Never read a graphic novel before? Haven’t read a comic book in years?

Here’s some brand new stuff that came out the week of November 11 that I think is worth a look-see for someone with little to no history with comics. That means you should be able to pick any of these up cold without having read anything else. So take a look and see if something doesn’t grab your fancy. If so, follow the publisher links or Amazon.com links to buy yourself a copy. Or, head to your local friendly comic book shop.

Disclaimer: For the most part, I have not read these yet, so I can’t vouch for their quality. But, from what I’ve heard and seen, odds are good they just might appeal to you.

Pope Hats #1 – $4.00
By Ethan Rilly
32 pages; published by AdHouse Books

Pope Hats follows the trials of a young woman named Frances Scarland, whose social circle mainly consists of an alcoholic actress and an inept ghost named Saarsgard. The comic is an engaging slice-of-life story about young people navigating their own daily shortcomings.

Pope Hats was the winner of a 2008 Xeric Foundation Grant. An earlier mini-comic version of the story was shortlisted for the 2008 Doug Wright Awards in the category of Best Emerging Talent.

Here’s a preview, sadly only 1 page. Looks pretty enjoyable, though. I wish I had an inept ghost in my life.

Blood Song: A Silent Ballad – $19.95
By Eric Drooker
312 pages; published by Dark Horse Comics; available at Amazon.com

American Book Award winner Eric Drooker brings his second graphic novel — the visually bold and politically charged Blood Song: A Silent Ballad — to Dark Horse in a brand-new second edition!

Consisting mainly of full-page images, spreads, and diptychs, Blood Song is a wordless, full-color tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and the need for that spirit to make itself heard. A young girl travels from her war-torn island to a busy metropolis, from lush jungles to cold concrete and steel, and finds something that eludes most denizens of bustling, noisy, wasteful cities: love.

* This second edition of Blood Song includes a new cover and completely rescanned and remastered interiors.

* If you are unfamiliar with the work of Eric Drooker, go to drooker.com.

We featured the first edition of this book in our documentary Dig Comics, so we’re very excited to see it back in print. This is beautiful work. Here’s a 3-page preview.

Luna Park – $24.99
By Kevin Baker & Danijel Zezelj
160 pages; published by DC Comics’ Vertigo Books; available at Amazon.com

‘The most satisfying story I’ve read – in any medium – in years. Perhaps the greatest work of one of America’s greatest writers.’ – Darin Strauss (Chang and Eng)

‘Frightening, beautiful and compelling to the very last panel.’ – Denise Mina (HELLBLAZER, Slip of the Knife)

New York Times bestselling author Kevin Baker (Dreamland) writes his first original graphic novel, with internationally acclaimed artist Danijel Zezelj.

Alik Strelnikov lives in the shadow of Coney Island, a world of silenced rides and rusting amusement parks that mock his dreams of becoming a hero. Ten years ago, he traded a brutal existence in the Russian army for the promise of America only to become an enforcer in the Brooklyn mob. Now, he chases his ghosts with all he has left: booze, heroin and his lover, Marina, part-time prostitute and full-time fortune teller.

The only way the two of them can escape their miserable fates hinges on a desperate plan that will put them between warring mobs and span a century, from contemporary Coney Island to the Russia of the Second Chechen War to spellbinding 1910s New York.

Mixing historical novel, immigrant fiction and crime thriller, LUNA PARK marks Kevin Baker’s return to Coney Island, the setting of his critically beloved Dreamland and features breathtaking art by Danijel Zezelj (LOVELESS) with to-die-for colors by Dave Stewart (DC: THE NEW FRONTIER).

This has been getting a lot of press, mostly because of Kevin Baker’s prominence in the book world. Crossing over from writing novels to writing graphic novels isn’t always smooth. It’s a different language requiring a different skill set. But the reviews have been pretty favorable. This looks like a good one. Here’s a great big 12-page preview (although the reader is a bit cumbersome).

By L. Frank Baum & Alex Robinson
72 pages; published by It Books; available at Amazon.com

Santa Claus lives in the Laughing Valley. On one side of the Valley is the mighty Forest of Burzee, home of the fairies. At the other side stands a terrible mountain that contains the caves of the daemons: Selfishness, Envy, Hatred, and Repentance. The daemons, thinking they have great cause to dislike old Santa, enact a treacherous plan on Christmas Eve. Then, with Santa curiously absent, only Santa’s magical friends can save Christmas!

This comic adaptation retells the classic Christmas tale of adventure and danger by L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz.

Something for the whole family during the holiday season. The story was originally published in 1904 and appears here in comic form courtesy of the talented cartoonist Alex Robinson. Here’s a healthy preview.

