Luciano Spalletti

Det är väl med viss ambivalens som jag skriver det här, Spalletti är en personlig favorit och man kan lätt hävda att han ser jävligt cool ut. Men han är faktiskt väldigt väldigt ful, stilig, men väldigt ful, det är ungefär som om en muterad nakenråtta parat ihop sig med en gam och fött fram denne taktiske gigant.

Grobianen från Ramblas, när Parma anställde Cuper som tränare erbjöd de honom att flygas över i privatjet, han tackade nej och bad bara om en vanlig flygbiljett. Jag trodde alltid att det var för att han var ödmjuk, men den senaste tiden har jag börjat tvivla, och när han tog över Georgiens landslag förstod jag vad det hela handlar om, låg profil…. Jag menar, kolla på honom, han äter småbarn! Hans val av tränarjobb håller honom borta från rampljuset och tillåter honom att engarea sig i sin favorithobby, barnätande. Och som den förhistoriska neandertalare han är lär han också trivas i ett Georgien som 2008 blev bombade tillbaka till stenåldern av Mother Russia…

Det här är nog vårt enda inlägg om Allsvenska toppstriden som vi kommer göra, och det handlar egentligen bara om AIKs tränare. Stahres styrka ligger inte att han helt klockrent kan plocka in Pavey i slutminuterna som sen avgör matchen, det är inte blott hans taktiska kunnande som gör honom till årets bästa tränare. Hans största styrka ligger i att han är så jävla läskig! Varje gång jag ser honom i rutan ryggar jag tillbaka instinktivt, tänk dig då att stå bredvid mannen på en match, varje sekund måste du titta över ryggen för att se till att Stahre inte är rusandes mot dig och försöker bita dig…

Under hans nästan 10 år i Bolton var han det närmaste man kan komma till en gud, sedan 2007 har livet kanske inte varit lika härligt, eller ja, han gick ju till Newcastle, och som ni kanske märkt här är det i våra ögon likvärdigt med Guantanamo… Det lustiga med hans utseende är att han är ett perfekt exempel på Isaac Newtons teori om tyngdlagen, hela ansiktet har liksom sjunkit ihop och söker sig ner mot magen, vi väntar med spänning på hur han kommer se ut om 10 år…

Well it seems that a certain World Cup winner and a certain Chilean will not be shipping off to Russia anytime soon. Both of the Lupi veterans had been recently linked (along with ex-manager Luciano Spalletti) with a move to Russkie side Zenit St Petersburg, but AS Roma took action today to keep Simone Perrotta and David Pizarro around for a long time yet. Both of the midfielders’ contracts were set to expire at the end of the 2009/10 season, but the extensions agreed upon today will see the 32-year old Perrotta stick around until 2011 and the 30-year old Pizarro here ’til 2013. I’d call this a piece of pretty good business on the part of Rosella Sensi & co – the former internationals are both key components of the Roman side (Pizarro provides offensive creativity and Perrotta misses sitters). However, I gotta wonder – extending their contracts before renewing Er Pupone’s? Shame, Rosella, shame.

Rosella Sensi al contrattacco. Lo fa con una lettera aperta, in cui annuncia un cambio di stile nel suo modo di interpretare la presidenza della Roma. La goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso è stato l’arbitraggio di Rosetti in Milan-Roma, contestatissimo dai giallorossi.  “Il tempo del basso profilo è finito, sono decisa a farmi sentire nei modi e nelle sedi opportune – si legge nella lettera della Sensi -. Credo di avere delle responsabilità istituzionali nel guidare una società di calcio come la Roma. Ho il peso di rappresentare la Roma e per la Roma ho già chiesto rispetto. Non vorrei che qualcuno volesse approfittare del difficile inizio che quest’anno ha avuto la squadra, dalla vicenda Spalletti alla contestazione verso la Società di una parte della tifoseria, pensando di trovarsi innanzi una dirigenza debole, una squadra disorientata ed una tifoseria spaccata. Abbiamo una squadra competitiva, un allenatore capace e di grandissima personalità, come domenica ha dimostrato ancora una volta, ed una tifoseria forte e passionale che saprà stringersi intorno ai suoi colori. Per questo chiedo ai miei giocatori di compattarsi e non voglio più sentire frasi come “Sapevamo come sarebbe finita”, così come chiedo al mister Ranieri di continuare ad infondere forza e carattere a questa squadra che domenica ha dimostrato di essere ancora una delle potenziali leader del campionato”.

