Ajattelu ei tapahdu vain pään sisällä. Ajattelun ammattilainen hyödyntää ajatustyössään myös monenla

Ajattelu ei tapahdu vain pään sisällä. Ajattelun ammattilainen hyödyntää ajatustyössään myös monenlaisia apuvälineitä muistivihkoista miellekarttoihin. Nykyaikana yhä merkittävämpää osaa ajattelutyöstä kannattelevat monenlaiset tietokoneohjelmistot ja nettisivustot. Esittelen tässä seitsemän lyömätöntä ajattelun ammattilaisen digitaalista työkalua.

Nämä ohjelmat ja nettisivustot auttavat sinua muistamaan aivan kaiken, synnyttämään globaalin, kollektiivisen alitajunnan, opiskelemaan huippuyliopistoissa, altistamaan itsesi ennennäkemättömällä tavalla maailman uutisille, keskittymään häiriöttä kirjoittamiseen, pitämään dokumenttisi järjestyksessä ja treenaamaan mielesi kesäkuntoon.

1. Evernote: Lisämuisti mielellesi
www.evernote.com

Ylivoimainen ykkönen kaikista ajattelun softa-avuista on runsas vuosi sitten julkaistu muistiinpano-ohjelmisto Evernote. Evernote vaikuttaa ensi silmäyksellä vaatimattomasti digitaaliselta muistivihkolta.

Näille älypuhelimille on julkaistu omat Evernote-ohjelmansa.

Toisekseen, Evernoteen pystyy rakentamaan moniulotteisia muistiinpanomatriiseja.

2. Twitter: Kollektiivinen alitajunta
www.twitter.com

Myös Twitterin kohdalla ensivaikutelma pettää. Ensi silmäyksellä Twitter vaikuttaa irralliselta Facebookin tilapäivitykseltä, jolla tuntuu olevan käyttöä vain teini-ikäisille kahvitteluseuraa kaipaaville ja Ashton Kutcher -faneille. Tosiasiassa Twitter on kuitenkin yksi hämmästyttävimpiä verkottumistyökaluja, mitä on toistaiseksi keksitty. Oikein säädettynä Twitter toimii fantastisena kollektiivisena alitajuntanasi.

3. iTunes U: Huippuyliopisto kotikatsomossa
www.apple.com/education/mobile-learning/

Applen iTunes University on fantastinen tiedon aarreaitta. iTunes U:sta voit ladata koneellesi kokonaisia lukuvuoden pituisia luentosarjoja maailman huippuyliopistoista. Vielä kolmisen vuotta sitten tähän oppiin pääsi käsiksi vain pulittamalla satojen tuhansien taalojen lukuvuosimaksut. Tarjolla on luentoja Yalesta, Cambridgesta, UC Berkeleystä, Stanfordista…

www.igoogle.com

Alan Mooren klassikkosarjakuvassa Watchmen maailman fiksuimmaksi mieheksi tituleerattu Ozymandias vietti mielellään aikaa televisioilla peitetyn seinän edessä. Televisiot näyttivät ohjelmaa muutamia sekunteja kerrallaan, ja näin Ozymandias kykeni muodostamaan nopeasti kattavan intuitiivisen käsityksen siitä, mitä maailmalla tapahtuu. Tiettävästi myös Spede Pasanen harrasti samanlaista monen television tuijottelua. Vaikka kymmenien televisiokanavien yhtäaikainen seuraaminen voikin olla ahdistava kokemus, on itse ajatus uutisoinnin kattavasta seuraamisesta kiehtova.

iGoogle on Googlen personalisoitava etusivu. iGoogleen voi asentaa kaikenlaisia härpäkkeitä peleistä Gmail-tiliisi. Erityisen käytännöllinen sivustosta tulee, kun lataat siihen monipuolisesti erilaisia uutispalveluita: Hesari, BBC, CNN, New York Times, Le Monde, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera, Fox News, Dagens nyheter…

5. Writeroom: Keskity kirjoittamiseesi
www.hogbaysoftware.com

Kirjoittaminen on sitä miellyttävämpää, mitä paremmin pystyt keskittymään itse kirjoittamiseen. Writeroom keskittyy olennaiseen: tekstiin ruudulla.

