Just sayin’.

This is an article I found on the Internet… I know how wild “the Internet” it’s an old one but funny enough. Featured on Cracked.com Someone (Steve Kiley) out there in the far off time of 2005 (December 15th) decided he would write an homoerotic fantasy of the supposed homosexual exploits of C-3PO from a first person point of view. Yet another chapter in the Gay Golden Robot theory out there… also a Freudian field day with the author. It was an entertaining read though so without further ado; I present to you:

C3PO Comes Clean

I must say that the impending destruction of the Death Star is a bit troubling. Sure, from the outside it is an architectural monstrosity, but the interior is quite elegantly designed. The window treatments in the Vader suite are simply breathtaking!

I’m such a bitch, I can’t believe I told you I’ve been to the Vader suite! OK, well if you must know, before all this war craziness started again, Lord Vader and I were almost an item. It was back when the Dark Side was at its peak and he held a little cocktail party. Everybody was there: Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt, Ula the Dancing Girl-you name ‘em!

After a couple of white wine spritzers, Vader was all over me. A bit of a lightweight with the booze, between you and I. The things he said to me that night…

“C-3PO, I hear that gold is a very pliable metal.”

“You, me, a bottle of Dom and lot of WD-40. We’ll put on a little Neal Diamond and I’ll let you wear my cape.”

“I hope one of the six million languages you speak is a naughty one.”

All with that heavy breathing. I nearly blew a fuse.

Our little affair never happened. Vader switched to Scotch and started his ventriloquist choking act. He killed eight storm troopers that night. Such a diva.

The next few weeks he acted all butch so that everyone would forget what a slut he was at the party. Everywhere I went, he mocked the way I walked. Every time I entered a room, he would announce the presence of the “resident golden queer.”

When the chance came to hitch a ride off that negativity train with the adorable Leia, I jumped on it. Leia is a good person. That being said, her choice of wardrobe and hairstyle is fucking ridiculous.

The ride off of the ship was a pleasant one, as the lovely R2D2 was at my side. For all of his annoying ‘bleeps’ and ‘bloops’ and his insistence that robots with wheels have no sexual preference, that little guy is the perfect height for a vigorous face fucking!

Little did I know, my travels would soon connect me with the gorgeous Luke Skywalker. I think I am in love. I have had a tough time letting my guard down after the Vader fiasco. The good news with Luke is that judging from his attire, feathered hair and delicate features, he’ got to be out of the closet.

Many of the fellas coo over that bad boy Hans Solo and say he is queer as a three-dollar galactic credit, but I fear he’ just along for the ride. I see the way he looks at Leia. Plus, his dog Chewbacca is entirely too big for him to be gay.

The gang is sad about the demise of Obi-Wan. Not me. That British queen made more passes at me than Elizabeth II around the moors. I needed a few days and a good welder after one weekend on the same ship with him.

The thing about Jedis is that they’ll fuck anything. And let’ face facts, a Jedi can claim he’ straight, or has sworn an oath to this or that, but it’ all a front. There was that scandal with the
little boys all those years back-some say that is why young Anakin turned into such a bitch in his teens. God only knows what Obi Wan did to him on all those long journeys to the Degoba System.

Let’ just say I’ve been servant to some of the greatest Jedis and there’ a reason why I walk so
funny today.

Tomorrow is the big day. Luke and the gang will fly off to destroy the evil, but smartly decorated Death Star. I wish them well. Their plan looks so complicated. They need to penetrate the exterior of the well-mounded evil orb. Then they have to forge ahead until the see the gaping hole. One good shot right up the hole and into a long canal will make that ship explode with delight”¦ er, I mean blow it to bits.

I just know that Young Skywalker can hit that money shot.

On Thursdays I have Reading and Writing Poetry with The Big Name in the Creative Writing Department. No one will deny that The Big Name knows what she’s talking about because she actually wrote the book on writing poetry, but that just makes the sting all the worse when you get your poem back riddled with comments like:

“Why the torturous syntax?”

“We, as readers, are given no indication that the speaker is trying to dig below the surface at all.”

