[Jukka] wanted a bike light that wasn’t afraid to go into the woods during the dark winter. He put together a lamp that uses eight 3 Watt LEDs to pump out 1680 lumens (english translation). The high power LEDs were mounted on a large aluminum heat sink and use lenses to optimize the beam of light. The system uses a 2 amp driver board that he assembled himself. Power is provided by sixteen AA Nickel Metal Hydride batteries that are housed along with the driver circuit in a water bottle.

This more than doubles the output of the last bike light we thought was too bright. Where will this lumen-arms-race stop?

Been on the Pico Projector sidelines? Not too sure of the real value proposition of these tiny pocket projectors that place a beamed image anywhere—yes anywhere, like the back of a tortilla at your favorite River Walk haunt during Display Week (see image.)

Steve Sechrist
Senior Analyst and Editor

Well get ready for what may be the “make or break” test for this nascent display category as iPhone accessory maker PhoneSuit is about to launch a cool (really cool) looking pico projector with an industrial design worthy of the top selling Smartphone. So cool in fact, we think it’s likely to chart the path to a whole new generation of pico projection accessory devices.

Hey, how can a 10 lumen SD resolution (480p) LCoS/LED based pico projector (with on-board battery) for the iPod/iPhone do all that you may ask? One look at the product helps to answer the question. Until now, these pico devices lay flat on a table, or required hand held operation. Neither is a good option for a stable display. The MiLo Pro industrial design offers a flip open clam-shell style with a kick-stand like arm that positions the tiny projector forward, while cradling the iPhone (iTouch, iPod) at just the right angle to serve up the image. Beyond the iPhone cradle, key features include touchpad, speaker, a separate VGA input (for RCA jack), and USB output. And we think this is just the beginning.

But cool (functional) industrial design is just part of the solution. To make it in the market, the enabling device must find its “killer app” and for now, no one can say what that may be. But with the cornucopia of application choices out there, the killer app may just be the access to iPhone apps itself.

With a recent new “3GS” iPhone product launch that hit the one million sales mark in its opening weekend, new lower-priced models, and more importantly – one billion application downloads to its credit, hitching the pico projector to the iPhone / iTunes / iPod star may be just the thing to push this category beyond the early adopter stage and land it square into the mainstream market. We’ll see.

NECC is the biggest edu-tech conference each year. This year it’s in Washington DC. Turning 10,000 educators loose on the Capital Mall should be awesome.

This is going to be my 7th NECC. From my first with Apple in Chicago they’ve all been a lot of fun, but attending in DC is going to be incredible. I’ll be there with Lumens, and they are going to be showing off some very cool new visual presenters for the first time. If you would like to see them stop by booth#3248, or send me an email.

There are always an incredible amount of events at NECC, some of the best for me have been the accompanying EduBloggerCon events that run right before the show. This year it is on the Saturday before. Check it out and if you’re going drop me a note and we can hopefully catch up.

that you help a new client receive positive media coverage.

In this case, the new client is Lumens. They make visual presenters. What are those? Think of the overhead projector when you were a kid. Put that on steroids. Add the ability record audio and video with one button, hook it up to an HD monitor and project in HD1080. It’s a big, big jump.

This week, Lumens introduced the PS660. The first HD1080 projector priced under $2,000.

Casio’s just unveiled a new range of Pro-Series projectors which looks
slightly different from any projector on the market – they are the
XJ-SC200 and XJ-S50 series. Casio claims that these are the industry’s
slimmest projectors, and they share the following specifications :-

    * XGA (1,024 × 768) resolution

* 2,500 and 3,000 ANSI lumens

* DLP projection engine

* VGA input

Selected models will include a USB port for you to stick in an
optional WiFi receiver. You can pick up this new projector line from
Casio this August onwards with prices ranging from $1,299 to $1,599.

The SureFire U2 Ultra Variable Power LED Flashlight has a 5-watt LED and six selectable levels of brightness, ranging from 2 to 100 lumens. The brightest setting is multiple times brighter than my large Maglite flashlight.

The U2 Ultra tailcap switch can be pressed for momentary-on and pressed further to click constant-on. A set of batteries can last up to 40 hrs of continuous use on the low brightness setting, see specifications below. I looked in both the manual and website but could not find how long a set of batteries will last on the brightest level. So, I bet it’s not very long.

SPECIFICATIONS

Various bezel fitters (red, blue, infrared, opaque, diffusion, and traffic wand) are available to expand the U2’s usability.

What might surprise some of you (this fact certainly amazed me…..) is the cost of these SureFire flashlights. At $279 for the U2 Ultra and $299 for the Kroma, they are the most expensive flashlights I have ever heard of. Last month I did a review of the BriteStrike Tactical Illumination Tool and while it is a very nice flashlight, I have to say both SureFire flashlights are definitely a step-up in quality. I also went to visit my local Fry’s, Fred Meyer’s and Walmart stores to see what type of selection of LED flashlights were available. All of these retail stores had many (10+) LED flashlights varying in size from small to moderate and ranging in cost from $10 to $50. But none these appeared to have near the quality of materials and construction or durability of the Kroma and U2 Ultra.

