As we slump over our cornflakes browsing a “newspaper” in the future (my bet is it keeps

As we slump over our cornflakes browsing a “newspaper” in the future (my bet is it keeps the term in the same way “video” has), how will it be reaching us? On our mobile device via 3G data? Using a Wifi connection? Or with a new adaptation: 4G, WiMAX, or even LTE?

Today WiMAX and LTE (Long Term Evolution) technologies are commonly spoken of with the same sweeping breadth as the digital coverage it hopes to attain. So it can be tricky to get a definitive handle on precisely what they are, how they’re being used and what we hope to achieve with them.

This was what I hoped to address by attending Wednesday’s WiMAX event at City University, London.

Jointly hosted by the MDA and the DCKTN (Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Network), the line-up included a number of speakers who have been working at the coalface of these technologies for a number of years. Their full presentations can be accessed via the secure members area of the MDA site.

WiMAX Network Operator, Freedom4 opened with a number-heavy discussion of today’s 4G network and how it impacts the speed of CDMA and OFDMA data transmission through Mobile WiMAX, IMT-Advanced and LTE, amongst other media.

Graham Currier described WiMAX as a purpose designed high capacity mobile data access technology, taking advantage of Internet Protocol network scaling, flexibility and low cost.

Graham MacDonald of Intel, who make the enviable claim of being The World’s Largest Semiconductor Manufacturer, outlined the global WiMAX ecosystem.

With eleven globally dispersed Test Sites, Intel is supporting ubiquitous broadband coverage with a preference for today’s 4G, because LTE is not commercially available and won’t be for another two to three years.

Around 500 WiMAX trials and commercial deployments are currently in place across 141 countries in the world, whereas there are no LTE commercial deployments at all.

Spectrum, Intel believe, is the true enabler of a wireless broadband world.

Milton Keynes Council assigned Connect MK with the mission to raise active broadband use from 60-65% in 2007 to over 90% by 2010/11 through broadly enabling access to PCs and broadband. Adepteq, the company behind Connect MK, persuaded Microsoft to produce a Social Software Licensing Model which has led to PCs being loaded with a fully licensed operating system and loaned out at £1.50 per week. Freedom4’s widespread WiMAX solutions enable the service’s users generous connectivity.

Next up, WiMAX network operator, Airspan – a founding member of the WiMAX forum, explained how WiMAX might not be perceived as a 4G technology. And how you might argue that nothing is. It extolled the virtues of next generation technologies converging and accommodating both data and voice services for the masses.

How? Obviously by using Airspan’s cutting edge products.. Its smart applications included machine-to-machine communications, which will become increasingly topical with the approaching smart metering juggernaut, and embedding WiMAX inside devices such as cameras and Sat-Navs.

While the level of audience interaction, extended debate and conjecture was encouraging for the space, it also suggested many competing viewpoints in a space where assertive direction is needed for significantly progressive infrastructure.

Nobody really knows how these technologies and robust infrastructures will develop in the coming years, or how much cash is available to develop them. Or how much of a priority they really are. I left the event with more questions than answers.

- Will the development of voice technologies through LTE have the edge over data and WiMAX?
- Can WiMAX pilot projects encouraging digital social inclusion in marginalised areas, be transposed into larger cities?
- Or do they benefit from more flexible infrastructures allowed by unique, arguably anomalous locations such as the UK’s new town, Milton Keynes?
- Is consumer WiMAX more of an immediately compelling proposition for remote towns and islands than it is for large cities?

These were slightly narrower questions than those which I entered with: the sign of an informative and engaging event.

Today NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile operator, affirmed its plans to deploy LTE in 2010; it also said it would shut off its 2G network in March 2011 since most subscribers now have 3G phones. NTT DoCoMo had previously said it would keep the 2G network running until December 2012. Speaking at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress 2009, Ryuji Yamada, president and CEO of NTT DoCoMo, said LTE data cards will be ready in 2010 and handsets will be ready in 2011.

