With 2011 quickly drawing to a close, the onslaught of “Best Of” lists is already well underway (don’t worry, XLR8R‘s contributions will begin popping up next week), and although it’s unlikely that Om Unit (a.k.a. Jim Coles) is going to be pulling down a ton of accolades, that has less to do with the quality of his output, and more to do with the fact that the London producer has kept a relatively low profile while having himself a very solid year. Fresh off his turn as a participant at this year’s Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, the man just dropped the Transport EP, his second release of the year for the Civil Music imprint. Apart from making beats, he also pilots his own label, Cosmic Bridge Records, and has recently remixed the likes of Starkey, Shigeto, Take, Pixelord, and many others. As such, Om Unit seemed like the perfect candidate to put together the final XLR8R podcast of 2011, an opportunity he used to showcase his unique take on some sounds that have become very familiar as of late. Last week’s podcast from Africa Hitech found the UK duo combining footwork and jungle, and Om Unit spends much of this exclusive mix engaging in similar genre-blending trickery. But where Africa Hitech offered harsh, rough-and-tumble sounds, Om Unit goes heavy on the melody, serving up a much dreamier listen, an effect heightened by his extended detours into slower tempos. At this point, it’s hard to put an original spin on the myriad of sounds championed by the world of so-called “bass music,” but on this podcast, Om Unit has managed to do exactly that.

The first artist in their roster that came to my attention, heRobust, makes West Coast-style post-Dilla future funk that should make Dâm-Funk weep, while Luisterwaar rolls up a flawless mixture of Glitch-Hop, Dubstep and BoC Boom-Bap like a German Flying Lotus with an 8-bit preoccupation.

On Saturate’s two newest releases, Krampfhaft delivers a frenetic amalgam of UK Funky, Juke and Electro…

while Acre’s Paths proves to be a six-track block of blippy, obsidian-hewn dubstep, the lovechild of Hyperdub and Jahtari.

With so many accomplished EP’s and full lengths (all of which can be streamed here, with a number being available on a pay-what-you-will basis, and others for just a few of your real or converted Euros) in just the time since last December, Saturate! seems to be out to win the 2011 Electronic Music Olympics. Keep an ear out for more.

I woke up this morning, with a slight hungover, to find an email in the inbox from Gordon of Project: Mooncircle telling me he had a guest mix for us. Always a pleasant surprise when good friends of ours get in touch like this, even more when it’s someone like Gordon who we’ve worked with for years now ever since the beginnings of both Rhythm Incursions and Project: Mooncircle back in the early/mid 00s. Regular listeners will no doubt be familiar with the label’s output – releases from the label are a common feature in our monthly shows and we’ve had quite a few of their artists guest on the show in the past (click here for a run down). So to finally have Gordon, the man behind the label, step up for a guest mix is nice. Actually if memory serves me right Gordon did do a guest spot for us back in 05 when Waxfactor presented the first Project:Mooncircle special which was also one of the first podcasts we did, back when Rhythm Incursions was a bi weekly show on Resonance FM. So nearly 6 years on (damn time flies) Gordon steps up again with a selection across the board featuring the likes of Headshotboyz, Shlohmo, Lapalux, Teebs, Quendolinfender, Capella, Coco Bryce, fLako, Koreless, DZA, Luisterwaar, Ital Tek, Jehst, Joe Kickass, Killing Skills, CYNE, Gards From KC, Evil Ed and more… The mix features a fair few unreleased/forthcoming bits and there is no tracklist aside from the above artists mention.