Where, oh where, is Stefano Guberti? Roma signed the speedy winger from Bari over the summer – our only major summer signing, if you can call it that – and yet he has featured in very few of this season’s fixtures so far. Admittedly, he was a Spalletti signing, full of speed and talent and attacking danger – not a signing that really fits into Ranieri’s more defensive philosophy. However, I for one think it’s a waste to sign such a young, talented player only to have him ride the pine until January; at which point he will probably loaned out or sold under a co-ownership agreement. As a club, Roma saw fit to invest what little spending money we had this summer in the young Cagliaritano, and I believe it would be prudent of Claudio Ranieri not to put that investment to waste.

The speedy winger has spent most of the season getting acquainted with the bench.

Back from International week – hoo hah! Roma won – hoo hah! …Okay, lets get on with it. As per usual, just the big games.

Football:

Manchester Utd 3-1 Tottenham – 47 seconds. That’s all it took for Jermain Defoe to give the Spurs a gloriously early lead over the Red Devils. With a bicycle kick, no less. It would take United twenty-two minutes to recover completely, as Ryan Giggs curled an equally glorious free kick away from the fully outstretched keeper Cudicini. The play went back and forth for a time, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s men went ahead before the half (40′) courtesy of Anderson’s first ever EPL goal. Dimitar Berbatov had an active night, posing a constant problem for the Spurs defensive line until he made way for substitute Michael Carrick. United saw their fortunes flag a bit upon the hour mark, as Paul Scholes received a (perhaps harsh) second yellow and was shown his marching orders after clattering into Tom Huddlestone. However Tottenham was largely lackluster and the Devils would double their lead on a Wayne Rooney goal with twenty minutes remaining – more than enough to see 10-men United earn a deserved three points.

Chelsea 2-1 Stoke City – Stoke Fans knew it couldn’t last forever. The team looked to continue their 100% success rate at home in Britannia Stadium, and were aided in that by the head of Abdoulaye Faye in the 30th minute. An enormous amount of pressure was put on the Blues, and Cech was forced to make more than a few last-ditch saves, but the tides began to turn in the second minute (out of a whopping eight) of first-half stoppage time, when Didier Drogba proved that Chelsea are not going to let a little FIFA ban ruin their fiery streak by smashing the ball into the roof of the net. After the half the Stoke back line took a relentless pounding, and though they looked rock-solid, like any rock they eventually began to crumble under the waves of assault. It would be Florent Malouda who would eventually find the back of the net, though it would be again in stoppage time (4th minute) that Chelsea preserved their fantastic winning streak.

Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal – Manchester City faced by far the hardest test they have come up against this season in the form of Arsenal – and passed with flying colours. It was the first return to the Emirates for former Arsenal players Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor since both picked up big-money transfers to Manchester in the offseason – neither expecting a warm welcome. Both sides were missing key players, with Robinho and Carlos Tevez out for City and Andrei Arshavin missing from the Gunners – all picked up knocks while serving international duty this week. A Manuel Almunia own-goal opened the scoring in this fiery first battle between the two sides who will both likely be jockeying for fourth place this season – the ball hitting the crossbar and bouncing, somewhat comically, off the diving keeper’s head and over the line. The second unfortunate own-goal in two weeks for Arsenal did not diminish their spirit, as they dominated the early portion of the game despite the deficit. The game was an incredibly scrappy outing, and the next goal did not come until well into the second half, with Robin Van Persie equalizing for the Gooners on the counter-attack on 62′. Soon after, Emmanuel Adebayor left the Dutchman with a mark to remember, making accidental boot-to-head contact, drawing blood and enraging his former sides’ fans. Unfortunately, their outrage would not subside any time soon, as Craig Bellamy would restore City’s lead before none other than Adebayor doubled it, celebrating his goal with a 90-yard run to stand defiantly before the Arsenal supporters, a move which earned him a booking and a plastic seat thrown at him from the stands. Shaun Wright-Phillips would all but seal the win in the 83rd minute, capping off a half that saw City turn the game around to dominate the home side, though Tomas Rosicky, returning from injury, would do his best to shake that dominance with a fantastic strike in the 87th. A day to forget for City fans, though they’ll take consolation in the fact that the FA will have taken an interest in Adebayor’s inflammatory celebrations.