Singapore Telecommunications, the largest carrier in Singapore with operations in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, also disclosed plans for LTE trials. SingTel has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (s alu) as its equipment vendor for the trials, which will begin in the first half of 2010 and take anywhere from six to nine months. The network operator hopes the trial will help it and its regional associates and joint ventures better understand LTE and determine the best approach and strategy for its adoption in their respective local markets. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., we await Verizon’s (s vz) and MetroPCS’ (s pcs) 2010 deployments, with netbooks and smartphones in hand.

Users of Android phones can get the client software from the Android Market or from Fring’s WAP site.

Fring for Android works over 3G, GPRS or Wi-Fi connections. According to the company’s blog announcement:

“Android device users can now get onto fring (we know you’ve been missing us since some of you recently switched to Android devices) with (the first) free VoIP calls over Skype, MSN and GoogleTalk and via hundreds of SIP providers. As always you can see real-time presence and live chat with your ICQ, Yahoo! And AIM buddies too. You can also use Twitter there, as part of your integrated contact list.”

The “we know you’ve been missing us” snippet in the announcement belongs there, as competitive applications such as Nimbuzz have already been available for Android for some time. Still, free VoIP calls over Skype with Fring will probably be pretty attractive to many users of Android phones, and Fring offers a number of options for keeping up with Twitter.

With LTE networks fast on their way, it’s no surprise to hear that Motorola has a TD-LTE USB adapter in the works. In an announcement out today about the upcoming World Expo 2010 in Shanghai China, Motorola threw in a note that it will launch the world’s first TD-LTE USB dongle at the show. The dongle/adapter will support both 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands, and will be on hand for demonstrations of high-bandwidth video streaming at the event.

I have no images of the LTE USB adapter yet, so I dug into the archives for photos of the in-progress WiMAX USB adapter. Below on the left is an early prototype, followed by a photo of the version I have today, followed by a pic of the next-gen product due out this quarter.

As a reminder of Motorola’s ongoing LTE work, here are some recent milestones and points of interest for context:

Motorola demonstrated the first over-the-air LTE transmission in the 700 MHz frequency band last year

Motorola demonstrated the first ever live TV broadcast over an LTE network in August

Motorola has an end-to-end TD-LTE solution that includes its award-winning evolved packet core (EPC including MME and GW) and radio access network (RAN), as well as user equipment (UE)

Motorola is the first company in the industry to achieve optimal peak throughput for TD-LTE in both lab and field environments

Motorola is engaged with several global tier-one operators on TD-LTE trials starting in Q4 2009

You can change the “Default Search Provider” through the Browser \ Options \ Browser Configuration. To change this to search Bing.com you need to specify ‘Live Search’. There is an RIM request in place to have the handheld code change Live Search to Bing.com with the correct display icon and this change is currently targeted for later in 5.0 handheld. Unfortunately, there are not any IT policies or other BES side setting which could be used to make this change on all devices.

The bad news v5 for Bold hasn’t a solid ETA, so could be a few weeks or months.

4. How Can I Quickly Delete 800 Messages from my BB?

On most newer BB devices, you can scroll to the top, hit the menu button, and select “delete prior”, but be careful it doesn’t sync the delete unexpectedly to Outlook (BB > messages > options > email reconciliation > delete on = handheld).

Google’s Android OS-based phones and Apple’s iPhone maybe get all the media love, but one analyst firm believes that it will be RIM’s BlackBerry that will be the smartphone king of the U.S. market in five years. Pyramid Research expects the device to be the biggest beneficiary of the move to smartphones.GigaOm

Research in Motion has expanded its alliance with Adobe as well as made it easier for developers to insert ads into their applications for BlackBerry smartphones, RIM said.
BlackBerry App World will see carrier billing by 2010. Carrier billing would make it easier for BlackBerry customers to purchase applications on their phones. As it stands, BlackBerry users have to enter PayPal credentials, which some say inhibits spontaneous purchases. Wireless Week

T-Mobile USA, the 4th largest U.S. wireless carrier, is well behind the Big 2 (Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility) as well as Sprint in number of subscribers and evidently that isn’t going to sit well with Duetsche Telekom, T-Mobile’s parent company.

