Last night the Milton LWV  held their Candidate’s Night at Fuller Village in Milton.    There was a good turnout for the event in spite of the pouring rain. 

The most interesting debate from an informational point of view in my mind was for the position of Park Commissioner.     Both candidates,  Mr. Affanato and Mr. McCarthy,  came across well, and both had significantly different backgrounds and personalities.

My opponent once again chose not to show.    Under LWV national rules, they do not allow “open chair” debates – so I was effectively shut off from the audience and the TV viewers.    This is unfortunate, since the town voters deserve to hear from both of us.    

If you feel that it is important for candidates to appear before the public, make your feelings known on election day and vote for Todd Greenwood for Milton Board of Assessors.    I will provide a change to the way things have been done for the last 45 years.     Thank you.

تؤكد التعاليم البهائية على أنه لا مفر من عملية إعادة تنظيم أحوال العالم وإدارته كوطن واحد لأبناء البشر أجمع وذلك بالطبع يتطلب تنفيذ جملة من الأجراءات القانونية والروحية والخلقية ، وقد حث بيان بيت العدل الأعظم الذي صدر في أكتوبر عام 1985م ( السلام العالمي وعد حق ) قادة وشعوب العالم التوجه نحو هذه الحقيقة السامية في الديانة البهائية فجاء في هذا البيان :

إن القبول بمبدأ وحدة العالم الأنساني هو أول مطلب أساسي يجب توفره في أعادة تنظيم العالم وإدارته كوطن واحد لأبناء البشر أجمع . والقبول بهذا المبدأ الروحي قبولا عالمي النطاق ضروري بالنسبة لأي محاولة ناجحة لإقامة صرح السلام العالمي . وبناء على ذلك يجب إعلانه في كل أنحاء العالم وجعله مادة تدرس في المدارس ، كما ينبغي المثابرة على تأكيده وإثباته في كل دولة تمهيدا لإحداث ماينطوي عليه من تحول عنصري في بنية المجتمع .

والأعتراف بمبدأ وحدة العالم الأنساني يستلزم من وجهة النظر البهائية أقل ما يمكن إعادة بناء العالم المتمدن بأسره ونزع سلاحه ، ليصبح عالما متحدا إتحادا عضويا في كل نواحي حياته الأساسية ، فيتوحد جهازه السياسي ، وتتوحد مطامحه الروحية ، وتتوحد فيه عوالم التجارة والمال وتتوحد فيه اللغة والخط ، على أن يبقي في ذات الوقت عالما لا حدود فيه لتنوع الخصائص الوطنية والقومية التي يمثلها أعضاء هذا الأتحاد .فالشعار الذي يرفعه هو: الوحدة والإتحاد في التنوع والتعدد .

يتفضل حضرة شوقي أفندي بقوله : إن وحدة البشر كما رسمها حضرة بهاء الله تعنى :

                               ( تأسيس حكومة عالمية )  

( تتحد فيها إتحادا وثيقا كافة الأمم والمذاهب والأجناس والطبقات ، وفيها تكون الحقوق الذاتية للحكومات المكونة لأعضائها مكفولة تماما ، والحرية الشخصية لممثلي هذه الحكومة العالمية وتوقيعاتهم تكون محترمة ونافذة )

والحكومة العالمية كما أوضح حضرة شوقي أفندي تشمل على :

1- هيئة تشريعية عالمية : يكون أعضاؤها وكلاء عن جميع الجنس البشري وأن يكون لها الأشراف التام على موارد كافة الأمم التي تتكون منها ، وأن تشرع من القوانين ما تتطلبه نواحي الإصلاح وسد مطالب الأجناس والشعوب وتصحيح العلاقات فيما بينها .

2- هيئة تنفيذية مؤيدة بقوة عالمية : وظيفتها تنفيذ القرارات وتطبيق القوانين التي تضعها الهيئة التشريعية والمحافظة على هيكل وحدة الحكومة العالمية

3- محكمة عدل دولية : تتولى الفصل والحكم النافذ البات في كل نزاع ينشأ بين العناصر المختلفة المكونة لهذا النظام العام. وتفصل في النزاعات الحاصلة بين الأمم بمقتضى قواعد الحق والإنصاف، وتكون مقرراتها ملزمة بحق الجميع حتى بالنسبة للأطراف الذين لا يتقدمون برفع شكواهم ومنازعاتهم إليها من تقاء أنفسهم .