By Steve Niles & Bernie Wrightson
32 pages; published by IDW Publishing

When Los Angeles Detective Lieutenant Lloyd Klimpt finds himself in the middle of a Hollywood mystery that falls way outside the norm, he knows he’s going to need a different kind of help than he’s used to. He finds it in the bizarre form of The Ghoul, a monstrous investigator with a reputation for solving the world’s weirdest crimes.

Written and created by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), with art by industry legend Bernie Wrightson. Also included is an illustrated prose story by Niles.

Bernie Wrightson is so good. A little post-Halloween detective tale for you. Check out this preview.

By Marian Churchland
152 pages; published by Image Comics; available at Amazon.com

The first full-length solo work of MARIAN CHURCHLAND, artist of ELEPHANTMEN # 18-20, and Conan: Trophy.

Colette, a young sculptor looking for work, finds a job with a mysterious client who wants her to carve his portrait out of marble. The client turns out to be a shadowy creature, and the block of marble, she discovers, has a long history that threatens to engulf her entirely.

There’s a nice elegance to this art, but don’t mistake that for being timid, as the heavy blacks for the shadowy creature show. I’m intrigued. There’s a preview at the publisher link above.

The Year of Loving Dangerously – $18.95
By Ted Rall & Pablo G. Callejo
128 pages; published by NBM Publishing; available at Amazon.com

It’s the 80’s and Ted is in college in New York City and slipping. His pranks, lack of focus, and restlessness get him kicked out of school.

Unable to find a job, rejected by his parents, he’s on the verge of suicide. Instead he finds comfort in the arms of many women he meets casually and puts up a front for. It may sound like an ideal grift but the toll is much higher than one may imagine.

Between acidly funny and disturbingly real, Rall pours out his guts on a hard turning point in his life.

Political cartoonist Ted Rall turns to autobiography, and makes the interesting choice of having someone else handle the art. If you don’t know Ted Rall from Tony Randall, I wouldn’t worry about it. The description above tells you all you need to know. Here’s a preview.

By Parsua Bashi
128 pages; published by St. Martin’s Press; available at Amazon.com

In the tradition of graphic memoirs such as Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, comes the story of a young Iranian woman’s struggles with growing up under Shiite Law, her journey into adulthood, and the daughter whom she had to leave behind when she left Iran. NYLON ROAD is a window into the soul of a culture that we are still struggling to understand. Beautifully told, poignant, this is a powerful work about the necessity of freedom.

Persepolis is pretty lofty company but it’s a worthy topic to address. The entire first chapter can be seen here as a PDF.

This past Saturday I headed over to the opening of Brooklynite Gallery’s Go Get Your Shinebox group show. The show was fantastic and it was great to see and meet so many people that I have immense respect for including: Meggs (HERE), Aiko (HERE) , Luna Park (HERE), Shai Dahan (from Abztract ) and other amazing friends that passed by for the show. The night was electric with energy and the participating artists in the show brought some quality work out for the crowd to see and even interact with. My specific shinebox dealt with a Mask Shop and playing with themes of dual identities, mystery, and our dreams of becoming something more than who or what we are today. I also had the opportunity to work on another one of my “Black Holes” along the back walls of the gallery along with artists such as Dain, Specter, Dada, Peru Ana, Billi Kid, Kozbe and Chris Mendoza. Overall I had a blast and it is a great show to end November right before heading out to Miami for Art Basel next week. Catch images of the entire opening below and stay posted for more photos later this week.

Three things that are very much on my mind at the present moment. As in the very, very present moment.

Good News: Yearlies are over and I can finally get back into NaNoWriMo.

Bad News: I am 30, 000 words behind on my NaNoWriMo and my word count bar graphs looks incredibly sad.

I think in this kind of situation, I’m going to try to cram in as many words as I can before it finishes. Even if I don’t make the 50K mark. And maybe like shut myself indoors on the weekend and just write, write and write even more all day.

Which brings me to my next subject.

My efforts to learn how to code in Python have been slow and mostly non-existent. Today, I decided to try and get back into it only to get about twelve syntax errors and other coding in general errors. Before I got how to open one image.

Of course there’s a lot of process that goes into opening an image such as which directory to open from, the file name etc. The problem was, I had to do this every time even if it was in the same folder. So today, I’ve been trying to do a shortcut for that. But I have realised one very important thing when programming:

You can not be lazy. You can not use shortcuts for words. And hope they work out. (Like you know when you save files and it would be generally recommended that you title it something relevant to your file? I just type “asdas” or similar because it’s the quickest thing on my keyboard and I hope I remember what it means)

Turns out, you can not do this when you code. The program shall get confused and you shall get a lot of writing in red (error colour eek DD:)

And lastly, I went to Luna Park in Sydney for a maths excursion today.