“A pyrrhic/spondee pairing? That’s comical.”

Pyrrhic/spondee pairing? I can’t even take her insults at face value, I have to go to the back of her book and look these terms up in her glossary. As it turns out, the pyrrhic and the spondee are metrical feet with specific stressed and unstressed patterns. But I am meter-deaf. Everything looks iambic to me. It’s like making fun of a blind guy because his socks don’t match. You don’t do that.

But this Thursday, I couldn’t face The Big Name. I only got four hours of sleep the night before, and her class is at nine-thirty. I got four hours of sleep because I saw Paranormal Activity Monday night, and since then, the only way I can fall asleep is by watching episodes of South Park until the point of exhaustion (to keep my mind off of the demon that may or may not be standing right next to my bed). But I don’t make a habit of skipping classes, so I shower and dance around my room to Beck’s “Debra” on repeat until I am ready to face the day.

I am not the only one who is afraid of The Big Name. When I arrive that morning, munching what is left of a candy bar that I was too terrified to finish during Paranormal Activity, another student is turning the clock a few minutes ahead. She informs those of us who are present that she is doing this because The Big Name uses that clock, and this way, we can get out a few minutes earlier.

The Big Name arrives in a flurry of papers a few minutes late, and apologizes for being later than normal. She’s not, but the clock tells her she is. Everyone watches as she moves to a seat on the far side of the table. The kids on that end tense up, afraid she will smell the TV on them. The Big Name is very glad she doesn’t own a TV anymore. She told me so herself.

She begins to read her favorite lines from our imitations of Milton’s Paradise Lost. I don’t even get my hopes up. I wrote my imitation about Luke Skywalker’s duel with Darth Vader at Cloud City. I used a metaphor involving the word “asteroid.” The only way she might find my poem charming would be if she mistook it for  a Biblical allusion.

There is a major disparity between those things which The Big Name deems as having merit and the things I deem as having merit. She loves all poems about famous ballerinas, Greek epics, and classic operas. I know no famous ballerinas, although I know that Degas painted them a lot. I have read The Iliad and The Odyssey, I have seen Disney’s Hercules, but my knowledge of classical literature (and cinema) stops there. I have also seen the cinematic version of The Phantom of the Opera, but I have no urge to write poetry about any of these things.

While I don’t wholly expect The Big Name to deem Star Wars as having merit, I did expect her to know who The Lorax was. She didn’t. Which meant my Petrachan Sonnet titled “The Lorax of Old Maxwell Street” meant nothing to her. She also has never heard of Doubt. In one poem I referenced a bass guitar. She asked me if I meant “a bass fiddle.”

Before class ends, The Big Name informs me a poem that I wrote is so heavily enjambed that it is impossible to discern the meter. I determine that this is like telling a guy in a wheelchair that his top bookshelves need dusting. I write this down in my list of similes that I think The Big Name would positively hate right below “dander flying up off the dog, glinting in the sunlight – like snowfall in reverse.” The Big Name has noted that many of my poems involve “too much detritus.”

Class adjourns four minutes ahead of schedule, and I am left unscathed, save that stab about enjambment.

This product was announced last week, and although it doesn’t make me feel as weak as Fetish Tots did, it still borders “What-the-Fuck-is-Mattel-Thinking?” Ville, therefore still rendering me InASense, Lost.

The “toy” goes bi by this official name: Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken.  They might have well placed the word Super in there, too.

The dog's name is Sugar, and Ken is his "daddy"... none of this is helping...

Mattel claims that it’s a part of their adult toy line, which I 100% believe.  And it’s not like the neutered doll was ever a hero of mine, like how G.I. Joe’s Shipwreck or Star Wars’ (duh) Luke Skywalker were (pictured below).

A Real American Hetero!

But this fact remains: it gives me the Malibu Dream Heebie Jeebies.  The last time I felt this weird and twisted inside because of a toy was when I learned that Dr. Claw (the unseen bad guy in Inspector Gadget) looked like this:

Come to think of it, he had MAD Cat as a pet, so he was MAD Car's "daddy". And his hair looks fabulous... Perhaps Ken could give him a ring sometime? Perhaps.