Yep on PDF-tiedostojen lajitteluohjelma.

7. Lumosity: Jumppaa aivosi kesäkuntoon
www.lumosity.com

Lumosity on Stanfordin yliopistossa kehitetty erinomainen aivojumppasivusto.

I spent time recently with Lisa Schoonerman, the co-founder and CEO of VibrantBrains. VibrantBrains

I spent time recently with Lisa Schoonerman, the co-founder and CEO of VibrantBrains. VibrantBrains is a San Francisco Bay-area company that sells and administers cognitive exercises or “brain fitness” activities for the aging from two retail locations. Lisa and her business partner each have personal stakes in the field of brain plasticity and improvement. Lisa’s mom was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (see) and consequently Lisa became interested in how she might be able to avoid the condition herself. Lisa’s business partner and co-founder suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident and underwent extensive neurological rehabilitation and retraining.

I asked Lisa to explain to me the assortment and usefulness of the various computer-based cognition products available today, since the market is relatively new but expanding swiftly. She and I sat down in one of her stores, snacked on a bowl of walnuts (excellent brain food) and Lisa obligingly answered my questions. Here’s what I discovered:

A handful of companies around the world have developed computer or device-based brain fitness products. Posit Science is one such company, with an auditory processing exercise that it calls Brain Fitness, and a separate visual processing product that it calls Insight, which has also been developed into a driving acuity product called DriveSharp. Each of these products sells as a shrink wrapped, take-it-home, product. Brain Fitness and Insight cost $395.00 and Insight – with its more limited benefit – costs $129.00.

Cognifit delivers its cognitive improvement product over the internet on a subscription or purchase basis. Unlike the Posit products that focus separately on auditory and visual acuity, Cognifit’s products claim to work on fourteen mental abilities simultaneously. Their Cognifit Personal Coach is an online product that incorporates an online mental assessment at the outset of the program and costs $19.95/month or $179.00/year. Mindfit is the boxed CD-based equivalent product that apparently offers about the the same function as Cognifit Personal Coach, but costs $149.00 for 24 CD-based training cycles. Finally, Cognifit, like Posit, offers a senior driving product called Cognifit Senior Driving that hones 10 driving-related cognitive skills and sell for $19.95/month online or $179.00/year.

A Swedish-based company called Cogmed has a software-based product that develops what they call “working memory” with varieties of the product targeting juveniles, adults and seniors. The argument for developing one’s “working memory capacity” (Learn about it here) seems well researched, and has relevance both to ADHD and to age-related memory loss associated. Cogmed’s products are probably the most scientifically tested and proven, although all the products mentioned here have some level of scientific or clinical substantiation to back them. Cogmed, unfortunately, goes to market not as a CD or an online exercise, but rather as a clinical service delivered by a small cadre of licensed professionals at what appears to be (see example) a rather high price.

Lumos Labs has an entirely web-based product at www.Lumosity.com that assesses users’ mental acuity in nine separate areas like Short-term memory, Spatial Reasoning, Working Memory, etc. and then drills and hones those skills via several dozen exercises, some of which are pretty artful and entertaining. Of all the products I’ve described, only Lumosity permits free trial, which I readily took advantage of. Once the free trial period is over, Lumosity costs $9.95/month or less, depending upon the enrollment duration you select.

Most of these products, and more, can be purchased or experienced at Vibrant Brain’s two locations in San Francisco or Foster City, CA. Thanks to Lisa Schoonerman for her time in introducing me to this fascinating array of cognitive excercise products for the aging, and the not-so-aging.