~ Rides comprising of ~

1 roller coaster ride – my first one

1 Pirate ship swingo ride – first time on one of these (extremely freaking hanging upside down and looking at Sydney 20 metres or more in the air)

1 random spinning ride where I was stuck to the wall, feet in the air because the thing was spinning so fast (completely dizzy-making :/ )

1 horrible, horrible photo of me screaming on the roller coaster (my friend bought it blah. I will burn it later.)

I still feel kind of nauseous thinking about the spinning rides.

Ugh I hate circles.

They’re not my idea of fun.

Update: Woah long post.

When Tony and I returned to Melbourne from Port Campbell, we stayed in South Yarra, a suburb of Melbourne. We had read before leaving home about St. Kilda Beach. It was supposed to be a neat area to go shop and eat and have a drink. We took a tram to St. Kilda and although it was an overcast and windy day, we did find quite a few people in the shopping area. The beach was deserted and Luna Park (amusement park) was closed for the season but the restaurants and shops were doing a brisk business.

We had a delicious Porterhouse steak dinner with beer as the house special that night and paid only $15 each which is a bargain in Australia where most dinners out will set you back at least $30 each. It was interesting to watch the restaurant. In the U.S., the fire marshall would have been there to close them down or make them get rid of some of their customers. It was so crowded that we actually had to wait for the restaurant staff to ask people to get up out of their chairs so we would have a path to the door. And it happened anytime they were seating someone or someone wanted to leave. The food was amazingly delicious and the beer was brewed locally so other than having to wait to get out of there, we had no complaints.

Apologies for my absence, I’ve been spinning in circles, screaming with my arms in the air and

Apologies for my absence, I’ve been spinning in circles, screaming with my arms in the air and feel that I am still recovering. I had vague memories of the big somewhat scary smiling clown looking mouth that is supposed to be iconic for “fun”, but had no memory of the internals of the clown, the activities beyond the gate. We walked in to a land of “children”, it was amazing, I almost think that experience for the adult who has forgotten how to be a child is better than for the child, although our partners in crime for the day, two 7 year olds for the day would probably disagree. I think part of the fun for adults is the link to the history, the carousel, glorious in all its splendour is a restore original, or maybe it’s just research addict like me that get off on the history of the rides, who knows.

We spent the day whizzing around on the “Little Mouse” or something like that- a kiddy rollercoaster, which made me convinced that my ’slightly too heavy for recommended healthy weight body’ may be just enough to tip my cart over the edge of the rail to a plummeting death. We relaxed on the Ferris Wheel, where again I contemplated whether the best survival chances would be an outcome of crashing down to the water or the concrete below, and then we span ridiculous numbers of circles on “The Spider”, I don’t think I invisaged a catapulting death on this one. We also got banged up on the dodgem cars and spent hours on the giant slides. The slides is where I was truly returned to childhood, we raced down on our sacs many miles an hour then pushing out through excited loss of breath, “Do you want to go again?” we clambered up the many stairs dragging our sacs behind us to race again. I felt the urge of a full bladder creeping up on me and actually, in true child nature…… wet my pants.

No, not really, but I did put of going and felt the feeling of.. “just one more slide then I’ll go.” My legs were shaky with adrenalin, or just worn out from going up stairs? and I was hot and flushed. On the toilet, if you care for details, I sat anxiously anticipating quickly wiping and washing hands (hey I deserve a star for remembering to wash) so as to rush back to play. I have now re-visited that fear of, I guess missing out. You know that nothings closing, the slides aren’t magically going to pack up and leave while you’re in the bathroom, yet you rush.

As I played I thought, firstly of any possible way I could have a fundraiser at Luna Park, a thought my husband responded to with “can’t you just have fun?”, and a second thought of… I think everyone should do this. People that are sick, people who are not, everyone, I guess sit comes back to laughter being the best medicine. My cheeks were sore from laughing, especially on the scary rides. It really invokes a piece of you that I bet, as adults you have forgotten. Garth and I are hoping to stick to a plan where we go for Friday night fun, even just twice a year where we can have dinner (not too much) and challenge each other to the dodgem cars and share a cart on the roller coaster. I’ll also have a chance to work on him to come on The Spider with me.

So fun, I encourage you all, with or without children, illness, mortgages or other to get out and do an activity that you haven’t done as an adult. We don’t have to go to movies, have dinner and do the adult things, go do something free (unfortunately not financially free) and fun, and remember that we are alive! Like Kriss Carr says on one of her BLOGS,

why do we wait for permission to live?

Next I’ve decided we should sell up and just travel in a bus together playing :”left and right” whichever way the children say to turn we will and just see where we end up??

Garth reckons in fie minutes we will have turned a circle and be back where we started? I guess we’ll see, one day, have to keep working on him for that one.

