does not understand what he is preaching .

” I say you are the Messiah . I should know I’ve followed a few .”

Isolation

You may be persuaded to drop your friends and families , as enemies of your spiritual development , and that the group is your family now and the leader is your father . It is actually quite common in genuine spiritual growth to experience isolation , but that is by choice . Some gurus , use guilt extensively as a method to control their followers and may try to convince them that they are hurting the group by socialising with outsiders . Isolation can also be used within the group as punishment .

Drugs

Keep away from anyone who tells you narcotic drugs can be used as part of a spiritual experience and you need them for your growth . One thing the last fifty or so years have taught us is that drugs only harm the body and mind . I know many say they have had a  ’spiritual experience ‘ through LSD or Magic Mushrooms but I am not convinced they have any value . The many tragic cases of young people who have misused drugs would suggest something else . Life is a spiritual experience and you don’t need drugs to live your life .

Sex

Many gurus use sex to control their followers . The chosen will be seen as favourites of the leader and will become Queen Bee . The women will compete amongst themselves to gain the sexual favour of the guru and it can be used as a means of Divide and Rule within a group . Another favourite trick , concocted by men , is to convince his female acolytes that ‘ sex magic ‘ is a path to enlightenment – this is just a ruse to have sex .Keep well away from any group , who have promiscuous relationships within it . It always ends in disaster .

Meditation

Avoid gurus who propose excessive meditation , chanting of mantras or long periods of silence . All these practices will make you suggestible and more easily manipulated . They close down your logical mind and open your unconcious mind , which is trusting and will believe what it is told . Many ‘ teachers ‘ seem to pooh-pooh the concious , rational mind  but it is actually your best friend . Many people , who meditate excessively , seem to be on another planet and drugged out .

Diet

Many cult leaders have used near starvation diets as means of control . It weakens your body and mind , and appears to make people more suggestible to manipulation. A brief period of fasting as at Ramadan will do no harm but a long term meagre diet will have a lasting negative effect on you . I would also avoid spiritual practices , which propose a vegetarian diet or low fat protein diet , unless it was your own choice . If you do not have a choice in your diet , it is a sign that the guru is more intersted in control than your spiritual growth .

That’s my ‘10 Things to Avoid in a Guru’ and I am sure you could add to this list . The danger is in letting others control your growth . All the answers  lie within but teachers are needed and choosing the wrong guru can be disastrous .

Since the 1980’s, the government and media have warned the American people about the dangers of drugs like cocaine, heroine and LSD.  The Reagan administration even went so far as to call the anti-drug crusade the “War on Drugs.”

Hard drugs like crack, PCP, and methamphetamines are dangerous, not to mention morally wrong.   However, I believe that all drugs should be legal because the collateral damage from anti-drug legislation does as much or more damage than the drugs themselves.

According to the United States Department of Justice one out of every fifteen U.S. citizens will serve time in a state or federal prison at some time in their life.

The problem is even more appalling among men and minority communities.  A 2000 study by the Department of Justice estimates that 18% of all African Americans, over 11% of all men, 32% of all black men and 17% of all Hispanic men will serve prison time.  Of the 1.3 million American citizens these numbers represent, 21% of state and 57% of federal inmates are serving time for a drug offense.

There are two major flaws in the reasoning behind the war on drugs.  First, people assume that harsh penalties will deter young people from becoming involved in the drug trade – the opposite is true.  Second is the assumption that eliminating drug dealers eliminates drugs.  In actuality it simply creates a job opening.

Many drug dealers sell drugs, often on a smaller scale, for the first time as a young child.  As anyone with children will tell you deterrents are at best only partially effective on young people.  Children have no concept of time and no concept of their own limitations.  They also rarely understand the long term consequences of their decisions; that is what parents are for.

These kids may only make a couple hundred dollars a week selling drugs, but ask any thirteen year-old to choose between doing their homework or making $300 and see what they say.  While a rational adult may see that those couple hundred dollars aren’t worth sacrificing an education, for that child, especially a poor child, school takes on a less important role.

By the time many of these kids are seventeen year old crack dealers they’ve been selling drugs for the better part of a decade, have little in the way of an academic knowledge base, and still are too young to be expected to understand the consequences of their actions.

It is ludicrous for our society to expect a poor teenager, let alone a young child, to be deterred by the long-term disadvantages of dealing drugs especially with cocaine priced at between $12,000 and $35,000 per kilo, according to a study by the DEA.  It’s equally unrealistic to expect a teenager with no options to give that kind of lifestyle – one in which they may make as much money as a doctor or lawyer – up for a job at Burger King.

The idea that putting dealers behind bars will stem demand is even sillier.  Nobody stops using drugs because their favorite drug dealer has been locked away; they just go to someone else.  Drug addiction is much too powerful to be stopped by inconvenience, as are the underlying issues that lead to drug use in the first place.  The only way to rid ourselves of the problem is to study and treat drug users.