4- مركز مواصلات عالمي : وتخصيص جهاز للتخاطب مع كل جزء من أجزاء الأرض بعيدا عن كل تأثير وقيد قومي ويعمل بسرعة وكفاية تامة ، وإعداد مقر عام يكون المركزالنابض لمدينة عالمية تتركز حوله كل عناصر التوحيد في الحياة ومنه تنبعث أنوار أثاره المنشطة .

5- تبني عملة عالمية واحدة : الحاجة إلى تبني عملة عالمية كعامل حيوي من عوامل تكامل الإقتصاد العالمي واضحة لا تحتاج إلى دليل. ويعتقد الأقتصاديون أنه من بين الفوائد العديدة فأن العملة الواحدة ستقلل المضاربات في الأسواق المالية الغير مجدية وتقلل من التأرجح والتقلبات  في الأسوق العالمية وترفع من مستوى الدخل وتثبت الأسعار

6- إختيار لغة عالمية واحدة :إن أسباب الخلافات بين شعوب العالم كثيرة ومن أحد أسبابها إختلافات اللغة حيث ظهرت مشكلات عديدة بين شعوب العالم على مدى الأعوام السابقة كان سببها إنعدام اللغة المشتركة ولذا فإن عظمة ظهور حضرة بهاء الله تتمثل في تحديده لعلامات بلوغ العالم الإنساني سن الرشد ، ومن بينها إختيار لغة واحدة ليتحدث بها العالم .( ياأهل المجالس في البلاد إختاروا لغة من اللغات ليتكلم بها من على الأرض وكذلك من الخطوط إن الله يبين لكم ما ينفعكم ويغنيكم عن دونكم إنه لهو الفضال العليم الخبير، وهذا سبب الإتحاد لو أنتم تعلمون، والعلة الكبرى للإتفاق والتمدن لو أنتم تشعرون )

Most of us have heard about the Big Ten poll by now, but what about a Big Ten debate? While there is no debate being sponsored by the Big Ten, The 4th Debate is proposing a Presidential Debate in Madison, Wisconsin. The 4th Debate believes the League of Women Voters has the experience and non partisan standing for a debate of this magnitude.

At 10:00 this morning on The Ideas Network Kathleen Dunn will be talking to national and local representatives of the League of Women Voters. This is a great chance to call in to state that you wish the LWV were still in charge of the Presidential debates.  Express your desire for a debate that includes all the candidates who are on enough ballots to win the electoral college. Tell the LWV that the time has come for another mighty political experiment.

A Presidential Debate for All of America

A PROPOSAL

Introduction:
If you are about to read this proposal, it’s a certainty that you are among the millions who believe our quadrennial presidential campaigns desperately need a shot of authenticity.

Once again, the nation is on the eve of three events called presidential debates. By fiat, these bi-partisan affairs are now choreographed by just two campaigns, eliminating spontaneity at every turn. Because millions of Americans rely on debates to make their critical final decision, these debates must be as 1) democratic, 2) inclusive and 3) probing as possible. We assert the first scheduled debates will fail on all three tests.

This proposal, called The Fourth Debate, offers one additional opportunity for this 2008 campaign – one that is non-partisan, controlled by no campaign, and focused on the voters’ need to know. Our country deserves no less.

Assumptions:
The League of Women Voters has an impeccable history of fighting for democratic initiatives. No other nationally-recognized entity is equipped to initiate and properly conduct non-partisan presidential debates. That “might political experiment continues today. Locally, the Know Your Candidate TV series, hosted by the League, was a must-watch for informed voters.

The Commission on Presidential Debates will not cede its total control of the debate process without a concrete challenge. For twenty years and with millions of words, all efforts to negotiate a more democratic process have proven fruitless. Only the League of Women Voters can make that challenge.

Because this year there are an unprecedented six candidates who meet a high ballot access threshold, i.e., a large majority of the nation have the opportunity to vote for any one of them, and because three represent a more conservative view, while three others represent a more liberal view, a broad and balanced spectrum of political view is available to the electorate in The Fourth Debate.