Shan xoxo

“¡Buenas noches, cabrones! (…)

no acuses a mi corazón
tan maltrecho y ajado
que está cerrado por derribo.

Foto "Stairs and Lines" by annakarenina - flickr

Just back from my local comic book shop. More superhero books than I normally buy for some reason:

Chew #5 – John Layman and Rob Guillory (Image): The final issue of this fun little read about an FDA agent who gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats (including severed fingers and deceased pets). Doesn’t take itself seriously, which I like in a comic.

Ignition City #5 – Warren Ellis, Gianluca Pagliarnai (Avatar): About time this one comes out. I love this series, but Avatar’s publishing schedule is giving me a headache. I guess these smaller press outfits (Boom! and IDW included) operate like the golden age of comics publishing – you get it when you get it. My series review is posted here.

Fantastic Four #572 – Jonathan Hickman, Dale Eaglesham (Marvel): The first arc by the new creative team. It’s really a Reed Richards solo story. The jury is out for me until the story is complete. I gave the Millar/Hitch a try, but abandoned that one two issues in because it wasn’t really doing much for me. I like my FF cosmic adventures and domestic strife.

Guardians of the Galaxy #19 – Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Wesley Craig (Marvel): Kang the Conqueror’s still around? I grabbed this one totally on a whim. I loved what Keith Giffen did with the team in Annihilation Conquest. There’s no Rocket Raccoon (presumable he’s dead?) but I was sold on Cosmo the dog. I’ll be curious to see if it’s still as much fun as Giffen’s run.

Die Hard Year One #2 – Howard Chaykin and Stephen Thompson (Boom! Studios): I don’t usually go for licensed books, but this one intrigued me based on the write-up on the Living Between Wednesdays blog. Definitely a slow build with the introduction of far too many characters. I’ll be interested to see how issue #2 unfolds. But I definitely prefer Brubaker and Phillips’ Criminal for a good crime/heist story.

Astro City Special: Astra #2 – Kurt Busiek, Brent E. Anderson (Wildstorm): The latest entry in the Astro City family. The book goes monthly starting with the next issue that comes out. I’m debating whether to keep picking this one up. It’s not at the top of my list, but it’s definitely not at the bottom (unlike the latest New Mutants series, sorry).

Madame Xanadu #16, cover

And finally Madame Xanadu #16 – Matt Wagner and Amy Reeder Hadley (Vertigo): New arc. The original creative team is back. Sexy magic – the best kind? Includes a preview of Luna Park, which look wicked.

Unfortunately, Northlanders #21 was sold out. I really enjoy Brian Wood’s DMZ, but haven’t tried this series yet. Based on some pencilled pages posted on the Vertigo blog recently, I thought I’d pick up this new arc.

Because I’ve been doing sooooo well with the two blogs I have, I decided to start another one!

Because I’ve been doing sooooo well with the two blogs I have, I decided to start another one! No…it wasn’t really my decision…although my comment was the impetuous for it. Here’s what happened: a few weeks ago I was cruising around the ‘net looking for art related opportunities for my lovely, talented husband and I happened upon a notice of RFPs being accepted for an upcoming show at the Kirkland Art Center called Steambot. It said they were seeking individuals and collaborative groups to create interactive artwork for an exhibition in the KAC Gallery during October and November of 2010 and that it would feature work that combines both current and 1900’s-era technology. Woohoo, thought I, sounds steamy to me! So I wrote to Cable Griffith, the Exhibition Director and all-round charming guy, and long story short he came and talked with our local Steampunk Social Club and 6 of us decided to form a team and applied. The application was due on the same day the inaugural Seattle Steamcon started, just last Friday, so much gnashing of gears was heard but we managed to get everything ready and in.

Our idea is to create a Steampunk version of the Penny Arcade at Seattle’s Luna Park, the largest amusement park on the west coast at the turn of the century. And, acceptance be damned, we are already at work on designing our amazing machines and exhibits. So…when I found a blog post about a blog post about a Steampunked arcade machine (albeit one more 1980s than 1880s) I got all excited and sent it off to the rest of the team and Gary decided we needed our own…blog that is. And here it is – Seattle Steam Group.

Meglio fare programmi a lungo termine : )

Probabilmente cercano espiazione, in qualche modo

Come ben evidente.

O li vende. O li quota in borsa.

Ah, Lunedì era il Columbus Day.

State attenti a non farvi male, quindi.

Torno a Pisa il prossimo sabato e ci sarà Una Festa Della Madonna™ . Senza bondage, però. In linea di massima, almeno.

Quindi, fate tutti attenzione:

Sabato 17 Ottobre 2009, ore 21.30 fino all’alba successiva.