Yeah, they almost looked this good.

Liverpool 4-0 Burnley - Welcome to the Yossi Benayoun show! The Israeli international was nothing but class on Saturday, bagging a brace and lifting his side through a thorough thrashing of the Clarets. Burnley started well enough, looking organized and confident under the leadership of Owen Coyle. Liverpool fans suffered through a frustrating first twnety-odd minutes, as Fernando Torres seemed to lack any conviction on the attack – but Rafa Benitez moved Steven Gerrard up from his unusual position as a holding midfielder and Dirk Kuyt in from the wing to add some danger to his side. On 25′ Glen Johnson spotted Yossi Benayoun making a run and fed him the ball – the Israeli continued his mazy run past two defenders before slotting home to give his side the lead. Burnley looked to silence the jubilant Kop by way of Martin Patterson, who troubled the home side’s defense and might have drawn a spot kick after being nudged off the ball in the box by Lucas. Dirk Kuyt doubled ‘Pool’s lead before the half, burying a rebound from a long-range Benayoun strike. Gerrard only gained dominance in the second half, passing up a clear-cut chance for himself to supply Benayoun with his second of the night, and hitting the post after a bombing run into the box. It would be the Israeli who would ultimately knock the Clarets into the dust, with an easy finish after taking advantage of a misplayed offside trap to lift his side to a 4-0 win at Anfield.

Calcio:

Roma 2-1 Siena – I don’t really know how to feel about this one. The win is much-needed, but Massimo Maccarone made mince-meat out of our defense to score the opener, despite Claudio Ranieri’s ultra-defensive 4-4-1-1. Speaking of ultra-defensive, this was an ugly game – I feel that the fickle Roma fans who effectively ousted Spalletti might soon be longing for his attractive attacking style of football. It is noteworthy that both of our goals came from our back lines (Philippe Mexes and John-Arne Riise, respectively), though Mexes was set up beautifully by Totti. Also notable is that both were second half goals, and that our winner came in the 89th minute. Daniele De Rossi seemed to be on the verge of exploding throughout the match, and several times had to be calmed down by his teammates – a sign of intensity, or a worrying one? One bright spot: When Vucinic took the field, the whole squad was galvanized; Totti became a new man (well, an old one – but the one we like) and we began to look dangerous. At any rate, a win is a win, and let’s look towards grabbing another one against Fiorentina next weekend instead of picking apart this one too much.

Juventus 2-0 Lazio – Another entry for the good news column. I hate Juventus as much as any self-respecting Italian, but the choice between La Vecchia Signora and I Biancocelesti is no choice at all. Like Roma, Juventus scraped out an ugly win to secure a place at the top of the Serie A table, two points ahead of scudetto favourites Inter. Lazio thought they had gone ahead just before the half with a strike from Stefano Mauri, but the shot was disallowed after Julio Cruz was adjudged to have fouled Nicola LeGrottaglie in the box and the whistle had blown. Neither side was able to find the back of the net until the 73rd minute, when a rocket-powered volley from on-loan Martín Cáceres, making his Juventus debut, beat Lazio shot-stopper (and fellow Uruguyan) Fernando Muslera. Lazio pushed hard to equalize, but to no avail, and David Trezeguet added insult to injury with a late, late goal in the 94th minute to ensure Juve back-to-back successes in the Eternal City. The good news for Juve haters though is that young star Sebastian Giovinco, who was substituted after Diego picked up an injury (more good news) has complained bitterly about the club’s continued practice of ignoring its young talent – going so far as to say that he regrets being born Italian, as the foreigners get better starting chances (paraphrasing, of course). Gio; come to Roma – ti amiamo!

AC Milan 0-0 Livorno – Milan coach Leonardo has lamented after this weekend’s match that his team failed to show up for the first half of their disappointing draw against the newly-promoted Amaranti. Both teams missed golden opportunities, with Cristiano Lucarelli losing his marker to nod just wide of goal, and Andrea Pirlo crashing a free-kick off the crossbar. For the most part though, it was a quiet night, and won’t say any more than that – because I don’t think I can put it any better than Leonardo did himself.