All that being said, if you have the need for a small compact flashlight that has the ability to produce white, red, and blue (Kroma), selectable levels of brightness (U2 Ultra), or if money is no object; you should consider a SureFire flashlight.

Follow this step-by-step article, and you won’t go wrong. 1. Low-cost PROJECTORs normally make

Follow this step-by-step article, and you won’t go wrong.

1. Low-cost PROJECTORs normally make two main sacrifices. The brightness, which is measured in ANSI lumens, will be relatively low, and the native resolution will be limited to 800×600. Neither one of these will be serious drawbacks providing you lower your room lights, draw the blinds, and there isn’t too much detail in your slides. Home cinemas definitely do not require anything more. Movie enthusiasts are more likely to be concerned with the lamp life and replacement cost.

2. Image quality is obviously important but very hard to test based on specifications. A high contrast (500:1 or above) ratio adds depth to the picture and is one substantial benefit of PROJECTORs based on digital light processing (DLT), as opposed to the older LCD technology. Do keep in mind though; the optics and color balance cannot be assessed without consulting a review.

3. Where you will be using your PROJECTOR also needs to be put into question. Size and weight are obviously very important if you’ll be moving the piece around a lot. If portability is a factor, aim for a PROJECTOR that is less than 3kg. Small rooms will demand a quiet (below 33dB) PROJECTOR with a flexible throw distance – or how close or far away the screen must be. Most PROJECTORs can rotate or mirror their image to cope with ceiling mounting or rear projection.

4. Make sure the PROJECTOR you are looking at covers all the signals you might want to feed it with. Common video formats are supported by almost all PROJECTORs, but high-resolution VGA signals aren’t. High quality pictures will only display at their best only on pricier PROJECTORs, with a 1,024×768 native resolution.

5. Top-of-the-range PROJECTORs have 2,000 ANSI lumens brightness or more to overpower brightly lit rooms. They also come with a handful of useful features that make presentations look and sound slicker, as well as making it easier for the presenter. Anti-theft features may also be something worth looking into.

6. After sales Warranty and support is definitely a must, especially for the heavier users. Make sure you have access to bulb replacements (or replacement service).

Recommended Minimum Specs-

Native Resolution: 800×600 Brightness: 1,100 ANSI Lumens Contrast Ration: 500:1 Lamp Life: 2,000 hours Check: Weight, throw distance and noise.

There is a new happy hour bar just down the street from my office that was getting a lot of buzz, so I decided to check it out. It is in an wold brick building and they left the walls exposed so it has that rustic modern look. However one of the coolest aspects of the place was the hi-def projector they had showing the game on the wall. Although it was daylight still, I was amazed at how clear the picture was on the wall. In fact I didn’t even notice it was a projected image at first, until I noticed there was not TV set connected to the picture. More and more home theaters are moving to this new technology and the best part is that when the projector is off…you get your wall back. No longer do you need an entire wall to devote to TV 100% of the time. Apparently if you are going to do this, you want a projector with 700 lumens (the brightness of the bulb) or more. That will give you enough power to project onto a 10 foot area in HD. These things have sure come along way from the pesky office partner of the power point presentation. Prices can range from $900 to $3000. This site will break it all down for you.

Last night was the opening for Lumens. Everything went amazingly! Both spaces looked beautiful and the internet site (http://transition.turbulence.org/Works/newadams/lumens/) launched successfully. Lots of people came out in support – my family even made out here. As the sun went down the lamps really looked spectacular. The show will running through October 31st.

A crowd favorite was the creepy baby doll lamp.

Marianne showing the Lumens website to the owner of T&A Tools located right down the street from Greylock Arts in Adams. He donated one of his handmade lamps made from race car tires.

All of my fellow B-HIP interns showed up to support the show and to listen to Marianne and Matthew talk a little bit about what goes into developing and creating a project of this scale.

Erin and I posing for pictures in front of all the lamps. It was really gratifying to see this exhibition have a successful and beautiful opening. Kudos to all the artists involved (Mathew Belanger, Sean Riley, and Ven Voisey) and thanks to all who donated their time and lamps!

The past week(s) leading up to the opening have been pretty intense. Everyone has been putting in lots of time to get the Greylock Arts space, the North Adams space and the internet space ready for the opening.

This is a great example of what it is like trying to prep all the lamps to light up and work together. Can you spot Matthew?

Once again, here is Larry Alice helping Matthew with the programming (which can be a tedious process in tight spaces) of all the boxes. Here he is in one of the front windows of Greylock Arts.