Advanced Brain Technologies featured in The State of the Brain Fitness Software Market 2009 Report p

Advanced Brain Technologies featured in The State of the Brain Fitness Software Market 2009 Report published today.

This annual report profiles the top 20 companies in the brain fitness software market. Despite being one of the first movers in the brain fitness market with the introduction of the original BrainBuilder® software program in 1999 Advanced Brain Technologies is grouped in the “Wait and See” category in terms of market position. This is due to our focus not being exclusively brain fitness software.

As a market leader in music-based intervention we are diversified beyond software unlike the other leading companies in the report which offer strictly software based solutions for assessment and improvement of cognitive functions.

With new research and developments in market sectors including; consumer, healthcare, K-12, corporate, and military, our market position will be shifting significantly in the next 12 to 24 months.

Report Highlights

1) Growth market: Consumers, seniors’ communities and insurance providers drove year on year sustained growth, from $225m in 2007 to $265m in 2008. Revenues may reach between $1 billion to $5 billion by 2015, depending on how important problems (Public Awareness, Navigating Claims, Research, Health Culture, Lack of Assessment) are addressed.

2) Increased interest and confusion: 61% of respondents Strongly Agree with the statement “Addressing cognitive and brain health should be a healthcare priority.” But, 65% Agree/Strongly Agree “I don’t really know what to expect from products making brain claims.”

3) Investment in R&D seeds future growth: Landmark investments by insurance providers and government-funded research institutes testing new brain fitness applications planted new seeds for future growth.

4) Becoming standard in residential facilities: Over 700 residential facilities – mostly Independent and Assisted Living facilities and CCRCs – have installed computerized cognitive training programs.

5) Customer satisfaction: Consumers seem more satisfied with computer-based products than paper-based options. But, satisfaction differs by product. When asked “I got real value for my money”, results were as follows: Lumosity.com (65% Agree), Puzzle Books (60%), Posit Science (52%), Nintendo (51%) agreed. Posit Science (53% Agree) and Lumosity.com (51%) do better than Puzzle Books (39%) and Nintendo (38%) at “I have seen the results I wanted.”

6) Assessments: Increasing adoption of computer-based cognitive assessments to baseline and track cognitive functions over time in military, sports, and clinical contexts. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America now advocates for widespread cognitive screenings after 65-75.

7) Specific computerized cognitive training and videogames have been shown to improve brain functions, but the key questions are, “Which ones”, and “Who needs what when?”

8) Aggressive marketing claims are creating confusion and skepticism, resulting in a distracting controversy between two misleading extremes: (a) “buying product XYZ can rejuvenate your brain Y years” or (b) “those products don’t work; just do one more crossword puzzle.” The upcoming book The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness aims to help consumers navigate these claims.

9) Developers can be classified into four groups, based on our Market and Research Momentum analysis: we find 4 Leaders, 8 High Potentials, 3 Crosswords 2.0, and 6 Wait & See companies.

10) Increased differentiation: Leading companies are better defining their value proposition and distribution channels to reach specific segments such as retirement communities, schools, or healthcare providers.

The folks over at Lumosity are serious about the brain. Some of the leading neuroscientists in the w

The folks over at Lumosity are serious about the brain. Some of the leading neuroscientists in the world have come together to create a brain fitness program to improve your brain’s health and performance. Although the full Lumosity brain training program involves many other online games and costs $6.60 to $9.95 per month, their new Speed Brain iPhone app costs only $0.99 and will help keep your brain in tip-top shape!

The concept is simple: you’re shown a series of pictures and asked if each one matches the one before it. If you get it right, your score goes up. If you get it wrong, your iPhone or iPod touch vibrates to let you know. If you can answer fast enough you can earn bonus points for speed. And when you’re done, you will have hopefully flexed your brain enough to improve your processing speed and reaction time. My first time through I scored a pathetic 840, but after getting a handle of the concept I was able to chalk up a 5,190 on my second try.