Genoa 4-1 Napoli – Leonardo isn’t the only disappointed manager this weekend: Napoli’s Roberto Donadoni is livid with his squad after they lost their 17th straight away game at Genoa this weekend – a streak that extends all the way back to October of last year. Sergio Floccari, Giandomenico Mesto, Hernan Crespo and Houssine Kharja all netted for I Grifoni, despite Napoli taking the early lead by way of Marek Hamsik. Genoa have grabbed 9 points from their first three outings to tie them with Juventus and city rivals Sampdoria at the top of the table.

Inter 2-0 Parma – A result to be expected – the newly promoted Parma failed to live up to the promise of their companions in promotion Bari and fell to the reigning champions. However, though they didn’t see much of the play, the visitors did manage to frustrate the Nerazzurri at home in the San Siro, and managed to hold them off for 70 minutes before Samuel Eto’o broke the deadlock and Diego Milito sealed their fate.

Udinese 4-2 Catania - Le Zebrette were lifted from a rather tepid start to the season by an Antonio Di Natale treble which saw them rise above the Sicilians in front of their home crowd at the Stadio Friuli. Finally a truly convincing result from the Northern side.

Fußball:

Bayern Münich 5-1 Borussia Dortmund – Fallen Bundesliga giants Bayern Münich have reasserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with after the international break, dismantling Borussia Dortmund in their own home at Signal Iduna Park. Borussia manager Jürgen Klopp had been adamant that his side would attack the visitors and hold them at bay, but Bayern were in unbeatable form and goals from Franck Ribery, Mario Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger, as well as a brace from Thomas Müller, were enough to ensure that Louis Van Gaal’s men emerged victorious. Not even the capacity crowd of 80,000 was enough to daunt Die Roten, who sent their opponents packing with style and ease.

Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 Vfl Wolfsburg – Last year’s Bundesliga Champions Wolfsburg suffered another blow to their title hopes, with their second loss in as many weeks of play. Wolves’ keeper Diego Benaglio was sent off early in the first half after a reckless foul, and Leverkusen smelled blood, taking the lead just six minutes later thanks to Simon Rolfes, who would bag a brace in the outing. Zvjezdan Misimovic and Grafite would score for Wolfsburg, and their ten-man disadvantage was eased with the second-half ejection of Eren Derdiyok, but Stephan Kiessling’s fast-break goal would prove to be enough to see Der Werkself take three points and rise to the top of the table.

Futbol:

Valencia 4-2 Valladolid – Valencia’s lethal combination of David Silva and David Villa proved that the International break did them absolutely no harm, with Silva grabbing a goal and Villa a brace (alongside a goal from Mata) to lift their side in an impressive display away at the Estadio Jose Zorilla. Los Che maintained their winning start to the season, while Valladolid picked up their second loss. Nauzet Alemán and Manucho netted for the home side.

Villarreal 1-1 Mallorca - Neither side could come away with more than one point from this weekends match at El Madrigal, with Giuseppe Rossi and Borja Valero scoring a lone goal for each respective side.

Real Madrid 3-0 Espanyol – The Catalan side fell before the still-shiny-new might of Los Galacticos, with new signing Kaka proving his worth by providing two crucial assists that lifted his side well clear of Los Periquitos. Granero, Guti and Cristiano Ronaldo, who came on as a substitute, all found the back of the net to make sure Madrid returned home with three points in hand.

Barcelona 2-0 Getafe - No surprises here. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi both scored in order to ensure Barca a win away at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.

Sevilla 4-1 Zaragoza – Luis Fabiano once again proves that he is one of the most dangerous (and perhaps underrated) strikers in the world, bagging a brace to help his side dismantle Zaragoza at home in the Estadio Sánchez Pizjuán. Abdoulay Konko and Perotti added to their sides total with a goal apiece, while Arizmendi scored Zaragoza’s lone goal which briefly equalized in the 32nd minute.

