Amazon's Global Kindle Reader

I heard that Amazon now has a global version of Kindle. I was disappointed to find this morning that the new version still will not work in my country.

Since I’ve wanted one for some time, but have been waiting until they got a version that would work in my country, I checked out their website this morning, only to be disappointed again. Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries.

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new Global Kindle for a Christmas gift this year, since the new version will only work in SOME countries, I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in.

I paesaggi autunnali qui sono davvero belli e l’architettura Rinascimentale dei Castelli ricorda i tragici film Holliwoodiani ambientati nella Vecchia Europa ai tempi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Vianden merita decisamente una visita non solo per il Castello ed il suggestivo paesaggio, ma anche per gli ottimi ristoranti e per l’Ancien Cinema; un caffè culturale realizzato all’interno di un antico cinema ed arredato in modo da ricordare gli eleganti salotti dove chissà, forse in passato, usavano incontrarsi i generali Tedeschi in compagnia di belle e raffinate donne d’alta classe.
A Clervaux, un altro Castello ospita invece la mostra fotografica permanente di Edward Steichen: “The Family of Man”, consacrata come capolavoro del fotografo lussemburghese, esposta nel 1955 presso il Museum of Modern Art di New York. Una mostra che ripercorre la vita dell’uomo, dalla nascita alla morte, passando attraverso tutte le cose più belle, commoventi e tristi che solo una vita vissuta intensamente può regalarci.

Girando per i corridoi del castello di Clervaux, un’ardente sete di vita mi ha riportato alla mente le scene de “Il Sorpasso”.

Comme je me suis couchée tard hier soir, je ne me réveille qu’à 9h. Comme hier, je vais réveiller Papa dans sa chambre par des bisous et des câlins.

Je vais ensuite réveiller Maman, et nous descendons déjeuner. On se prépare pour la piscine.

Nous récupérons mon copain Siméon (4 ans 1/2) et sa maman sur la route, et nous rendons tous les 4 aux “Thermes de Strassen”.

Nous nous amusons comme des fous, entre le toboggan, la piscine à vagues, la pataugeoire, le jacuzzi, la piscine extérieure (chauffée !).

2h plus tard, nous partons au Mc Do… pour un repas équilibré (oui, oui, je vous promets !). Siméon et moi mangeons comme des grands. Nos parents sont sympas, et nous laissent ensuite nous amusons longuement dans les labyrinthes et sur les écrans tactiles.

Il est 15h30, quand nous déposons Siméon et sa maman chez eux, nous rentrons à la maison, pour une bonne sieste de 2h. Papa en fait de même.

A 18h, j’ai un grand sourire. Je demande à Papa de jouer avec moi au Uno. Je connais bien les règles, et la signification de chaque carte.

C’est l’heure d’un bon bain, coiffage des cheveux, coupage des ongles, et Maman étant de retour, nous dînerons tous ensemble d’une bonne soupe.

Il est presque 21h quand je m’endors. Dehors, les rafales de vents et la pluie sont au rdv. Rédacteur : Patrick-Robin, mon Papa.

Il est 8h30 quand je me réveille. Je vais dans la chambre de Papa lui faire des bisous et ouvrir ses volets. Pendant qu’il prend sa douche, je joue sagement dans ma chambre.

Nous descendons prendre notre petit déjeuner, et je vais dans ma salle d’activités faire un peu de “dessinage”.

Je monte ensuite avec Papa dans son bureau, et Maman nous rejoint. On fait les fous avec un ballon, et joue à s’attraper. C’est l’occasion de beaux éclats de rire.

C’est enfin l’heure de prendre notre repas de midi. Tout se passe très bien. Je confectionne avec Maman 2 bracelets pour les amies que nous allons visiter ce soir avec Papa.

A 14h, je pars faire une sieste de 2h. A mon réveil, après une bonne douche, nous nous rendons chez Bénédicte. Je retrouve mes copains (Antoine et Thomas) et les 5 filles de Miranda et Ruddy, dont Charlotte (7 ans) et Louise (5 ans), mes copines. Nous allons tous ensemble aux “Journées du livre de Walferdange”. Charlotte s’occupe de moi, me montre les stands, je participe à un concours de dessins, et tente même d’apprendre à marcher sur un câble, comme les acrobates de cirque. Nous rentrons tous à pieds chez Bénédicte… sans que je ne lâche la main de Charlotte.

