This is it, folks, the grand daddy of all college rivalries! Noted by ESPN as the greatest North American sports rivalry today, the bad blood between the University of Michigan and the Ohio State University is unequaled. This weekend marks the one hundred and sixth meeting of the two teams, in the last regular-season football game. If you don’t happen to be one who bleeds maize and blue, or scarlet and gray, now’s your chance to catch up on the rivalry that will be on the tips of everyone’s tongues this week.

1. Football Victories

Michigan: 52 wins, 42 losses, 3 ties
Ohio State: 42 wins, 52 losses, 3 ties

Three credits to: Michigan. The Wolverines have also won 42 Big Ten conference titles (compared to Ohio State’s 33) and 11 national titles (compared to the Buckeyes’ 7).

2. Memorable Moments

Michigan: In one of the most famous football games in history, the 1950 Wolverines fought their way to victory 9-3 in Columbus.  In what is known to history as the “Snow Bowl,” the match took place in one of the worst Ohio blizzards on record. Before its start, Ohio State had the option of forfeiting the game and retaining the Big 10 championship title. However, since they decided to play, the two teams duked it out in the cold and snow, punting 45 times, occasionally on first downs. Michigan stealing the victory, and the title, on enemy turf? How sweet it was!
Ohio State: In the 1973 match-up between the Wolverines and the Buckeyes, both teams entered the game undefeated. The match would decide the Big 10 conference champion and which team would travel to the national championship at the Rose Bowl. When the game ended in a heart-wrenching tie, athletic directors of the other Big 10 conference schools had to vote by secret ballot for their choice of a winner. Ultimately, OSU became the victor, in what was one of the most legendary games in history.

Three credits to: Ohio State. With stakes raised to the limit–a conference championship, a trip to the Rose Bowl, and a tie with your most storied rival–having the confidence of your fellow conference members is something to relish.

3. Terrific Traditions

Michigan: American composer John Philip Sousa, who made a career of writing march songs, once declared the UM march song “the greatest college fight song ever written.”  Called “The Victors,” it has not only been played on the field and at commencement, but as the entrance theme song (in lieu of Hail to the Chief) for proud alum President Gerald Ford.
Ohio State: A seemingly cliche quote by one of OSU’s coaches turned into a legendary tradition for the Buckeyes. When asked about how he he planned to approach the Wolverines, Ohio State coach Francis Schmidt said, “They put their pants on one leg at a time same as everyone else.” Since then, the “Golden Pants Club” has awarded statues of golden pants to each OSU Buckeye who has scored a victory over Michigan.

Three credits to: Ohio State, for marrying college tradition appropriately with potty humor!

CNN’s Anderson Cooper will be host of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.”

CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” returns to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Thanksgiving night, as the network celebrates its third year of honoring everyday people making a difference.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper hosts the star-studded gala, which will be seen around the world on November 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

 

The telecast shines a spotlight on the extraordinary accomplishments of the Top 10 CNN Heroes, who were selected by a distinguished Blue Ribbon Panel. Each of this year’s honorees will receive $25,000 in recognition of their work.

The show culminates with the announcement of the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, who will receive an additional $100,000. Voting to select the Hero of the Year is being conducted through an online poll at CNN.com/Heroes, ending November 19 (6 a.m. ET)

Performers and presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s tribute show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year’s show included appearances by Hugh Jackman, Salma Hayek, Cameron Diaz, Forest Whitaker, Meg Ryan, Terrence Howard, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Lucy Liu, with performances by Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and John Legend.

Since February, profiles of 2009 CNN Heroes have been airing weekly on air and online, each chosen from nominations submitted through the CNN Heroes Web site. This year, more than 9,000 nominations were received, more than twice the number of nominations submitted in 2008.

This record number of nominations is further evidence of the momentum CNN Heroes has built in just a few short years,” said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide.

“Viewers have been engaged by these stories of inspiration and accomplishment beyond our expectations. It is truly an honor to be able to introduce the CNN Heroes to our global audience every year.”