Luciano Spalletti dopo un periodo di breve vacanza, si fà per dire, l’ex tecnico giallorosso andrà a Sky per arricchire la squadra dei commentatori. Il quotidiano Il Messaggero rivela che Luciano Spalletti, dimessosi martedì scorso da allenatore della Roma, farà ora il commentatore per Sky Sport. Prima di iniziare questa nuova avventura il tecnico toscano si recherà a Manchester per seguire gli allenamenti del suo collega e amico Alex Ferguson. Un’esperienza che l’ex tecnico della Roma vivrà prima di ritrovare un’altra panchina.

“Non me l’aspettavo, sono rimasto molto deluso, soprattutto per il rapporto che avevamo”. Non è tardata ad arrivare la replica di Luciano Spalletti, oggi alla “Cedial Racing Cup 2009″, alle parole di Rosella Sensi, che si era mostrata sorpresa dalle sue dimissioni tanto da dire, durante la conferenza stampa di presentazione di Ranieri, che non si sarebbe mai “aspettata che Spalletti potesse abbandonare la nave in questo momento”.

“Sarebbe stato più facile dimettersi a giugno – ha aggiunto Spalletti – e forse avrei trovato anche una squadra da allenare in Italia”.

Circa 500 persone si sono radunate stamane davanti ai cancelli del centro Sportivo Fulvio Bernardini per contestare la società giallorossa. La protesta ha preso il via da un paio d’ore e man mano che passa il tempo aumenta il numero dei partecipanti. I tifosi hanno intonato cori a favore di Spalletti, contro la campagna acquisti e soprattutto contro Rosella Sensi. Sono state inoltre lanciate quattro bombe carta e alcuni fumogeni.

Volevo scrivere qualcosa di più prolisso, perchè l’evento non è da sottovalutare, ma sinceramente sono rimasto senza parole. L’addio di Spalletti, anche se più volte dal sottoscritto è stato individuato come l’unica soluzione (l’avevo detto la prima volta un anno fa), mi rende malinconico, e soprattutto mi fa cadere dalle nuvole. Diciamo che Spalletti è stato quasi sempre il mio capro espriatorio, perchè, soprattutto l’anno scorso, per colpa della sua testardaggine abbiamo perso troppi punti ad inizio stagione, e per la fiducia incondizionata che riponeva in alcuni calciatori che, ormai, hanno dato il meglio di loro (vedi Taddei, Tonetto, Cassetti…) però non mi sono mai soffermato ad immaginare una Roma senza Spalletti. Anzi, ho sempre sognato di rivedere la Roma di Spalletti, quella ch giocava come il Brasile del ‘70, quella che con una decina di tocchi di prima portava davanti al portiere chiunque. Solo l’1 Settembre ci siamo accorti che quella Roma ormai è un’utopia, che adesso c’è bisogno di risultati, di sangue e sudore. Lo spettacolo non serve più, serve prendere meno gol e farne di più degli avversari, anche uno solo in più. Serve organizzazione difensiva, perchè tanto là davanti sono tutti bravi e fantasiosi.

In questo senso Ranieri era la miglior scelta che si potesse fare. Oltre al fatto di essere Romano, romanista, testaccino, ha pure tanta esperienza, e non è la prima volta che è chiamato per far miracoli (nel 2008 gli si chiese di portare la Juve in UEFA, la  portò in Champions).

E’ ovvio che parlare adesso è facile, ma credo, e spero, che con Ranieri potremmo completare questa stagione in maniera dignitosa, per poi aspettare che finalmente qualcuno ci porti via Rosella. Ormai è ora di cambiare aria, e pure in fretta.

Adesso, più che mai, riguardo i gol e i filmati di Lione, di Madrid, di Milano…e mi viene una certa tristezza, pensando che non rivedrò più quel capoccione seduto sulla nostra panchina. M’ero abituato alla sua calma piatta, alle sue figure retoriche, alla sua correttezza, che ha ancora una volta spiattellato in faccia alla dirigenza, lasciando i suoi soldi (tanti) sul tavolo. Capello se ne andò di notte, portandosi via qualche Giuda in più, e non ebbe neanche il buon senso di dire grazie, a una città che lo aveva voluto bene, quasi adorato. Spalletti ha fatto l’opposto. E’ sceso lui dall’auto per dire ai giornalisti che se ne sarebbe andato, nessun “portavoce”, nessun procuratore. Solo la sua sincerità. Resterà per sempre un esempio da seguire per chi, verrà a Roma ad allenare, e per chi vorrà imparare a fare l’allenatore, ma ancor prima, ad essere uomo.