Candidates are now focused on swing states and will be until Election Day. The polls have shown that Wisconsin is one of many swing states in 2008. Wisconsin has been visited numerous times by the Democratic and Republican campaigns with more visits being planned.

Wisconsin has been visited numerous times by the Democratic and Republican campaigns with more visits being planned. All the candidates are looking for votes. Surprisingly, none of the debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates occurs in any of the Big Ten States. Madison, Wisconsin is an ideal location for such a Midwest debate. It is centrally located within the region. A Midwest debate will prompt candidates to deal with topics such as the Great Lakes, agriculture, and the Rust Belt economy.

Further, Wisconsin has a history of enacting democratic mechanisms into its political process, such as same-day registration and accessible ballot provisions. Wisconsin is ready to lead the nation and change history by hosting The Fourth Debate.

Plan:
Planning for The Fourth Debate has already begun.

The calendar has been carefully examined for unavoidable conflicts and a date has been determined. It is the evening of Thursday, October 23rd. The date is about a month away which offers any campaign the chance to include this very important, historic event in its schedule.

The venue has been selected. It is the beautiful, prestigious Monona Terrace in Wisconsin‘s state capital, Madison. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the facility has expert staff, plenty of parking, a convenient location, is only fifteen minutes from the airport and offers a variety of facilities and options. The Fourth Debate is currently on Monona Terrace’s calendar.

Campaign participation in the debate has not been determined yet. Because the League requires the event to be non-partisan, the debate must be open to a broader field of candidates. The most inclusive threshold, while limiting inclusion to truly national candidates is the one suggested by John Nichols (see addendum). The threshold of achieving national ballot access would require invitations to these six campaigns (in alphabetical order): Baldwin, Barr, McCain, McKinney, Obama, and Nader (see addendum).”

The format for the debate is yet to be determined. We suggest a single moderator debate with the moderator selected from persons who have spoken out for reform of the debate process (see addendum). An exciting alternative would be a youth debate, guaranteed to awaken the younger voter and those who have yet to vote. Other options have their strong points.
The audience could be selected by the campaigns that accept the League’s invitation in equal proportions. If there are four candidates, approximately one-fourth of the tickets go to each campaign. Endorsing groups (see below) would each receive four tickets for the event. Total audience would number not more than 300.

While it is understood that the League is the sole sponsor of The Fourth Debate, important interest groups based in Wisconsin could be encouraged to to endorse The Fourth Debate. Dozens of public and special interest groups want to be counted as supporters of a more vibrant and genuine campaign process. Volunteers are ready to invite these interest groups to attend. Further, with a broad spectrum of endorsing groups, all invited campaigns will value participating in The Fourth Debate.

Electronic media involvement should be pre-determined and their impact on the proceeding should be minimized to avoid any partiality. We suggest one feed to all outlets and that Wisconsin Public Television be given the first offer. Intrusion by equipment should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Campaigns would be responsible for all expenses, with the exception of any common expenses, such as the venue rental and equipment for common use.

Financial Support:
It is unclear what untoward expenses would be incurred by sponsorship of The Fourth Debate, beyond the venue charges and some clerical, technical fees. All parties would be responsible for providing in-kind contributions. If needed, endorsing groups should be asked to contribute a nominal sum to defray expenses.

Conclusion:
The CPD stranglehold must be broken.

The Fourth Debate provides the League of Women Voters with a unique, state-focused debate with national candidates. We believe this is the only way to break the CPD stranglehold now.
Major candidates will see the need to participate.

We believe that because Wisconsin is a swing state, and The Fourth Debate will be endorsed by dozens of influential interest groups, the major candidates will find it difficult to refuse the offer to participate. If they refuse, it will only be another testament to the paucity of our democracy. But, if they consent to The Fourth Debate, it will signal a major shift in Presidential campaigns for years to come. The upside opportunity is momentous. A legitimate debate will include more candidates.

Three candidates from each political spectrum, left and right, have qualified for serious consideration by voters. While two have the benefit of non-stop coverage since announcing their candidacy, others have no coverage to speak of. This chicken-or-the-egg dilemma spawned by low poll numbers v. campaign media coverage threatens our democracy and debate events provide the opportunity for voters to test and compare without media screening and bias.

