@WIRED Automobiles will soon be linking up with servers in the cloud to enable everything from crowd

@WIRED
Automobiles will soon be linking up with servers in the cloud to enable everything from crowdsourced pothole detection, personalized radio stations, video selections that include YouTube and even video streams from the front windows of other cars.

Think of it as Dashboard 2.0.

A consortium of tech companies called ng Connect showed off a functional concept version of a Toyota Prius on Tuesday that includes multiple LCD screens, an app platform similar to the one for the iPhone, and a high speed LTE internet connection that promises to make 3G feel like dial-up. The set-up turns the car into a Wi-Fi hot spot, plays movies on demand, and lets passengers frag each other in multi-player games.

The LTE connection is fast enough to stream four high-definition movies to four different screens in a single car, according to Alcatel-Lucent vice president Derek Kuhn. While still a telecom dream, LTE is backwards-compatible with today’s 3G networks. It also relies on a single standard, which will hopefully make nationwide rollout cheaper and faster than 3G has been.

ng Connect is comprised of a motley crew of tech companies: the networking company Alcatel-Lucent, Atlantic Records, QNX Software Systems, Toyota, geek gadget company chumby and Kabillion. Their LTE Connected Car project is only a prototype now, but the group expects its technology to roll out within the next two to three years.

ng Connect’s system leverages two major trends — cloud computing and mobile applications – to provide safety, navigation, and entertainment features that already go a long way towards justifying its “next-generation” moniker.

The high-bandwidth connection enables processor-intensive applications like voice recognition — a crucial safety feature in gadget-ridden cars — to happen on the server side, where voice commands can be processed more efficiently. And that’s just the beginning of what cloud computing will do for drivers, according to the ng Connect group.

“This car also is a sensor,” explained Kuhn. For instance, if your car’s temperature and moisture sensors determine that the surface temperature of the road is below freezing and that the road is wet, it can upload that information into the cloud so that the drivers behind you know to take it a little easier around the turns. It’s like a crowdsourced version of what traffic helicopters do today.

Entertainment-wise, the system offers Pandora’s personalized streaming radio, Atlantic Records’ apps that pull in an artist’s latest tweets and songs, YouTube and a movie streaming service that remembers where each viewer left off. Future applications could even use the vehicle’s moisture sensor to suggest that you play Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet, according to Kuhn.

Lest you worry about drivers being distracted, the system cuts off the entertainment stream to the driver’s monitor as soon as the car is in motion.

A camera embedded in the rearview mirror captures the road ahead, letting you pipe a video stream to the cloud. This will let you see the view from a connected car a quarter-mile ahead of you, so you can find out what’s causing that traffic jam up ahead. The system can also sense that traffic is becoming more compressed, warning you to slow down before you encounter a traffic compression.

Of course, America’s love affair with the car has a lot to do with freedom, and some could bristle about this sort of connectivity compromising their privacy.

“Let’s be open, there are privacy issues,” said Kuhn. “But we think we can abstract it enough that it’s not Dan driving.”

“It’s a nameless entity, right?” added Dan Dodge, president and CEO of QNX software, which developed the Flash Lite-based platform used by the system, who was seated in the driver’s seat for our demonstration. “It’s an identifier that would change every time you get into your car. It’s randomly assigned and has no idea who you are – it’s just a moving dot, and that’s key.”

However, Dodge added, applications that need to know who you are, such as Pandora, can do so without broadcasting any personally-identifying information to the cloud.

“The other exciting thing about this is municipalities,” said Dodge. “If your car hits a pothole, you can have a real-time signal go back to the municipality and they can see potholes appearing in real-time and send out a truck.” (Or start ignoring them as soon as possible, as the case may be.)

The losers in all of this: satellite navigation and radio. They appear to have about three years, tops, before personalized applications and cloud computing make them look as outdated as black-and-white television.

“Once you assume constant connectivity, the whole mindset changes of where you partition what’s in the car and what’s out in the cloud,” said Dodge. “Other than this nice, rich touch screen, a lot of the computing power has been moved onto the cloud, so the car of the future may be physically cheaper to build.”

Price will likely be a crucial factor in the success of this and other connected car platforms. ng Connect chose the Prius rather than a luxury model because research indicated that the segment of the population most interested in connected cars with advanced features is not the same that buys high-end luxury models. Rather, it’s young families and older singles who see connected electronics as a necessity.