Apéritif, excellent dîner, jeux avec tous mes amis… la soirée est vraiment très sympa.

Vers 22h30, je suis très triste de quitter Charlotte, mais nous nous reverrons bientôt, me promet Papa.

De retour à la maison, Maman me montre ce qu’elle a acheté pour moi cette après-midi (de bottes fourrées et un manteau !).

Maman s’occupe de moi ce matin. Nous arrivons à l’école assez de bonne heure pour prendre notre petit déjeuner avec Trinity, ma copine. Ses parents ont fait un mot à la Maitresse.

Maman nous dépose ensuite en classe, et je passe une bonne journée.

A l’issue de mon cours de luxembourgeois, Papa croise la maitresse Marie-Jeanne, qui lui confirme que j’ai des facilités dans l’apprentissage des langues (comme Maman). Je parle déjà le français et l’anglais couramment (pour mes 4 ans !), et à l’école j’ai des cours d’allemand et de luxembourgeois.

Il est 17h, et Papa est venu me chercher avec sa belle voiture. C’est la première fois que je fais un tour avec. Arrivé à la maison, je lui demande de me montrer tous les accessoires de cette voiture (la vidéo, le frigo, les sièges qui bougent, le coffre qui s’ouvre et se ferme tout seul…) et les fonctions de chaque bouton.

Je suis adorable ce soir. Je dîne sans aucun problème, goute même à de la cancoillotte accompagnée de quelques noix.

Comme il est assez, tôt (et que je suis sympa !), j’ai le temps de dessiner un peu tout en écoutant des comptines luxembourgeoises. Il est 19h30 quand je m’endors. Rédacteur : Patrick-Robin, mon Papa.

La semaine n’est pas exceptionnelle. Je me réveille un peu avant 7h, je m’habille en faisant la bouille mais finis par sourire après une petite explication avec Maman. Je réveille ensuite Papa. Nous descendons déjeuner, je bois mon lait puis mets le reste de mon petit déjeuner (2 cookies, mes vitamines, une barre de céréale et une pompote) dans un petit sac plastique. C’est un peu un rituel, avec Maman je peux manger dans la voiture alors j’en profite.

Nous arrivons à l’école vers 7h45, un gros bisou et je suis en classe.

13h30 Maman vient me chercher pour la crèche, je suis adorable et vais chez les Bluebells, le sourire aux lèvres.

18h30, elle vient me chercher, nous rentrons passons par le Proxi, achetons quelques courses puis rentrons à la maison.

Je suis plutôt gentille jusqu’au moment de prendre ma douche, où je décide, comme souvent, de faire un petit scandale. La douche est donc rapide, Maman me met en pyjama et je me retrouve au lit à 20h. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

This is it.  All will be decided later today or perhaps tomorrow if the deliberations in the European Council of Ministers about the position of President of the Council and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs continue late into the next day.  We are already hearing stories about participants taking one, two or even three shirts to see them through.  (They are almost all men – hence the shirt question).

Well, will our very own TB make it?  Tony’s chances do seem to have revived during the past two days, but whether he can overcome the “small country” challenge is still not certain.  Some of the tiniest EU states don’t want a large country holding the post as they fear this will smother them.  So we are now seeing an attempt at a classic EU fudge – find the lowest common denominator and go with that regardless of whether or not that is the best and most effective decision for Europe as a whole.

This mindset has led to Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy emerging as the front-runner.  I hardly think Belgium is a shining example of how to run a country.  A population of about 10 million is split into two linguistic groups with three federal regions, a system which is so unworkable that Belgium was recently without a federal government for nearly two years as the various parties were unable to agree on a coalition.

The other two small countries who are realistic contenders aren’t much better.  Peter Balkenende from Holland verges on the Thatcherite.  Luxembourg has, as ever, staked its claim.  Yet can anyone take Jean-Claude Junker seriously when the entire population of Luxembourg is only 488,000.  Yes 488,000 compared to over 60 million in the UK and Germany’s 82.5 million.  I am tempted to use that dreadful Americanism – “give us a break!”