In summation, The Fourth Debate believes 2008 is the year to take a stand. We believe the League of Women Voters is capable of drawing a line in the sand. We, The Fourth Debate, will stand with the League and work hard to see it through.

I just received awesome news from one of my friends from college. As part of a group project my senior year, I worked with a team to create an integrated communication campaign for the League of Women Voters St. Louis chapter.

The organization has a rich and active history, but has been struggling to recruit new members. As part of our proposed campaign, we suggested tying in a special event as a throw-back to the 1916 Walkless, Talkless Parade.

The Walkless, Talkless Parade took place during the 1916 Democratic National Convention in St. Louis. The League of Women Voters used this opportunity to urge the Democratic presidential candidate to support women’s rights to vote.

The parade included “thousands of women wearing yellow sashes and carrying yellow parasols aligned along the route the conventioneers would travel. The women would not speak but instead stand still as judgment while the delegates passed through their ‘Golden Lane.’

On that sunny morning of June 14, more than 7,000 women, dressed in yellow sashes and carrying yellow parasols, lined Locust Street from 12th Street to 19th Street. A tableau portrayed Lady Liberty surrounded by women representing each of the states. Those who represented states that had given the vote to women dressed in white. Those who portrayed states that had failed to extend enfranchisement, Missouri among them, dressed in black and displayed manacled hands.” In the end, the Democrats voted to support their cause and by 1919, the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.

Today I got word that the organization is going to have a reenactment on Saturday, September 6th! The event is in conjunction with the Kids Voting program. I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear that the LWV is breathing new life into their organization and teaching kids about the importance of voting.

أن ياأيها المسافر إلى الله خذ نصيبك من هذا البحر ولا تحرم نفسك عما قدر فيه وكن من الفائزين . ولو يرزقن كل من في السموات والأرض بقطرة منه ليغنين فى أنفسهم بغناء الله المقتدر العليم الحكيم. خذ بيد الأنقطاع غرفة من هذا البحر الحيوان ثم رشح منها على الكائنات ليطهرهم عن حدودات البشر ويقربهم بمنظر الله الأكبر هذا المقر المقدس المنير. وإن وجدت نفسك وحيدا لاتحزن فاكف بربك ثم أستأنس به وكن من الشاكرين. بلغ أمر مولاك إلى كل من في السموات والأرضين. إن وجدت مقبلا فاظهر عليه لئالىء حكمة ربك فيما ألقاك الروح وكن من المقبلين وإن وجدت معرضا فاعرض عنه فتوكل على الله ربك ورب العالمين – حضرة بهاء الله

يحتفل البهائيون بعيدين متتالين أيام الأول والثانى من محرم فكل عام ونحن بخير .ففي الأول من محرم نحتفل بعيد ميلاد حضرة الباب . فقد ولد حضرة الباب وأسمه الحقيقي ( على محمد) في مدينة شيراز بإيران أول محرم 1235 هجرية الموافق ليوم 20 أكتوبر عام 1819 ميلادية . ينتمي حضرة الباب إلى عائلة معروفة بالنبل والشرف ينتهى نسبها إلى سيدنا محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام . وقد ظهرت عليه علامات النجابة والذكاء لدرجة حيرت مدرسه عندما كان في (الكتاب ) وشهد بأن لديه قوة عجيبة لا تظهر إلا من صاحب الزمان وحده . وفى سن الشباب أظهر حضرته علائم وأشارات تدل على قوى وعظمة لا يضاهيها أى شخص ، وفي يوم 5جمادي الآخر عام 1260 أعلن حضرته بأنه هو القائم الموعود ( المهدي المنتظر ) وأنه يبشر بظهور أعظم منه هو ظهور حضرة بهاء الله .