The game is designed as a quick daily brain exercise — so don’t expect to spend more than 2 minutes a day with it. It’s definitely a one-trick pony, but if you believe these types of exercises help your brain to stay in shape (and most doctors do) then it’s the perfect game for standing in line at the grocery store or at the coffee shop.

Jau daugiau nei metai laisvesnėmis minutėmis stengiuosi patreniruoti savo smegeninę Lumosity. Vargšę galvelę tikrai patampiau per tiek laiko. Bet rezultatai akivaizdūs:

BPI istorija

Lumosity, at lumosity.com, is a series of games designed to make your brain more acute. The games are designed by scientists based on the principles of neuroplasticity. These exercises are supposed to improve memory and brain function.

Lumosity is a membership site that costs $80 a year or $10 a month for access to the games. They have a free trial membership now so you can try out the games and see if they help you. Recently, the company raised $3 million in capital to implement and promote their business.

It’s interesting that a game on a computer might actually help your brain function. In my opinion, just about any computer game can exercise your brain. It takes some mental functioning to play World of Warcraft or Everquest. It takes hand-eye coordination to play FPS or driving games. It takes some mental planning to play real time strategy war games. From what I saw of the Lumosity games, they are matching tasks, and games where you identify birds. I only saw four games described, but I guess it’s a start.

Ouf, ça me rassure…

Margaret Lukens, New Leaf + Company LLC

There was a time when scientists believed that the adult brain had nowhere to go but down. Like a flower that develops, blooms and fades, our brains were thought to reach a peak of processing power early in life, then begin the long, irreversible march toward decrepitude.

Now research has shown that the adult brain is characterized by neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections, which continues throughout life. Several companies have entered the market with the promise that we can have a more buff brain to match the gym-toned body.

One such company is Lumosity. With a series of games played on the computer, Lumosity claims to help boost your BPI, “brain performance index,” a ranking based on over 7,000,000 uses of the Lumosity games. The Lumosity games aim to take advantage of neuroplasticity by encouraging the brain to form the neural connections that improve functions such as memory, processing speed and cognitive control.

Often feeling that my brains have drained away through my ears as I slept, and having mastered half a dozen games on Solitaire Until Dawn plus some advanced-level sudoku in an attempt to build my brain power, I signed up for Lumosity’s free 14-day trial.

While my mousing hand doesn’t appreciate the extra work, I find the games enjoyable and relaxing. I take a 10-minute break during my workday to compete against my personal best on computer games and feel virtuous about it.

The brain functions targeted by the games play a critical role in helping people be more productive, too, by helping us to attend quickly to what is necessary, to exert control over the things that command our attention, and to handle more things more quickly without feeling overwhelmed. So I’m not frittering away time on computer games; I’m improving my brain’s executive function. At least, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

What methods have you tried to improve your brain’s abilities? Crossword puzzles? Jigsaw puzzles? Other brain fitness products? Share your experiences here.

Like other SAGE members I know what a good diet is and often bring cookies with bran in them, but it is beginning to take some courage for me to join in discussions when a word, a name, or a number I want to use but has disappeared.

When I lament this to others some will say it’s normal aging and tell me to read Gary Small’s book, The Memory Bible.
I did. It made me feel dumb.

But now I bravely do colorful, interesting memory games on www.lumosity.com and happily follow it with www.freerice.com

“Lumosity”, yes that’s how it’s spelled, is created by Stanford scientists and it can drive me crazy, but my scores are getting higher with speed, cognition and recognition so I will persist.

Free rice is wonderful, letting a player go back and try again in geography, great paintings, 4 languages, arithmetic, algebra and world capitols.

Opening up my Guardian today, I was pleased to read their report on the Which? Magazine survey focusing on “Brain Training” games. You know the sort; the user is given a simple repetitive task to do, such as adding up numbers, and over time it will ‘improve’ your brain. Except that it won’t really. Well, not much more then any other activity, such as doing a crossword. That won’t set you back £30 for one of their games as well.