There are two other factors working against our Tony.  Most importantly, the Socialists do not have a majority in the European Council.  The system of qualified majority voting used gives that to the EPP.  Moreover, the Socialist governments do not always all vote the same way.  Just to muddy the waters further, the Socialist and Democrat Group in the European Parliament has waged a strong campaign, which some Socialist governments have bought in to, that the Socialists should let the EPP have the President while the Socialists make a concerted bid for the High Representative.

The small country and/or EPP bid for the President position may well be the way it goes today.  I understand that there is everything to play for, and unusually in the EU the result has not been fixed in advance.  Since the Socialists are going for the High Representative, could this be what Tony ends up with?  I gather he may not be averse to the idea.  The job will, after all, be to act as the face of the EU across the whole globe and the post holder will also control the world-wide network of EU missions (embassies).

Crunch time indeed.

Je me réveille un peu après 6h30, je suis d’excellente humeur. Je choisis mes habits, fais beaucoup rire Maman et traine un peu.

Nous partons de la maison vers 7h20, je déjeunerai à l’école. Arrivées à l’école, Maman et moi proposons à Trinity, une copine de classe bilingue anglais/français comme moi, de venir manger avec nous. Malheureusement la maîtresse n’est pas d’accord car nous n’avons pas l’autorisation de ses parents. Je suis un peu triste mais un bon chocolat chaud et un croissant me rendront le sourire.

17h45, Maman vient me chercher, nous rentrons à la maison, Papa nous y attend. Je suis vraiment de très bonne humeur. Maman et moi faisons une petite activité "bracelets", cela m’amuse beaucoup, nous rangeons d’abord les perles par couleur, puis nous décidons de comment les assembler. Nous faisons ainsi quatre jolis bracelets, que mes grand-mères retrouveront sous le sapin.

Nous passons ensuite à table, tout se passe au mieux et nous mangeons en famille. Je joue ensuite un peu. Il est déjà 20h, je prends rapidement ma douche et me prépare. Maman me chante quelques chansons et je suis endormie un peu avant 20h30. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

Earlier today, The Economist declared Somalia the unfortunate winner of the British newsmagazine’s ultimate booby prize — The Worst Country on Earth. Previous winners Afghanistan and Turkmenistan would undoubtedly have been relieved to be rid of the title if they weren’t preoccupied with all their other problems.

At the same time, The Economist’s writers put out a challenge to readers to nominate the best country on Earth.

Naturally, I’d be inclined to nominate Canada — but I decided instead to open up a spreadsheet and do a quick calculation of where the 20 highest ranking nations in the latest United Nations Human Development Index stood in three other widely consulted indicators of good government: Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, the Switzerland-based Institute for Management Development’s World Competitiveness Scoreboard and Vision of Humanity’s Global Peace Index.

There are three things I should note here. First, I was forced to drop Iceland and Liechtenstein because of incomplete information. Second, in the Human Development Index rankings, I treated two countries with the same raw score as being tied, which is something the Wikipedia article does not do. Third, countries that did not finish in the Human Development Index Top 20 were excluded as not meeting a vital minimum standard for being considered as one of the world’s 10 best-run countries.

I calculated each country’s average ranking across the four indexes. Wherever there was a tie, I used each country’s worst score — its weakest link — as the tie-breaker. As the countries were ranked from best to worst, the closer a country’s average ranking came to ‘1′, the better.

Keep in mind that this is just for fun, and something I had no intention of working all night on — other people might have other methodologies and criticisms of this one.

Without any further ado, here is a countdown of the world’s ten best-run countries.

Quiz:  Which of the following is associated with Luxembourg?  Tax-free banking or Villeroy & Boch?  Both, actually.  But there are other items of interest in this tiny country bordered by Belgium, France and Germany–the world’s only Grand Duchy (meaning its ruler is a Grand Duke).  In fact, the tourism board lists six great reasons to visit, to wit:  panoramic views at Chemin de la Corniche, a walk through the old quarters, wine tasting in the Moselle Valley, military history, Michelin dining and biking in the Ardennes region.  Worried about getting around?  Take the hop on, hop off bus.  There’s also a miniature train from May to October.  In short, something for everyone.