The carrier has announced plans to go big with their 3G network, in an effort to close the technology gap with its rivals. T-Mobile will enable 7.2Mbps HSPA data speeds on its entire 3G network, which is also planned to expand to reach 200 million people, by the end of 2009. And, by the middle of 2010, T-Mobile expects to have 21Mbps HSPA+ data speeds across its entire 3G network. That’s some high-speed data!

With Verizon looking to launch their 4G LTE wireless network in early 2010, and Sprint pushing to roll out its nationwide 4G WiMAX network, via Clearwire, T-Mobile doesn’t want to fall too far behind. T-Mobile has a sizeable customer base using data plans which are the money makers, making a competitive 3G Network all that much more important.

For now, only Philadelphia gets to enjoy T-Mobile’s blazing fast 21Mbps HSPA+ network, so if you live/work or are travelling to the ‘City of Brotherly Love’, you will be very happy on T-Mobile’s network.

However, those doubling down on WiMAX (see chart) as the ideal fourth-generation wireless technology are likely throwing good money after bad. Even if we ignore the incredible writedowns these companies have had to make related to their first bet on Clearwire and WiMAX, the potential for return on the latest investment is still low. Why? Because Clearwire’s Clear service is stuck between a rock and hard place.

The Rock

Knowing that mobile broadband demand will continue to skyrocket, both Sprint (s s) and Clearwire elected to build out WiMAX-based networks under the assumption that they could roll out nationwide mobile broadband before the cellular carriers could. But given that Verizon (s vz) plans to cover 100 million people with a 4G Long Term Evolution network by the end of 2010 with AT&T (s t) to follow two years later, the WiMAX experience for many will be weighed against the cellular experience. And Clearwire can’t provide LTE for two more years, even it if wanted to. To compete, Clearwire, the cable providers reselling the service, and Sprint will have to create compelling packages and services that the cellular providers aren’t offering.

People can debate the propagation qualities of the WiMAX spectrum, but for the average person choosing a mobile broadband provider, the services and the devices will be the selling point, not the network. Right now, Clearwire and crew are selling basic broadband with relatively few devices. And the larger strategy of providing connectivity to devices like e-readers is pretty risky given that WiMAX isn’t available nationwide. Sprint even lost out on providing mobile broadband for the Amazon (s amzn) Kindle recently when the e-reader went international. Amazon is instead using AT&T, which has a GSM network and arrangements to ensure the e-reader works around the world. When it comes to device connectivity, global standards and large coverage areas win.

The Hard Place

With Clearwire fighting the cellular carriers to provide true mobile broadband connectivity for consumer data plans and for M2M deals, some believe it has an opportunity to provide local mobile broadband for folks who want to travel in their towns, but aren’t real road warriors going from city to city. This is a fairly compelling case as it doesn’t require total nationwide coverage, and Comcast, which has begun to offer WiMAX subscriptions as part of its service bundles, has seen strong interest from consumers. But Clearwire faces strong competition in this market from Wi-Fi.

Both AT&T and Verizon offer their customers free Wi-Fi for subscribers of their high-speed Internet services. Those with cable subscriptions may also have access to free Wi-Fi, and for those that don’t, there are plenty of sponsored hotspots and just a few hoops to jump through at places like your local Starbucks. If you’re going to be lugging your laptop around (and so far, that’s what most WiMAX modems are aimed at), you might as well find a place with Wi-Fi.

Of course, for some people, WiMAX will be a credible option, possibly as a replacement for wired access (although I’m not excited about that opportunity). My husband, for example, is eager to see how well it works in Austin (coming in mid-November) as he can’t get DSL or cable service at his office, and existing cellular speeds are lousy. Clearwire is also part of an agreement attempting to use WiMAX as the network for utilities’ smart grids, although how Clearwire would monetize that is uncertain. However, given the billions it’s costing Clearwire and its backers to build out its network, I’m not sure the space between the rock and the hard place is large enough for a multibillion-dollar company to thrive.