Grazie Luciano, meritavi di più, dalla società, dai giocatori, da noi tifosi. Vai a vincere quello che meriti, ovunque, io tiferò per te.

PS: …adesso che il capro espriatorio se n’è andato la soluzione è una sola: S U D O R E. Spero che le 11 signorine in mini-gonna lo capiscano adesso, che non c’è più tempo per raschiare il fondo.

Il primo pensiero quan­do non è più allenatore della Ro­ma e quando hanno ufficializzato l’arrivo di Ranieri, Luciano Spal­letti lo ha avuto per i suoi gioca­tori. «Domani andrò a salutarli uno per uno. Ma quale sms, li saluterò di persona. Io con loro non ho nessun problema». Fi­no a ieri sera non aveva ricevuto una telefonata di Ranieri: «Non ha il dovere di farlo, ma i rappor­ti tra noi sono buoni».

Quelli con la città speciali. Affetto vero, con­traccambiato: «Ho avuto un rap­porto intenso con questa città, sotto tutti gli aspetti. “Mi sento dilaniato dentro. E’ stata una decisione molto dura per me soprattutto dal punto di vista personale”. Luciano Spalletti, che ieri ha lasciato la panchina della Roma dopo quattro anni, lo ha detto a ‘Repubblica‘. “Roma e’ la mia citta’ ormai. Sono stati quattro anni bellissimi, con un rapporto con la citta’ e i tifosi molto intenso. La mia non e’ una fuga”, ha aggiunto l’allenatore toscano per il quale le dimissioni “erano la decisione piu’ giusta da prendere per il bene della Roma. Spero solo che la mia scelta sia compresa e apprezzata. L’ingaggio, il contratto non deve essere un problema. Non perche’ io sia l’unico o il maggiore responsabile di questa situazione, ma perche’ cosi’ squadra, societa’ e tifosi potranno ritrovarsi”. Per Spalletti (che ha confermato di non essere stato costretto a lasciare la societa’) la scelta di prendere Ranieri, “e’ la piu’ giusta per la citta’ e per i tifosi. Conosce benissimo questo ambiente”.

Alemanno: «Auguri a Ranieri, da Lourdes valgono il doppio»

ROMA (1 settembre) – Diverse le reazioni del mondo politico al cambio al vertice tecnico dell’As Roma. Da Lourdes, dove è in pellegrinaggio diocesano, il sindaco Alemanno manda un «in bocca al lupo e un sostegno perché riporti la squadra alla vittoria. Spalletti ha chiuso un ciclo importante e lo ringraziamo, ora è tempo che inizi un altro ciclo per la Roma».

L’arrivo di Ranieri «speriamo segni l’inizio di una fase diversa – ha detto il sindaco – È un romano che si dedicherà molto alla squadra». Sorridendo ha aggiunto: «gli auguri da Lourdes valgono il doppio».

Zingaretti: Spalletti faceva di necessità virtù. «Rivolgo il mio più sincero in bocca al lupo a Claudio Ranieri, che avrà il grande onore di allenare la squadra della sua città. Sono certo che le esperienze maturate in campo internazionale e le sue indiscusse doti professionali gli consentiranno di rivestire al meglio un ruolo così prestigioso e di riportare al più presto la Roma ai livelli che le competono in Italia e in Europa». Lo ha detto il presidente della Provincia di Roma Nicola Zingaretti. «Voglio ringraziare Luciano Spalletti per le emozioni che ci ha regalato in questi anni, per i trofei vinti e per lo spettacolo che la sua squadra ha offerto a tutti i tifosi romanisti. Ha confermato a Roma di essere un ottimo tecnico ed è riuscito a dare alla squadra un gioco brillante, facendo a volte di necessità virtù. Adesso spetta ai giocatori riscattare il deludente avvio di stagione e tornare a regalare ai tifosi le soddisfazioni che meritano». Marrazzo: Ranieri uomo giusto per il rilancio. «Claudio Ranieri è la persona giusta per rilanciare la Roma, perchè oltre alla serietà e alla preparazione già dimostrata nelle altre sue esperienze, in questa nuova sfida metterà in campo anche qualcosa in più, per ragioni di cuore. Sono certo che i risultati arriveranno molto presto», commenta il presidente della Regione Lazio Piero Marrazzo. Marrazzo ha rivolto un «ringraziamento sincero a Luciano Spalletti per i risultati raggiunti e per alcune pagine di grande calcio che in questi anni ha regalato non soltanto ai tifosi della Roma». Secondo Marrazzo, «con i suoi grandi giocatori e l’aiuto della tifoseria la Roma saprà sicuramente trovare le energie per uscire dal periodo di difficoltà che sta attraversando».