Again this year, producer/director Joel Gallen will serve as executive producer of “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.” Among his credits, Gallen produced telethon events supporting victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, winning an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for “America: A Tribute to Heroes.”

The Kodak Theatre is best known as the first permanent home of the Academy Awards.

Tenía esta entrada en borrador desde hace tiempo pero sólo hasta hoy que me la repito, como por tercera vez, me animo a publicarla formalmente. En fin, peli de John Stevenson y Mark Osborne de 2008, nominada al Oscar como mejor película animada, con doce premios, veinte nominaciones más y ratificando a Jack Black como un héroe de los niños en los Kids’ Choice Awards.

Es una historia sencilla con una moraleja de crecimiento personal y sobretodo de autoconfianza, de fé en uno mismo y en los sueños que lo caracterizan como individuo único. Bonita.

Sin embargo, hay aspectos realmente delirantes en la peli que la hacen particularmente excelente. Lo primero, Dreamworks saliendose del esquema de Shrek, que le dió tantos triunfos y reinventándose con un excelente producto.

Dos, Jack Black como un enorme oso panda llamado Po, un gordo lleno de ilusiones y sueños, su papel de toda la vida, con esa voz de Black tan característica de él, tan entusiasta y llena de falsos logros, de superación y adoración de héroes imaginarios; esta vez con la personificación de un niño de diez años, muy trabajador, muy responsable pero con la cabeza llena de fantasías.

Tres, Ian McShane, actor que recordamos en la exitosa Deadwood, poniendo esa voz profunda, oscura y macabra en el lado antagónico de la historia sobre un tigre de bengala dominado por su orgullo y descarriado al lado oscuro del Kung Fu. Esta voz y la del comandante Vachir a cargo de Michael Clarke Duncan me parecen realmente sobresalientes.

Cuatro, los apuntes de David Cross y Seth Rogen.

Cinco, la dirección de arte a cargo de Raymond Zibach combinado con las cámaras y cinematografía de Yong Duk Jhun (obviamente este dato me lo bajé de IMDb) hacen que la peli sea consistente, interesante, divetida, entretenida, un buen plan para pasar el rato así uno ya se la haya visto.

Seis, la secuencia animada del principio, en una simulación 2D bien interesante. Un sueño de Po describiendo un estado épico del equipo de los 5 Furiosos y El Guerrero Dragón, una secuencia de katas del más fino arte marcial y después contrastado con la caricatura en la que se convierte al final esta secuencia me parece el premio mayor.

Obviamente, un trabajo impresionante de todo ese equipo técnico, tan grande pero que logran resolver de una manera sencilla todo el tema del 3D, el matte painting, los mapas, los esqueletos, las animaciones, los sostenidos, las secuencias, etc… Y sumado al impresionante resto del reparto como son Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Randall Duk Kim, el legendario James Hong y hasta Wayne Knight, hacen de esta obra un paquete sin igual.

Nota. Me volvió a suceder que no encontraba un afiche que me gustara completamente y me tocó hacer el mío. Ojalá les guste.

Nov 13, 2009 – The renowned Asian Media Personality Sandeep Marwah, the President of Marwah Studios has been honored at 33rd Cairo International Film Festival and has been introduced to the World Cinema and its fraternity as the producer of largest number of short films in the World and President of one of the most successful film schools of the World.

Established since 1976, the Cairo International Film Festival is classified as a category “A” festival as recognized by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producer’s Associations) and is undoubtedly the oldest and most important festival in the Middle East and has been an inspiration to several other budding festivals.

This year the CIFF has acknowledged  its honored tradition and welcome the new generation of brilliant filmmakers from India by honoring Indian Cinema. The festival is from 10th to 20th November in Cairo and has been  attended , by the whos who of cinema World including Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson, Lucy Liu and Tom Berenger, who is also a member on the international jury.