Je me réveille assez tôt, Maman est sous sa douche. Je suis plutôt sympa et prends mon petit déjeuner sans problème.

Je fais un bisou à Papa, puis file dans la voiture et à l’école. 7h45, je suis dans ma classe.

Maman vient me chercher à 12h30 pile, puis nous allons à la crèche. Je lui fais un gros câlin. Elle reviendra un peu moins de 6h plus tard.

J’ai passé une bonne après midi. Nous rentrons à la maison, je fais un bisou à Papa, puis descends manger. C’est là que tout se gâte, je ne veux pas manger mes pâtes, pleure pour un rien. Maman expédie donc un peu le reste de la soirée, je prends ma douche à toute vitesse. Il est 19h30 lorsque je m’endors après quelques chansons et de gros câlins. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

La desindustrialisation de notre vieille Europe a laissé des traces dans le paysage urbain. Même si l’essentiel des grands complexes sidérurgiques furent démantelés, quelques vestiges témoignent encore de ce passé.

Véritable cathédrale de métal, les haut-fourneaux se dressent encore fièrement ça et là. Pénétrer à l’intérieur de ces labyrinthes de tuyaux et de couloirs sombres constitue une expérience étrange. Chaque pas porte un peu plus loin l’envie d’imaginer ce que la “vie” pouvait être à l’intérieur de cet enfer et pourquoi tout à coup, tout s’est arrêté.

A Clabecq, le site est en cours de démontage, la ville semble désormais endormie…

Programme du jour : Ecole et fatigue.

 

Maman m’extirpe péniblement de mon sommeil à 7h, je m’habille, fais un bisou à Papa puis saute dans la voiture. Nous déjeunons à l’école, puis à 8h Maman me pose devant ma classe pour ma leçon d’allemand.

17h45, elle vient me chercher, je suis toute sourire jusqu’à ce que ce soit l’heure de manger, où je décide de faire un petit caprice qui n’impressionne personne.

18h30, je mange de bon appétit mais toujours entre rire et larmes. Je monte ensuite jouer un peu avec Papa, puis je prends ma douche en pleurs parce que je suis très fatiguée. Maman se hâte, je suis prête à me coucher à 19h et m’endors quelques minutes après. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

Programme du jour : Cuisine, calme et Science Festival.

Grasse matinée, je me réveille un peu après 9h15, même rituel qu’hier, je me glisse dans la chambre de Maman puis dans celle de Papa. Je suis de bonne humeur, c’est une joie de m’entendre rire.

Je descends avec Maman pour préparer des cookies aux flocons d’avoine, je me régale de mélanger les ingrédients. Vers 11h Papa descends prendre son petit déjeuner avec nous.

Le reste de la matinée sera composée de jeux avec Maman, de câlins sur le canapé, de feuilletage d’albums photos avec Papa… Bref, nous ne faisons pas grand chose.

14h, nous décidons enfin de prendre notre douche, qui se transformera très vite en bain. Après avoir pris le soin d’inonder la salle de bain, Maman et moi nous préparons à sortir.

Nous passerons le reste de l’après midi au Science Festival à Luxembourg, je m’intéresse particulièrement au système solaire, à l’évolution de l’espèce animale et au progrès de la robotique.

A 18h, nous partons, en route pour la maison, je retrouve Papa. Je mange sans vraiment d’appétit. Maman a un concert ce soir, c’est donc Papa qui me couche après avoir écouté mon livre de comptines luxembourgeoises (si, si, ça existe). Il est 19h30 quand je m’endors. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

This trip kind of snuck up on me.  One day, a couple months ago, I decided to go visit my cousin Jennifer in Amsterdam for my birthday.  A few days later, after checking the timing with Jen, I bought a ticket and mostly forgot about it.  I’ve been having an insanely busy and stressful semester, so I never really had time to plan out what I wanted to do in Amsterdam.  I had wanted to go to Luxembourg and Antwerp, but a few days before I left I realized I was feeling really stressed about making that ambitious of a trip (6-8 hours by train each way, with a few transfers)  in the few short days that I’m here, as well as spending that much money (probably more than my plane ticket over here).  Instead, I came with the vague plan of hanging out with Jen and making a day trip to Antwerp.