So, the New York Yankees won the World Series, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 Wednesday night to lock up the 27th championship title in franchise history.  Big surprise.

For the victory parade, they should have blasted John Williams’ “Imperial March” over the P.A. system.  I can almost see Steinbrenner looking on from the window of a posh NYC hotel suite, wheezing inside his Darth Vader mask, taunting every small-market MLB team: “If you only knew the power of the Dark Side!”

I find the outcome of the Series frustrating, especially since I have great respect for the Phillies.  Ryan Howard is an absolute stud; however, he’s no Luke Skywalker.

Why is Harry Potter such a successful hero? It’s certainly not because he’s a great wizard, because he’s not. He struggles through most of his classes, he fails all sorts of tasks, he’s often a poor student, he has enemies among the teachers and students, and despite his pedigree he spends more time being feared or hated than loved.

In fact, the only things he is consistently good at are sports (Quidditch) and asking Hermione for help on his homework, which pretty much makes him a dumb jock, as high school cliches go.

But Harry is a charismatic leader. He’s a good friend, usually. And it is easy to forgive his shortcomings because he does spend an awful lot of time trying not to be killed by the most powerful and evil people in the world.

Why is Luke Skywalker a successful hero? He is not particularly good with the Force, and he’s not particularly good with a lightsaber, judging by the state of his right hand. He’s just a better-than-average pilot with a strong moral compass, who spends an awful lot of time trying not to be killed by the most powerful and evil people in the galaxy.

Harry and Luke are good heroes because, despite their super-special places in their respective worlds, they are very average people. They struggle through the hum-drum of life just like we do: romance, peer pressure, hero worship, education, career planning, etc. In fact, the only reason we want to watch/read them is because they are relatable people living in fantastical worlds surrounded by fantastical characters.

Which brings us to Mary Sue. A Mary Sue is a character who is too good, too perfect. Examples include Star Trek’s Wesley Crusher, the boy genius who can instantly solve any problem, and X-Men’s Wolverine, the indestructible badass who became cooler and cooler because his fans insisted that he was cool. (How’s that for logical character development?) And while some fans will say Batman is the ultimate Mary Sue because he knows everything and has a tool or plan for every situation, I would say Superman is the ultimate Mary Sue because he has every superpower, and yet is still a “nice guy.”

A Mary Sue often is (or at least looks like) a character designed purely for the author’s wish fulfillment. It amounts to a fanboy gone wild. The character is just too super-awesome for words. Imagine what it would be like if Harry Potter woke up not as a struggling wizard-to-be but as the most uber-powerful sorceror in the History of Ever! He’d be boring and unrelatable. If Luke Skywalker wandered off the moisture farm and suddenly turned into an uber-Jedi, capable of battling Sith warriors and crushing planets with his mind,would we care? Every second that passed in which they didn’t destroy Voldemort or Darth Vader would seem silly.

Fortunately, I do not grapple with the problem of creating uber-perfect wish fullfillment characters. I have the opposite problem. I default to creating incredibly bland characters who I find interesting because I put them in stressful or fantastical situations. My ongoing struggle is to give each of my characters at least one attribute that is, well, cool.

And if you are reading this right now with the sneaking suspicion that you may have created a Mary Sue, try this Mary Sue litmus test to find out.

I’d like to just say for the record, I had this entire post written and ready when WordPress decided it didn’t want to save my draft. I’m very bitter about this WordPress. Should you consider to misbehave, I will give Blogger a call and see what IT has to offer me. Now… onto our regularly scheduled programming.

Star Wars

The holy trifecta of sci-fi/fantasy. Love them or hate them, the original trilogy changed our beloved genre forever. It wasn’t just the stunning special effects or the nifty, albeit often horrendously ugly creatures that populated worlds we’d never dreamed of. It was the brilliant story.