The recent Federal Circuit decision Lucent v. Gateway is most notable for the Federal Circuit’

The recent Federal Circuit decision Lucent v. Gateway is most notable for the Federal Circuit’s treatment of the entire market value rule and other damages issues, vacating the jury’s damages award but affirming the verdict on issues of infringement and invalidity. Microsoft has just filed a petition for an en banc ruling on whether there should be a presumption of validity for patents under prior art that was never before the PTO, and therefore whether such the clear and convincing evidence standard should apply. The Lucent v. Gateway case is in a particularly useful posture for this inquiry because the claims of the asserted patent were rejected by the PTO in a parallel reexamination proceeding. Unlike in litigation, the PTO does not accord a presumption of validity when examining the validity of claims under prior art not previously submitted. Instead of the clear and convincing evidence standard, the PTO determines validity under the lower preponderance of the evidence standard, the standard Microsoft submits should be adopted in federal litigation when dealing with prior art that was never before the PTO. The Federal Cicuit’s panel ruling affirmed the jury’s verdict applying the clear and convincing evidence standard and did not address the issue of which standard to apply.

Inventive Step has made posted the en banc request here.

Microsoft argues that prior to the creation of the Federal Circuit several circuits applied the lower standard for art not that was never before the PTO, and thus the rule is one created by the Federal Circuit that should no longer apply under the Supreme Court’s KSR v. Teleflex ruling. The Court in KSR stated that “the rationale underlying the presumption [of validity]-that the PTO, in its expertise, has approved the claim-seems much diminished where the claim of obviousness is based on prior art that was never before the PTO,” (550 U.S.at 426) giving rise to speculation that the presumption may no longer apply in such situations.

fiiuhhh…tantangan lagi. Hari ini progres implementasi PE IP MPLS kaknya bakalan tertunda.

Capture Problem

Update 20 Oct 2009

Alhamdulillah problem dah solve. Tau ga kenapa??

N then masalah yang kedua.

Progres pun dilanjut kemaren sore samapi tadi subuh. qeqeqe…maaf ya ALU team, mesti lembur malem2. Tapi alhamdulillah, semua problem dah solve sekarang. GO ICON+….

From the folks at Lucent, a nostalgic music video celebrating the contributions of Bell Labs–

From the folks at Lucent, a nostalgic music video celebrating the contributions of Bell Labs– a facility unique in America history. The nation’s premier research facility for several decades, it was the hatching ground of radio astronomy, the transistor, the laser, information theory, the UNIX operating system, and the C programming language; work completed there earned six Nobel Prizes.

With the breakup of ATT in 1984, stewardship of the Lab passed to Lucent, and the role of Lab began to change. By August of 2008, Alcatel-Lucent announced that it was puling out of basic research altogether, to focus exclusively on more immediately marketable applications; the Bell Labs celebrated in the video is gone.

But its gifts to knowledge and society survive. Indeed, it’s surely fair to observe that, without work done there, it wouldn’t be possible to for your correspondent to be pelting readers with daily missives via the internet.

As we listen to the background noise of the universe (for the discovery of which, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of Bell Labs won the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics), we might take a celebratory trip in honor of Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian explorer and anthropologist who became famous for his Kon-Tiki Expedition in 1947 (though he went on many others as well); he was born on this date in 1914… He once responded to an interviewer, “Borders? I have never seen one. But I have heard they exist in the minds of most people.”

After 100 plus years as Canada’s Premier Telecommunication powerhouse, Nortel is de-listing fr

After 100 plus years as Canada’s Premier Telecommunication powerhouse, Nortel is de-listing from the TSX and is quietly liquidating itself. Sadly, the world’s economic woes has tied the Canadian Government’s hands and Nortel could not be saved. In the past, Canada has clung to Nortel like the US clings to GM.

Unfortunately, Nortel is a case study in poor management, poor execution, and a failed acquisition strategy. How does a company that purchased the likes of Bay Networks, Shasta Networks, and Alteon WebSystems, Inc. fail? Nortel reads like the novel Moby Dick as they perpetually chased Cisco, Ericsson, Lucent, and others to no avail.

Suprisingly, neither Huawei or ZTE have emerged as potential suitors for pieces of this once great company. While these companies may not need or want Nortel’s technology, they would greatly benefit from Nortel’s reseller channel and name brand recongition. This may be an indication that these “new” giants are waiting for more tangible signs of a North American recovery prior to jumping in via inorganic means.

Nortel’s exit could not come at a better time for both Cisco and Juniper. As Cisco’s market share has declined a bit and Juniper has finally “seen the light” within their enterprise division, these companies will certainly commence sales campaigns marketed towards Nortel’s existing customer base. An Avaya bid for Nortel’s Enteprise Business would do little to impact such a campaing nor would it calm the nerves of exiting customers.