On Tuesday morning I started packing and cleaning my house, and left around 2:30 with Rachel for the airport.  The flight was completely uneventful and actually seemed really short.  I think I slept a little- more than usual, but probably only an hour or two.  We landed just after 7am local time, which is 1am at home.  I made my way through passport control and to the big train desk to wait for Jen.  It was still dark as we made our way by train to Amsterdam Centraal and then took a bus to her dorm, which is in an area called Funen.  When the day finally decided to make an appearance, it was gray and drizzly, making it very hard to convince myself that it was daytime and that I should be awake.  Jet lag is not fun.  The rule when you make an overnight trip to Europe is that you have to stay awake the entire day, so that you can adjust to the time change.  If you nap, it will be very difficult to fall asleep at a reasonable time that night, and then you won’t wake up until 2pm, etc.  Knowing this from painful personal experience, I still decided to nap.  I was completely exhausted, it was gross outside, and Jen had to go to class from 12-4, so there was no way I’d be able to keep myself awake.  In the end, I only slept for 3 hours, waking up around 3pm and quickly telling myself that it was early afternoon, not morning, and not bedtime.  Luckily, our only plan for the rest of the day was to go to the grocery store for provisions and to explore, so I wasn’t too concerned about the nasty weather or the headache that had decided to torment me.

Foreign grocery stores are always fun, especially now that I recognize some European brands.  This time I found the yummy Prince cookies that we all enjoyed in Munich.  I passed on those, but excitedly bought some fun-size packs of hagelslag- possibly my favorite Dutch word, and one of my favorite fun food things that I remember from my time in Antwerp.  Hagelslag, for those of you who are wondering, are sprinkles.  Unlike sprinkles that we have at home, hagelslag actually have flavor.  There are milk chocolate and dark chocolate ones, fruit flavored, licorice flavored, and vanilla.  Rather than being reserved for children’s cakes and ice cream cones, hagelslag are un-ironically enjoyed by adults as an everyday topping for buttered bread.  Sounds strange, I know, but it’s fantastic.

Premier réveil vers 6h du matin, je retourne me coucher pour rouvrir les yeux à nouveau vers 9h. Je vais doucement réveiller Maman, puis Papa. Je paresse puis descends petit déjeuner. J’ai peu d’appétit, il est pourtant 10h passées. Je grignote un bout de pomme par ici, un peu de céréales par là et finis de petit déjeuner un peu après 11h30.

Ensuite je passe un peu de temps avec Maman, puis avec Papa, puis seule dans ma chambre. Le temps passe vite et il est déjà temps de faire une petite sieste.

Maman en profite pour m’accompagner, je ne dormirai qu’1h 1/2. A 14h30, nous prenons un bon bain qui dure presque une heure, je suis de très bonne humeur.

15h45, nous sortons manger un bout dans la galerie commerciale d’Auchan, j’ai bon appétit et me lie d’amitié avec une petite fille et nous passons un long moment à jouer ensemble.

19h, Maman et moi allons faire un petit coucou à Damien, j’en profite pour faire de très jolis dessins. Nous rentrons à la maison vers 20h30. Je fais un câlin à Papa puis vais me coucher. Je m’endors il est 21h. Ma nuit sera agitée, un vilain virus s’est installé dans mon estomac, je me réveillerai 2 fois dans la nuit pour vomir. Rédacteur : Aurélia, ma Maman.

Papa s’occupe de moi se matin. Tout se passe bien et je suis à l’école vers 7h30.

Maman vient me chercher… mais je pleure. J’attendais Papa, je n’avais pas compris. On fait un loooong détour dans les embouteillages pour faire le plein et rentrons à la maison.

J’admire la nouvelle voiture de Papa, pose des questions et demande ou est mon siège auto. “Il est commandé ma fille, il arrive !”.

Je prends mon repas devant la télé avec Maman, et je suis au lit un peu après 20h. Maman est de sortie, Papa fera le baby sitter. Rédacteur : Patrick-Robin, mon Papa.