واليوم الثاني للأحتفال هوالثاني من محرم وهو يوم ميلاد حضرة بهاء الله وأسمه الحقيقي ( حسين علي )عام 1233هجرية الموافق 12 نوفمبر 1817 ميلادية في مدينة طهران بإيران وينتمي حضرته إلى عائلة نبيلة وقد رفض أن يعين بمنصب والده في بلاط الشاه وقد شهد من حوله وهو طفل قائلين ( إن لهذا الطفل قوى فوق العادة ) بدأت آثار عظمته تظهر عندما كان شابا وقد أشتهر بشدة ذكائه وأخلاقه الحميدة وكرمه وعطفه .آمن بمبشره حضرة الباب بمجرد أعلان دعوته. وحبس ونفى بسبب ذلك في أحط السجون وأرذلها . أعلن حضرته دعوته فى بغداد. ثم تم نفيه إلى استانبول ومنها إلى أدرنة ثم أخيرا أستقر بمدينة عكاء بفلسطين . وبرغم الحبس والنفي المتتالى إلا أن أمر حضرته ثبت وآمن به الناس في كل بلدان الشرق والغرب .

هذا موجز مختصر جدا لحياة هذين الظهورين الأعظمين التي ذخرت حياتهما بالفيض الآلهى والبركات السماويه التى حملاها لأهل الأرض . فكل عام والبشرية كلها بالف خير وسلام .

قرأت قصة بأحدى المدونات تتكلم عن نبذ التعصب ، القصة بعنوان ( الشيكولاته والطفل الأسود ) وتتحدث بأختصار عن شخصية حضرة عبد البهاء وكيف أنه كان يعلم الكبار والأطفال كيفية حب الجميع دون النظر الى أديانهم أو لونهم أو جنسهم بأسلوب يتسم بالحكمة والصبر، القصة بكاملها على هذه المدونة

 أتذكرمرة كان بزيارتنا أحدى القريبات الغالية على قلوبنا أنا وأفراد أسرتي جميعا، كنت دائما أراقب أصرارها على تربية بناتها وتعليمهم كل القيم والفضائل،  كانت هذه القريبة في زيارتنا يوما مع طفلتها الصغيرة فجلست أبنتي تحكي لها هذه القصة الرائعة، ومرت شهور على هذه الحكاية وفي يوم آخر أثناء زيارة أهلها لنا وجدتها تقول لها أنا النهاردة قابلنى موقف في المدرسة قالت لها أحكيه، قالت اليوم كل زميلاتى قالوا لى لا تلعبى مع أحدى زميلاتنا قلت لهم ليه؟  قالوا لأنها سوداء وشكلها موش حلوة زينا، فرديت عليهم ليه مالعبش معاها موش هى خلق ربنا زينا كلنا، وبسرعة رحت ليها وكانت واقفة لوحدها حزينة رحت ولعبت معاها ولما أصحابي شافوا كده حضروا عندنا ولعبنا كلنا سوا .

فرحت جدا لحديث الصغيرة وقلت قد أيه الكلمة الآلهية لها تأثير السحر على الأرواح وقد أيه تعليم اطفالنا في الصغر يهذب نفوسهم وأرواحهم وبالتالى تنشأ أجيال بعيدة عن التعصب والكره والبغض ونبذ الآخر.

وتذكرت كلمات حضرة بهاء الله ( لم يزل كان أصلاح العالم بالكلمة الطيبة الطاهرة والأعمال الراضية المرضية )

1.      أمس أحتفل البهائيون في أنحاء العالم بذكرى صعود حضرة عبد البهاء والذى صعد عام 1920وذلك بقراءة المناجاة الخاصة بصعود حضرته والسيرة الشخصية لشخصه العظيم الذى مهما قلنا لن نوفيه حقه ، ولقد كتبت مقاله قبل ذلك بخصوص هذه الذكرى الخالدة  بعنوان ( رمز النقاء ) وقد وصلني من أبني بعض من الأشعاروالرثاء التي قيلت في حق حضرته من قبل أناس غير بهائيين لكنهم عرب منصفين عاش بينهم فأحبوه ورثوه حين وفاته وذكر ذلك فى بعض الكتب العربية لبعض المؤلفين العرب أمثال البحري وسليم قباعين .