So with a “tip of the cap” I bid Nortel adeu and wish her employees, partners, and customers nothing but the best. This ends a significant chapter of IT and it was definately a wild ride.

[qi:gigaom_icon_4G] Earlier this month, when I wrote about Telecom’s Titanic Shifts and the decline

[qi:gigaom_icon_4G] Earlier this month, when I wrote about Telecom’s Titanic Shifts and the decline of the once mighty service providers, in passing I noted the slow-mo descent of Western equipment makers. With the mega-growth registered by non-Western carriers as dominant equipment buyers, we have seen the rise of two hardware giants: Huawei and ZTE.

Their rising fortunes have been mirrored by sharp declines for hardware makers based in Europe and North America. That point was brought home over the weekend when Nortel (s NTL) announced that it was selling CDMA and LTE pieces of its wireless equipment business to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for about $650 million. It was a tactical admission by the once-mighty Nortel that it had little or no room in tomorrow’s telecom world.

I have followed Nortel for a long time. The company rose and fell with the telecom bubble. It got Cisco envy — it bought companies for outrageous prices only to see the deals go nowhere. The hubris of its managers turned this once proud house of innovation into a footnote. The company started to chase new markets too late and relied too much on North American market for too long. A lot of that can be blamed on lack of management.

How long before we see other big names in telecom take a dirt nap? Will Alcatel-Lucent (s ALU) be next? In a note to its clients, UBS Research points out that Alcatel-Lucent is going to face considerable pressure in North America, as NSN will indeed be super aggressive. Given how aggressive Huawei has been in its bid to gain market share, the jury is still out even on NSN’s long-term sustainability.

HALP: that’s what a Farker submitted this afternoon in the “business” category after the announcement from Hewlett-Packard and Alcatel-Lucent. Judging by the punchy lead in the story that ran in today’s SilionValley/San Jose Business Journal, HALP is indeed an appropriate name:

Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) and Palo Alto-based HP (NYSE:HPQ) said they will jointly market products that enable end-to-end transformation for service providers and enterprises.

Where did they get that language? Oh, from the HP press release…

Once the definitive agreement has been executed, the companies will jointly market solutions and capabilities that enable end-to-end transformation for service providers and enterprises.

The companies plan to launch a global go-to-market program to transform communication networks into converged, next-generation infrastructures. As a result of this transformation, service providers will be able to efficiently deliver new, revenue-generating services. HP and Alcatel-Lucent also plan to offer services to manage the new and existing infrastructures for customers looking for flexible sourcing options.

HP and Alcatel-Lucent also plan to create a joint go-to-market initiative to provide communications solutions to mid- and large-size enterprises and public sector organizations. Alcatel-Lucent products in areas such as IP telephony, unified communications, mobility, security and contact centers will be integrated with HP IT solutions. These joint solutions are planned to be offered to enterprises through HP resellers or as managed services.

Furthermore, the alliance will create new end-to-end customer solutions that take advantage of both companies’ product portfolios for the enterprise and telecom markets.

I’ve done my share of B2B marketing and this kind of language doesn’t excite people much. Alcatel-Lucent’s is a little cleaner:

Through the alignment of their offerings and common solutions HP and Alcatel-Lucent plan to create a “one-stop shop,” relieving service providers of the burden and complexity of coordinating the transformation of IT and telecom infrastructures. Similarly, the companies plan to empower enterprises to effectively create and manage truly integrated communication environments.

The alliance will create new end-to-end customer solutions that take advantage of both companies’ product portfolios for the enterprise and telecom markets.

No matter how you figure it, this does seem to add up to a pretty big deal.

Prietenei mele ii cade in mod constant internetul desi in zilele bune prindea viteze decente. Orice padure are uscaturi. Recomand serviciile de internet in vagaunile tarii noastre. Acoperirea este maxima!

3) Televiziune.

Sales fell 6.9 percent in the first quarter to euro3.6 billion, following a steep drop in sales of wireless equipment to North American operators.

The company said it still expects the global market for telecommunications equipment and services to contract between 8 percent and 12 percent this year from 2008. That’s similar to the forecast made last week by rival Networks. In a conference call with reporters, Alcatel-Lucent Chief Executive Ben Verwaayen called 2009 a “transition year” in which “we want to build the foundations so that next year there’ll be much better results.” Shares in the company fell 7.2 percent in the first quarter but have rebounded since then, benefiting from the global stock market rally.