Eure Meinung interessiert mich!

LTE (Long Term Evolution) network technology connected to a car.

Imagine a wireless powerful network protocol that permits data downloads transfer rates of 100 Mbps, and an uplink of at least 50 Mbps and RAN round-trip times of less than 10ms, connected to YOUR CAR! Welcome to the “4th generation (4G) of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks”.

Imagine all the apps that you can use and access on the WEB while you are on your car. This is what QNX Software Systems and Alcatel-Lucent are trying to achieve with their prototype, Toyota Prius.

Just see the video for a brief demonstration and explanation about what this is all about. Enjoy!

Persaingan Tarif Komunikasi Data semakin sengit Antar Operator. Terutama Telkomsel, Indosat, dan XL . Indosat pun karena tidak mau kehilangan pelanggan akhirnya menambah kuota lebar frekuensi dan sudah melakukan uji coba LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G (kira2 up to 21Mbps) dan akan selesai implementasi dalam beberapa tahun kedepan
–informasi dari senior nya rhe–

Sebenarnya sudah lama mau posting tentang 3G dan Jaringan2nya. Maklum baru abis beli modem murah meriah. hehehe

INDOSAT M2 : GPRS –> gak worth it … kenapa ? tiap bulan bayar 200 rb buat HSDPA tapi yang kepake cm gprs
XL Unlimited : UMTS dan EDGE –> worth it 150 rb/bulan . Jaringannya luas n kuat di Lombok

Tapi kalau Bandung Coret
INDOSAT M2 : WCDMA –> worth it dah bayar 200rb. Lha download ratusan mega cm 3 jam
XL unlimited : GPRS –> gak worth it bayar 150 rb
Telkomsel Flash : belum dicoba

Jadi meskipun modem Anda tertulis 3,5 Mbps belum tentu Anda dapat 3,5Mbps karena tergantung lokasi Anda.

Im not Angel Either Demon.

By Anton Wahlman 11/04/09 – 11:46 AM EST – The Street.com All the talk about Apple