“I am  impressed by the wonderful gesture extended by the 33rd  International  Film Festival by giving so much space to Indian Cinema this time” said Sandeep Marwah. while talking to the International press at Cairo. ” I am sure this all will result into better relations between two countries and more business time to come.” Marwah added

Hasn’t it been a while since we saw Lucy Liu do something fabulous? Turns out, it’s because she’s been busy producing and narrating a new documentary called “Red Light.” It’s about human trafficking, which the Department of Justice says is the third most profitable criminal activity in the world. Now that Lucy’s promoting the film, we hope to see a lot more of her. At the Cairo International Film Festival, she expressed her dedication to pursuing the end of human trafficking, though she knows it “is really going to take a really long time.” Look at the trailer above, and tell me it doesn’t tear your heart out.

Lucy Liu

As a fellow Asian gal, I’ve long coveted Lucy Liu’s hair.  I came across this style of hers which I felt would be really appropriate for this season’s holiday parties.  I like the contrast between sleek and wavy and a half-updo always creates a pretty, feminine look that is not too formal.

I consulted Rodney Cutler, celebrity hair stylist and owner of Cutler Salons (one of my personal favorite, staple salons) for a step by step on how to achieve Lucy Liu’s style.  Luckily, it’s a lot easier than it looks!

1. Blow-dry hair with a flat brush using Cutler Protectant Treatment and Volumizing Spray
2. Create a low-side part, and then a second part that is parallel to the forehead
3. Curl hair with a large curling iron, leaving the front section out
4. Brush Redken Vinyl Glam into front section and tuck behind ear. Bobby pins are optional.
5. Finally, finish look with Redken workforce 09 on entire head

Rumors are circulating that there could be another Charlie’s Angels movie coming soon. However there are some issues. Some are wondering if people would even care if the angels came back, and if they are high-tech enough for today’s audience. Only time will tell if we will see the angels kicking butt on the big screen.

Awhile back I asked for input from divorced dads willing to talk about sex and dating. I was curious, and wanted to see how their experience stacked up to the female side of the solar system. 

I make the distinction between divorced dads and single dads of other types because, let’s be honest, divorce is often a long and contentious process. Approaching a new relationship – sexual or otherwise – carries mixed emotions. After all, I’m a divorced woman who’s been through it – from separation to the first year or two in a new “status,” to re-entering those tumultuous dating waters. And having written about sex and the single mom, I wanted to hear from divorced dads.

The data

While I don’t claim to have representative data, I do have input from both sides of the Mississippi and – you guessed it – France.

And my, my, but you dads are discreet! I am impressed. It’s nice to see that most of you do not kiss-and-tell. But you did lend a bit of your experience to my informal queries, which may help some of our single moms know what’s up as we try to decipher your behaviors. So thanks to the dads who provided a few tales and tidbits, which was enough to share what follows.

Booze and booty

• No surprise here, but booty calls are alive and well, including among men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. And yes,  alcohol is often involved.

• Internet booty calls are very popular as an initial method of meet-and-greet, leading to a cocktail or two, and you-know-what.

• When it comes to Internet dating – the visual still rules! That initial photo makes a big difference – for both sides of the gender divide.

• Men do lie about age, height and relationship status; some figure it’s irrelevant, particularly if booty is the objective. (Women do this, too, from the stories I’ve heard from men.)

• Men don’t care so much about a woman’s lies – if they’re just looking for a hook-up.

• If a man likes a woman, honesty is important, right from the start.

“No thanks” is rare, but not unheard of

• Divorced dads can score pretty easily, if they choose to. Not all do.

• Some men seek emotional attachment, or at least a “liking” for the lady before bedding her, and that may take more than a few dates.

• Sex on the first date often means no seconds – date, that is. And generally, it’s a relationship killer.

• Those initial impressions are indelible – resemblance to a photo (if Internet-introduced), scent, voice, smile.

• Getting back in the game isn’t a given; it takes time for re-entry, both to socialize comfortably, or to score.