In early trading on the Paris stock exchange Tuesday, the shares were down 6 percent at euro1.84. The company has tried successive waves of restructuring since the merger, with its current plan calling for the elimination by the end of this year of 16,500 jobs. At the end of 2007 the company employed 76,410.

The Alcatel-Lucent tie-up was designed to boost margins through cost and research and development savings, while improving the joint company’s pricing power with telecom operators, its largest customers. The combination aimed to create the critical mass needed to compete with the likes of Huawei Technologies Co. and LM of.

But intense competition forced to the company to pass many of the savings on to customers in the form of discounts. Analysts said Alcatel-Lucent has not coped as well as some of its competitors. According to one estimate, Huawei Technologies even surpassed Alcatel-Lucent in market share in the fourth quarter last year.

The Shenzen, China-based company leapfrogged into third place behind Sweden’s LM Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks, according to Nadine Manjaro, senior analyst at Oyster Bay, N.Y.-based ABI Research. However, CEO Verwaayen noted that last month Alcatel-Lucent notched a pair of “massive deals” in China, including one worth $1 billion with , the world’s biggest phone company by subscribers. Alcatel-Lucent’s first-quarter performance is on par with the weak results reported last month by its main rivals.

Ericsson, the world’s leading maker of mobile broadband infrastructure, last week reported a 35 percent slide in first quarter net profit. Nokia Siemens Networks meanwhile blamed the challenging market conditions for a 12 percent fall in first quarter sales to euro3 billion, and an operating loss of euro122 million. Schaumberg, Ill.-based , North America’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment, last week said its first quarter loss widened to $231 million on a 28 percent drop in sales.

The bill that would force you to wait on the cable/phone supplier for better broadband speeds is up

The bill that would force you to wait on the cable/phone supplier for better broadband speeds is up for a vote tomorrow morning (Wed., May 6) in the NC House Public Utilities Committee in room 1228 of the Legislative building on Jones St. HB 1252 would prevent any NC city/county/town from providing broadband services to its communities.

The vote should be interesting because just yesterday, some BIG private sector companies weighed in against the bill, saying it will stifle next-generation broadband development in our state. We’re talking Google, Intel, Alcatel-Lucent. This should end any notion that municipal broadband is about anything other than better service.

If you care about NC broadband deployment, I hope you’ll join us there. See you tomorrow.

There have been a number of places I have really left and walked away from. Whether be it the differ

There have been a number of places I have really left and walked away from. Whether be it the different schools that I had to leave because of my dad’s job, National College, PESIT, the US, Lucent etc, but nothing hurt me more than leaving IIM Bangalore has. I am sure, people have, across batches hated to leave the campus, for reasons many – be it the friends you make there, be it the lifestyle the campus offers or the halo attached to studying there. None can deny the invisible but evident life of the campus. The 108 acres of land means different things to each of us – ‘a place to realize our dreams’ as in SOPs, a place to become a banker or a consultant, a place to make big bucks, the place of DC++ and so on.

Just a couple of months ago, two of my alumni walked up to F top, the place I loved and lived in the hostels. We exchanged pleasantries and we were told that the two gentlemen lived in our rooms about a decade ago. The mere fact that they had come together to see their rooms from two countries abroad signaled to us, the effect the place has over us.

It had been some time since I experienced emotional pangs (as a friend of mine put it) of nostalgia. The first few days since leaving the campus were the most depressing moments of my life since a long time. The decision to stay on until the last of my friends left campus, meant that I had to walk out of the place alone – no one to bid me off, no one to say “Stay in touch! Will miss you”. As I drove off from campus, I had a barrage of thoughts – about people I might never meet the same way again, the room I will never stay in again, the life I will never experience again, the time I can never get back again. These had an incredibly negative effect on me. I reached ‘home’ and immediately realized that ‘the days’ were over, how much ever I wanted them back, they would not come back to me. My mind refused another home other than campus.

I miss my friends so dearly these days. There are so many fantastic memories, so many times when I have behaved like a prick and I want to apologize to them, so many times I took my friends for granted – there were so many times I could have been much better to my friends. I went back to campus the very next day to get a bit of the campus. F top without my friends meant nothing to me. I was crushed with nostalgia I had never seen before. I decided to never go back there in search of those old days. I decided to move on – move on to new friends not forgetting the old ones, move on to new activities, move on with life. I am going to hold on dearly to the memories I have – the endless talk, the endless laughter, the all-night movies, the debates, the travel etc.