The Which? report found, with the help of several neuroscientists, that there was no peer-reviewed evidence to back up any of the manufacturer’s claims that they will improve performance or stave off dementia and other mental illnesses. The same level of improvement could have easily been attained through playing other computer games such as Tetris.

Fair play to the Guardian for being the only major British newspaper to report this, especially as they have a page on their jobs website sponsored by Lumosity in which one can, erm, ‘Train their Brain’ in order to “Improve basic cognitive abilities including memory and processing speed.”

'Train your brain' on the Guardian's own website

Lumosity have been mentioned a lot in connection with this report, as it is their very own Michael Scanlon who offered a rebuttal to their findings. “We would never say Lumosity is proven to improve day-to-day living, but there is more and more evidence it does. We have actually conducted our own clinical trials to measure effectiveness of the product”, he said using his own mouth.

It’s interesting that he said “We would never say Lumosity is proven to improve day-to-day living”, considering that in the picture above it explicitly claims that their games can improve memory (note the meaningless graph on the right-hand side) and ‘processing speed’, whatever the hell that is. Their own website is full of PR guff on how their games ‘take care of your brain’ (and presumably dry your tears when you’re feeling down as well).

The news article also lists him as a ‘neuroscientist’, which is repeated ad nauseum in other reports on this story. Again this is interesting as this factoid isn’t listed on Lumosity’s own website, and the only references to his neuroscience qualifications was this page, which lists him as an alumnus of Stanford University. So it appears he has the credentials, but I find it a bit weird calling someone a neuroscientist when they haven’t recently performed or published any research. Especially research into their own wondergames.

That’s not entirely true. Dig deeper and you will find this small internal study which appears to back up the companies’ claims that their games will makes you smarter. Except that it’s flawed to hell and back (which is presumably why it’s unpublished in any decent scientific journal). They took around 20 people and split them into two groups; one that performed simple visual and memory tests without playing their games (the so-called ‘control group’) and another which did whilst playing Lumosity games in between. So what went wrong?

1) Few participants. They only looked at 23 people, with 14 placed in the trained group and nine placed in the control group (and one of them dropped out). This is a tiny number to make up a scientific study with. There will naturally be so much random noise that it would be hard to pinpoint down any changes between groups. It’s not exactly hard to hire people to play games for a study, so there’s really no excuse.

2) Lack of a decent control. The only ‘control’ group did not play anything between taking tests. So how can the investigators be sure that it is the games themselves causing any benefit, or just the fact that a group of people were performing a simple task to increase awareness? A third group in which volunteers did crosswords or played Tetris in between tests would have sorted this out. Of course, this might show that Lumosity games are not very good, which would make for a horrendous marketing campaign, wouldn’t it?

3) Cooked results. One of their claims is that ‘memory span’ was increased after playing their games. Was it though? Their graph was presented as follows:

The study made a big deal that in the trained group there is a ’statistically significant’ increase in memory capacity after playing these games. That is, the increase was very unlikely to happen by random. What about the control group though? The scores attained there are, in essence, exactly the same as the trained group. So these games don’t make a bit of difference to memory performance, in this regard. In fact I wouldn’t be suprised that just getting used to the tests lead to a naturally increased score, just by becoming accustomed to it.

Sigh. I’m getting tired now or marketing guff and the pointless word ‘Lumosity’. If you really want to mildly stretch your brain, why not do a crossword? The Guardian have a massive archive for you to try. (I have to linked to them as I do feel mildly guilty with the earlier comments; being a long-haired liberal, it is still my newspaper of choice.)

Finally, for more brain myths debunked, why not watch online the University of Edinburgh’s Christmas lecture, given by the excellent Sergio Della Sala? OK so it may take ages to load and still relies on Quick Time as opposed to Flash, but it’s a great way to learn more about why these marketing ideas are actually more likely to turn your brain to goo.