Hot in bed, luke warm in life

• For many who are newly divorced, it’s all about the sex; for some, it’s an attempt to heal through relationship. (Guys, the same is true for the women I know.)

• Great sex doesn’t require emotional connection, and a great relationship doesn’t guarantee great sex. No scoop here! But we are reminded that sex and love are not one and the same.

• That aside, many intrepid divorced dads are looking for both!

Kids and privacy

• Separation of church and state seems to be the rule. Divorced dads don’t bring someone around to meet their kids unless there’s a relationship. It needn’t have run-off-to-Vegas in the future, but it’s more than a fling.

• Otherwise, sexual adventures are kept out of sight and out of earshot.

• Age of children and custodial arrangements are significant factors in sleepovers and meetings.

Hearts and parts

• For some, experimentation takes priority – sampling many flowers in a variety of gardens may be the norm, for some time after divorce.

• When a man really likes a woman, he takes his time. Or at least, more time, before making a move.

• Long-term divorced dads have left their share of broken hearts, and had theirs shredded a time or two.

• Repeaters abound (to my surprise) – those who continue to fall for women who are guaranteed to break their hearts. (This is not confined to men, or those who are divorced.)

• Preferred parts of the female form are, of course, a matter of personal preference. There are as many ass men as leg men as boob men and small-of-the-back men… well, you get the picture. And dating younger (women), or wanting to, is still verrrrry common.

• Single dads interested in a relationship, if they’re actively involved with their kids, want to date women who are moms; there’s common ground of the most fundamental sort.

• In the population I sampled – late 30s to mid 60s – when the heart is involved, the rest is secondary. Parts are parts, and hearts rule. Maybe we get better with age in more ways than one!

Big Little Wolf’s Daily Plate of Crazy

Not seven, but Slevin.

Set in New York City, the plot focuses on the paths of Slevin Kelevra (Hartnett), Lindsey (Liu), two feuding crime lords known as The Boss (Freeman) and The Rabbi (Kingsley), and a mysterious hitman known as Mr. Goodkat (Willis).

One thing right from the get go of the film is that yu will notice it is a lot like Pulp Fiction. The way of story-telling, screenplay, even sometimes the way it looks, seems too much Tarantino’s masterpiece. However, it is definably not as good.

Basically the whole movie is a con, and it tries to make you, the viewer, understand the con that is going on. I felt a little too jerked around and felt that why should I care so much for the story if I don’t even know where half of the time it’s even going.

The film tries to work its way through acting as a thriller, but it didn’t quite seem that way. I felt like it was a blend of mystery and gangster genre, with a side bit of comedy. But I just didn’t feel like my needs were met as they were suddenly changed right in the middle of the film.

Slevin, has a screenplay that is pretty decent and actually turns out to be kind of witty. I enjoyed how the comedy wasn’t too bad, and it started out great at first but then soon started to drag, but was still fresh. Much of the dialogue is hard to understand since many of these characters seem like all they have are inside jokes and will actually take you a long time to comprehend who and what the joke was.

This film starts to really drag on and end it’s entertainment to me. I didn’t quite know who the good guys were and really didn’t know who to fall behind or anything of that, so I was kind of left scratching my head of who was good and who was bad.

Slevin features an ensemble cast that does actually do their best. Freeman and Kingsley do the best jobs and although their characters seem to be as stereotypes, they still try to work at it and actually put out some pretty good performances. Lucy Liu I felt was really annoying and sometimes changed her personality to really quirky and energetic then suddenly to serious and scared.

The ending to this film really does work out and saves this movie from a demise that could’ve been crucial. At the end all the little parts are explained and about everything comes full circle and it’s really cool to see all that plan out.

Consensus: Lucky Number Slevin tries to be a lot like Pulp Fiction, with it’s story-telling and witty screenplay but starts to fizzle out early but saves itself by the end.

5/10=Rentall!!!!

 Afro Samurai, accompanied by Ninja-Ninja, returns to battle arch-enemy Lady Sio, her band of henchmen, and an unexpected foe that will test the limits of Afro’s endurance!