Luciano Steps Down...

Well, this morning was certainly full of change for all of us Romaniste. Luciano Spalletti announced his ’surprise’ resignation; though it seems that most of us saw this coming, and as I write this and read what others have to say, no one seems really surprised. Admittedly, it might come as a shock to some that any manager would resign after only the first two games of the season, even after two disappointing losses, but such is the way of calcio (in the season previous to Spalletti’s arrival, Roma went through four managers). I Lupi reached a period of great success under his leadership, but have struggled in the past year and it was apparent that Luciano’s time in the Eternal City was coming to a close. Spalletti led us through several successful seasons, winning the Coppa Italia twice, SuperCoppa Italia once, and, in his first season at Roma, leading the team to an 11-match winning streak that remains the longest ever in Serie A (and which culminated in a 2-0 victory over Lazio, no less!). However, last season was one of disappointments, as i Lupi failed to qualify for Champions League and finished in a disappointing 6th place to secure only the final spot in this year’s Europa League. This summer saw the club strapped for cash and forced to sell off several players, including one of our most promising young (if perennially injured) talents in Alberto Aquilani.

Spalletti was an excellent tactician, with the 4-2-4 strikerless formation that he favoured bringing exciting and attractive attacking football to the capital. However, his man-management skills may have left something to be desired, as he had a series of rows with several members of the squad and at times seemed on the verge of losing control of the dressing room. Spalletti also faced much criticism for pushing his team too hard in training; many of the injuries that plagued Roma last season were picked up in training and subsequently blamed upon this tendency. However, the shiny-headed Tuscan was our fearless leader through four bittersweet years, and I for one believe that we can thank him for as much of the sweetness as the bitter. Grazie, Luciano.

...But can Claudio step up?

Roma fans did not have to wait long to find out who would be taking the helm of la Maggica. Even as Spalletti was stepping down this morning, the Club President Rosella Sensi & co. were securing his replacement. Enter Claudio Ranieri; the man who first led Chelsea to respectability in the Premier League (by way of their highest league placing in 49 years). He is also the man who was sacked by Juventus with just two games remaining at the end of last season, following a poor run of form that saw la Vecchia Signora go on a 7-game winless streak (although they finished second only to Inter in Serie A). A bittersweet career, yes? He’ll fit right in.

Say what you will about the man, but Ranieri is a Roman through and through. He was born in the Eternal city, played his first club football in the Giallorossi shirt, and now is returning to take the helm of a club that perhaps needs the touch of a true Romanista to revitalize its flagging fortunes. The Tinkerman, as dubbed by the English press (for his incessant rotation of squads and players), will be looking to make the most out of a squad which holds a lot of promise but has started off the season very much on the wrong foot. He has been accused of being far too rigid and inflexible with his squads and his tactics, and it is yet to be seen how his personal brand of football will fare in the Eternal City, where the fans are fickle and expectations are always high. Ranieri will have a two week break from Serie A due to International call-ups next weekend – though this also means that many members of the squad will be missing during his first week in charge. When they return, it will be back to work for i Giallorossi, as the team will be looking to improve upon their standing 0 points on a trip north to Siena on the 13th of September. Ranieri will have to implement whatever changes he sees necessary in that timeframe and he and the squad will have to use the time to get used to one another as well. Let us hope that in two weeks time le Romaniste will be cheering, il Robur will be handily defeated and the doubt and disappointment that hangs over the Eternal City will have dissipated like a fog before the moon. Gliene ho dette spesso di tutti i colori, ma giuro che un po’ mi dispiacerà non vedere più Luciano Spalletti sulla panchina della Roma. Le colpe dell’incubo che stiamo vivendo da un anno a questa parte non possono essere tutte le sue, è ovvio, ma la gestione di questi ultimi mesi è stata a dir poco incomprensibile. L’insistere su un metodo di gioco redditizio e bello a vedersi, ma ahimè mal sopportato dai giocatori e conosciuto a memoria dagli avversari e su una serie di giocatori ormai impresentabili (Cassetti e Perrotta su tutti) ha costituito forse l’errore principale di una gestione costellata di alti e bassi. A Spalletti va indubbiamente il merito di aver preso la Roma dal marasma e averla portata ai vertici in tre stagioni. Ma, al tempo stesso, va anche il demerito (condiviso con società e giocatori) di averla riportata, in un batter d’occhio, nel marasma da cui l’aveva raccolta. Detto ciò, credo che vada comunque ringraziato. Di certo per le tre coppe vinte e per lo scudetto sfiorato, ma soprattutto per aver riportato entusiasmo in un ambiente troppo abituato alla depressione cronica.