By Anton Wahlman 11/04/09 – 11:46 AM EST – The Street.com

All the talk about Apple’s(AAPL Quote) next U.S. iPhone carrier once the AT&T(T Quote) exclusivity expires appears focused on Verizon Wireless(VZ Quote).
There are some good reasons for this: VZW has the reputation of having the best network, partially for its consistency in CDMA/EVDO in combination with its 850 MHz band. With 89 million wireless customers, VZW is 9% larger than AT&T’s 82 million wireless subscribers.
Before I get into my argument, I need to make the point that I don’t know when AT&T’s U.S. iPhone exclusivity ends. All indication is that it will take place no earlier than 2010, but no later than 2012. But really nobody outside Apple and AT&T knows.
Perhaps AT&T will pay for an extension to whatever the current or recent data were supposed to have been. And the rest of my argument is somewhat dependent on when this eventually takes place.
Let’s assume that the AT&T exclusivity ends relatively soon, say June 2010. Apple would then have the choice to spread the iPhone to all U.S. carriers, or only some. Which one would be Apple’s highest priority?
My contention is that it is in Apple’s best interest to make Sprint(S Quote)/Clearwire(CLWR Quote) its highest priority, if it could do so relatively soon, say by mid-2010.
The common suggestion that Apple should go with VZW is misguided: It’s not that Apple needs VZW. It’s that any carrier needs the iPhone. From this perspective, it can be said that it is the iPhone that makes any carrier. So therefore, the critical question becomes: What does Apple get out of the deal? It doesn’t matter what the carrier gets out of the deal, because all carriers will take the deal.
Apple enjoys superior popularity with the iPhone today, but what will it need to do in order to lift the bar on keeping the iPhone “special?” Seeing as all the three main networks outside AT&T — Sprint, VZW and T-Mobile — offer service to the vast majority of U.S. households, the only remaining argument of greatest importance to Apple is technology.
What can Apple offer in terms of technology that would be truly special and differentiating? That’s the question — not how many legacy subscribers does a carrier have. People will follow Apple’s lead; Apple doesn’t need to follow the crowd, i.e., VZW’s legacy customers.
Based on this premise of Apple’s need to make technology its chief variable in selecting its next U.S. carrier partner, I believe the obvious answer is for Apple to make an iPhone for Sprint/Clearwire. Sprint owns approximately 50% of Clearwire, and the Sprint/Clearwire is a necessary combination because of backwards compatibility with EVDO.
Clearwire chose to build its nationwide 2.5-2.7 GHz network on the WiMax standard, which offers far greater speeds than any 3G technology such as EVDO. Clearwire’s almost 200 MHz spectrum means that its capacity to support many users downloading/uploading data is vastly superior to all the other incumbent cellular providers.
What should be Apple’s two most important goals with the iPhone working on a new network? capacity and latency:
 Capacity: From downloading ever-richer applications to video/television/movies, Apple needs to demonstrate that its iPhone platform can deliver more bandwidth-intensive services than competitive devices.
 Latency: This is critical for real-time communications such as voice and videoconferencing. VoIP services on smartphones are just starting now, but are suffering from generally poor quality as a result of unacceptable latency on today’s HSPA and EVDO networks from AT&T, VZW and T-Mobile USA.
If these are the highest priorities for Apple, VZW doesn’t give Apple what it needs until LTE makes its advent in handsets. Qualcomm(QCOM Quote) has stated that it expects to sample its “God-chip” — the 8960 — in mid-2010. This is the LTE chip with full backwards compatibility to all GSM and CDMA lineages such as HSPA and EVDO.
That in turn means that LTE handsets with backwards compatibility can be launched around the middle of 2011. Budget one year’s worth of technology/standards slippage, and we can realistically expect backwards-compatible LTE handsets to become mainstream around the middle of 2012.
What does this mean for Apple? VZW will not offer Apple a technology to differentiate itself against the competition until mid-2011 at the earliest, perhaps mid-2012. But Sprint/Clearwire does, already today!
Therefore, if the AT&T iPhone exclusivity ends meaningfully before mid-2011, Apple would be best served to launch its next version of the iPhone on Sprint/Clearwire.
Imagine the superior services a Sprint/Clearwire WiMax iPhone could offer: Flawless low-latency VoIP, liberating the consumer from traditional voice plans, videoconferencing, streaming television and laptop tethering without that pesky 5GB monthly cap. All of these things are either impossible or performed with subpar quality on AT&T today, and on VZW before it can offer backwards-compatible LTE handsets no earlier than mid-2011.
Sprint/Clearwire is already working with HTC to launch dual-mode WiMax/EVDO Google(GOOG Quote). Android handsets in coming months. All of these advantages of WiMax performance in the cellular handset will soon be pointing their big guns full ablaze against the iPhone.
4G networks — WiMax and LTE — are nuclear weapons in the hands of operators fighting an escalating war for the next-generation services: VoIP and videoconferencing. Sprint/Clearwire will detonate the first bomb in this competitive quest in 2010, using the Android platform. If Apple has the ability to join the party, it needs to do so quickly, instead of following the popular suggestion of joining VZW’s me-too EVDO network.
Final clarification: When the AT&T iPhone exclusivity ends, Apple may simply be able to launch the iPhone on all carriers, using all the applicable radio standards in different versions: WiMax, LTE, and 1.7 GHz HSPA+.
But if it chooses only one carrier — for whichever reason — and can do so meaningfully before backwards-compatible LTE handset chips become available, it needs to take advantage of Sprint/Clearwire’s WiMax network in order to not slip behind competitors such as Android and potentially others such as Palm/WebOS and Research In Motion(RIMM Quote). /Blackberry