We’ve often heard Lucas say in interviews that Star Wars came about as a melding of many aspects of mythology and legend. He took classic characters, archetypes, and set them on an epic journey. Except instead of the traditional forests or kings or sword fights, we were upgraded to a galaxy far far away, desert planets and blizzard lands, emperors who had knowledge of the force and light sabers. It was the ultimate battle of good vs evil. Definitely a sweeping saga of the likes we’d never seen.

There was the mentor, as is usual in such stories, only he died in the first movie. There was the damsel in distress who could hold a blaster better than our hero and who had a witty sense of humor to boot. By the third movie, our morally ambigious thug had become a knight, our hero did not get the girl (because ew, she was his sister) and we discovered that our iconic villain had more layers than we could have imagined. He’s not your typical bad guy- he’s full of shades of grey. Fascinating and wonderfully unexpected.

On top of the dynamic writing, the movies are visually stunning to watch. There is no doubt in my mind that this entire universe lived and breathed in Lucas’ mind because it is one of the most fully realized I’ve ever had the pleasure to see. I loved every moment of this series. It has everything I look for in good fantasy- a likeable and sympathetic hero, light comedy, a compelling backstory, romance, action, and ambigious characters (especially villains). Overall, I give it a very high: A+.

Star Wars: A New Hope 

As much as I love Star Wars, I have to admit that Luke Skywalker is a whiny little baby. When he doesn’t get his way he whines and complains to his uncle. Those restrictions seem to be ruining his life.

We find out later that destiny had other plans. How different would the story have been if he had gone? The stormtroopers would have picked up the droids, he would have stayed living with Lars and Beru, and the Empire would get back their plans. Roll credits. As much as we dislike Luke’s whining, life gives us our own moments when we complain about the unfairness of the hand we were dealt. Sure, we may not be quite as obnoxious as the adolescent Skywalker, but we have all had something go wrong that makes us question the ways and whys of life. Disease, the death of a loved one, loss of a job- each of these deliver a blow to our world order.

I don’t believe the pat response that God only gives us what we can handle. While that may work for some, it doesn’t work for me. I don’t find value in the view of a god who would willingly inflict pain to make us stronger or teach us a lesson. But I do believe that the Universe has plans for each of us that we don’t understand. And sometimes those plans conflict with what we believe is our destiny.

It’s easy to get lost in your own idea of how your life should be. When bad things happen, or even if our own expectations are not met, we shouldn’t see them as a punishment or a universal no to our request. It’s just that something else is planned for us. We may not know what that is. We may never know what that is, but you need to look at the circumstances of your life as a whole and not focus on the one situation that isn’t working at the moment.

That’s easier said than done. It’s easy to get myopic in the midst of pain. When presented with a challenge in life that throws us for a loop, we need to remember to step back and look beyond the present moment. Maybe we can’t do what we want with our current circumstances, but that doesn’t mean we never will. Maybe it’s not our time yet, or if we are given what we think we want now, we’ll miss the true opportunity for happiness later. We can play an active role in fulfilling our destiny, but it may be that there’s something greater waiting for us around the corner. Your trip to Tosche Station may prevent you from accepting your accolades at Yavin. Trust the Universe to be your partner in reaching the full potential of your extraordinary life.

The coolest X-Wing yet!
One can never have too many X-Wings. This Lego set is another excellent rendition of one of the Star Wars universe’s best ships. It is bigger than the original X-Wing from 1999, and has a greater level of detail. Though it does not come with the other stuff like the 1999 set, it does come with many more Lego figures, including Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2-D2 and, for the first time, Wedge! This set also gives you the opportunity to change some of the ship’s marking, so you can convert it from Luke’s X-Wing to Wedge’s X-Wing.

The ship is very sturdy, and the length is longer than expected. The wings move up and down via a turning dial in the back. This gives you more control of where you want the wings to sit, so you can pose it however you want. There is also a place to store the lightsaber and the cockpit is hinged so you can open it.

Overall, this is might be the best X-Wing yet. The 437 pieces will take a few hours at the most to build, but it is well worth it. It is a great Lego model, and even if you own earlier versions of the other X-Wings, this one should be a welcome addition to your collection.