 Despite being an avid anime fan, I haven’t actually seen the original Spike Afro Samurai series. The animation style of Afro Samurai rather reminds me of an insane combination of Aeon Flux, the World Record segment of The Animatrix, and Samurai Champloo! It’s not odd enough that we have a black samurai with the voice of Samuel L. Jackson, oh no, we have to have insane animations, Lucy Liu doing another voice, African-American culture being spliced into feudal-style Japan, and all the sex and violence you can shake a headband at!

 Yes, it’s way cool. However, not for everyone, especially considering what they showed us at the SDAFF was the unedited directors cut of the movie. I thought it was very strange but quite cool to see men and women dressed in very traditional feudal-era Japanese costumes, dancing to the beat-box rhymes of a huge parade float that was boppin Dre-style beats! Sam Jackson does the voice for both Afro Samurai, when he does speak at all which isn’t often, and for Ninja-Ninja, the sidekick character who seems to be a will o’ the wisp companion of Afro. Lady Sio is voiced by Lucy Liu, who does a more or less fine job for a rather sick and twisted bad guy character. I don’t want to give the whole plot away, so let’s just say Lady Sio’s plan for revenge on Afro is one of the more evil I’ve come across. The movie is very much worth a look, although it might be a bit more comfortable to just own the thing so you can watch it at home, surrounded by friends and alcohol, to cheer on the big bad black man in the number one headband!

 And for an exclusive SDAFF scoop, the guys from Afro Samurai who did a Q&A after the movie confirmed that yes, there will be a live-action Afro Samurai movie starring Sam Jackson!

Totally amazing cartoon, with some of the BEST voices in the business.  I have personally LOVE Dustin Hoffman’s voices in the past, and this movie definitely doesn’t disappoint.  Lucy Liu… Jack Black… man.. *toke* *toke..* What more could you ask for?

I HAD THE NOODLE DREAM!   The animation definitely isn’t Pixar.. but it rocks nonetheless….

Il suo nome è Landa, Hans Landa. È un ufficiale delle SS nell’ultimo film di Tarantino, Bastardi senza gloria. Lo chiamano il cacciatore di ebrei. Un essere così tremendo che dovremmo odiarlo. Eppure no, l’Hans Landa di Christoph Waltz, l’attore austriaco premiato a Cannes per la migliore interpretazione maschile, fa un lavoro che è agli antipodi dell’ufficiale nazista di Ralph Fiennes visto in Schindler’s List. La cattiveria è la stessa, ci mancherebbe. Ma in Landa ci sono molte più sfumature. È un essere multiforme, come le lingue che parla nel film (tedesco, francese, inglese, italiano). Non a caso abbiamo aperto con delle parole che di solito associamo a James Bond: Hans Landa, infatti è cool, è freddo, controllato, ha delle maniere eleganti. Ama la cucina, lo strudel e il latte. È cattivo, cattivissimo. Ma a modo suo – si prenda con le pinze quest’espressione, visto che si tratta di un nazista – è cortese. È cortese con le donne, fino a quando non deve ammazzarle, certo. Hans Landa è cool come lo era il Wolf di Pulp Fiction. Una figura anch’essa ispirata a James Bond.

Questo aspetto ci porta a riflettere su tutti i cattivi di Tarantino. Che in fondo non ci hanno mai spaventato, ma quasi sempre fatto sorridere. In realtà, se ci pensiamo, nei primi film di Tarantino, non ci sono veri e propri cattivi, almeno per come siamo abituati a considerarli negli schemi classici del cinema. Nel contesto a-morale de Le iene e Pulp Fiction, non ci sono cattivi perché non ci sono buoni. Perché tutti i personaggi del film sono impegnati in azioni negative. Ne Le iene, tutti hanno preso parte a una rapina. C’è chi ha un po’ più di cuore, il Mr. Orange di Tim Roth, (ma è un poliziotto infiltrato) e chi è una vera bestia, il Mr. Blond (che si chiama Vic Vega, ed è il fratello del Vincent Vega di Pulp Fiction) di Michael Madsen, protagonista della scena cult, la sadica tortura a un poliziotto sulle note di Stuck In The Middle With You degli Stealer’s Wheel. Ma è proprio questa sequenza che ci ha messo subito in guardia: è tutta ironia, e la cattiveria è solo apparente. Anche i cattivi sono qui per divertirci.