Partiamo dalle dimissioni
“Sono state una mia iniziativa, la cosa più giusta per il rapporto che ho avuto con la squadre e soprattutto con la città. Rapporto bellissimo e molto intenso”.

Cosa rimane?
“Basta guardare i numeri di collettivo e individuali. Risultati importanti, messaggio importante al calcio europeo e mondiale. Totti ha fatto grandissimi numeri sotto l’aspetto dei gol e delle giocate. Se non c’è grande intesa, con staff e dirigenti, se non c’è rapporto professionale e umano riuscire a fare questi numeri, che rimarranno nella storia della Roma penso sia difficile. Il resto sono discorsi per perdere tempo”.

Come è nata l’idea delle dimissioni?
“Questi due risultati hanno fatto la differenza. Ma poi delle cose con la società le ho volute mettere a posto dall’inizio della stagione, ho parlato con la Sensi e non è bastato. Per fare di più dovevo assumermi delle responsabilità, responsabilità che sono racchiuse nel gesto che ho fatto”.

Un gesto non comune rinunciar a due anni di contratto
“Sono convinto che chiunque altro se avesse vissuto la Roma in questo momento avrebbe fatto uguale. Ci si sente avvolti da qualcosa di particolare che è vivere questa città, non bisogna stare a sottolineare il gesto”.

Ricordi?
“Ne porto via molti. Notti bellissime allo stadio. Vittorie bellissime in campionato e in Champions, a Lione, a Madrid e con il Chelsea in casa. Notti illuminate dai riflettori dello stadio in cui la squadra ha giocato grande calcio e tutti hanno dato tantissimo”.

E quello scudetto sfiorato…
“E’ il rammarico più grosso, siamo arrivati davvero vicini. Poi bisognerebbe andare ad esaminare delle cose che sono successe un po’ più in profondità. Ma è un grande risultato, siamo arrivati a contendere un titolo all’Inter che è una grandissima squadra”.

Cosa trova Ranieri?
“Da tecnico preparato e attento quale è avrà guardato quello che è successo in queste due gare, essendo romanista gli stanno a cuore le sorti della squadra, perciò sarà stato attento. Ha visto che la squadra non ha giocato male, anzi. Con il Genoa benissimo. Con la Juve loro ci sono stati superiori, ma gli episodi sono stati determinanti. La Roma poteva andare anche in vantaggio e poteva venire fuori un’altra partita”.

Adesso?
“Avrò tempo per famiglia e figli. Andrò in giro per il mondo a documentarmi, ci sono tecnici bravi, emergenti, voglio vedere come lavorano, studiare le metodologie nuove. Mi fa piacere di aver ricevuto un messaggio di solidarietà di Ferguson che mi ha dato la sua disponibilità per vederlo lavorare la prossima settimana. E poi seguirò le sorti della Roma, che rimane una grande Roma e che avrà il supporto di un grande tecnico come Ranieri”.

Un messaggio ai tifosi?
“Un messaggio carico di affetto. Mi porterò sempre dentro l’inno cantato dai tifosi allo stadio, simbolo dell’amore dei tifosi per la loro squadra. E io sarò lì a cantarlo sempre”.