By outlawing drugs, we’ve simultaneously fueled gang violence, driven prices down, increased production and created and unregulated black market for the banned substances.  It is no coincidence that gang violence surged to unprecedented heights in the eighties and nineties as crack became king of the American underbelly, nor should this link surprise anyone.

The key to understanding why the war on drugs has failed is simple economics.  In a free market economy, which is what we’re talking about in its most pure form, competition drives price down and quality and convenience up.
That is why, according to a report by Mary Cooper, drugs are more pure, cheaper, and easier to find than ever.  It’s also why more drugs are being cut with Drain-o and rat poisoning – drug dealers need to cut costs.

Competition also causes is conflict.  People fight most ferociously when something tangible is at stake.  Pride or respect may be the focus of romanticized Hollywood movies on the subject, but money transformed the American gangbanger from neighborhood ruffian into cold-blooded killer.

The lack of regulation, however, has been equally important and has had equally tragic results.  Overdoses kill thousands of people each year.  If drugs were legal, purity could be regulated and drugs would be cut with benign substances people would have a better idea for how much they were taking and overdoses would become far less common.

Luckily, the problems caused by the war on drugs can be fixed fairly easily: by legalizing, commercializing, and regulating all drugs.  Many of the proposed changes, especially those related to marijuana, are similar to policies regarding alcohol.

I propose that marijuana use be restricted to adults aged eighteen and older and that hard drugs be restricted to those twenty-one and older.  Furthermore, it should be illegal to use marijuana outside of one’s own residence and specially-designated clubs as the smoke may cause others to become intoxicated.

While marijuana may be treated in much the same way as alcohol, it is actually less dangerous and much less addictive, hard drugs are an entirely different animal.  Drugs like crack and heroine are dangerous, overdoses often result in death, and they are very addictive.

Commission of any crime while under the influence of hard drugs should result in a significant extension of the normal sentence.  The amount of time added should be doubled in the event of a serious violent crime like murder, rape, attempted murder, or any crime involving the use of a deadly weapon.

Overdoses would be greatly reduced by rating (and restricting) the purity of drugs and this information would be clearly indicated on whatever container is used for public distribution.  Limitations as to what drugs may or may not be cut with would serve to further protect the public.

Heavy taxes and difficult-to-obtain distribution licenses (for hard drugs) would facilitate a swift takeover by large corporations or government-owned monopolies.  This would eliminate small distributors and, therefore, allow for strict government and quality control.

Our country would also reap the benefits of what Cooper estimates as a 400 billion dollar industry which, given time, could be entirely home grown.

In addition to the enormous new revenue stream provided by taxing that industry, our government could less on prisons ($20,000 per inmate per year), law enforcement – 17.8 billion per year according to Cooper’s study, and court costs – 621,000 jail inmates in 2000, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

With nothing tangible to fight about, gang violence should decline steadily and police would be allowed to focus on enforcing other areas of the law (Murder, Rape, Home Invasion, etc.) rather than wasting their time and our money making drug busts (job openings).

More importantly, without a field of work promising fast money with little or no education or experience, more young people could focus on school and achieve their vast potential.

Since the 1980’s the government and popular media have done everything in their power to sell us on the benefits of the “War on Drugs.”  I’ve probably heard a thousand accounts of how drugs ruined an addict’s life, or how a young child was caught in the crossfire of a local gang war.

What I have not heard, unfortunately, is how the war on drugs has aggravated and, in some cases, created peripheral problems like gang violence and drug overdoses.

The war on drugs has created a “career” requiring no experience, education, and with no age limits; where it’s possible to make tens of thousands of dollars in a matter of weeks; one that often ends in prison or worse.  By legalizing drugs, I seek only to eliminate the temptation caused by the drug trade.

Legalizing drugs will not eradicate drug use, but it will greatly reduce peripheral problems like drug overdoses, gang violence, crowded prisons, and the damage done to drug dealers.  If we cannot prevent people from using drugs (we can’t), the least we can do is limit the collateral damage.

Wow. I can’t believe someone would make a video like this to teach our children why LSD is awesome how to play tee-ball. I’m pretty sure this is how my golf coach taught us to play golf in high school for the team, except there was no one shooting us with a camera, and then animating what we thought we saw.

In other news, the LPGA tour has an event in Houston that starts today. The Chronicle has listed their players to watch. Apparently, they use a different criteria than I did when I gave you my players to watch.  I would give you more details, but I think we all have better things to do like go to work, watch internet porn, play the awesome to Super Mario Bros. Wii game that came out Tuesday… etc.

However, I will say that I am kinda disappointed that Michelle Wie got her first LPGA victory last weekend. She’s no longer hot now, because really the only thing she had going for her was that you thought she would fail out of golf and become attainable to the average guy.  I had kinda planned on her flaming out in the LPGA, then having a mental breakdown like Britney or Lindsay Lohan, leaving the door open for me to bang her even though she didn’t make my list of LPGA golfers. I can say that right, I think she’s finally  legal now.