Anche in Pulp Fiction lo scenario non cambia. E infatti Vincent Vega e Jules Winnfield sono vestiti come le iene del film precedente. Li vediamo entrare in scena mentre parlano di massaggi ai piedi e di patatine e maionese. Potranno mai farci paura? Certo, sono dei killer, e nel film uccidono pure. Ma l’interpretazione di John Travolta e Samuel L. Jackson è ironica, sopra le righe, molto meno realistica rispetto al tono de Le iene. E così i due ci sono subito simpatici. Chi spaventa, per la perfidia con cui si parla di lui, è il boss dei boss, il Marsellus Wallace di Ving Rhames. Ma, dopo aver visto come è uscito dalla cantina del sadico Zed, ci fa quasi tenerezza. Forse il personaggio meno cattivo è il Butch di Bruce Willis, ma si tratta sempre di qualcuno che ha truccato un incontro di boxe.

Stesso discorso per la Jackie Brown, che dà il titolo al film omonimo, interpretata da Pam Grier. È forse la prima “buona” del cinema di Tarantino, il primo personaggio con il quale lo spettatore prova una certa empatia. Ma è pur sempre una hostess che fa il corriere della droga. Accanto a lei ci sono dei cattivi: l’Ordell di Samuel L. Jackson, il Louis di Robert De Niro, e il poliziotto di Michael Keaton. Tutti troppo ridicoli, fessi, rintronati o stanchi per far paura. Così come Stuntman Mike, interpretato dalla “iena” per eccellenza, Kurt Russell, villain di Grindhouse, è una figura che ci ispira simpatia: osservate il suo sguardo in macchina e il suo sorriso, e ditemi se non è così.

Non sono cattivi, i “villain” di Tarantino. È che li disegnano così. E solo un gran disegnatore di personaggi come Tarantino può creare figure simili.

A dire il vero, forse, i veri cattivi stanno in Kill Bill, il suo film più crudo e, in fondo, meno giocoso. Bill e le sue vipere sono gli unici veri cattivi del cinema di Tarantino: un uomo capace di uccidere la sua ex compagna, per di più incinta, nel giorno del suo matrimonio, è la vera iena.

Uno che è capace di tentare ancora di ucciderla, dopo un ameno discorso sui supereroi, con la figlia a pochi metri di distanza.

David Carradine, nel ruolo di Bill, è il vero “bastardo senza gloria” del cinema di Tarantino. E le sue vipere non sono da meno O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), Vernita Green (Vivica Fox), Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) e Budd (di nuovo Michael Madsen), sono tutte persone efferate, che siamo contenti di veder morire.

Non come Vincent Vega, che si fa beffare come un fessacchiotto uscendo dal cesso. Ma come Goebbels, Hitler e tutti i nazisti. Sì, tra i cattivi di Tarantino c’è anche un Hitler caricaturale e pop, che il regista raffigura come un simbolo. Del male. Ma anche della stupidità.

According to Variety, ABC plans to bring the 70’s TV series back for a new remake. The article mentions that series creator, Aaron Spelling, attempted to revive the series once in 1988 with Fox and again in 2004 with ABC but both deals fell through.

The feature film version of “Charlie’s Angels” (2000) which starred Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz was a box office hit and it even garnered a sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”. However, in my opinion the sequel was not as good as the first film.

Josh Friedman (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”), original “Charlie’s Angels” producer Leonard Goldberg, and Drew Barrymore are expected to executive produce the new adaptation along with Nancy Juvonen.