كتب أبني يقول أعتقد أن مجرد الكلمات لا تفي تلك الشخصية العظيمة والتي شهد لها الجميع من حبيب و غريب, من وضيع و رفيع, وغني و فقير بالجلال و الجمال و الكبرياء و النبل..
و هذه نبذه بسيطة عن الرثاء الذي شيع به حضرة عبد البهاء في وداعه الأخير:
رثاء نظمه الشّيخ عبد الملك الشّعبي:

لقد كان ربّ الفضل والعلم والتّقى
وبحر النّدى والجود والحلم والمجد 

ومصباح جود في الدّجى يهتدي به
بلى غاية الرّاجي وأكرم من يسدي

ومن رثاء رشيد افندي الصّفدي من عكّا:

إمام قد حوى علمًا وفضلاً
ورشدًا منه قد ظهر البهاء

بتحقيق اليقين على صلاح
وزهد لا يشوبهمـا ريـاء

ومن رثاء أمين زيدان:

يا إمام الهدى ونور البهـاء
أيّ لفظ يفيك حقّ العزاء

ليت شعري من لي بلفظ نبيّ
فيه أرثي علامة الأنبياء

و قد نشرت جريدة النّفير الصّادرة في حيفا على طول صفحتها الأولى، تحت عنوان: (خطب جلل، انتقال رجل الإنسانيّة عبد البهاء عباس) ثم استرسلت بقولها: ” رزئت الإنسانيّة بانتقال أعظم ركن من أركانها، وأشهر محسن إليها، ملأ الخافقين ذكره وشداه العالم الكبير، والحكيم الشّهير، السّيد عباس البهائيّ”.

وكتبت جريدة المقطّم في ٣٠ نوفمبر ١٩٢١: “كان رحمه الله محترمًا من جميع الّذين عاشروه، مهيبًا كريم النّفس، متّصفًا بالأخلاق السّامية، وله أتباع ومريدون معظمهم في بلدان الشرق والغرب والولايات المتّحدة…زار الفقيد القطر المصريّ قبل الحرب وأقام بضاحية الزّيتون، وعرف كبار المصريّين وفضلاءهم، وزار بعض بلدان أوربّا وأمريكا فقوبل فيها بالتّكريم، وخطب في المحافل والمعاهد والكنائس داعيًا إلى السّلام والوئام والإخاء بين البشر، والكفّ عن الحروب، والرّجوع إلى تعاليم الأنبياء والمرسلين…”.

وعقبه إبراهيم أفندي نصّار فقال: “… أيّها الرّاقد العظيم الكريم أنت أحسنت إلينا وأرشدتنا وعلّمتنا، عشت بيننا عظيمًا بكلّ ما تعنيه كلمة العظمة، وقد تفاخرنا بأعمالك وأقوالك، أنت رفعت منزلة الشّرق إلى أعالي ذروة المجد، قد أصلحت وهذّبت، أتممت السّعي فنلت إكليل المجد…”.

وتلاه حضرة صاحب الفضيلة الأستاذ محمد مراد، مفتي حيفا قائلاً: “… لا أودّ أن أبالغ في تأبين هذا الرّجل العظيم، فإنّ أياديه البيضاء في سبيل خدمة الإنسانيّة، ومآثره الغرّاء في عمل البرّ والإحسان لا ينكرها إلاّ من طمس الله على قلبه. كان عبد البهاء عظيمًا في جميع أدوار حياته، كان عصاميًّا أبيّ النّفس، شريف العواطف، سامي المبادئ، كان رضيّ الأخلاق، حسن السّيرة، اشتهر ذكره في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها. وهو لم يحرز هذه المرتبة العالية إلاّ بجدّه واجتهاده، ولم ينل في القلوب تلك المنزلة العالية وذلك المكان الرّفيع، إلاّ بمساعدته للبائس، وبإغاثته للملهوف، وبتسليته للمصاب. كان رحمه الله واقفًا على دقائق الشّريعة الإسلامية. كان عالمًا كبيرًا وأستاذًا نحريرًا…”.

تلاه الأستاذ عبد الله مخلص: “إنّ شمس العلم قد غربت، وبدر التّقى قد أفل، ونجم المكارم قد هوى، وعرش الفضيلة قد ثلّ، وطود الإحسان قد دكّ، ومعالم الهدى قد تغيّرت بانتقال هذا الرّاحل الكريم من الدّار الفانية إلى الدّار الباقية”.

ونختم هذه المقتطفات ببيتين من قصيدة ارتجلها حضرة فضيلة الشّيخ يونس الخطيب:

حكم الإله بموت عباس البها
ربّ التّقى والفضل والعرفان

كلّ الأنام بكت وطال نحيبها
لفراق من هو عين كلّ زمان
